Ty Lawson drives around Portland Trail Blazers' Jerryd Bayless during their NBA Summer League basketball game in Las Vegas on Friday, July 17, 2009.

Box Score

It's not every day you see a triple overtime basketball game. Unfortunately, I only got to see the highlights of the Nuggets last Summer League game ... but it was still fun to see some basketball. Go ahead and take yourself a little view ... click here for the highlights.

Sonny Weems led the way with 28 points and 9 rebounds. Ty Lawson contributed 24 points on 9-17 shooting and Coby Karl added 19 points and went 4-7 from downtown, while also hitting the two game winning free throws for the Nuggets.

Sonny Weems was doing a little bit of everything. In the highlights you'll see a nice alley-oop pass he makes, a pretty three-pointer, as well as a nice blocked shot and beautiful breakaway dunk on the other end of the floor. Weems, as George Karl pointed out, needed to have a stellar five games in Las Vegas and from what I've read ... he didn't totally make the best of his trip as his game was said to be a touch rusty. It's difficult to judge a guy from his summer league and with Weems the jury is still out ... actual NBA games are a different beast.

Ty Lawson is as quick as advertised and it looks like he's having a bit more success with his shot. Lawson makes a pretty three pointer in the video as well as connecting on a circus-layup after being knocked to the floor. They say that speed never has a bad day, and Lawson will surely be the beneficiary of his wheels. We haven't really had a rookie to get excited about in Denver since Carmelo Anthony fell into the team's lap back in 2003-04. Pretty much the one thing I wanted Denver to get this offseason was a lightening quick point guard who can change the makeup of the team when he's on the floor and I still have high hopes that Lawson is the answer. Oh, and he can indeed dunk! (fast forward to the 38 second mark of the linked video)

As Jeremy over at Roundball Mining Company pointed out the other day on his blog ... Coby Karl indeed should be able to find a roster spot in the NBA this season. I'm not going to say he'll get one, but I've been impressed with his game. Karl has a beautiful alley-oop pass in the highlights and he is the type of player that while he may not wow you, surely can get the job done on the floor. Every team needs a shooter off the bench, even if he's the 12th man, and Karl can provide that and a bit more. If his shooting continues to improve I'd say Coby will find a home somewhere in the league.

I did have some hopes that Denver was going to find a big man off this summer league roster ... perhaps in the form of Richard Hendrix (averaging 7.8 points and 4.3 rebounds in just 15 minutes per game), but I don't know if that's going to be true. I'm interested to know if 6'11'' and 240 pound C.J. Giles will get a invite to training camp. Giles averaged 7.2 points and 7 rebounds in 22.4 minutes in Vegas, including 13 points and 10 rebounds in 35 minutes of action against the Hornets.

It almost would have been nice to have Johan Petro under contract and on the floor this summer to see if he could dominate at all. The three guys mentioned above have been the talk of the Nuggets' summer team, but none of those guys are big men. It looks to me like Denver will have to look elsewhere for that fourth big ... perhaps by bringing Petro back. Like I broke down a few weeks ago, the Nuggets don't really have a lot of playing time to offer a fourth big, so a big name guy is probably not going to be an answer.

Denver finished 4-1 in Vegas.

It was fun to get a peek at some of the younger guys and we'll find out which guys will be getting invites to training camp soon. To have just a taste of basketball was nice, but now I find myself wanting more ...

I think we should bring Petro back for insurance as our 4th big man, and maybe sign Hendrix, or Simmons out of the Summer League team granted they won’t play much, those 2 are big bodies that may come in handy.

Speedy Point Guards

Seems like trying to find a speedy PG this year wasn’t that hard. Ty Lawson, Johnny Flynn, Rodrigue Beaubois, Darren Collison, and Brandon Jennings all seem to be speedster point guards with wheels, who were all pretty successful in the summer league. I would say Tyreke Evans also played well, but I wouldn’t call him a speedster, but rather an athletic body. Overall, this summer league seemed to be guard heavy

How about Cedric Simmons?

I know Simmons has bounced around a lot in his first few years in the league, but if I’m not mistaken, he was a lottery pick just 4 or 5 years ago? Shouldn’t he have some untapped potential? Maybe the Nuggets could offer him a veteran’s minimum and see if he taps that potential at all?

Simmons ...

Here is a link to his summer league stats … click here.

He averaged 18.8 minutes per game with 7.4 points and 6.6 rebounds. Simmons is listed at 6’9’’ and 235 lbs. Definitely not the biggest guy around and one that has never reached his potential. He shot 44% from the field in 5 games.

