George Karl interview: 1,000 reasons to root for the Nuggets...

Ok, so I'm not going to list 1,000 individual reasons to root for the Nuggets to beat the Bobcats in Charlotte on Tuesday night.  But I did have the privilege of catching up with Nuggets head coach George Karl on the eve of what might be his 1,000th coaching victory.

Star-divide

When George Karl began his coaching career, Ronald Reagan was re-elected president by an overwhelming majority, the "Band Aid" single was released, Katy Perry had just been born, the Broncos finished 13-3 behind a second-year quarterback named John Elway, the only professional baseball team in Denver was named the Bears and the Nuggets - no joke - were on their way to their franchise's second-ever Western Conference Finals appearance.

26 years later, Karl finds himself on the cusp of his 1,000th NBA coaching victory, marking an incredible milestone for the unlikeliest of coaching careers...a career that began as a young 33 year old (sound familiar, Broncos fans?) and has included stops in Great Falls (Montana), Cleveland, Golden State, Albany, Madrid, Seattle, Milwaukee and now Denver.

Making things even more special for Karl, he has the opportunity to notch win number 1,000 in Charlotte, just a few driving hours away from where his basketball career really began as a point guard at the University of North Carolina under the tutelage of the legendary Dean Smith.  As if we needed more symbolism to go with win number 1,000 itself, Karl could get to 1,000 in front of his fellow Tar Heel and close friend Larry Brown, and possibly Bobcats owner and most famous Tar Heel Michael Jordan, too.

Karl's ascendancy to the top of the all-time coaching wins list is even more remarkable because of the swiftness with which he's done it and his win total is more than just a tribute to longevity.  Among the seven coaches in NBA history to win at least 999 games, Karl ranks fourth in overall winning percentage at .596 and has missed the playoffs just twice when finishing an NBA season (Karl resigned from the 1987-88 Warriors and likely wouldn't have made the playoffs that season either).

Comparatively, when finishing an NBA season Don Nelson (the NBA's all-time coaching wins leader) missed the playoffs 12 times, Lenny Wilkens (second all-time) couldn't find the postseason 11 times, Pat Riley (third all-time) missed the playoffs three times, Jerry Sloan (fourth all-time) has missed the playoffs four times and Brown (sixth all-time) has missed the playoffs four times, as well.  Only Phil Jackson, he of the 11 championship rings and fifth all-time in coaching victories, has never missed the postseason in his NBA coaching career.

Point being, even before Karl gets his 1,000th coaching victory, he has already cemented himself among the greatest coaches in NBA history by any measure.  The question now is: against which opponent will win number 1,000 happen?  Will Karl get the big victory in Charlotte as mentioned above?  Or against the storied Celtics in Boston the following night?  Or - should the Nuggets suddenly drop two straight games - against the Raptors in Toronto on Friday, the location of Karl's 900th victory?

The night before what could be win 1,000 for Coach Karl, the Nuggets head coach was gracious enough with his time to answer those and other questions...

Andrew Feinstein: First things first, coach, you've looked better and better out there on the court lately.  How are you feeling?

George Karl: I feel really good.  I had the flu for a few days and a temperature of 101 degrees, but now I’m doing fine.  I just want to get as many wins as we can on this road trip, but we have some tough places to play.  Charlotte is always hard for us.  Carmelo Anthony and Gerald Wallace have a thing for each other and Wallace makes it tough on Melo.  And then we play Boston and it seems like we’re always in Boston on a back-to-back, so that won't be easy.  But I’m happy this time of year.  Really happy.  I like December and Christmas is going to be enjoyable.

AF: It looks like you're going get win number 1,000 in one of four historic locations: at Charlotte (where your basketball career began), at Boston (the most storied franchise in NBA history), at Toronto (where you won your 900th) or at New York (another storied NBA city)?  I know the answer but will ask anyway: what’s your preference?

GK: I just want to keep the momentum in a good place.  I don’t know what the longest streak we’ve had in Denver is since I got here, but anytime you can win 10 games in a row that means something.  And sure you can focus on how we’ve blown leads, but we’ve had a lead in the fourth quarter of every game except one which is a pretty remarkable stat.

