Golden Nuggets: Reacting to "the charge"...

It's Friday and the good news is Carmelo Anthony hasn't been traded yet.  The bad news is that my wish for the Nuggets to be 20-10 after 30 games (and thus be buyers and not sellers at the trade deadline) is hanging on by a thread thanks to a fraudulent end-of-game call last night.

I'm over this, on to the next game

Btw, that JR dunk was flat out amazing. Probably better than anything that will happen in this year’s dunk contest.
We have Minnesota who is playing in POR today.
I think Chauncey should rest, but if he plays, he should play less than 15 min.
Tomasson says the cavalry (Bird, healthier Billups, AND KMart) might be back against SA. Glad we get a chance to avenge this loss in less than a week. No more excuses Nugs fans, we have something to be excited about until the trade deadline.

I think this pretty much ends the keep/trade melo debate
In Masai Ujiri’s strongest stance during the histrionics of The Melodrama, the Nuggets’ vice president of player personnel said during the first quarter of the Nuggets-Spurs game Thursday night: “I am listening aggressively” to offers for Anthony.

Ujiri had held out hope that Anthony would accept the Nuggets’ offseason proposal for three years at a total of almost $65 million. But Melo hasn’t moved a millimeter, and Ujiri, ever the optimist, has accepted the inevitable, unavoidable conclusion.

Anthony will be gone before the trading deadline in late February, and a trade is more than likely to happen sooner than later. Perhaps real soon.

And the scary thing

Is that Paige is saying the nuggs get three number ones or two number ones and Favors. Since he was talking with Ujiri, perhaps the speculation of Favors and 4 number ones is overoptimistic. He did say the nets are getting desperate, so here’s hoping.

It's still just more chatter and it changes nothing

and I still, after having modified my position, think staying is a consideration.

by TakeFive on Dec 17, 2010 2:18 PM MST up reply actions

Not just chatter

He’s got Ujiri on the record “aggressively” listening to offers. Paige then states emphatically that Melo is going to be traded. That means Ujiri almost certainly told him that off the record. This isn’t the anonymous “sources” of other reports. This is the nuggets GM on the record.

Well I expect him to be on the job every day listening....

Call it “aggressive,” call it attentive, call it what you want. I assume he doesn’t have a lackadaisical attitude.

It’s just a word that he chose to say he’s working hard.

by TakeFive on Dec 17, 2010 2:32 PM MST up reply actions

If they weren't going to do a trade

He’d say “We’re not trading Melo, we’re not entertaining offers”. GM’s do it all the time. Instead he says he’s agressively listening. He has a one on one conversation with paige, who was previously on the keep melo team, and no paige has done a 180 and states unequivically that Melo is gone.

Last week I said hope of keeping melo was 10%. I’m adjusting to 1% after reading that.

Well... you're right about that but then it's no secret

the Melo has said he’s keeping his options open. He has also said that could mean staying with the Nuggets. I assumed for several months he was leaving, but he’s still here. I’m wondering if he isn’t still uncertain what he wants.

Aggressively listening he may be

but unless Melo signs off on New Jersey the deal aint happening.

I’m starting to believe the Melo has said (with his actions) “trade me if you must, but I’m not going to New Jersey”

Now if it was because Melo wanted only one destination that would be different, but there has been no indication of that.

The only thing I’ve literally heard from his own mouth was complimentary of the Nets and their move to Brooklyn…. though it didn’t necessarily mean anything.

If Melo wanted to go to NJ

the deal would have been completed on Tuesday. Or before the season. The deal has been on the table, and with NJ offering all that they are right now, the only road block is Melo.

Well

That’s not necessarily the case regarding before the season. At that point Ujiri was holding out hope of convincing him to stay. Plus, once you are in the season you have to wait until last tuesday to free up all the deals. Now, you may be right.

However, it could be the Nets are still in negotiations with a third team that haven’t finalized yet. One of the multitude of reports referred to an unnamed young player the nuggets covet to be included in the deal. It may be they haven’t yet pried that player away from the other team. Or it may be that the Nets and Nuggets are still haggling over the final details.

