In praise of Kenyon Martin...

72206_suns_nuggets_basketball_medium_mediumWhile the Nuggets have lost six of nine games, Kenyon Martin didn't get the memo about playing lackadaisical defense and careless, cowardly offense.

Star-divide

As the idiot who suggested the Nuggets consider trading Kenyon Martin for Shaquille O'Neal several weeks ago and as a longtime critic of K-Mart's acquisition in the first place, let me be the first to say: thank god K-Mart is on Nuggets right now.  Without him, we'd be on a nine game losing streak.

Watching his teammates fold like deck chairs during the absences of Chauncey Billups and Carmelo Anthony, K-Mart has manned up to the tune of 13.8 ppg, 10.8 rpg (including almost three offensive boards per game), 1.8 spg and 53% field goal shooting.

But the numbers don't tell the whole story.  K-Mart has made timely steals and blocks, offensive put backs (we witnessed another last night), has been taking the ball hard to the rack and has been giving us a repeat of the defensive effort we were all enamored with during the playoffs last season.  Frankly, I can't remember a time when K-Mart played this well for this long in a Nuggets uniform.

Prior to the beginning of last season, K-Mart's tenure in Denver had been nothing short of an expensive failure.  But as chronicled here and elsewhere, K-Mart owned up to his past transgressions directly with his head coach and teammates before the 2008-09 season kicked off, and has led by example ever since.  Rather than take his guaranteed money and sulk away into the NBA netherworld a la Darius Miles, Steve Francis and other high profile lottery picks who showed flashes of great talent only to ultimately disappoint, K-Mart - like his coach and many of his Nugget teammates - had a career renaissance last season.  Throughout the 2008-09 campaign, K-Mart's defensive improvement and unselfish play were critical to the Nuggets ultimate success.  And for those of us fortunate enough to watch him play up close and in-person, K-Mart has made watching defense as exciting as watching offense.

In the past, I had been told by several Denver media guys who cover the Nuggets that K-Mart can be one of the more "cerebral" players on the team.  At first, I didn't believe it (after all, K-Mart is still prone to foolish technical fouls, should never shoot a long range jump shot and is still somewhat of a Stiff around the rim on those offensive put backs).  But seeing him play more and more, I totally get it.  K-Mart has basically morphed into the Nuggets version of Rasheed Wallace (sans the god awful three-point shooting and poor conditioning): he's the smartest defensive player on the floor, interacts with the fans in a fun way, plays with enough emotion for the entire team combined, talks trash to his opponents in a joking manner and his teammates clearly love him.  And unlike Sheed, K-Mart gets along with and respects his coach.  When I asked George Karl about his relationship with K-Mart after all they've been through, Karl beamed with pride and said "I really like Kenyon."

All that said, K-Mart still has a ghastly, absurdly high contract for a player of his caliber and it cripples the Nuggets future cap space flexibility.  K-Mart is due to make $16.5 million next season, a player option, but if the wheels come off this Nuggets season and/or an opportunity arises to shed that contract, the Nuggets have to consider it (hence my silly Shaq trade idea, although Cleveland is actually playing great with Shaq now).  Or, maybe we'll get lucky and K-Mart will agree to either a) not exercise his player option (NO chance) or b) restructure his contract to stay in Denver longer but take less money next season (somewhat of a chance).

The Nuggets have been in disarray lately due to some legitimate and some not-so-legitimate reasons.  We shouldn't diminish the impact of Billups' injury, but the Nuggets did get a home game against Dallas with a healthy Melo during this stretch of games, got to play the Kings with their best player (Tyreke Evans) unavailable and last I checked the woeful 76ers and Warriors - who the Nuggets were lucky to have gotten a split given how they played - are exactly the types of teams you want to play if your best players happen to be out.  The other losses are more understandable...

...at New Orleans: with Chris Paul, no longer a slouch plus the Nuggets had no Chauncey Billups. (K-Mart pulls down 13 rebounds.)

...at Memphis: I called this "a bad loss" but the Grizzlies have become one of the NBA's hotter teams and again, no Billups for Denver. (K-Mart goes for 12 points but grabs just five rebounds.)