AF: What will it mean if this happens in Charlotte near where your basketball career started?  And will Dean Smith be in attendance?

GK:  I respect what it says.  Longevity in the business.  Delivering a product of excellence.  Making the playoffs.  And just be as good as you can be.  I’ve made the playoffs almost every year of my career, but we’ve played the eventual NBA champion a lot early in those runs.  Even in Milwaukee we played Indiana, New Jersey and Philly before those teams went to the Finals.  I wish we could’ve gotten more playoff wins along the way but I think I've delivered excellence.

I tried to call coach [Roy] Williams today to see if he might be there.  I don’t know about Dean Smith.  He has so many guys that he has mentored - whether it be me, Larry [Brown], John Kuester, Roy [Williams] and so on that it’s tough for him to keep up with them all and be there for every one's individual milestone.  A couple guys from my Carolina team will be there.  And I think Michael Jordan will be here.  So there will be enough Carolina blood in the building to go around.

AF: About this year's Nuggets team specifically, obviously we're all concerned about blown leads.  Does winning games "this way" foster bad habits?  I suppose only a fan could ask this, but would the Nuggets be better off losing one of these games as a wake up call like they did when the Timberwolves broke their 15-game losing streak by beating us in Denver early last season?  And remember, after that loss the Nuggets played quite well.

GK: I am concerned that we have the personality that’s blowing leads.  But it’s powerful to say we’ve had leads in every game.  I don't know how many teams can say that.  So to me, that’s more positive than the concern I have about blowing leads.  Also, blowing leads when you’re shorthanded on the road is not unusual in this league.  Eventually, talent out-weighs intensity down the stretch of a game.

For some reason, this team was taken off the basketball map because of losing Kenyon [Martin] and I last year and I think we have a little chip on our shoulder.  Someday we’ll get Kenyon and Bird [Chris Andersen] back.  When we have a full arsenal of talent and versatility, I like our chances.

AF: I hate to bring up a non-basketball topic and a negative topic before your big night, but do you have any reaction to Josh McDaniels getting fired?  You guys had a good relationship and he had invited you to speak to the Broncos before the season began.  Having been fired yourself at a very young age, do you have any advice for Josh?

GK: I left him a message.  I got fired at age 33 or 34.  [Former Cleveland Browns coach] Marty Schottenheimer came to my house with a case of Coors Light and offered to talk.  I want to offer Josh the same thing.  There will always be an open door to the Nuggets for Josh.  Over the next few days when things settle down for him and he gets his mind in the right place, he needs to make a commitment to learn from his mistakes.  But his journey is just beginning and he’ll have other opportunities down the road.

AF (This question is for Nate who pointed out this great stat the other day): Before we go, I have to point out that the Nuggets are 7-0 when J.R. Smith plays more than 24 minutes.  Would you like to comment on that?

GK: That sounds like a Mark Warkentien stat!   I didn’t know that, but J.R. has been going great.  Last night [against the Grizzlies] was a bit of a step backward, but his commitment and professionalism in practice and in games is the best its ever been since I’ve coached him.

AF: Thanks for your time, coach.  Congratulations on 999 wins and good luck going for 1,000.

GK: Thanks, Andrew.  I'll be typing in "Denver Stiffs" on the computer tomorrow morning.  Take care!

Let's be sure to root for the Nuggets to get Karl his 1,000th coaching victory in Charlotte and keep this Nuggets winning streak going.  Karl's career has had many stops and many ups and downs (more ups than downs), and here's hoping that his next stop after Denver is in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Awesome Interview

George sounds like such a great guy. I’d love to sit down and have a life talk with him. I feel like he can give some of the best advice any man ever could and is just so educated and sharp on everything he says and talks about. He’s a great man and I envy him, his accomplishments and his strength through all of the personal and professional struggles he has endured in his interesting and eventful life. I’m glad he is the coach of the Nuggets, I am glad Ujiri is doing the right thing in keeping one of the best coaches ever to coach the game of basketball in Denver and I’m glad to be a Nuggets fan. Great Interview Andy.