I think if they had finalized a deal and were merely awaiting Melo’s agreement, something would have leaked out about it.

Those that automatically assume the Nets are desperate to make a deal and will give the Nuggets whatever they want are eating loony candy.

Given what the Nuggets want, the Nets can pick their priorities. What other team can compete with them?

That deal before the season was kinked likely by Charlotte, meaning it never was a real deal, even if they got somewhat close.

I'm not quoting sources here...this is my own opinion (as this whole conversation has been)

The deal at the beginning of the season made no sense. The Nuggets took on too much cash to get worse (ill conceived from the beginning) . What I have been saying is, logically, if Melo was going to sign the extension with NJ the Nuggets would have made the deal on Tuesday.

The “offer” of Favors and picks hasn’t changed much…just teams arent involved. It’s been widely reported by many different “sources” that NJ is prepared to offer more picks.

There's is a difference between Melo "wanting"

This deal (or potential deal) depends on Melo signing off on the extension. I’ve been speaking for myself here. Opinion and everything. I know it happens in the NFL all the time that if someone is in trade talks, they allow the other team to talk with the player.

NBA rules are MUCH stricter than NFL rules

on tampering. Thus why Melo can’t publicly comment on what’s going on with he and the Nuggets.

Which is why the Knicks would be smacked down with tampering if it’s been found that they are speaking with Melo (which the Nuggets already suspect them of)

I think we can give permission

I’m not sure though. The Nuggets wouldn’t, because we need to string NJ along for as much time as we possibly can.

It is tampering, but if a team were to sign and trade a player to another team, I think we can give permission for the other team and the player to talk about it. Not sure on this completely

I’d like to say this. With as bad as NJ has looked this year, in your opinion, wouldn’t NJ be better served in using some of these draft picks on getting young players? IF the Nets are pursuing another type of deal, what do you think is in their best interest outside of Carmelo?

I really became a fan of the fans over at Net's Daily

because of this whole Melo mess. I’ve hoped for a trade there because if you want to rebuild on the fly with cap space and picks etc. they had the ability to to do that kind of deal with the Nuggets. They have Favors as well.

I do think they would love to have Melo or some player that would create a nice buzz going into the Barclays Center.

Now that they’ve 86’d T-Will, they have a nice young center. From there, in trades, like the draft, you find the best players you can. With Avery, it has become obvious they want to build with the commitment and discipline of the Spurs, so it may effect their opinion of some players.

The Nets looked pretty good early, even in losing. Then it was the T-Will drama… Murphy was out of shape so he hurt his back and Avery said take a couple of weeks and get in shape, They’ve lost three players to misc injury.

by TakeFive on Dec 17, 2010 3:49 PM MST up reply actions

I've always felt

that due to Melo’s….how should I put this….lax opinion of defense that he and Avery would clash quite a bit. Who knows…I think the Nets have a good nucleus with Lopez, Favors and Harris…I’d say get some prime draft picks and trade for some great role players to go around Lopez.

Melo needs to be on a team with tons of vets. I think he may have a destructive personality on a young team. At the same time, that young team will be better with him on it. So it’s a catch 22

Defense

If he is traded to the Nets, it will be an experiment. We’ll get to see if another coach can get him to improve defensively and the issue is Karl’s scheme, or if even in a proven defensive scheme he remains a sub-par defender.

I think a trade like the one discussed turns the nets into what the nuggets have been. First round playoff losers. Not sure if I’d want the trade as a net fan. They’ve got a lot of assets there now.

Right

I can’t argue with Jeff on this one. By my count Melo has had two chances to be in New Jersey and passed them up both. I really do think a version of the AK47/Favors and picks trade would have gone down before the season had Melo indicated he wanted to play there, and not Denver anymore (but not that trade – it didn’t make any sense). Back then, there was reason to believe Melo might reconsider Denver though. Now I believe the Nugs want a 3 team deal with New Jersey to happen this week, but Melo is not budging. That’s twice he could have gotten out of here, done what he said he was going to do which is help Denver get something for him. But here we stand and nothing has changed.

