Denver Stiffs 2010 HOF Inductees and T-Shirt Winners Announced!...
Before our Nuggets play some real basketball, we fondly look back at the past and present the third induction class into the Denver Stiffs Hall of Fame. We also proudly announce the winners of Denver Stiffs T-shirts for participating in the 2010 voting process...
Thanks to you, the great readers of this site, the Denver Stiffs Hall of Fame is filling up with some legendary Stiffs! Next year is going to be even better when nominees from 2008 - such as Blair Rasmussen, Tim Kempton, Kevin Brooks and Mo Martin - are re-eligible for induction. I can't wait. But until then, here are the results from the 2010 vote...
FORWARDS
Mark Pope (80 votes) and Raef LaFrentz (72)
Others receiving votes: Reggie Evans (56), Cadillac Williams (36), Jerome Lane (32), Popeye Jones (24)
Write-ins: Donyell Harvey (8), Linas Kleiza (2), Marcus Liberty (2)
Analysis: In the forward category for the third consecutive year, there was clearly a premium on being "terminally white" as Pope and LaFrentz join the likes of Bill Hanzlik, Ryan Bowen, Joe Wolf and Nikoloz Tskitishvili in the Denver Stiffs Hall of Fame. Many readers were divided on LaFrentz's inclusion as a nominee in the first place, noting that he had a solid rookie season and a decent career in Denver compared to his fellow nominees. But considering LaFrentz made $84 million as an NBA player and was drafted ahead of Vince Carter, Antawn Jamison, Dirk Nowitzki and Paul Pierce, he makes a fine addition to the hall.
CENTER
Priest Lauderdale (64)
Others receiving votes: Mengke Bateer (56), Joe Barry Carroll (20)
Write-Ins: Keon Clark (6)
Analysis: Lauderdale and Bateer were neck-and-neck in the voting, with Lauderdale barely edging out the "Great Wall" member by a mere eight votes. Lauderdale will enter the Denver Stiffs Hall of Fame having played in just 39 games in a Nuggets jersey, but those 39 games will now be forever remembered by Nuggets fans worldwide. It was surprising to see Keon Clark receive six write-in votes. Yes, he had a number of off-the-court problems but I always felt that Clark was productive as a Nugget and never liked the trade for an aging Kevin Willis in 2001. Speaking of Willis, I'm feeling an HOF nominee for 2011. Maybe we should create a category for "formerly good/great NBA players whose careers died in Denver" like Willis, Alvin Robertson, Ricky Pierce, Mark Jackson, Dale Ellis, Kenny Smith, Tim Hardaway, etc.
GUARDS
DerMarr Johnson (76) and Darnell Mee (60)
Others receiving votes: Yakhouba Diawara (56), Brooks Thompson (36), Jim Farmer (24), Willie White (16)
Write-ins: Anthony Carter (8), Cory Alexander (2), Glen Gondrezick (1)
Analysis: I wasn't surprised to see Johnson get the lion's share of guard votes given that he was such a recent Stiff in Nuggets history. I was, however, surprised to see another recent Stiff - Diawara - out-voted by Mee, a Stiff-worthy former Nugget whose 40-game Denver career ended over 15 years ago. Also, after reading the following anecdote from Denver Stiffs reader "CommishCH" I was disappointed that Thompson didn't get more votes. For those who missed his tale in the comments section of the nominee column, here it is:
I worked at McNichols in the mid-late 90s and after a few months I got a plum job of sitting courtside at Nuggets games. My only job was to make sure no one got loose on the court, and since the games were sparsely attended that was fairly easy.
One particular game I was at the corner across from the Nuggets bench. Again, late in the game, and again not many people there. Courtside at about the FT line was a man and his 5 year old daughter, having a good time regardless of the fact the Nugs were getting blown out, quality father-daughter time.
Brooks Thompson was guarding someone in garbage time and the other dude just blew by him and was promptly fouled. The dad, in only a slightly raised voice, said something to the effect of "C’mon Thompson, hustle!" Thompson was all the way at the 3pt line and heard the dad. Ol Brooksy launched into the loudest, most profane tirade at the dad in all the years I worked down there. "F*ck you, you get your a** out here and play, F this, F that, you piece of sh*t this" at the guy…sitting with his 5 year old daughter.
As a security guy I half wanted to go out on the court and eject Brooks. Class guy.
LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Bernie Bickerstaff (104)
Others receiving votes: Dan Issel (24), Paul Westhead (20)
Write-ins: Kiki Vandeweghe (2)
Analysis: Bickerstaff, the odds-on favorite to win the inaugural Denver Stiffs Lifetime Achievement Award, dominated this category by leaps and bounds. In fact, so many Denver Stiffs readers suggested that the award be re-named as "The Bernie Bickerstaff Lifetime Achievement Award" that the award for 2011 and beyond will be re-named in Bickerstaff's honor. A number of readers were conflicted on Issel who, despite being clearly deserving of this award for his tenure as team president and second tenure as head coach, remains a Nugget legend as a player and head coach the first time around.
And there you have it. Please join me in welcoming the esteemed 2010 induction class into the Denver Stiffs Hall of Fame. Here's how the Hall is shaping up so far...
FORWARDS
Tony Battie (inducted 2008)
Ryan Bowen (2009)
Bill Hanzlik (2009)
Raef LaFrentz (2010)
Mark Pope (2010)
Nikoloz Tskitishvili (2008)
Joe Wolf (2008)
CENTERS
Scott Hastings (2008)
Priest Lauderdale (2010)
Danny Schayes (2009)
GUARDS
Tariq Abdul-Wahad (2008)
Junior Harrington (2009)
Julius Hodge (2009)
DerMarr Johnson (2010)
Mark Macon (2008)
Darnell Mee (2010)
BERNIE BICKERSTAFF LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Bernie Bickerstaff (2010)
And now to our 2010 prize winners. There are now six different Denver Stiffs T-shirt designs available to choose from plus Denver Stiffs hats! In addition, the T-shirt price has been reduced to only $12.99. So if your member name isn't mentioned below, hopefully you'll order a Denver Stiffs T-shirt anyway...