Wow, nice int

I’ll be typing in “Denver Stiffs” on the computer tomorrow morning.

Was that a joke, or is he really going to be on here tomorrow?

Had to laugh when you brought up McDaniels. Come on Andy, this is a Nugs interview! You are lucky enough to talk to George Karl and you start talking about the Broncos! lol

Glad you asked a semi-tough question about the blowing leads thing. I know you kind of have a relationship with Karl, so it’s probably hard asking him the difficult stuff, but you should continue to try and do it as nicely as you can. It makes things a lot more interesting when you get answers to questions you really want to know. Next time ask him what happened to the cough drops. I havn’t seen them this season.

George sounds like a guy who’d be a good dad; someone you just want to kick back and have a beer with and shoot the sh*t. Obviously I have my issues with his coaching (or lack there of) at times, but as a person you have to aknwolege his greatness. He really seems like a down-to-earth dude in the middle of a league full of “me first” types of guys.

After reading this I REALLY want him to get his 1,000th in Charlotte because of all the history. I bet we do it. Our guys know what’s at stake.

Doom takes me back to college

It was the first of the first person shooters where you could connect multiple computers (we had these weird modems that worked with the dorm phone system) and play against your friends. We all had desktops and would open our doors, and three of us could play at once. Anyone visiting the hall had to listen to our shouts of trash talk and threats of death. It was great.

goodluck George!

You should have won a championship with Seattle, too bad you ran into Jordans bulls, but I think you gave them their hardest effort in the finals, and I thought if you had put Gary on Jordan from the get go, you would have won the series, but at least you lost to a former Tarheel! Hopefully you win tonight, you deserve it and if you are reading this, make sure to tell Nene hey and if possible tell him to do just one Karl Malone “mailman” dunk if he can on a fast break! That would be awesome, and thank you for everything else, goodluck!

Nice Interview But...

Why no mention of Melo’s meltdown in the Memphis game? Melo’s performance (or lack thereof) in the Memphis game has been a huge source of discussion/debate on this blog the last couple of days. I would be very curious what Karl’s thoughts are of Melo tanking it on Sunday night. Otherwise, great to hear Big George is doing so well…

What is the point of getting an interview

and only asking fluff questions? I normally really like what you write, but to me you missed your opportunity here. The question about the blown leads was a good one, but why no follow up? Why not ask what he thought he could do, as the coach, to help keep that from happening? Why not ask him about not using timeouts to help stop the opposing teams run? Why not ask him about why Billups is playing so many minutes and if he is concerned about Billups wearing down like he did last year? Why not ask him about playing billups at 2 guard beside lawson when he’s got Afflalo, J.R. and Forbes? Why not ask him about the nuggets road record, and what he thinks can be done to improve it?

I know you can’t go in there and turn it into the inquisition, but the toughest thing you said was gee coach, maybe it would be nice if you kinda sorta considered the possibility of perhaps, if you get the chance, playing J.R. a little more.

These are questions myself and others on this site have been asking all season, and you skipped all of them. I understand that if you are dickish to Karl he will stop talking to you, but what is the point of keep access if you only get to ask him softball questions? The questions I listed above are legitimate questions, and maybe he has a good answer. Maybe, in response to the question about calling timeouts, he would say something about a strategy of tiring out the other teams so they are exhausted in the fourth. Apparently, just like the number of licks to get to the center of a tootsie pop, and how George W. Bush got elected (oh yeah, Florida cheated), the world will never know.

Good last line

The purpose of this interview was solely to discuss the 1,000 win milestone. I was able to sneak in a few extra questions, but Coach Karl only had a few minutes as he was on the road and we did the interview fairly late last night.

I, too, would like to do a more lengthy, in-depth interview. But for those I prefer to be face-to-face and need a lot more time. I hope this makes sense and thanks for reading!

