Billups & Martin combine for 52 in win (Nuggets/Spurs recap)

Bird_block_medium I dare any Nuggets fan to have a bad day after a win in San Antonio. You can’t do it. It’s practically impossible. The best part of Sunday afternoon’s win? We get to spend the rest of the day riding this high.

Star-divide

I watched this game in pretty goofy order. I had the game taped courtesy of DVR and missed the first half and planned to play catch up … then my buddy Hunter called and asked me to come watch the second half with him. Well, you have to watch Nuggets games with buddies if they ask so I cruised over to his place and caught the second half before seeing the first half.

First things first … the scoreboard doesn’t tell the whole story. Denver’s 103-89 win was nice, but Denver never was that comfortably ahead. Heading into the first half Denver rode a 12-0 run to finish the half up four points (45-41) and then coming out of the locker room the Nuggets continued their onslaught and pushed their run to 19-2 before the two teams started trading buckets.

When you play the Spurs … no lead is really safe and San Antonio made a bunch of runs in the second half. Denver fought off each Spur run, but did cough the lead up a couple times, but they never allowed the Spurs to get control of the game. And the two guys that ensured Denver wouldn’t lose … Chauncey Billups and Kenyon Martin. While it was really a team effort win, Billups and K-Mart just stood out. The two combined for 52 points and hit big shot after big shot.

Denver won both games in San Antonio this season and perhaps as we saw with the Thunder game Friday night … Denver is no longer the Spurs’ "Little Brother."

Additional nuggets:

--Going back to Billups. Mr. Big Shot finished with 25 points, 6 rebounds and 11 assists in 45 minutes. After the game Billups seemed eager for Melo to get back on the floor … while carrying the team is probably a lot of fun, it can also be very taxing. The Spurs, after allowing Billups 13 first half points, started doubling him and dared the other Nuggets to beat them. Billups was still crafty enough to put up 12 additional points, but he also got a lot of help from his running mates. Is it too soon to start planning to erect a statue in Billups’ honor outside Pepsi Center?

--K-Mart put up 27 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists in 39 minutes. Martin somehow channeled Melo’s midrange game against the Spurs and shot 12-21 in the game (including another garbage time three-pointer) and hit 2-3 free throws. Martin’s hard work is paying off and this is obviously the best the Nuggets have seen him play … he’s an All-Star in my book.

--Arron Afflalo was perfect today. Perfect? Yep, the shooting guard was 6-6 from the field and 2-2 from three-point land for 14 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists in 38 minutes. Afflalo has been so good of late that his minutes are starting to reflect the trust George Karl has in him. I applaud Karl for rewarding his strong play. I recall seeing Afflalo take his man off the dribble and hit a pull-up jumper right in his defender’s face … loving his confidence.

--J.R. Smith continues to bounce back after his rocky Hornets games. Smith was a big reason for Denver’s late first half fun and hit some big shots down the stretch for Denver and was even a presence once again on the boards. Smith finished with 18 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists in 32 minutes. The Nuggets guard rotation is up there with any team in the league. Being able to throw Billups, Afflalo, Smith and Lawson at teams is almost unfair.

--Chris Andersen was big on the glass for Denver and was trying to do the dirty work for the Nuggets underneath the glass. The refs don’t often reward Bird and he is constantly being pushed and elbowed under the hoop, but I applaud him for getting dirty with it and being Denver’s junkyard player. Andersen finished with 5 points, 7 rebounds and 1 block in 28 minutes. I still wish that Bird had better hands under the hoop to go along with a bit better awareness, but you can’t have it all.

--Nene fouled out in 29 minutes of play, but was battling all day. The Brazilian finished with 6 points, 8 rebounds and 2 assists. Nene hit a key jumper down the stretch for Denver and played some good defense on Tim Duncan (always a tough draw). Nene is a key member for the Nuggets and his style fits with the team. Nene continues to be an underrated member of the rotation.

--Joey Graham only played 16 minutes and finished with 6 points and 1 rebound. Graham has done a great job filling in for Melo and shows he should be a part of the rotation once Melo returns, but finding minutes for Graham hasn’t been easy when Denver is healthy.

