No K-Mart, no win... (Nuggets/Bobcats recap)
The Nuggets let one slip away in Charlotte. Without their defensive "quarterback" Kenyon Martin, the Nuggets defense gave up too many second chance points and easy buckets in the lane. Down the road losses like this may catch up with the 16-6 Denver Nuggets.
It would be easy to chalk this loss up to the team being tired and playing the second night of a back-to-back against a well rested home team, but the Nuggets inability to close out quarters, rebound and share the basketball all played a role in tonight's 107-95 loss more so than fatigue.
Last night after the Nuggets game I was able to catch the HBO replay of the middleweight fight between Paul Williams and Sergio Martinez. The fight was basically a slug-fest that came down to the last man standing. After the fight it was anyone's guess as to who the judges would give the fight to, but one thing was for sure ... it was a very close bout. The bloodied and battered Williams (who was knocked down in the first round) waited anxiously, but I felt Martinez would earn the win ... one score came in 114-114, another 115-113 and the final score ... 119-110 in favor of Williams. How was Williams able to steal such a close looking fight? Well, he did all the little things that boxing judges tend to like ... he was aggressive forcing the action and always came back after a flurry by Martinez. The Bobcats basically did the same thing to the Nuggets ... each time Denver made a run and tried to take control of the game Charlotte would answer right back and was the aggressor tonight.
The Bobcats utilized another boxing trick against the Nuggets as they were able to "steal rounds" or in basketball terms ... they finished quarters extremely well. In the first quarter Denver made a nice run to get back into the game, but Charlotte at the 1:58 mark with a 22-21 lead went on a 7-5 run to finish the quarter up 29-26.
In the second quarter at the 2:03 mark Denver was up 49-43, but gave up a 11-0 run before the half and Charlotte went into the locker room up 54-49.
In the third quarter at the 4:24 mark Denver was up 65-61, but gave up a 17-10 run and Charlotte was up 78-75 heading into the fourth.
In the fourth quarter at "winning time" at the 5:56 mark and the score tied 87-87 the Bobcats finished the game with a 20-8 run and finished off the Nuggets.
So, Charlotte utilized four runs to end each quarter and outscored Denver in the above mentioned paragraphs 55-23 ... ouch. I think I may have mentioned it in a recap before, but I believe that Pepto Bismol may have had a hidden sponsorship in tonight's contest ... upset stomach ... diarrhea.
Another area in which Denver shit the bed tonight ... rebounding. The Nuggets missed the roughly 8 rebounds per game that the athletic Kenyon Martin provides. Gerald Wallace terrorized the Nuggets on the glass, he grabbed game high 16 boards (5 offensive) and just seemed to want the ball more than anyone else on the floor. Wallace got to a lot of misses that Martin can usually corral ... ones high above the crowd. Martin's replacements Renaldo Balkman and Joey Graham were able to replace 6 rebounds for the Nuggets tonight, but Charlotte outrebounded Denver 43-35.
On the offensive boards the Bobcats were able to get to 33% of the missed shots on the Nuggets end by grabbing 14 of the possible 42 boards on the Nuggets end. As much as I hate to second guess rotations, I almost wanted to see Johan Petro get a little burn because I think his size would have been a different matchup than going small and trying to let Balkman and Graham go up against the athletic Wallace (on the glass anyway). But I'm sure that Petro would not have made the difference ... but like in the NFL, you always want the backup QB if your starter is struggling ... that is until the backup actually comes in.
Now to the area of the game that I like to focus on ... sharing the ball. The Nuggets recorded just 11 team assists tonight. Denver did not do a good job of getting each other the ball. J.R. Smith led the team with 4 assists as Billups, Lawson, Melo, Afflalo and Graham combined for the other seven. Those are horrific numbers for an NBA team that plays its best basketball when they are sharing the ball and getting out in transition.
I'm still not totally sure why when the Nuggets face good defensive teams and are unable to hit their usual shots that they seem to revert to one-on-one basketball, but they do and it rarely results in wins. The 2-16 performance from beyond the arc didn't help either. I also think both teams may have combined for well over 600 missed shots in the paint tonight.
Denver in their six losses now has stinkbombs to three teams that were under .500 at the time they played them (and one to a team that is now under .500 in the Bucks). The Nuggets now head to Detroit for a game on Thursday with the retooled Pistons ... a place that Denver has had a lot of trouble winning.