Moolah

and lots of it. JPage said his “handlers” are already working on Melo to convince him on NJ. When it comes down to it, I think he’ll realize that getting 95% of what he wants and driving to NJ for about a season and a half will be worth the $10+ million in additional salary he gets by agreeing to the trade.

I don’t think he will get money if he goes to NY.
I think keeping him and going for it is the way to go.
If we fizzle in the playoffs and Melo leaves, I won’t be mad. The NBA is done anyway for 2011, so I don’t think getting anything in return for Melo is my priority. However, it might be a priority to Ujiri.
I think Ujiri is going to wait for our team to be fully healthy and give it one last shot. If Melo still wants to go, then he is headed to NJ at deadline. NJ is desperate, so Ujiri should milk them like a cash cow.

Gotta love the haterz. Keep that hate a comin'

by JR15 on Dec 17, 2010 2:26 PM MST via mobile up reply actions

Agree

Ujiri wouldn’t do that to the fans. He went through the same thing in Toronto. They simply wanted to make the playoffs that is why they kept Bosh so the fans would have good basketball to see in a town where just making the playoffs is a really huge deal.

Anyways look what happened. Bosh became increasingly disinterested knowing he was leaving soon. He got a nose injury and sat out the entire end of the season while the Raps miss the playoffs by one game. Then, he predictably leaves for nothing on the first day of free agency.

Ujiri is going to act and make strong moves this time. You either keep Melo or trade him, don’t waddle and leave things up to fate on a hope and a prayer that something magical happens in the postseason. I truly believe Ujiri is doing everything he can to keep Melo and hasn’t given that up yet.

I might not be mad if keep Melo and fizzle out of the playoffs this year and watch him leave this summer. Mainly because there is value in being a playoff team and just making it there and having a long shot chance when you get in. At the same time I also understand if you want to someday get to a championship losing him for nothing is not an option you can take as a GM

I've watched Melo get tagged with many an offensive foul this season.....

and never had any sympathy.

I watched the replays, heard the announcers claim two refs made the call, supposedly.
I watched with a mindset that it should be charging.
I watched with a mindset that it wasn’t.

While Manu did slide over, it is awfully hard to say he got there B4 Melo was in the air, or that he was definitely set. It was a close call, it was too close to call. It could just as easily been a blocking call.

I’m over the game….. But that was a perfect NON-CALL.

What's amazing is that alll the most recent "inside"

feedback is that the Nuggets want draft choices and young, meaning on rookie contracts, players. Which makes perfect sense. By going this route they can create lots of Cap space, just like the Knicks did so they can pick who they want to “buy.”

In contrast to PHX, who immediately after losing Amar’e went out and acquired some so-so players and their so-so contracts.

But how many teams fit into that mold or can make that kind of deal ?

Try to avoid 2011 draft picks

That draft will blow. F it, I don’t care about the future. At this point for me it is Nuggets win or I go back to work.
I can’t watch a rebuilding team struggle for years. Even if we draft someone amazing, it will take 2-3 years to actually be a contender. I don’t want to be like the Knicks (always hoping) I want to win when we have something tangible right now.

With the Knicks.....

It took them years to get out from under. The Nuggets can get there with one good trade and all their expiring contracts. They can be buyers starting this summer.

Most of the picks they can acquire from the Nets are all protected and won’t drop til who know when.

The Nets, I’m certain, won’t give up both Favors and this years top pick. Likely one or the other.

Doesn't add up

The move is more about getting a star when they move to their next arena in 2 years. Not really about building a great team from the ground up (like Jeff mentioned). They are at the bottom of the league in attendance and this whole pursuit of Melo seems desperate to me. I think they are kind of being toyed with by Melo and Denver while they continue to wait on us while we leverage their deal against other options.

I’m looking at the facts and this seems far fetched to me. NJ continues to help us by ramping up interest and scrambling to load up on assets they know we are looking for. The situation, as I see it – is getting desperate for them. We know we can wait until the 11th hour and their offer will stand, and even if that fails I think we should be able to get a plethora of good picks should they make a play for rental of Melo

That thing could be money.