Overall a good class this year!
Most of the guys i voted for were inducted into the DSHOF. If we did it again, I would probably change my guards vote from Mee to Thompson. I only found out later after I voted that Mee actually had a really good career over here in Australia where he played an important role on a championship winning team. Oh well, its still a really good class, classic. The life time acheivement award is rightfully named!

These guys laid the foundation for many, they are true Stiffs.

I get that this is a fun way for us
But seriously? I actually completely get why Brooks Thompson would react that way. If that story didn’t have “a guys little daughter” with him, he would have just been another dude sitting there spouting his mouth off at a guy who was on a shitty team in garbage time for mo reason…really? “hustle”?
Why do we at the behest of Andrew just assume that these guys aren’t hustling by watching their behavior. Seems like the dude got burned and fouled as to not give up an easy shot. If happens. Even professionals cam try really hard and not succeed.
This whole stiffs hall of fame thing is a little mean if you ask me. These guys got father than any poster on here, so to say they were a stiff is ludacris.
Oh, and Andrew, I hear we might be gettingca whole team of white dudes with really great character with a ceiling if 35 wins….thats what you want right?

I agree...
Not well written but great points!

Are you agreeing with Andrew after ripping into him?
Or agreeing with yourself…? (Note: that doesn’t make your points any more salient)

Feinstein actually responds to a comment post about an article he wrote!!! You have a responsibility to respond to what you write…I wish I had a better sense of humor for sure…
Keep up the good work, though, seriously man.

interesting
there’s a part of me that likes what Raugesen is saying and apart of me that is unsure how it feels about it.
Many thanks!
And believe it or not, Nate and I read just about every comment!

Denver Stiffs is Named after "Denver Nugget Stiffs"
Having a stiff hall of fame is awesome and give character to the site. U r one weird SOB if you take offense to calling guys that made tons of money playing sports and were well below average stiffs.
The whole Stiffs thing to me (aside from being a tribute to the words of the great Doug Moe) is rather humorous. Sure I’d lose a one-on-one game to every guy in the Stiffs Hall of Fame, but when comparing these players to their co-workers they truly are Stiffs.
Fans have and always will point out guys who are not as successful as their teammates, and with the suffering Nuggets fans have endured it’s fun with some old players and it brings up past names into current conversations, so in a weird way it honors them.