Take what you can get BigMan

I personally didn’t even know this interview was going to happen… so getting ANY insight directly from a coach, especially on little old Denver Stiffs out of the blue on this beautiful Tuesday morning, is more than anyone could/should ask for. I think Andy was judicious in his questions, and considerate of Karl’s time (if in fact this is verbatim of the interview, you can tell that Andy voluntarily cut the interview short). And there will be more I’m sure so… take er easy big fella… ;)

by stiffy on Dec 7, 2010 9:37 AM MST up reply actions

Andy's not a reporter

He has a friendly relationship with Karl (from what I’ve gathered), and I’m sure he wants to do everything in his power to keep that relationship alive. If I had an interview with Karl I’d ask everything you said and more, and if he got angry or frustrated I’d just try and let him know that I mean no disrespect in any way. But I can see where Andrew is coming from. Next time though Andy, before an interview maybe make a post asking for reader suggestion questions to ask, that way if Karl gets mad you can just blame it on us.

I think the story here is

Karl is simply a real good coach. His longevity, playoff appearance and career winning percentage says so.

It takes a lot of breaks, and things to go 100% correctly to come out on top of this league and I think when you have a guy with the basketball knowledge and overall savvy such as Karl’s, you don’t just go swapping a guy like that out on a whim (as many of us have requested be the case on occasion). I actually think the Kronk gang has been pretty good about having the patience and foresight to weather storms around here, and I’m glad we have Karl ultimately. He’s a good guy, smart as hell, and someone anyone could look up to or be proud to say they know, or worked with.

This guy COULD lead a team to a championship. It’s very possible, and guys you can say that about don’t grow on trees. He’s hit some unfortunate challenges along the way though (the Jordan era, etc), but if a break here or there went his way, there’s no doubt in my mind Coach Karl is in possession of a couple rings today. Sure he’s made his share of mistakes, you’re bound to make some over 26 years of coaching, but I’d rather have him in command of my troops than about 28 other teams coaches in the league today, and the others are simply peers, not necessarily guys that he couldn’t beat if, as I said, a break or two didn’t go his way (although AC inbounding vs. the Lakers will forever go down in history as one of his gaffes I think). Overall that ain’t a bad thing to realize. Sure I have my questions about how we’re going to get over the hump here, but Karl is NOT the problem ultimately. The league has certainly evolved over the last 26 years, becoming more and more difficult for coaches to coach in (diva players, franchise contracts for players that saddle coaches with bad roster constraints, rules changes, etc) and Karl is on a very short list of guys who’ve adapted successfully.

I’m a Karl fan now, thru and thru. I originally joined as a member of firegeorgekarl.com, but I’m not of that ilk anymore. Once you stop and think about things, and how elusive championships can be in any sport and all the truly great players and coaches in sports in general who had to retire without a championship, you have to kinda set aside that lack of rings sometimes, and know that who you’re going to war with is capable of winning the battle, regardless of rather he’s won it already or not. Karl is one of those guys, but still has a window of opportunity to write the history books on himself as a champion. Hopeful (skeptical at times too) but hopeful that it happens for him one day.

by stiffy on Dec 7, 2010 9:32 AM MST reply actions

Full circle

I’m new to the group and thought I’d make an intro and comment at the same time. I’ve been a loyal, albeit passive nuggets fan for the past 15 years (even through the dark ages), and it’s only been in the past 3-4 years that I’ve become more of a hardcore fan (watching all the games, etc). I found this site through firegeorgekarl.com, and like many here, I’ve come full circle and have grown to appreciate his contribution to the team. I thought it would also be poetic that my first post be congratulatory in nature, despite my initial reasons for following this blog/forum.

Andrew, thanks for the interview. Given the 1,000 win focus, I think it was completely appropriate to hold off on the hard hitting questions that have been circling this site. One question/idea: Since GK said he’d visit the site (joking or serious) and also since Melo has mentioned in the past that he’s at least visited the site, have you considered setting up a ghost writer for GK or a Nugget as a recurring contributor? Maybe George’s PA or admin? If not him, then maybe go after a less star-ish nugget (by media standards), who’d be willing to come on now & then (like AAA)? I live in Chicago now (used to be in Denver), and the local radio station here has a piece called “Maynard Mondays” where Brad Maynard (Bears kicker) does a short interview on Mondays following a game. If they won’t come online and post themselves, then maybe a phone interview every once in a while? I’m sure Bird might be persuaded given the influential nature of this site :)

He seems by far to be the most nice and smart person on the team. I actually wouldn’t mind JR either because he’d have no problem telling it like it is (see Twitter account). Hey, what about AC too? As long as he doesn’t read through the comments history of the site, he’d probably be perfect.