...at Portland: on Christmas night and only had Billups for a half.  Although it should be noted that Portland has no centers and Brandon Roy was banged up.  (K-Mart has twelve points, 14 rebounds, two steals and played stingy, tough defense throughout.)

And of course, the Nuggets pulled off a shocking, admirable victory at Utah that we shouldn't forget about.  (Thanks to another great K-Mart performance: 12 points, 12 rebounds and three steals while having to deal with Carlos Boozer and Paul Millsap.)

So in looking back at a few rough weeks of Nuggets basketball sans Billups for most games and sans Melo for four outings, I'd argue that they Nuggets should have beaten Sacramento and Philadelphia, but they probably should have lost at Utah.  I'm also putting Dallas in the "toss up" column: they're an elite team and we were undermanned.  In other words, from my vantage point that Nuggets are about 1.5 games off their pace (unless you thought those New Orleans, Memphis and Portland games should have been sure-fire W's...I certainly don't in hindsight).

And if it wasn't for K-Mart's recent play, we'd be a lot further off our pace than that.

Stuck around

Good read. The guy had every reason to ride off into the sunset a la Francis, Miles, and Olowakandi. He had already gotten paid, had micro-fracture surgery on both knees, had a team that was bowing out every year in the first round, and a city full of fans who wanted him gone. He could have taken the easy way out, but here he is, still ballin, still playing tough as nails D, and still trying to will teams to victory when no one else is. While I do agree he is overpaid, and I do agree his antics hurt the team in the past, I gotta give mad props to a guy for stickin in there when the going got tough.

I think K-Mart likes being the lead dog

Seems like he really thrives being the “shot-caller” when he gets the chance. I hope he can continue this even when Chauncey and Melo get back because I have a feeling I trust this team a hell of a lot more whith K-Mart in charge instead of Melo. He could take in down a notch on the lanuage level though. It was pretty funny hearing him call Dalembert a “dumbass” to his face the other night though.

Love the trash talk

But I agree with you that I trust the team being led by Billups and Kmart more than Billups and Melo. The win and loss columns clearly support this.

Must have laughed for 5mins after the "offensive foul dumbass"

and kept rewinding and laughing some more! I also agree that we will be better in the long run, but on the offensive end of the floor. We had a bad habit of dump to Melo or JR and play one on five. I think this stretch will let everyone else know they don’t have to be spectators.

If the moon were made of spare ribs would you eat it?

nuggets will be better off in the long run

what does not kill you makes you stronger. the short term pain denver experiences now will help this team the rest of this season, in the playoffs and the future of this franchise. kmart has been a great example for every player. first pick of the draft, going to the finals twice, losing in the finals twice, coming back from catastrophic injuries and becoming a force all over again. it is not how many times you get knocked down in life that counts. it is how many times you get back up. kenyon martin is worth every penny he is paid and has earned every last dime.

I agree

The Nuggets bench was too short, and getting Graham and maybe Malik Allen comfortable with minutes in needed. Also, having KMart take more of a leadership role from Carmelo might be helpful. And, finally, Birdman is resting his bum knee while his ankle heals. Hopefully, the Nugs will go on a tear.

by margabelle on Jan 7, 2010 6:59 AM MST up reply actions

no way

I’m sorry, Andrew’s right, regardless of how much courage K-Mart has put forth, his basketball stats simply don’t translate to his salary, especially when he can’t guard centers. His salary truly is crippling. Don’t forget that Kenyon’s stats were a major reason his team lost in the finals.

by NugzD on Jan 7, 2010 8:08 AM MST up reply actions

The merits of the contract...

is a dead issue long ago determined that KMart is not worth the money. With that said, it’s nice that KMart didn’t take the money and run after his surgeries and meltdown with Karl 3 seasons ago. Although he’s paid too much, KMart is performing his contract in good faith.

by margabelle on Jan 7, 2010 8:41 AM MST up reply actions

I'm down with K-Mart

He’s a bad man…in a good way.

Also, watch out for the Clip Joint. When they get Blake back, they are going to be more than tough. No one will want to face them in the first round if they get there….although they are going to have to put together a heck of a run. Just sayin.

by Pusherman on Jan 7, 2010 8:52 AM MST reply actions

This post is long overdue

K-Mart brings intanglibles to this ball club. Say what you will about his salary, the second he’s gone you will notice his absence in the win/loss column.