I'm not so sure
about losing a one on one with every guy. Some of them were probably much worse than you at basketball, they were just tall. There are lots of centers whose only talent is being tall, and if you could equalize for height, they couldn’t make your local rec league team.

Interesting!
Under these guidelines, when melo leaves, and he will, can he be inducted for the way he’s handled this situation and demanding a trade away from a good team for the lights of a bigger market and a 35 win team…to me, that’s a true Stiff!

No that's a d-bag, not a Stiff
Melo wishes he was as cool as half these Stiffs up here. Believe it or not there’s a level of coolness to being a true Stiff. It’s in the sense that no matter how utterly inept and unathletic you may be, your self awareness keeps you grounded. A true Stiffs never takes a situation for granted or feels they must play in a larger market. A true Stiff is dedicated to being a stiff, and Denver is a part of that equation. Stiffs need Denver, and Denver needs Stiffs. Melo, Alex English and David Thompson are kings in a land of peasants, and two have chosen to rule this land with honor and respect of the highest degree garnering eternal praise and angelic looking stone statues in the minds of all Stiffs forever. Melo on the other hand might be the Lucifer in the land of Stiffs; once holding a great position of respect and opportunity only to rot in the depths of the hearts of the Stiffs because of his greed and is now destined to burn forever.
How’s that for Stiffs lore?

It's relative
of those that made it into the highest league who were the crappiest among them. Well of course none of us can play as good of ball as them, none of us are on TV every game, getting paid millions of dollars to under-perform or sit on a stool. We don’t strive to make it to the NBA and seek other professions and specialties. These guys had a career and were the least skilled in their work force(the NBA).

Agree with Pope, Lauderdale and Bernie...
But Lafrentz? Really?? You can argue that he was a bit of a disappointment because of where he was drafted, but he actually had a decent career, was very talented, and held his own against bigger centers. If not for injuries, he might have been a Top 3 Niggets Center behind Issel and Mutombo. Doesn’t seem to fit Doug Moe’s definition of a stiff.
Also, hate to call Demarr a stiff. He had great talent but was never the same after his car wreck. The guy could ball, though.
And, Darnell Mee seems like such a blip in Nuggets history that he doesn’t deserve such a prestigious honor.
Rob “Fat Little Hog” Williams must be on this list! Ask Moe if Rob was a stiff or not. Maybe all of the awardees must be approved by Doug Moe before they are official?

An interesting twist … run the teams by Moe himself!

I like the Doug Moe idea
I’m sure this has been considered, but a sort of ‘renaissance’ series of interviews with Nuggets personalities of the past would priceless. Even if they’re not comprehensive, just a candid retelling of a single game or locker room situation. I’ve been a Nuggets fan for almost 20 years, which seems long to me when I read of fans who became familiar with the team during the Melo era, but then someone else will comment about players and games from 20 years before I got on board and it’s always enlightening.

+1
Would love to see this site as well as the Kroenke’s spend more time and attention on Nuggets history. I still think an Andrew interview with Issel would be quite compelling and good for The Horse from a PR perspective. It’s time for Nuggets Nation to welcome Dan home. With Melo leaving, a strong case will be made that Dan is the true all-time Nugget.
by ACEIII on Oct 19, 2010 5:12 PM MDT via mobile up reply actions
I had a problem with Issel being nominated
He was a damn good player, and his first stint coaching provided us with one of the greatest moments in basketball. I think that cancels out what he did later.
Overall though….I think people need to understand this is just a fun thing and it’s kind of a backhanded tribute to the Nuggets….particularly Doug Moe.
Overheard during Nuggets radio broadcasts in the 80's: "....Hanzlik.....HEY HANZLIK...don't ever dribble the ball again or I'll bench your ass!" Doug Moe

Issel Deserves Better
Sure, he made a stupid remark, after a tough loss, while being yelled at by a drunken fan. He is human, but definitely not a racist, and a guy that gave his heart and soul to this franchise. Haven’t we all said something stupid or offensive in a moment of anger and frustration??
BRING THE HORSE HOME!!
issel got better than any single individual connected with the nuggets
AND HE PISSED IT ALL AWAY. quit making excuses for him. player, coach, gm and president. more is expected from those that have more. issel is where he is today because of dan issel. right now he is getting all the thought, kindness and consideration he has shown others. we all say something stupid in a moment of frustration and anger. we represent nobody but ourselves. issel WAS representing the nuggets. all the money, fame and power and poor dan cannot take a little heckling from a fan. that is horse shit and no way to represent the denver nuggets.
pick up a calf every day pretty soon you will be picking up a cow

