You wouldn't know it by watching these two teams go head-to-head last season, but there was a time when this incarnation of the Nuggets dominated LeBron James' Cavaliers.
Prior to the 2008-09 NBA season, Denver had beaten Cleveland five straight times and had won all but two games since LeBron James' arrival in 2003. Among those wins were Nuggets victories by 22, 30 (at Cleveland in 2008), 11 and 12 points.
That all changed last season, though, when Cleveland bested Denver by 11 at Cleveland early into the season and then embarrassed Denver with a 17-point victory on December 19th. And while it would be nice to see the Nuggets exact some revenge on their fellow 2009 conference finals participant, we still don't know for sure if our two best players - Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups - or even if our backup point guard - Ty Lawson - will be playing or not. As of this writing, Billups and Lawson are "expected" to play with Melo remaining doubtful.
Without Melo and/or Billups/Lawson, I doubt the Nuggets can erase their recent woes against good teams - home or road. After a shaky start, the Cavaliers are virtually tied with the Celtics for the Eastern Conference's best record, have won five straight road games (including at Phoenix, at the Lakers and at Atlanta) and have won 13 of 15 overall. I was fortunate enough to see them play live against the Lakers on Christmas Day: this Cavs team is deep, can play big or small, fast or slow and when they're stingy on defense they're almost unbeatable. During this successful 15-game span, the Cavaliers have held opponents under 100 points 11 times and under 90 seven times.
And perhaps most importantly for Cleveland, their players are having fun again. At first, the Shaquille O'Neal experiment looked to be an utter disaster as the Cavs played .500 ball with him and much better without him. But as Shaq has played himself into (sort of) shape and his new teammates are getting used to playing with him, Cleveland's one-two punch of Shaq plus Zydrunas Ilgauskas (the best backup center in the NBA) gives smaller NBA teams fits.
Which brings us to our just-so-happen-to-be-undersized Nuggets...
Remember when I wrote recently that the 76ers and the Warriors are the teams you want to play when your stars are hurt? Well, the opposite applies to the Cavs. This is precisely the team you don't want to play unless your roster is fully healthy. At the very least, you need your best player out there. Moreover, the Nuggets - who lack size to begin with - will likely be without their backup center, Chris Andersen, for this matchup...a guaranteed sellout at Pepsi Center and the biggest home game of the season until the Celtics and Lakers come back to town.
In other words, get well soon, Melo. Very, very soon.
SCOUTING THE CAVALIERS...
Cavaliers Stiffs
-Delonte West: After playing impressively for much of the 2008-09 campaign, West spent his offseason getting caught riding a motorcycle while carrying a 9mm Beretta pistol, a .357 Magnum and a Remington shotgun in a guitar case. Because, you know, riding a motorcycle wasn't dangerous enough as-is. Oh, and West is averaging a career low 30% shooting from three-point range this season.
-Mike Brown's "offense": While the Cavs head coach continues to be a great defensive coach, his offensive sets remain head scratchers. And that's putting it kindly. Seven seasons into the LBJ era, the Cavs offense still consists primarily of LeBron over-dribbling three feet behind the three-point line until the shot clock winds down and he has to barrel his way to the rack one-on-four.
-Shaquille O'Neal's physique: In the final year of his contract (that will pay him just $20 million this season) and wanting to prove he can win one more ring, you'd think Shaq would have shown up in Miami-type shape this season. You'd think.
Cavaliers Non-Stiffs
-LeBron James: Do I really need to explain why?
-Mo Williams: In big-time games, Williams steps up. In recent games at Phoenix, at Sacramento, at the Lakers, against Houston and a back-to-back with Atlanta, Williams scored 20 points all but one time and made a number of clutch shots when Cleveland needed them most (and again, if you've seen their offense trust me, they needed them!).
-Zydrunas Ilgauskas: With his minutes cut by more than six per game, The Big Z has kept his mouth shut and produced off the bench. In fact, he regularly finishes games since Shaq can't be counted on to make a free throw in the fourth quarter (or the first three quarters for that matter).

last season at denver the cavs shot the lights out from 3 point land. labron, west and ilgauskas were hitting outside shots. denver will need to play hack a shaq by committee when o’neal is in the game. look for denver to try and run on cleveland to score in transition.

That kind of play is not in GK’s “playbook” He made that perfectly clear last year. I personally think it’s brillant. Thats why petro, allen, and GK forbid balkman play him by commitee and use all 18 of their fouls, but that wont happen and tonight will be a 20plus point blowout.

