KMart not near suspension after all

Just cruising the blogosphere and came across this story from Andrew over at Denver Stiffs.

According to a Marc Stein's (here) ESPN article Martin has had three of his technicals rescinded so last night's technical was actually just his third and not his sixth. This is great news as KMart was facing a mandatory one-game suspension if he reached seven techs.

Denver's Kenyon Martin has also been hit with five technicals this postseason, but his past three technicals were rescinded by the league, putting Martin officially at two. Two of Martin's technicals in Denver's second-round series with Dallas were wiped away -- one of them when a Game 1 hit on Dirk Nowitzki was upgraded from a technical foul to a flagrant foul. Also, double technicals Martin and L.A.'s Pau Gasol were assessed in Game 2 were rescinded.

So the league offices can see how unfair refs are to K-Mart

When are they going to do something about the actual game officials?

Wow

Talk about lucking out, that is huge.

I’m not sure how we managed such a stroke of good fortune from the league, but that is a huge deal. Now, Kenyon will probably not cost the Nuggets a critical game with his absence due to a technical suspension. There are still quite a few games remaining but man…losing Kenyon would have hurt, bad.

So happy for this.

I think the league went back and saw that a couple of those techs were absolutely terrible ...

And the tech he got upgraded to a flagrant … sort of works out I guess.

Losing Kenyon would make for winning a game very very difficult.

Wow

Nate pretty soon we’re going to need an extra category in the box score to update foul calls lol.

*Jones awarded flagrant 1 foul for tripping
*Martin technical recinded
*Bynum flagrant changed to personal

It is good news though, win or lose it’s better if both teams have all their players. The only exception to that I believe may be Jones.

The NBA needs to chill

And recognize that the playoffs require you to be more lenient on Ts. That Flagrant last night was BS…

So, is there some sort of link?

where you can go to look at all of the players remaining in the playoffs and see their technical foul totals and flagrant point totals to see who is in danger of being suspended? Especially since they seem to change half of the calls made during the games.

Phew!

Thanks for the news. I was honestly really worried about this, considering how liberal they’ve been with the techs (on both teams). If they’re going to hold to the 7 techs means a one-game suspension, it’s good that they review all of them to make sure they were warranted.

Dahntay may be suspended

Upon league review of his trip. Fuck.

Oh well, I guess that means that JR will get more burn, at least.

Surely, you can’t be serious?

Wait, how does that mean he's suspended?

A flagrant 1 by itself isn’t an automatic suspension. You have to have a certain number of points or something.

by holly96 on May 26, 2009 3:12 PM MDT up reply actions

He's not, see below...

But this proves that the NBA needs to reassess its system for flagrants, its BS…

No he's not

He has 3 flagrant points now, one more and a suspension but not yet…

That's what I mean. He has 3, Benjamin Hochman's twitter account is saying that

The league is going to upgrade Dahntay’s trip to a F1, which would put him at four.

by Colin Neilson on May 26, 2009 3:13 PM MDT up reply actions

So, is that the final verdict?

He now has 3 points, one more flagrant one and he sits a game? Also, how on earth can the league justify giving him a flagrant one for the push to Kobe’s back and back away Bynum’s two-handed chop to the Bird that grazed his face last night? Unbelievable. Lesson learned, if you’re going to foul someone hard, just make sure it isn’t Kobe. This is BS.

it's about intent, whether it was necessary, and end result

while an “unnecessary” foul does not constitute a flagrant foul, it does if it was deemed both intentional, and could have or did result in injury. Both of Jone’s flagrant fouls (the push and the trip) could have injured Kobe. Had it been anyone else on the push other than Kobe or Lebron (for example, Wade), they would have crashed to the ground, and Jones would have been lucky to get out of the game with only a flagrant 1.

Bynum’s karate chop to Anderson’s arms, while unnecessary, is a typical play made across the NBA when beaten, and attempting to stop the player from scoring and forcing them to make the shot from the line.

Real verdict

Not another lame attempt at humor. From this ESPN article (not another Rick Roll, I promise, btw has anyone else ever encountered a real nasty one out there that takes over your machine?), it appears Dahntay does have 3 points total now (3 flagrant ones, including the two from this series that have been upgraded) and is still one point away from a suspension.

The article also has more info about other flagrants and technical foul status for some players.

Hey, my lame attempt at humor was deleted too? Was it the Rick Roll or the lame satire?

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