You never know about the draft. Even in a strong class there’s plenty of busts. I agree, this class won’t be great as a ton of elite underclassmen are not going to come out. But, I think if you have a chance at getting a top 10 pick in any draft, you go after that thing hard. All bets are off in the lottery cause you do have a chance at that #1 spot.

Also, hilariously, the Spurs and the Riverwalk are literally the only two things to do in San Antonio from September-May

Then you have Fiesta, and then everyone stays inside and eats. That’s it. That is San Antonio, in a nutshell.

I went to the rodeo in Denver once

It was a giant fiasco. My wife’s friend arranged for a group of us to go. I think some of the money went to charity. Not sure. We were supposed to meet at a bar – well the whole thing was packed and it was impossible to park. Finally found a spot, but then we couldn’t find the people we were supposed to meet.

So now we had to leave the bar and find another spot to park to go into the rodeo. I wasn’t super excited to go in the first place, and by the time we found a second place to park, I was pretty pissed off.

Then we went in and watched the calf roping. I had no idea what was going on – it happened so fast, I couldn’t tell who did well and who didn’t. The people around who knew something about rodeo would immediately comment, but I was lost. There were like 20 people there, but we had only previously known my wife’s friend. But since there were so many people we didn’t actually get to talk to her much.

We wound up having a big fight, but on the plus side, my wife hasn’t asked me to go to a rodeo again.

Don't a defender's feet have to be set for it to be a charge?

Bitch-ass’ feet weren’t set. It was a block.

The Colorado Rockies aren't a team, they're an armada.

They can be moving

Melo gets called for charging all the time for lowering his shoulder on a drive when both players are moving.

Should have been a no call

But, yeah it was a charge. And just like the thousands of missed calls throughout NBA games are an accepted norm, it’s that much more important to make sure that players playing basketball is what decides the pivotal end of a great game. Rewarding the flop at that point in the game also rubs me the wrong way. Most of the time, at the end of a game refs don’t reward an offensive player who is blatantly going for a whistle instead of making a good play or a more difficult shot. Should be the same way on defense at the end too. In that situation – it’s a no call. Even if it was a “charge.” Stop acting like NBA refs call everything by the book and that’s a call they can’t afford to not make. It can go either way and at the end of a game like that you let it play out

love the look on melo's face in that photo

Kinda says it all.

If Melo wants that call to go his way, he needs to join the Spurs. Or the Lakers.

Utterly disgusting way to end a game. A great flourish negated by a flop and a chickenshit call with time expiring. Wow. It’s good to be the Spurs.

"It's Friday and the good news is Carmelo Anthony hasn't been traded yet."

huh? am i missing something? every day he isn’t traded, his value gets lower and lower. if anybody really thinks he’s going to change his mind because the Nuggets “beat” the Spurs, there is something wrong with them.

by Jim Jiminez on Dec 17, 2010 7:09 PM MST reply actions

All I have to say is

if we can’t beat Minnesota tomorrow when they are coming off a late night double header from playing the Blazers tonight, I doubt we will make the playoffs with or without Melo.

by CloudBurst on Dec 17, 2010 7:52 PM MST reply actions

"the charge" actually wasn't where the slipped away from us

On a previous play, Melo and Ty were passin back and forth and the pass was tipped, but we recovered, forcing a quick drive for 2pts. Had that pass not been tipped Melo was looking for the Three to win and it didn’t happen.

Sounds like the Magic are making a trade very soon. Sources believe a deal could be completed in the next few days.

Sources in Orlando are hinting that something will go down this weekend.

For Melo………. Nah most likely Arenas but you never know?

Saw on Yahoo just now

Man Orlando would really be going for it they do that trades. Arenas and Rashard will be making over $20 mil a piece for them in 3 years. What a bold trade, I really do hope Arenas gets his groove back

Yeah they are taking a big ass risk. It think they no they cant get Melo so this is there best option. They could be real good if Arenas goes back to the old Arenas.

It seems that this is just part of there first trade.

Alex Kennedy
Sources say Orlando has talked to a number of teams and could be planning two separate deals. Trading for Arenas may just be the start.

