Around SBN: NFL Owners Vote to Change Trade Deadline

Arron Afflalo

The more and more I watch this guy the more and more I think of Trevor Ariza and his role for the Lakers last year. As we all know, Ariza did a fair job on Carmelo, while he hit some very crucial 3 pointers to help the Lakers not only win our series but also the NBA Championship. I'm beginning to believe that we don't need J.R. anymore, and this year could be our year if we trade him somewhere for a legit big guy. The only difference between the two is that Ariza is 6'8 while Afflalo is 6'5, and Ariza could play more of a SF, where Afflalo is best at SG. Last year on the Laker's championship run, Ariza played about 25 minutes per game, averaging about 9 ppg while shooting just 32% from 3. Afflalo on the other hand, is averaging 25 minutes per game, averaging 9 ppg, while shooting an astounding 45% from 3 this year. He's a serious weapon to reckon with. All I'm saying is that Afflalo is our best SG, better than Smith, and that with another big guy, I believe that we could get over the hump. Also, something that worries me is that he's going to want some more money after this year, more than his dinky 2 mil that he's due next year. I'm really liking the young mold of this team, and with a future starting lineup of Lawson, Afflalo, Melo, Nene, and another big, we're going to be tough for the next decade.

The best of two worlds

I don’t think that JR should be traded. I guess everyone calling for his trade has either grown or is growing without growing pains.
GK has the best of two worlds Triple A and JR. If I were him I would interchange them. JR is in a slump shooting however he’s been improving on other aspects of his game. His D has improved and he’s looking to pass the ball.
Why not start JR and bring Triple A off the bench for a couple of games. Other teams would have to respect JR’s ability to shoot and Melo wouldn’t be doubled as much.

I dunno

Afflalo is used to starting. His starter/bench differential in production is pretty large, IIRC. I am not so sure bringing him off the bench is the answer when he’s had the hot hand lately.

Swats.

+1

Plus JR is used to coming off the bench. Let’s just all hope JR comes out of his funk soon and quit demanding trades during a 7 game winning streak.

Ya, but...

If Karl just would have started JR in the first place we wouldn’t be in this delima. I totally agree with Sam about bringing Afflalo off the bench right now as he has proved he is totally capable of scoring when he needs to. I actually think it would be more of an honor and a responsibility for AA to come off the bench and carry the primary roll of scoring rather than just being the weakest link in our starting lineup just so that Karl doesn’t have to show actual respect towards a guy who’s better than him, or WAS better than him.

What dilemma are we in that JR doesn't start?

That Melo gets doubled? I couldn’t follow what you meant.

I guess the whole dilemma of scoring off the bench

That’s what everyone seems so worried about. JR deserved to start for a couple of years now yet becuase of the concern for bench scoring he doesn’t, according to Karl. But I don’t believe that shit. We had one of the best benches last year in the whole NBA and this year it’s pretty damn good too, or would be even if JR started. Who knows, JR might not have gone through this whole slump if he had more confidence, which Karl seems determined to keep him from obtaining.

Why

would you trade JR soley for another big man? The big man we get, regardless of skill will only play 12-15 min a night b/c GK ain’t gonna take away from Nene, Bird and K-Mart. The Big can’t get JR’s minutes unless he plays SG. GK has a nice 3 man rotation with his bigs and could throw a 4th in but not for many minutes. If you trade JR you get AC taking his minutes, no scoring off your bench and a big that will play 15 min,

Instead of blowing up something that’s going good, why not be happy with what we got and be happy that AA is not only a better offensive player than D Jones but a better player all around that gives us a great chance to beat LA. I honestly like our team as is. Maybe a Chris WIlcox for a TPE just for injury insurance would be the only thing I’d do.

JR started very good last night. Made great passes and would have had 5-6 assists had Nene knew how to make a damn lay up. I think JR will be fine and start heating up later on in the year. I’d be down to try and start him as well. The rotation i set so JR finishes the games, but if AA keeps stroking from downtown I think he could be reliable to finish games alongside Melo and Billups.

I agree

but I wonder if part of JR acting up is a jealousy issue. This guy obviously wants to be the man offensively in Denver whether he’s starting or not. With his current slump and AA offensive explosion recently, it appears Afflalo has passed him out not only for a starting job but also for minutes. JR seems to want to shoot his way out of the slump but that’s not gonna happen. Hopefully he realizes he needs to step up in other aspects of the game much like AA does.
I think he’ll turn it around, I just hope he peaks come playoff time cause that’s when we really need him. GO NUGGS

rotation IS set to where JR finishes games.

by Garrett Olsen on Jan 26, 2010 10:00 AM MST reply actions

i think itll depend on the situation

for the rest of the season.

sometimes JR will finish the game. sometimes AA will finish the game. and sometimes Ty Lawson will finish the game, w/ Chauncey at SG.

difference between afflalo and smith

arron is a catch and shoot type player where earl will take his shot off the dribble. denver trades smith i look for joey graham to take smith’s role with the team. last season kleiza, smith and melo would take a 3 pointer off the dribble then jog back down the court on defense instead of following the shot. i like graham better then kleiza or smith because he will take a mid range jump shot in the context of the offense or drive to the basket, get fouled and make free throws. right now smith looks lost on defense. he had ten 3 point attempts against the bobcats. he started out ok but struggled in the 2nd half.

JR will not be traded

ESPN reports that according to team sources, Denver will not trade JR before the deadline. You may all now reconfigure your trade ideas.

spellcheck and the prodigy

I like Afflalo too, as much for what he doesn’t do ( compared to JR) as for what he does do. I also think he can be a good scorer off the dribble if called upon to do so, but he looks as if he feels out of his role when he makes a move toward the hoop or pulls up for a shot. But the athleticism is there if he needs to adjust his emphasis.
There’s room for both guys if JR comes back down to earth. If Nugg mngt doesn’t think he will, I like the idea going for a young big with upside – he won’t get many minutes this year anyway.
Lacking that, GK should really give either Allen or Petro consistent limited minutes, so they won’tgo into the playoffs cold.

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