--Ty Lawson continues to see his time on the floor dwindle. Law played just 14 minutes and finished 0-3 from the floor for 2 points (free throws) and grabbed 2 rebounds. Lawson may have to step up tomorrow night against the Kings, but Tyreke Evans’ size will prove difficult for playing Lawson. The rookie has hit some type off wall and his game confidence seems a little down, but I expect him to bounce back.

A great win in San Antonio and a little closer to getting back to .500 on the road. Antonio McDyess had a great game for the Spurs. When I saw his final numbers I was a bit confused … it seemed like Dyess scored like 20+ points, but he only finished with 13 points on 6-11 shooting. I can still see him hitting jumpers! Denver did a great job of defense on Duncan today … he still had 16 points and 10 rebounds, but he wasn’t able to take command of the game. Denver is in great position to sweep the Spurs this season and that would be a great feat. We’ll see the Spurs in Denver the rest of the way after finishing 2-0 against them on their floor this season.

What would happen if Melo scored less...

What would happen if we had a much more balanced offensive attack? Would the Nuggs be a stronger team not having to depend on Melo for 29 points a game?

by spokenwar on Jan 31, 2010 3:12 PM MST reply actions

well thats what we did last year

the only reason it looks like we play good w/o him is cuz other players are stepping up… if they could play like that every game we would be the best team in the game

by hvino on Jan 31, 2010 3:34 PM MST up reply actions

+1

It seems to me that whenever Melo is around people are much more hesitant and inclined to do less in terms of scoring. It’s almost in a way like they are afraid to ask for opportunities to score which would require Melo giving up the ball. I’m not suggesting it’s Melo’s fault because it obviously isn’t, just saying kind of what I notice.

by GoldenNugget on Jan 31, 2010 11:24 PM MST up reply actions

I place the blame 50/50...the other players and Melo

Melo tends to trust his offensive game too much, and forces through double teams. It’s frustrating sometimes to watch. On the other hand, when players actually ROTATE to the basket Melo usually finds them. The only person who seems to move when Melo has the ball is Chauncey. The biggest culprit in this is Kenyon. When Melo has the ball he just stands at the top of the key and watches.

Hopefully when Melo comes back they can work out these issues.

I’d like to see Melo increase his assists by 2 a game and his rebounding by 2 as well. He doesnt have to score less to increase his assists, and rebounds create offense

Do you see what I saw???

It seems to me that the Nuggs had more movement in their half court than I can remember seeing. True that KM does like that spot at the top of the key, but the team just moved. Comparing the movement from the loss at OKC it looked like night and day.

What are you asking?

I’d rather have Melo go for 22 ppg, 8 rpg, and 6 apg as opposed to 29 ppg, 6 rpg, and 3 apg.

However, I really don’t care as long as we win games

I like the fact that Nuggets players are capable of stepping up and playing at a higher level when a regular rotation guy is out. That is definitely a luxury to have in the NBA.

As far as distributing the offense more, it doesn’t matter who scores the points, as long as we are doing so efficiently. Having Melo go for 30 a game is fine as long as he is not taking too many shots to get his points. That’s why getting to the line is so important for Melo because it makes him a deadly efficient scorer. So as long as Melo can get 30 points while shooting a high % from the field and the line, there is no need to force him to distribute the ball more.

Pretty stoked that everyone on the team is raising there games while Melo is hurt. This will be crucial in a 7 game series vs the Fakers.

more is less and less is more

the stat that jumps out at me the most is twelve 3 point shot attempts for the entire game followed by 9 makes for 75%. smith’s game is starting to evolve. only four 3 point attempts and making 3. the biggest plus is he made 5 of 6 from the free throw line. denver won the rebounding battle 41 to 33. lawson’s play has dropped off when cb1 returned from injury. the less playing time means less production. i am not concerned about ty hitting the rookie wall or anything like that. there is an old saying. better to live one day as a lion than a lifetime as a lamb. i would rather see nene playing tough and fouling out than having him hold back to stay on the floor. kmart continues to be a lion every game. he has been the king of the jungle in the nba for the month of january.