Another one gets away and Denver is now 0-2 when K-Mart is unable to play.
Views you can use:
- George Karl is now 20-19 versus Larry Brown.
- Joey Graham had a nice third quarter going 3-4 from the field in the period. Graham was 3-3 in the third and then decided to take a "heat check" shot from the corner. Here is what I wrote when he took that fourth shot, "The heat check is the dumbest shot in basketball. You're telling me that after working hard to get open three times that it's a good idea to chuck up an off balance, rushed and contested shot? Why would that ever work? The "heat check" should be called "the cooler.""
- Nene can't have offensive games like he did tonight ... he finished 3-6 for 8 points, but basically owned Tyson Chandler whenever he got the ball. When the Nuggets don't work Nene into the offense the entire team struggles.
- Bennett Salvatore is a shitty ref. Check this picture out. At the 2:15 mark of the fourth quarter the score was 95-91 Bobcats ... Melo set up position on the top of the block with Stephen Jackson trying to front him, as Billups was making a move to the baseline (using Melo as a shield), Jackson did his best Manu Ginobili and flooped to the floor (pretending Melo's left arm chopped him in the throat ... Salvatore (on the baseline behind Melo) bought the play hook, line and sinker for Jackson and called an offensive foul on Melo. So, instead of Billups driving to the hoop basically alone and maybe cutting the lead to 2 ... Charlotte takes over and pushes the lead to 97-91. I'm not saying that play changed the game, but it is just funny that refs get suckered into these plays on a nightly basis. What could have been an exciting ending in Charlotte instead turned into another boring ending in the NBA. Oh and Salvatore got a little more involved in the game after that by calling technicals on both Melo and Billups. Melo's came because Stephen Jackson drove and spun right into Melo and threw up a wild off balance shot ... Salvatore gave Jackson the bailout call and set Melo off. I know the Nuggets get their share of calls, but with all the ref scrutiny opened up by Tim Donaghy ... we are all watching with more of a mindful eye.

Make it 0-3
if you count the game in which K-mart went out early against the heat. You wouldn’t think that he is that important, but our defensive intensity is just that much better when he is out there. Let’s hope he’s back soon.
Unacceptable
The clippers, the T-wolves, and now the Bobcats? With or without Kenyon, the Nuggets are way too good to be losing games like these. I blame Karl.
you are
retarded. Karl wants the team to pass the ball, but that just did not happen tonight.
god i hate all these wannabe’s and karl haters
Where's your logic?
I’m sorry, but I have never heard of a coach that “wants” his team to do something, yet they simply refuse to listen to him. If Karl truley “wants” his team to do something, then he needs to MAKE them do it!!! None of this bs, I “want” them to play a certain way, or I “wish” they would just do this. No, as coach of an NBA team you MAKE your players do what you want, and there are no excuses.
"Nuggets Fan" - Wrong
I agree GoldenNugget. I am not a Karl Hater, but I still believe that Chauncey’s coaching has improved Karl’s "coaching." However, Chauncey can’t sub players and do other things a real coach must do.
Karl lets players WALK back on defense while shots go up. He lets his players NOT crash the boards on the offensive end. (As far as I am concerned, you need 3 players crashing at all times, 2 go back on D – The Nugs almost never do this) If they are too tired to go to the offensive boards every time, then sub more often for shorter periods. Melo needs 2 minutes to rest, not over 6 minutes at a time. He lets Birdman walk after the ball twice when the ball goes through the hoop with under 2:00 minutes remaining. (clock running) He lets his players be selfish. He lets his players argue with the refs until the refs can’t take it anymore. He lets the Bobcats go on runs without stopping their momentum with a timeout. All of this can be easily solved by holding players accountable. If they can’t do what you ask, take them out of the game- explain this to them, and then put them back in. Players must respect their coach. As a coach, you can’t "want" your players to do something, they must do what you say or you are not a good coach.
I am sick of people saying that Karl has improved. Maybe a little, but not enough to overtake the Lakers. Chauncey is coaching this team. We need a better coach if we want to overtake the Lakers.
Go Nuggets!
Karl Hater here
You can put me on the list.
