KMart responds to Kings co-owner

Update on Martin apology:

Kenyon Martin will not be apologizing to the Kings co-owner Joe Maloof.

Martin had this to say about the apology he gave to Spencer Hawes and to Maloof:

"Apologize to him? I'm not apologizing to him. I apologized to Spencer after the game, but before (Maloof) opens his mouth he needs to know what's going on," Martin said.

The Sacramento Bee reported Wednesday that Maloof called Martin's actions "thuggery" and said Martin "needs to apologize to Spencer and our organization."

"I'm not apologizing to him whatsoever. I don't owe him or the Sacramento Kings an apology," Martin said. "I apologized to the person I needed to apologize to when I saw him when I was leaving the game."

Martin added a dig at Maloof, whose team finished with the worst record in the NBA this season at 17-65.

"If you don't know the circumstances -- he wasn't there, he wasn't in Denver -- then he should worry about his team getting better and getting out of last place," Martin said.

Star-divide

First it was Mark Cuban ... now the Kings co-owner calls Martin out for "thuggery."

Joe Maloof is demanding an apology from Kenyon Martin for his called flagrant foul on Spencer Hawes. The play Maloof is referring to occurred at the 5:43 mark of the 1st Quarter in the Kings games Monday night.

Hawes was sprinting up the floor on a fast break and as he was flying down the lane he received a pass and was going up for the dunk. Martin pushed Hawes with one hand in the armpit area and it was enough to send an off-balance and in-flight Hawes crashing to the ground under the basket.

While Maloof is calling the play "thuggery" I just don't see it that way. The play was moving at a fast pace and Hawes was in a dead sprint ... Martin, like he's been doing for the past few games ... instead of moving his feet, just reached out and pushed Hawes.

I don't think Kenyon meant to injure the guy or had any premeditation on the play. I believe it just happened quickly and was unfortunate in how Hawes landed.

Martin was correctly called for a flagrant type 1 foul on the play and if you watched basketball in the early 1990's then you know for a fact that fouls like this, actually fouls harder than this, happened all the time and nobody was called for a flagrant.

No longer can you give a guy a hard foul to send a message in the League (though I don't believe this was Martin's intent). Players today run the lane fearlessly and get great protection from the officials.

It was very unfortunate that Hawes was hurt on the play, though thankfully nothing serious.

And if Maloof wants an apology then I think Nene deserves one for the way Ike Diogu threw his elbow into Nene's face resulting in a chipped tooth. But you don't see Stan Kroenke demanding one. Move on Maloof.

I don't believe a guy with a career littered with leg injuries would ever mean to intentionally injury a player.

I have a solution

K Mart apologizes, and in turn Maloof provides him with 2 nights stay at the beautiful Palms Resort in Las Vegas complete with 2 free buffet vouchers.

Then we call it even.

Oh, and Paris Hilton can “service” Spencer Hawes back to health

Carelessness

…shouldn’t get you off the hook. Being careless can be just as dangerous as being malicious.

How about playing basketball – you know, defending guys – instead of shoving them? If you get beat by your man, you get beat by your man. Take it right back to him on the other end of the floor, and play better defense next time. Don’t be cheap and just shove a guy who is running full speed.

Sorry Nate...

I have to disagree with you on this one. It was a stupid, malicious play by KMart made out of frustration and he full deserved the flagrant, and probably deserved to be tossed. He didn’t even remotely try to make a play on the ball.

If he had jumped into Hawes trying to swipe at the ball, maybe it was different, but he simply placed a hand on him and shoved from the floor without having any intention of going for the ball.

Kenyon is an idiot for that play and he does nothing to help the Nuggets break out of the stereotype of being a “thuggish” team.

I agree.

I was ashamed of that incident. It was clear that K-Mart was humiliated by the way the game was going early on, particularly how well Hawes was playing and he just said “screw this”. It’s an unforunate, albeit small, blemish on our victory

Maybe he didn't me to injure him

But it was an incredibly stupid and dangerous play, that COULD have resulted in serious injury.

It was barely even a foul

I am sorry but did you all even see the play? That was such a soft foul it is a joke. Was not even close to a flagrant foul and everyone (including Grant while calling the game) is over reacting way to much. Yeah Spencer fell to the ground and could have gotten hurt but that was not Kenyon’s falt. He was already out of control. People make a bigger deal out of petty plays by minorities with a bunch of tatoos then when a white player such as Nocioni blatenly gives someone a very hard foul and is praised for it and people (Grant especialy) respond that this is good defense and what the Kings need. It is a shame things are so soft now days. As the writer of the article said in the early 90’s there were many harder fouls that were not even looked at to be flagrant.

+1

Give me a break. What is this the WNBA? I am glad kenyon made a late attempt to stop the easy dunk no matter how he did it. He clearly grabbed Hawes arm and people do that night in night out to stop the easy play. Just so happens Hawes went flying to the ground because he has no balance. After the play you could tell Kmart clearly apologized to hawes as he was checking out hawes slapped kmart on the ass. Maloof should be ashamed for handling this through the media and sounding like a complete baby in the process.

Since when

is it not a flagrant foul when the defender makes zero effort to play the ball, and instead grabs his arm in mid-air mind you, and pulls him downward? K-Mart is a total thug; I can’t wait for his contract to come off the books, and his substandard play off the team.

You must not watch the NBA much.

Because people grab Arms all the time to prevent easy layins. Am i saying Kmart didnt deserve the flagrant? Not at all he got what he deserved. But for Maloofy to go off like that is ridiculous.

I don't watch games?

If you don’t make a play for the ball, or come close for that matter (i.e. Kmart’s foul), and violently hack at the player’s arms/body then it’s a flagrant foul

Oh, I think KMart’s foul clearly falls into these parameters.

Take some time and reread my post.

If you would of read my post , you would of saw I said Kmart deserved the foul he recieved. So what are you arguing? And please this foul was not even close to “violent”. I am sure you didn’t watch the game because it was a simple foul and hawes lost his footing.
Heres a replay you need to watch it:

by CCH on Apr 15, 2009 3:52 PM MDT up reply actions

Agreed CCH.

It should have been called a foul but it wasn’t anything close to malicious.

I really don’t see what Maloof is so upset about…I think it has a lot more to do with a frustrating loss and season and being mad that JR was going for the 3pt record.

I think that accusing KMart of ‘thuggery’ is much more offensive than Kmart’s foul was.

Totally conclusive

You’re right, it wasn’t a flagrant foul. I could tell right away from the great angle, and crystal clear HD Youtube so often supplies.

Yup

And maybe they should make a drama movie in respects to poor Spencer Hawes, they could title it “Dont cry for me , Sacramento”. You should maybe send him some flowers and chocolates to go along with it as well, It makes me tear up knowing he hurt his knee and is only going to make more than all the members of this sites combined posters. Maybe we should put together a Get well card?

Meant to say...

Make more money than all the combined posters in the time he’ll sit out.

by CCH on Apr 15, 2009 4:37 PM MDT up reply actions

What does that say?

When Kmart apologizes to Hawes? Doesn’t that mean he was wrong, and he thought he might have committed a flagrant? I can’t see Kmart as a player who would apologize for something he thought he was right on. Listen, I’m all for tough hard-nosed play, but when a player undercuts (basically what happened) another driving to the basket it can be very dangerous.

Trade

How about the Nugs trade K-Mart to the Kings for a handshake and a smile? Would that satisfy the Maloofs?

I think Maloof should apologize to KMart for looking at him funny.

Who does he think he’s messing with?

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