Huge win

Any game in which we can beat the Spurs is a great win. My lucky blue boxers may not have been able to help the Nugs win vs. the Thunder, but my #15 jersey/shirt looked like it helped. :)

Do we know if Melo will be back at home vs. the Kings tomorrow for sure? Also, does it seem like to anyone else that Kenyon is a MUCH better player when he’s the one expected to step up in absence of Melo? Great game anyway, glad to see Afflalo and JR have wonderful games.

That was a fun game to watch

Billups, KMart, awesome, etc.

And how about Arron Afflalo? I remember when he hit a rough patch in December and we were all worried. Now he’s one of the Nuggets’ key cogs. He does everything and he does everything well. Seems to me he has single-handedly replaced the production of Dahntay and Kleiza…especially now that he’s gotten it going offensively.

Terrific Game

Always great to see the Nuggets beat the Spurs…in San Anton no-less!
Most fans on this site remember the Spurs knocking us out of the playoffs every year for 10+ years! Seemed like it anyways…
I know it’s been said before, but Billups play post-injury vs. the Billups pre-injury is unbelievable. I can’t wait for Melo to come back. High expectations, no doubt.
Everytime I watch Kenyon, all I can think is ‘Amazing’. Considering where this guys was 2-3 years ago (couldn’t even walk) to where he is now…amazing. I’m not going to go and call Kiki a genious (NJ?!), but it’s nice to finally see the Nuggets getting a return on this old investment.
2 out of 3 on this trip, without Melo, good stuff.

We needed this one . . .

because the the next two weeks are going to be tough, with 2-3 losses likely. I hope one of them isn’t to the Jazz, who are creeping up on us, but it probably will be since it’s the trailer of a road back-to-back. Melo will be rested though, so anything’s possible.

Here are some of the next games:

at Utah
vs. Dallas
vs. Spurs
at Cleveland
Washington
at Boston

I might have confused some of the at/vs things, but I’m sure that the teams are right. Aside from an easy game with Washington, all these games are difficult. I still can’t believe our struggles against SacTown

Nugs won't lose to the Jazz

They match up too well with them. They could play them on the third of a back to back to back and the Jazz with 2 days rest and they would still beat em. Mark my words, just like the prediction of losing to the Thunder and beating the lowly Spurs.

by Gasus on Feb 1, 2010 11:54 AM MST up reply actions

Great game

Just as I predicted, I think Wednesday, the Nuggets bounced back from a loss in OKC with a big win over the Spurs.

I was only able to watch the first half and had to DVR the rest of the game to visit a friend in the hospital. But as frustrated as I was watching parts of the first half and the BS officiating, I was able to feel good when I left because of that 12-point run.

It didn’t last when the Spurs immediately made it a game in the third quarter. It seemed like every time they the Nuggets needed to, they hit a big shot or got a critical stop. This really was a satisfying win, with the lone exception of seeing Lawson continue to struggle.

Anyway: How about Kenyon Martin? I’m really happy that he is playing so well. Especially with his first couple of years on the team, all those injuries and the acrimony between him an Karl. What a great player.

I don’t know what the schedule is after the game tomorrow, but I wouldn’t expect Melo to play. It would be nice, though, to give Billups and Martin a break. They must have a sore back from carrying the team the last week.

Regaurding Bird

From what I’ve seen lately, they don’t get him involved enough, and when they do, he usually passes up the shot. If he could just get more involved with the offense, he’d be more alert. However though, he should be alert no matter what.

K-Mart always plays ten times harder when Melo is out. The man’s a waling double-double. Go K-Mart!

I'm a little surprised at two things.

1. We were not reminded (again) of how we passed on DeJuan Blair who had 10pts on 4-4, 2-2 with 3 rebs and 1 bs in less than 11 minutes and used Birdman like a prepaid phone.

2. That Ken Mauer did not carry over his grudge match with KMart.

WOW what a great game, Chauncey, K-Mart, & Afflalo were AMAZING.

Only observation I have to add about this one is that the Nuggets did a great job closing out the 2nd, 3rd, & 4th quarters.

I would love to see the offense keep working well when Melo returns. One thing in particular, though — I don’t think you can count on K-Mart and Afflalo to shoot like that on any kind of regular basis. Those guys were just possessed today.