Your point about Chauncey is a good one. The announcers last night talked about the first timeout after the 9-0 run to start the game. They said Chauncey was the one talking and coaching during that TO, not Karl, and they went on a run of their own after the TO.
I think this loss was more about injuries than coaching or anything else. Obviously the loss of Kmart was huge. The less commented on injury is to Birdman. He was clearly limping around and hobbled. The Bobcats simply ran his man off a pick and roll, then isolated and went by him at will yesterday. Birdman was simply too hobbled to be effective, and they had no choice but to play him big minutes. That said, the coach should have changed how they were defending pick and rolls so they couldn’t so easily isolate Birdman on a smaller, faster player.
No wanna be here
Karl is the only one to make happen what he wants done.
karl cannot get it done
i like the man personally, but let’s face it: all Karl has ever been is a PRETTY GOOD coach. To beat the Lakers and take the NBA Finals, you need a GREAT coach. Karl will never be GREAT.
So not having your 2nd best player does have an effect on the outcome?
sorry to hop on over and talk a little friendly trash, but if I remember correctly, missing Gasol was a non-factor in the Denver crushing of the Lakers according to many Nuggs fans. So why is missing Kenyon Martin now an acceptable place to put the blame?
And, Nate, I know you didn’t blame fatigue from the back-to-back but some gamethread commenters had no problems factoring it in.
I will just say that in both cases, our loss to you, and your loss to Charlotte, the losing team just played poorly for a variety of reasons. How it all shakes out at the end of the year come playoffs will be the deciding factor in Lakers vs. Nuggets this season. In the meantime, best of luck to you guys, and stay healthy!
As a Lakers fan, it seems mighty unwise of you to cherry-pick certain viewpoints from a fan base and use those to back an argument. The Lakers’ fan base is pretty much built upon the retarded majority, where there will be an endless supply of source material to assume applies to all fans of the purple and gold.
really?
retarded majority? It’s basketball, not war, relax.
Billy Mac: "Lamar, can you see yourself actually getting in the (boxing) ring"?
Lamar Odom: "No. My face is too pretty."
I was told
To be nice to you the next time you came back…and I’m actually going to.
We as nuggets nation seem to freak out everytime we lose a game…therefore our responses to outside posters is going to be volitile…we lost to another sub-.500 team and it sucks. We’re 16-6…pretty good if you ask me.
We aren’t the Lakers. There is NO WAY that we are going to be considered the ULTIMATE FAVORITE, and it’s ridiculous to think otherwise. Detroit, San Antonio and maybe Miami are the only small market teams that have beaten the odds…

thanks for being nice.
and yes 16-6 is pretty good. Very good actually.
Billy Mac: "Lamar, can you see yourself actually getting in the (boxing) ring"?
Lamar Odom: "No. My face is too pretty."
Well obviously entire fanbases don’t fall under one single streotype, it’s just that if you’ve ever been around any public commenting system like (god forbid) the espn.com commenting pages, the number of asinine and ridiculous comments from Lakers fans is through the roof. My point is basically that if Lakers and Nuggs fans were to have a trash-talkin back and forth where we mock the claims of fans of the other team, we basically have an endless amount of comments to choose from.
I am sure you get tons of rude comments from Laker fans.
There are simply more of us than most (probably all) teams. That doesn’t mean the percentage is any higher though. Either way I just don’t think it is an excuse to call anyone a “retard”.
Billy Mac: "Lamar, can you see yourself actually getting in the (boxing) ring"?
Lamar Odom: "No. My face is too pretty."
No one said missing Gasol was not a factor, in fact it was readily considered a factor.

payroll
How many more millions of dollars is the Lakers’ payroll this year than the Nuggets’? I figure if you’re spending as big as the Lakers are, then yeah, you can make do without one of your key players more easily than other teams.