Man he looked a lot bigger than 6’9 and 235. Hmm…that’s disheartening. I agree, I think the Nuggets are going to need a bigger body than that. Drew Gooden is still out there…. though I suppose he wants more than the Nuggets could give. Tskitishvilli is up to 270 pounds supposedly? I know everyone hates that guy, but maybe he’d be a serviceable back up big man.

Skita isn't really the type of Big Man Denver needs.

He plays like a shooting guard or small forward and I think he may get a shot with the Knicks as D’Antoni has always been infatuated with Skita.

I agree with that...

The Nuggets need someone who can rebound like a beast. Though i’ve always liked the idea of having a big who could shoot the long ball to play the hi-lo with nene and/or melo. Melo draws the double team and kicks it out to a big who consistently knocks down a long ball.

I do recall reading this past weekend on hoopshype that Skita was up to 270 but I can’t find it anywhere :(

Big Men

I suppose we do need more of a backup center thats a 7 footer, but having Simmons, or Hendrix on the roster wouldn’t hurt. Simmons, Hendrix, and Johan Petro are all around 23 years old I believe, and may still have untapped potential that we may get out of them.

Melo was drafted in 03

So that would be the moment he fell into our laps.

As for Summer League play. I’m not sold on Coby Karl even though he played well. I like him a lot as a player, but I don’t know if I like the idea of him playing along side his dad. I was thinking, maybe we could package him and Weems in a deal for a decent big.

by GoldenNugget on Jul 20, 2009 5:54 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Well true ... Melo was drafted in June of 2003 for the 2003-04 season.

Well the Nuggets would have to sign Coby first. I’m not totally sold on the guy either, but I’m guessing he could take the notorious Paul Shirley in a game of one-on-one?

I don’t know if the younger Karl yet has a roster spot in the NBA, but his play should earn him a camp invite somewhere … not saying that it’ll earn him a spot in Denver’s training camp though. I also don’t think that Karl has any trade value in the league right now … especially not when any team is free to sign him to the minimum at the moment.

Deandre Jordan

I still find him an intriguing player that has a lot of potential that is similar to a dwight howard…don’t think he’ll be that good, but can’t we package Petro, Weems, and Shape for him?

by bodmiesta on Jul 20, 2009 8:12 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

The salaries don’t exactly matchup, but i’m sure throwing in a player here or there can make a similar deal work

by bodmiesta on Jul 20, 2009 8:13 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

but why would the clippers take on a project in Petro when Jordan is already one? and why would they take Weems when they have Eric Gordan? It’d be a nice deal don’t get me wrong, I just don’t see the clippers doing it even if there aren’t any minutes for Jordan on that team

by NugNugz on Jul 21, 2009 8:31 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

who’s there backup shooting guard and small forward? they just traded away quentin richardson, so weems, and maybe sharpe (probably not), can play the backup shooting guard, and small forward positions. They don’t really need Jordan that much anyways, they have Chris Kamen, Marcus Camby, and Blake Griffen down in the post already.

As soon as something official comes out ... I'll be delving into it!

Right now it’s just internet buzz without all the details in place.

Backup SF – Ricky Davis and Craig Smith can play there some too
Backup SG – Mardy Collins and Ricky Davis

Yuck Malik Allen!

That guy is only in the league because Scott Skiles likes him for some odd reason – I hope this rumor is false :(

Which NBA Team Has the Best Center-Power Forward Rotation in the League?

THE STIFF LIST (as of 2/7 by Andrew)

STIFF #1: THE FUTURE OF THE NBPA
If the NBA owners opening proposal for the new collective bargaining agreement is any indication, we're heading for a lockout in 2011 and after that, smaller contracts, smaller salaries and less revenue shared with the players.

STIFF #2: THE CLIPPERS
After correctly kicking Mike Dunleavy upstairs and rightly installing Kim Hughes as head coach, why are rumors of Isiah Thomas joining the Clips circling around already?

STIFF #3: THE EASTERN CONFERENCE
Rumors of the re-birth of the Eastern Conference have been greatly exaggerated.  Yes, the Cavaliers are awesome but the sixth playoff seed might be sub-.500.  And do you think any of the West's top six teams fear the Celtics, Magic or Hawks?  No chance.

STIFF #4: ANKLE INJURIES
First Carmelo Anthony.  Then Chauncey Billups. And now possibly Arron Afflalo?  Tape those ankles up, dammit!

STIFF #5: NEW JERSEY NETS
4-46 and losers to the lowly Pistons on Saturday night.  But Lawrence Frank was the problem, right?
