Nuggets trade up to 18 and get Ty Lawson from UNC

I'm very happy with this trade and taking Lawson! Full write up coming tomorrow.

For now ... check out Lawson's interview from the combine.

The Denver Post has some stats on Lawson from his days at UNC click here.

I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend reading this interview that Ben from Blazers Edge did with Ty Lawson and published on June 23rd. THE TY LAWSON REPORT

Fantastic move

Who nows how Ty will work out in the NBA. If he doesn’t succeed it won’t be for a lack of trying. He seems like a perfect fit for the Nugs up-tempo game; great speed and a decent outside game.

Nate- do you think AC is the odd man out now? I believe Jones is an UFA, correct?

Yes...

AC is out. Mark my words. I love this move.

Propheteer ...

I believe the Nuggets will attempt to bring AC back next season.

I’m not sure if anthony will want to sign a one year deal or not though and that’s all I see Denver offering him at this point in his tenure. I think it’ll be up to him as I think Denver will offer him a deal.

He's a 10 year vet

Meaning it’s going to cost the Nuggets $1.3 mil or so to sign him to a third one year minimum deal in a row. That means we would paying more than we did for the last 2 years while getting a lot less on the court now that Lawson is locked up for a while. Financially, it makes very little sense

But it wouldn't surprise me

To see Denver doing this anyways, since AC is probably not getting more than the minimum anywhere else. Also, GK said he wants AC back in this article

Yes, I think we all know that GK is comfortable with Carter and Carter is obviously familiar with the team and offense.

I think to hand the backup duties to Lawson right away is probably a little too much to ask right now … especially from a GK rookie.

Carter made $1.1 million last season, but his cap number only counted for somewhere around $700,000+ for some reason. Crazy cap rules … I don’t get them all. But I hear you on him getting a raise and a raise on the cap number (which is huge.)

This very well could be the end of AC’s reign as Denver’s backup PG, but I’ll be surprised.

AC

was pretty awful offensively in the playoffs. I can’t imagine Lawson being much worse even as a rookie.

Brilliant.

Great use of the protected future pick. We stuck it to the Hornets and the Jazz who both wanted to draft a PG. The only possible downside I see to this is we are stuck with Steven Hunter’s expiring for a little while longer.

Hunter's deal will get traded at some point.

Could not be happier!

Lawson has been my favourite college player the past few years, and I could not be happier with him joining the Nuggets.

I think he’s exactly what they need, and will have an above-average NBA career — be it with the Nuggets or elsewhere after a few seasons.

I just hope I’m not wrong…

Words from Chapman, Karl, Lawson & Warkentien

In case some didn’t see this…

"My hope is that we can get A.C. back and Chauncey and have Ty as a guy who will work hard and prove that he’s got to play sometime," Karl said. "He’s a great talent. Over the last four or five years, I’ve become more and more impressed by little guards because you just can’t cover em. It’s hard to cover ‘em. From what I’ve been evaluating and seeing is you’ve got one of those guys who’s very difficult to cover."

Great move

Made even better by the fact that the Charlotte pick is protected against being in the top 12 next year. I think Lawson is just what this team needed. And I’m amazed he fell to 18 in a pretty weak draft.

Lawson himself thought he'd go 5-14 range and he certainly believed he'd go ahead of his teammate Tyler Hansbrough ...

But I agree with the Charlotte pick … I think it winds up being in the 14-21 range next season as the Bobcats will have a surprisingly decent season and make the “oh so great” pick really just another late round pick in a crap shoot draft.

Anytime your team gets a player that they give up a nice asset to get you should be excited. Especially since the Nuggets front office has been making some really nice moves over the past couple of years. These guys seem to get it and know what they are doing.

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