The View I Will Use
Karl being 20-19 against Larry Brown. What I saw, was 2 teams with a lot of equality (not neccisarily in terms of talent) yet one was much better coached. The Cats tonight were more disciplined, worked harder and most importantly, played team ball. Thats the thing that I think kills us quite often. We have so many ego’s and star players on this team who all want the ball, that sharing becomes a scarcity because everyone wants to “get his”. Still, it’s Karl’s job to adress this issued MID-GAME, not wait till the press confrence. It’s just as though he is inept when it comes to making in-game adjustments. It’s his job to recognize and stop the runs that the Cats made before all the quarters ended by calling time outs, and it’s his job to design plays to make things easier on his players on the offensive end of the floor so they arnt’ always going one on one. I hate losing to teams like we have this year, but at the same time I would rather us be able to beat the great teams in the league than just beat up on all the sub .500 teams to achieve a great record. I’m still happy with the way the season is going for the most part, but these types of loses are going to really bite us in the ass come April/May when the playoff seedings start to take shape. Plus, Utah has been playing really good lately, gotta watch out for them!
I agree with everything you said
1 Nene does need to get the ball more. And we need to stop playing 2 on 2 with Melo and Chauncey and move the ball get open looks, easy dunks.
2 What the hell was Salvatore thinking with the flop man. Melo barely moved. Then yea the bailout call, man was i furious. We attack the rim the whole game for the past 2 games and get hardly any fouls called. And you give them the bailout call right after the flop. Thats a no dice situation in this NBA and complete horseshit (wheres my fuckin make up call). I am watching and its hard for the Nuggets to win a basketball game when Bavetta or Salvatore are officiating. There was also no reason to give Melo a technical that late in a game. Players have been talking all damn game, dont basically end the game by assessing a tech with one minute left. Thats fuckin bush league shit.
3. I hate the refs and there is a bias among the leagues elite. Last time I checked Melo was in this elite group. However David Stern or the Leagues officiating crew must have not got the memo. They also whistled him for a garbage 4th foul after they missed the foul on Chauncey. Yea I thought the refs sucked tonight. But we had our chances and we missed shots. The refs didnt miss those shots. So its one game but I fear we are in for a 2nd seed because the Lakers have 3 less losses than us, and thats all that matters right now, well besides beating Detroit.
Plain & Simple
Denver should have won, no excuses. Nuggets are part time winners. That’s what we have – part time winners.
Plain and simple
This ridiculous standard of winnng EVERY SINGLE GAME and not allowing the fact that at 16-6 we’re all jumping ship is fucking stupid. What loss are you going EXCUSE? what loss is okay for us to lose? Seriously? I wanna know what team that it would okay to lose to? And don’t give me this shit of, “it’s not about the loss it’s the way we executed”
if you ACTUALLY think that these guys are ok with losing, then maybe you should re-evaluate how much you know about this game…

While I am mildly concerned that we’re reverting to the pre-CB Nuggets (beating the elite, but losing to the losers), we’re off to a great start at 16-6. If we start dropping multiple games in a row rather than bouncing back as we have, I’ll be more concerned, but going 83-0 was never possible and neither is winning every game. I acknowledge there are chinks in the armor, but this was the 2nd of back-to-backs and K-Mart was out. It’s a long season and it will all come together, you’ll see.

Not having Kmart is terrible for this team. As we saw last year and now this year, the dude is vital to the team winning. I wonder if he is the one that gets on Melo’s case when he won’t pass the ball?
The Nugs record last year without Melo was way better than without Kmart. Now that people are paying attention maybe we can see the man get some of the praise he deserves. No more hate please. 3 games not enough sampling? Go look at the Nugs record without Kmart last year. You want my vote for the Nugs MVP? I’ll give it to Kmart closely followed by Billups. Love Melo but the dude just doesn’t seem to get it that his ball stopping offensive game doesn’t work. If he scores 25 and shoots 20 times the Nugs will win every game. He shoots over 25 time and the Nugs drop to a sub .500 team in my opinion.
It is how we lose
A hard fought down to the wire loss is one thing and someone always comes up short. A kicked back no passing and overall poor jump shot and not finishing performance is another thing. Look back at GK’s tirade about the team after the T-wolves loss. And what did the Nuggets do post GK meltdown ? They kicked some ass. Problem I see and have over the years is the INTENSITY to win. Yeah the Nuggets are not OK with losing. But all wins come by playing hard and not just handed to you. And the Technical meltdowns. Cmon Look at the lineup. Every game is a win or a loss. If a loss happens, don’t let it be against a crummy team and just expecting a win.