AC would actually be good

He’s a veteran on the team and presumably keeps an eye on what’s going on. Given his very limited minutes, maybe he’d welcome a chance to be the voice of the Nuggets on this site. Plus, he’s in good w/ GK, so he maybe they won’t mind that he comments here. They probably have a PR media ban on JR. AAA would be my first choice though.

Great interview, thanks

personally I am amazed at the access that blog writers are getting these days and it will only continue. Eventually the paid “experts” who have completely lost touch of reality and are only credible because of “sources” will have to watch their back. Anyway hopefully GK gets 1000 tonight!

They better get it tonight

Or they may not get it until after this road trip.

Thursday at the Celtics is tough no matter what.
Friday – second of a back to back, 3rd game in four nights.
Sunday – at Knicks who are 9-1 in their last 10, fourth game in 6 nights.

I’m pretty nervous about this road trip.

after the way they have been playing lately and the fact it is the third game in four nights make that a dangerous game. They shouldn’t lose, but it will not surprise me one bit if they do.

Many thanks for this - and all things Stiffs

As a longtime fan of Coach Karl (lived in Oakland + then in Seattle = no-brainer), I want to thank Andy for this excellent “fluff” interview on the day of what we all hope will be Karl’s 1000th. Might as well admit it: it gives me goose bumps and a bit of a throat lump to type those four digits.

While I’m at it, I’ll also admit to having lurked here most every day for quite some time. Thanks to Andy and Nate for what you’ve created here – a very entertaining and informative cyberoutpost. And thanks also to many of you regular readers for sharing your knowledge of, and passion for, the sport of professional basketball and that confounding cohort of its practitioners known as the Denver Nuggets.

it’s a series of disagreements set out over many separate threads regarding a similar subject

Nemesis, foil, punching bag...

Thanks for the welcome, and I’m glad to take some heat, as along as you can hang in the kitchen, too. In all seriousness, I’m a loyal Karl fan, but that doesn’t mean I see him as brilliant or unassailable. Far from it. Dare I say the man has some flaws when it comes to coaching.

Not that this is the best example, but I still can’t believe Karl puts up with all the isolations/slowdowns from a particular superstar. It doesn’t take the most insightful basketball observer (which I surely ain’t) to see how that 1) disrupts the offensive flow; 2) is enervating for teammates on the floor; and 3) has hindered said superstar from becoming a more complete player. And what about all the chucking from that other guy?! And the lack of a more disciplined offense in the first place? And on and on.

Of course, when you see the success that Karl has had, the above paragraph becomes just so much quibbling, don’t you think? (Except maybe for the caveat of how deep such a team can(not) get in the playoffs.) And there’s always something to be said for a lover of the game who’s a players’ coach through and through. Who’s to say that’s not the best approach for getting them to buy in, not to mention for the coach’s longevity?

Onward.

that is the price karl pays

for giving the players the trust and benifit of the doubt. he knows the nba is intended to be a players league. as a a former player karl knows what it is like to play the game as it was intended. free flowing and spontaneous.

Gee, isn't that nice

Except none of the teams that have won championships recently use a “free flowing and spontaneous” system. They all have structured offenses with plays. Free flowing may be fun for the players, but it isn’t what wins titles. This is a job – do you only do fun things at work, or do you also have to do the less fun but necessary things?

agree

treating these nuggets like grown men and expecting them to use discretion and self discipline is too much to expect. what most players need today is a micro manager that will force them to play the right way or run them off the court and right out of town. too bad.

Might toss myself in that hat too

Karl seems to care too much about his opinion and punishing people than putting the people that give us the best chance of winning on the floor. When I go to the game, I will bring my Manny Ramirez dreads, find a Balkman jersey, and sit in the crowd and yell down for Naldo the whole game.

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