BS
Dan has given more to the franchise than any other individual person. I get so tired of people judging a single remark in a bad moment, and trashing an entire career. We are so hyper-critical about issues of race, and most of it is self-indulgent hypocrisy. I would guess Issel has done far more to support understanding among the races than you ever will. Let’s get out of our glass houses and give the guy a break.
a quitter is a quitter
there is nothing wrong with being a quitter as long as he is YOUR FAVORITE QUITTER. talk about living in a glass house and self indulgent hypocracy. here are the facts. the 1st time issle quit it was in the middle of the season, he gave no advance notice and the reason he gave was he did not like the person he was becoming. how many quitters get a second chance like issel did. 2.5 million per year to be the general manager, coach and president. along the way he fires former teammate bill hanzlik as head coach, fires mike d’antoni AND TRADES AWAY CHAUNCEY BILLUPS. he got a 2.5 milliuon dollar break AFTER HE QUIT THE 1ST TIME. he embarasses himself, the state of colorado and the nuggets for a second time AND QUITS AGAIN FOR A SECOND TIME. now you want to rehab his image at stan’s expense, the expense of the present coaching staff and all the fans for a 3rd time. face facts your hero is a 2 time quitter and should never be given the opportunity to be a 3 time loser at the expense of the denver nuggets.
pick up a calf every day pretty soon you will be picking up a cow
we're on a mission from god
Wow! You have Issel Issues!!
You obviously have some rage over your idol Melo quitting on our city, so it is understandable. Let’s present a more clear picture of The Horse than your distorted ramblings:
1) Naismith Hall of Fame
2) NBA All Star
3) Rookie of the Year
4) All Star MVP
5) j Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award
6) ABA Champion
7) ABA All Star
8) ABA Rookie of the Year
9) ABA All star MVP
10) missed only 24 games in 15 Seasons
11) 5th All Time Scorer in Pro BB History 27,482 Points
12) 1994- Coached Nuggets to Biggest upsets in NBA playoff history.
13) 1st All-time Scorer in Kentucky Wildcat History
14) 1976- Led Nuggets to a 60-24 Record
I would say your criticism pales in comparison to all Issel accomplished in Denver. He has one of the more storied sport careers in Denver History and deserves to be welcomed back fully into the Nuggets family.

It's Gonna Be Alright...
Take a breath and relax. If I had known you had such rage and anger over Dan Issel, I would have never posted some kind words for him. You are right, the NBA gives the Citizenship Award to shitty human beings every year. You probably have a right to be so critical of Issel as a person because you have never said a stupid thing in your life (this thread excluded), or had a career set-back. It’s obvious you have been more accomplished in your career than Issel was in his, and have every right to be angry and hurt over Issel’s comments after a tough loss to a drunken fan who was screaming at him. So, I will back off my support for the franchise showing some respect to one of its all-time greatest players, you win. He deserves to never be spoken of with any regard again. In fact, let’s take down his retired jersey at the Pepsi Center, and put an asterisk next to his name in the record books (such a poor human being as Issel should be wiped clean of any connection to the Nuggets). After all, he is right up there with OJ based on that single comment he made while leaving the court. That shitty human being Issel even had the nerve to retire as a Denver Nugget!
So, I’ll shut-up about the The Horse – you have clearly won this debate. I would, however, encourage you to have your Xanax ready and your Sponsor on speed dial when Melo forces his way out of Denver and is wearing that Knicks jersey.
stan does not owe issel a pitty party or another job
i knew who dan issel was 10 years before you ever heard of him. you are just being inconsistent and i called you on it. melo and issel are both quitters and the nuggets are better off without both of them. stan made the right move in getting rid of issel. he offends a large population of the denver population and his coworkers. dan issel is where he is at right now because of dan issel. quit making lame excuses about a drunken fan, what mel gibson has said in the past or oj simpson. how do you know the fan was drunk? i remember now because deadbeat dan the quitter issel said so.