denver was beat at their own game
because of the background of coach brown and karl in many ways the 2 teams are a mirror image of each other. add to the fact chauncey played for larry brown there should never had been any surprises. rebounding- the general formula i use is 10 rebounds from the guards, 20 rebounds from the center-power forward and the rest from the small forward. denver’s guards had a total of 4, 2 each from earl and afflalo. it is a major contrast from the sixers game where cb had 7 and ty had 6. bobcat guards totaled 9 boards. nene and andersen had 18 between them. nene had his classic great start with 7 rebounds then had 1 rebound in each of the three remaining quarters. gerald wallace at 6’7" shows the real key to rebounding is working for position and constant effort. graham, balkman and melo combined for 13 rebounds. denver has a realistic chance of going to the nba finals. one of the keys for that to happen is all the players, at all positions must rebound all the time. free throws is normally where denver gets to the line more than the other team. the amount of times denver goes to the line is another indication of how well they execute the half court offense along with assists. 3 point shooting 2 makes for 16 attempts. the 16 attempts is the max shots for denver to take in any one game. the 2 makes is more of a reflection of not getting the 3 point shot in the context of the half court offense. kmart not playing can turn out to be a blessing in disguise. the rotation is now forced to expand to include a greater number of players. nuggets need to execute in the half court offense and manage the 24 second shot clock from the very beginning of the game. the past 3 games show a pattern of a lack of discipline in the first 3 quarters. the result is a very exciting 4th quarter for the fans but places the team in a very compromising position. the broncos had a 4 game losing streak. a players only meeting took place. the nuggets do not need to have a players only meeting at this time. this loss is not about referees or coaches. it is up to the players to cut the crap and make the most of their opportunities.
pick up a calf every day pretty soon you will be picking up a cow
Gerald Wallace should teach the Nuggets how to rebound
At 6 foot 7 and built like a guard (not built like fat man round mound of rebound Barkley who was 6 foot 6) Gerald Wallace is the leading rebounder in the league. Now that’s impressive! I wish that Melo would play with the same heart as Gerald “Crash” Wallace, one of my favorite players of all time. Melo get 6 turnovers and I could tell that he cares a great deal about becoming scoring champion, maybe more than the team winning. Get back to passing, Melo!
Outworked at every position
I’m with this team, we are okay after this loss but it doesn’t make me feel any better about it. Yeah, K-Mart was out, there are excuses for this loss and that’s the problem with this group isn’t it? Melting down at the first sign of adversity is not what i expect out of this team. 4 out of 6 losses to sub .500 teams. That’s garbage no matter who you are. We can;t learn anything from this loss. Everyone was shit. Another game behind the Lakers and one more to make up. K-Mart is NOT an excuse for selfish play. Next game plz
Speaking of K-Mart
The guy who filled in for him (at least in the first quarter) should have seen more time. Balkman is the precise counterpart of Wallace and from what I remember in the 1st, when he actually played, he shut down Wallace on numerous occasions and had many great defense plays that kept us in the game. But, then ol’ George decided he didn’t want to see his face again for the rest of the game and benched him while Wallace went off for 25 and 15. Yet another absolutely BRILLIANT move by GK. But seriously, have you ever heard of a coach who starts a guy, then doesn’t play him the entire rest of the game? Wtf are you trying to do?
GN
Your passion for GK and his BRILLIANT coaching techniques reminds me of self and the Brilliant play of AC.
I share your passion about GK and his inept coaching. (no homo)
The fact that he doesn’t have a clue as to how make players accountable for their failures is and indication that he’s riding on the coat tails of the talent of his teams
Did you read AF’s post of a former player of GK about GK drawing up an inbounds play?
He said GK didn’t have a play. That they were pro’s and to get the ball in.
Without CB1 the Nuggets would be up the creek without a paddle
GK is a dinosaur hanging around padding his stats.
Stay though
Eight man rotation
The rotation should be expanded to ten even eleven. NO AC!
The guard situation is fine. The Nuggets need forwards to play to as much as possible.
why should sub-500 teams scare us stiffs
because 4 0f the 6 losses were to shitty teams and i’m tired of the excuses an elite championship calibur team should’nt make excuses just go out and fucking win. this shit is already getting old. were becoming a laughing stock losing these types of games how is anyone going to take us seriuosly really? don’t tell me i’m overreacting because the losses prove it and i have watched these games and theres no reason to play this piss-poor.