I'd say that is a pretty good summary of where we stand

Yeah I just finished reading this. It seems Melo is gonna have to make a choice does he want his money if so It looks like NJ is his only option. Or does he wanna be a knick and lose out on alot of money?

Exactly right

There is such a massive difference between what NJ can offer and what NY can offer, I think that is exactly the choice he has. I think, in the end, he’ll choose NJ, but that is conjecture based on two things. First, it’s a lot of money, even for an NBA player. Second, Melo basically said the other day that getting the extension is very important to him.

I guess that answers about permission and if they have talked
If the Nets and Nuggets come to terms on a trade, according to one source briefed on the teams’ discussions to date, Nets officials will request (and be granted) permission to have a face-to-face meeting with Anthony.

Just wanted to say that Carmelo commited an offensive foul. Its so fucking obvious. Just accept that Manu made a hell of a great play and move on. Everyone everywhere is talking about how good of a call that was, and the ref that was balsy enough to made it. It was the correct call, stop whining. There’s no discussion to be had, it was a frickin offensive foul.

and the ref that was balsy enough to made it.

Two refs made the call simultaneously – Denver Roundball Company sums this up perfectly in their recap of the event.

“As soon as Melo made contact with Ginobili both Mott and Workman made charge calls. However, the veteran Bavetta never budged an inch… The key was there was no disagreement between Mott and Workman. What they would have done if one had called a charge and the other a block would have been interesting to see or if one was the only one to call a charge? Regardless, it was the right call and the two referees who blew their whistles saw the same thing”

It was a great game and it is unfortunate that the ending eclipsed an epic contest.

For my 0.02. Go here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rl_v3yo3Lxo

stop it about 17 seconds in (1.3-1.4 seconds on the TV clock). Two things to note:
1) Where are Ginobli’s feet and how far away is Carmelo?
2) Isn’t there a wide open Nugget under the basket waiting to layup a pass?

The spurs are pretty good this year but it is an anomaly that they are 22-3. I fully expect us to lose 4 more games before the end of the year. We are not good front runners and have always performed best from second or third.

If Anthony does leave, it would be nice to see Karl get equal talent back. There are too many stacked teams in the league as it is.

STIFF LIST (as of 2/21 by Jeff Morton)

1. OFFICIALS AT THE NUGGETS VS T-WOLVES GAME
In a short time frame the Nuggets went from up 9 points, to trailing by 3 points largely due to strange and downright erroneous calls from officials. Included in their greatest hits? Corey Brewer getting blocked out into the first row and somehow getting a foul called on him. Andre Millerbeing ejected for arguing a call where he was pummeled by Martell Webster and drew an offensive foul. Also, Luke Ridnour falling on his face and somehow drawing a foul. Nice going refs.

2. GEORGE KARL'S END OF GAME COACHING
In a very winnable game against the Thunder, your coach of the Nuggets decided to burn his two oldest players (Al Harringtonand Andre Miller) from the 8 minute mark of the third quarter, through the end of the game. Leaving them dead legged for overtime. Also, not subbing in defensive rebounders for Durant's last couple shots of regulation was a bit of a blunder. Gotta get better coach!

3. ROYCE YOUNG
Reading this article on CBSSports.com makes me wonder if good old Royce is secretly a Thunder fan ... oh wait. He also writes for Daily Thunder, the Oklahoma City Thunder's biggest blog. Go figure!! Listen Royce, dismissing that the Nuggets were down their two best players, and then using this game to prove a point about the Nuggets is a bit ... I dunno ... "salty". Don't you agree?

4. THE "INJURED ANKLE LEPRECHAUN"
What is the appropriate sacrifice we need to beseech this malevolent leprechaun who has cursed the Nuggets. Ty Lawson and Arron Afflalo both injured their ankles on Monday night. In addition to Danilo Gallinari being out with a severe ankle sprain and Timofey Mozgov just coming back from one himself. Listen, if you need me to get a goat I will.

5. FEBRUARY
Seriously? Can we be done with this month already? Time for March. Green beer and an incredibly easy Nuggets schedule. Can't get here soon enough.