Great write-up Andy.

I’ve always been a huge K-Mart fan and lobbied for Denver to sign him away from the Nets (not deal three first round picks for him!) his entire “contract season”.

And if like BeefySwats we’re tossing out K-Mart stories you can read my thoughts on him before the season right here. Ha ha shameless self promotion! But sort of a fun look back with how he’s playing now.

He brings such an intangible necessary quality. And really how thuggish is a guy with tattoos of lips and the drama/comedy faces on his wrists..

He’s fantastic…

It never ceases to amaze me how many players have basketball-themed tattoos. We get it already, you like basketball.

Hilarious

Pusherman is hilarious. I used the “AC of…” line at work today. Made myself laugh because nobody else had a clue what I was talking about.
In regards to Kenyon, it’s great to finally be getting a ROI from him. Those first few years were pretty lean times.

When he plays we will always have a good chance at winning

I said it before, I was wrong about K-Mart when this team was a disaster. What he brings to our team is the reason why the Nuggets are so hated around the league. His performance in the last week speaks for itself. His career should show players like JR that they can change. If we had another defensive presence like him that could guard teh Cneter position we could be scary as shit.

… he’s pretty much a “foxhole” guy. The guy that you would with out a doubt, want in your foxhole when going to war. He’s on the NBA all-foxhole team for sure.

Right on fellas

I don’t have any man crush issues or anything, I just think the game needs guys like K-Mart and he has a bad rep that’s not really deserved… Kinda like my other dude Chad Ochocinco (can you tell I’m a Cincy guy? That’s my one true bias to liking him in the first place, but I think it’s all justified anyway).

It just gets under my skin when people get on his case. So he will choke you out… so what? If he does, you probably deserved it. If he has his boys rough you up in the stands… you probably deserved it! If he fouls the shit outta you, it’s because he knows what time it is and is just sending a message that I’m not one to argue if it needs to be sent or not. LOL.

The STIFF LIST (as of 7/26 by Nate)

STIFF #1: COLORADO ROCKIES
The Rox have lost eight of their last 10, including six in a row. During the six-game losing streak Colorado has been outscored 33-13 ... and they might soon be the reason by buddy Rory has a massive heart-attack. But there are still 63 games to go and an upcoming eight-game homestand is hopefully just what the team, and Rory, needs to turn things around.

STIFF #2: MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES/DAVID KAHN
Replacing a 24 year-old point guard with a 29 year-old point guard is just a sound NBA move ... uh? Kahn handed Ramon Sessions a 4-year $16 million contract last offseason and just gave the same deal to Luke Ridnour this offseason. In order to make room for Ridnour, Kahn shipped Sessions and young big man Ryan Hollins off to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Delonte West (who is still facing weapons-possession charges). Maybe Ricky Rubio will get to the T-Wolves before Ridnour's contract expires, but don't count on it.

STIFF #3: TRACY MCGRADY
McGrady has been shopping his services this offseason and after getting nibbles from the Lakers, Clippers, and most recently the Bulls ... T-Mac is still without an employer. The 31 year-old guard, with a rich injury history, apparently is not ready to accept a reduced role. Will McGrady's stubborness land him on a lottery team where he'll try to prove he can still be "the man" or will he accept being a role player and wind up in Chicago gunning for that elusive title?

STIFF #4: DANNY AINGE
The Celtics did lose defensive ace Tony Allen to the Memphis Grizzlies, but re-signing Marquis Daniels to a one-year $2.5 million deal is a little crazy. Daniels should be thanking agent Mark Bartelstein ... maybe the rapper can sing his agent a song. (Daniels is in the yellow shirt in the video)

STIFF #5: NUGGETS SLEEPING ON SIZE
The Nuggets decided to bring back Anthony Carter on a one-year $1.3 million deal. Do the Nuggets really need a third point guard heading into training camp over another big body? Check out some names still on the free-agent market: Louis Amundson (yes he'll require more money), Fabricio Oberto, Kwame Brown, Anthony Tolliver, DJ Mbenga, Nathan Jawai, Josh Boone, Kyrylo Fesenko, and Joey Graham. Denver still has the bi-annual exception to spend ... so maybe there is still hope of grabbing somebody.