The bobcats have the second best ranked D after the celtics
Their offense is finally coming together. I think that team is very underrated especially with the addition of Stephen Jackson. I don’t think that this is the same category of loss as timberwolves or clippers.
i would agree except
bobcats lost to the nets. denver lost to the t-wolves. this indicates the nuggets play to the level of their competition. there is an old saying- man is a creature of habit. denver has 2 very bad habits that extend to last season. they get off to bad start and or they get a lead and let the opponent back in the game. championship teams are consistent. denver cannot turn it on and off whenever they feel like it and expect to be in the finals.
pick up a calf every day pretty soon you will be picking up a cow

I think that the Bobcats are just getting started. They have a lot of talent, they are well coached and they play in the East. I wouldn’t be surprised if they make the playoffs. Also, don’t forget that they gave NJ their first win of the season and are bitter as Hell about it. Last night had “L” written all over it for us. We shouldn’t be shocked or upset in the slightest…
Practice doesn't make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect.
melo's foul sealed the game
Melo needs to check his ego. His bad ego. The ego that fouls a guy away from the ball at the end of the game and seals the loss for the nuggs. totally unnecessary.
I would rather that the Nuggets
lose to sub .500 teams, than lose to good teams. Because come playoff time we won’t be playing any sub .500 teams. I guess we just have to win enough to get to the playoffs and we’ll be fine…
LOL
thats the way to think about it!! hahaha

Didnt get to watch the game.
Did Joey actually get any on the court time against Stephen (his brother, not Jackson)?
Yeah
He was on him a lot. It was pretty funny. Me and my friends were thinking of the things they would say to each other while standing on the key while dudes take free throws and the best one we came up with was “Hey man, don’t you know mom has been trying to call you. Answer your damn phone.” I guess you had to be there though. As for the play, he blocked Stephen’s shot a few times I think.
Assists
Chauncey = 1 assist
Melo = 2 assists
Nene = 0 assists
Team = 11 total (with 4 from JR)
Not going to win many games when you don’t pass the ball.
That's what I'm talking about
hardly any assist.
Seems like someone said ,“well I didn’t get mine last night, but I’ll get them tonight”.
Isn’t it on GK to make sure the ball gets passed around the horn?
GK needs to post imperatives before each game
“Box out”
“Pass the damn ball”
These are such simple mantras, I don’t understand why he doesn’t hammer on the fundamentals. Maybe he does, but I’m assuming not if these guys can’t remember things as simple as that.

Balkman...WTF?!
I used to be a Balkman fan, but that guy is plain awful. No skills on offense, matador style defense and at 6’8" 200lbs, he gets pushed around inside like a rag doll. Surprised the Nuggets re-signed him at $2.2 million per.
Tommy
The guy hasn’t played in months because of the Brilliant eight man rotation of the Brilliant coach.
I don’t know of any Nugget fan that didn’t see one of our Bigs going down. Kenyon and Nene are suspect all season. Not to give Balkman, Petro and others is stupid on GK for not having insurance per say.
Reasons For Poor Road Play
Lack of Assists and Lack of Ball Movement. Plain and simple. The Nuggs have to learn that they must play better team ball to win on the road. They also don’t seem to have the same energy and hustle on the road as they do at home. Great teams play even harder on the road, and the effort seems to be hit and miss on the road for the Nuggs.
by ACEIII on Dec 9, 2009 9:52 AM MST via mobile reply actions
Call me old fashioned
and I’ve said this repeatedly, but I think the bottom line reason for our play is poor rebounding. When we get offensive rebounds it makes up for poor shooting and ball movement. When we get defensive rebounds it opens us up for fast breaks and ball movement resulting in assists.
I think all of our problems stem from lack of effort on the boards. If I was the coach I’d be riding their asses about this.
Makes complete sense
Better rebounding results in more second chances as well as a decrease in the opponent’s time of possession.
by Artimus Mangilord on Dec 9, 2009 12:04 PM MST up reply actions
I agree with Nate
On offence, Nene looked lazy and tired—seems like their are nights that he simply does not feel like working the paint( what was up with that 3 pt air ball).
Its not rocket science or a coincidence, when the nuggs don’t pass the ball they lose.