Nice Win for da Nuggs

Finally we are playing some more consistent D like last year except for OKC game(10 games now).

So whats going to happen when Melo come back??

1) Will he see how good the team is playing and try to fit his game into what we are doing well (score, play D, get some rebounds and assists)

2) Or will he come back are try to re-assert the scoring load for himself and stop the synergy we’ve got going (AI style)

A few years ago, it definitely be a #2 but now I think #1.

by starchild on Feb 1, 2010 10:07 AM MST reply actions

Unfair

The Nuggets are not a good half-court team when they play isolation offense and don’t pass the ball. This happens with Melo in the games sometimes.

And: It happens when he doesn’t play. Did you watch the OKC and Houston games? We won in Houston but only had seven assists or something. OKC was far less forgiving. Melo played neither of those games.

I have my problems with Melo not playing in the flow of the game, but I think it is a ridiculous conversation to be having to suggest that the Nuggets are somehow better off without him. It is true, the Nuggets have an awesome supporting cast around the two stars (Billups being the other) that means Denver goes to the playoffs without either one. But there is no way that Denver is a championship contender as they are now without Melo.

As for my problems with his game, all he needs to do is be more decisive when he gets the ball on the wing. Take a jump shot or (even better) drive to the rim. Don’t wait for the double-team before deciding. And if the double comes quick, pass it quick.

Rant over.

People say a lot of extreme and unmeasured things: JR goes through a slump and has bad body language and everyone wants to trade him. The Nuggs do pretty good without Melo and all of the sudden we don’t need him, etc. etc.

Your post was pretty good, all things considered.

10-man rotation for deep playoff push advocacy group — What is this and how do I join? Please tell me this isn’t a joke…

Just a group of like-minded Nuggets fans

Of which I am the only member. I’d love the company. You can be president if you want.

I keep meaning to write a fan post about why I think it is important to rest players like Billups and Nene and Martin to save them for a deep playoff push and expand the rotation. But I probably never will. Coach Karl, who I think is a good coach, seems pretty set in his ways.

sigh

I remember a few seasons ago I was hoping the Nuggets would cut down their rotation because it seemed like there were not defined roles on the team and minutes were being thrown all over the place …

I like having a more defined player rotation, but I’d agree that in certain games more rest should come for guys like Billups, K-Mart, Nene and Bird.

I've been wonder the same thing for a while now.

Chauncey’s playing at a all-star level now but will he be all spent by April,May. I think the 2 weeks he had off with the injury really re energized his game and gave him fresh legs. 45 minutes is too much when he got a back-to back scheduled. That’s what Ty was suppose to do….fill that niche. I’ve given up on GK expanding the rotation beyond the eight.

Though it won't happen

I think it would be a great fan post. That topic comes up often in unrelated threads; I’m sure everyone would love to weight in on that subject.

Heath tweeted 30 or so minutes ago

that Melo probably won’t go tonight(sigh).

The STIFF LIST (as of 8/30 by Andrew)

STIFF #1: J.R. SMITH
Remember when I wrote that J.R.'s "nine lives may be up"? Well, that was last January. With Denver police looking closely at J.R. allegedly attacking former 14er Damien Lolar at a recent Pepsi Center shoot-around, it's clear that J.R. will never mature and it's time to move him.

STIFF #2: LEON ROSE AND WORLDWIDE WES
After commandeering LeBron's departure from Cleveland, Rose and Wes are allegedly working to move Melo out of Denver. Let's hope the Nuggets do what's best for Denver and not these two franchise-destroyers.

STIFF #3: RIC BUCHER
The man who once guaranteed that Kobe Bryant had played his last game in a Lakers uniform has been gravy-training on other reporters' Melo-related stories all summer long. Who does Bucher think he is, a sports blogger?

STIFF #4: MARCUS JORDAN
Like father, like son. Last week, His Airness's 19-year-old son tweeted about dropping $50k at the Aria casino in Las Vegas prompting an investigation.

STIFF #5: INDIANA PACERS
Brandon Rush has been suspended five games for violating the NBA's drug policy and 2010 draftee Lance Stephenson was recently arrested on assault charges. Larry Bird sure is doing a great job re-shaping the Pacers' already shoddy image.