Shaq = Nonfactor
He will play well for ten minutes and then get winded at altitude. This game is going to be about containing Lebron (as always) and M. Williams, who has been playing lights out.
Don't sleep on Delonte West ...
West is the “J.R. Smith” of this team. He’s more often than not cold as ice, but can heat up in a hurry.
Denver can’t afford to concentrate solely on Bron-Bron and Mo Williams because West is capable of getting hot and being the X-Factor. West has scoring games of 21, 18 and more recently of 17 on Dec. 29th vs. Atlanta and 14 in the Cavs last game against the Wizards on Jan. 6th.
I fear that Afflalo will be matched up on Williams and if Billups/Lawson can’t go much that West can get in a rhythm on A.C. if Carter doesn’t focus on him.

Don’t sleep on DWest…He’s had his (well documented) off court problems and has really struggled in a few games, but any 6’3" guard who can and will repeatedly drive and dunk on guys who have 60+ pounds on him and are 6 or more inches taller has to be respected and played closely

Delonte
One of my favorite players to watch in the NBA. He’s also probably the funniest, next to the Big Diesel of course. I hope he’s overcome most of his problems. Those are some tough issues to deal with, especially being a public figure.

I would rather just take the L and get Lawson, Billups and Melo right. Let them rest if we’re not going to compete.

Trap Game
I think this is a trap game for The Lebrons. Coming to Denver with rest, thinking the Nugs are shorthanded….Nugs show up and play hard in front of an amped up home crowd on national TV. Melo limps out of the locker room (a la Willis Reed) in the 4th to drop 20. It is going to be a close game.

He was on the bench when the team was in Utah.
I’m wondering if like a reader pointed out if it’s uncomfortable for his knee to be in those folding chairs and getting it bumped by teammates walking by or sitting down might not be so fun (would hate to have him get crashed into on a freak play and get re-injured). If being in the back getting treatment or just resting the knee will help him get back faster I don’t mind him not being on the bench.

No one is bashing
Just saying the dude isn’t a leader and that he needs to pass the ball and play in the flow of the offense. Nugs don’t win if their best offensive player only plays one on one (or two). Plus it is pretty weird that he isn’t sitting on the bench in his absense.

Why don’t they tell Ben Hochman from the DP where Melo is when he undoubtedly asks about Melo’s absence? Seems like nipping these kinds of things in the bud is PR’s job… It’s not like they have to explain the presence of guns in the locker room or anything like that.

I asked several people "in the know" about Melo's absence...
…during Tuesday night’s game, and no one could give me a straight answer. I’m not looking for a reason to bash Melo, but given that Melo was out there for EVERY game he was hurt last season, this makes absolutely NO sense. I specifically asked about “getting treatment in the locker room” and was told that’s total bullshit. Note that Bird wasn’t out there, either.
Call me old school, but there’s no valid reason/excuse for Melo not to join his teammates on the bench for 3 hours a couple times a week. I won’t buy any excuse…

Did he have knee issues last season?
I don’t recall…If not, perhaps as others have pointed out..the sitting and the potential for him to get jostled, might outweigh the need for him to be on the bench.
I think considering all he does for the team, this can be overlooked.

Birdman should be out there, too. This is an across-the-board deal. If you’re hurt, wear a suit and support your teammates. I’ve heard that the “getting treatment in the locker room” excuse holds no water and it makes sense if you consider that…
a) the trainer (Jim Gillen) and fitness guru (Steve Hess) are with the team on the bench!
and
b) games are played at night. I assume they get treatment during the day.

that the Cavs just on Wednesday cut Coby Karl from their roster. I bet papa Karl is pissed and would really love to win tonight.
BTW: is the guy who writes for the Cavs’ site the same John Bena who runs the MileHighReport SB site for the Denver Broncos?
I doubt that even GK would have kept him on the roster..did a nice job in preseason making the team (nice shot, good hustle), but never shot the ball and turned it over almost once a minute when he did get in once the reg season started..I liked him for his hustle and never quit style of play

Cavs won't trade Ilgauskas for anybody
He survived through some nasty foot injuries and some extremely crappy Cavs teams, and is a saint to many Cavs fans. Why would them trade him for another SG with some off-court problems?
That being said, why would we do that when we know that Z will either retire or rejoin the Cavs at the end of the season?

guard rotation
now would be the time to start earl smith. look for billups to do a replay of the blazer game. chauncey will only play the first half. if nene is out they will need rebounding from someplace. graham will see time at shooting guard without lawson in the game and smith playing limited minutes at the point.

I hate these 8:30 starts
will the national media ever realize we are not on pacific time but instead on mountain..yes that exists. Why start an east coast game at 6(so 8 at the game location) and then our game at 8:30 espn? So to put this in perspective
this same cavs team beat the Lakers by 15 in LA, we beat them without Melo and Ty(and Chauncey played less then he will with a few games under his belt). Now the Lakers lose to the clips and blazers while we look like a tough squad again. Hope has arisen within me again.