Salvatore IS a shitty ref—as long as Iv’e been watching games that he officiates, he blows. Another mark of a bad ref is when the fans start to know your name e.g. salvatore, malloy, tony brothers.
Need another big man
this has been obvious for some time, and remains so. We have two backup PF/Cs that are not NBA caliber players and we need to fix that if we want to make any real noise come playoff time.
The Nuggets were obviously tired last night as evidenced by all the missed layups and no rebounding effort. Melo wasn’t so much becuase he didn’t play so many minutes in Philly.
Nate, I had a similar thought about Petro during the game. There was a point where it was obvious the Nuggets needed some size. I would have gotten Petro off the bench and said to him “I’m putting you in to rebound and play defense. As long as you rebound and defend you’ll stay in, but if you’re not getting the job done you’re coming right back out”. It seems to me that would have been worth the experiement and they really had nothing to lose at that point since what they were doing wasn’t working.
"Woohoo Denver, Yeah... All right Denver justify my love!" ...Homer Simpson
I like it. Totally agree about Petro there and great comment about just telling him to get on the boards or he’s coming out.
It was sort of obvious that Graham (nice offensive third quarter) and Balkman (just rusty) were not getting on the boards like they should have as Wallace’s desire just took over.

coping
I started adjusting my expectations after the Twolves loss and am pleased to report that so far, this loss is not upsetting me very much.
I’ll keep following the Nuggets this season and will always root for them, but it looks pretty certain to me at this point that we’re looking at a season where the Nuggets will be lucky if they make it as far as they did last year.
Who knows, anything can happen, but I no longer have any real hope that the Nuggets can seriously contend for an appearance in the Finals this season.
Come on man! Don't lose hope.
This team has talent pouring out of every position and even on the bench.
The 1996 Broncos crushed the city of Denver after losing to Jacksonville in the playoffs and everybody thought the window for Elway to finally win a Super Bowl was over … snatched up the 1997 and 1998 titles after thinking all lost.
After trading for A.I. this town erupted with support for the Nuggets … things didn’t work out, but Billups brought back hope. The team is 16-6 and they are going to have off nights, but don’t let it sway you. Keep your hopes up and if they get crushed … let them get crushed. Be a fan and get sucked into the team. I’m sucked in and basically lost my mind last night as the game slipped away after being tied at 87-87 … those losses sting, but they happen.
We are used to seeing Denver pull away late in games … they did it all the time last year and did it the first two nights of this roadtrip … hang in there.

Not giving up
Being a Denver sports fan is all about coping. My coping mechanism for the Nuggets is to reduce my expectations as much as I can, without actually abandoning the team entirely.
Boy it was hard to keep expectations in check during the playoffs last year. During the Dallas series my wife said to me “For the first time in all the years I’ve known you, I finally understand why you follow that team. They’re actually making you _happy!”_ So yeah, I was pretty crushed during the next round.
I’m not jumping ship, I’m following them all the way this year no matter how far they go. But my coping mechanism is what works for me. Really, all the discussion here after these bad losses mostly boils down to different people having different ways of coping. It’s hard when you’re investing emotion in something that you don’t have any control over!
I hear ya man.
Good point on the coping mechanism …

That kind of sucks tho
I hate to “reduce my expectations as much as I can.” The problem with me, and most Nuggets fans here is that we see the talent on this team. We watch them destroy New Orleans, and Dallas in the playoffs last year. We watch them dominate the Lakers and San Antonio this season. Performances like those show you the pretty incredible talent this team has when everyone plays to the best of their ability. This team truly SHOULD win every game they play. That’s how good they are. But the problem is that we forget how stinking hard it is to play at 100% every game. In fact, it’s more than hard, it is physically impossible. But that is what we expect, and it’s unfair to the Nuggets.
But all that being said, games like last night are still unacceptable. There are going to be games when we don’t have it. We are going to lose games, and that is inevitable. But what at least I want for this team, is to watch them play hard and fundamentally well every night. You are going to lose to some good teams when they are playing extremely well, and you are having a tough shooting night. But there is no excuse for losses to the Bobcats or the T-wolves. We could shoot 20% and still beat those teams if we just played tough, hard, and fundamentally sound. There is no reason that we can’t do those three things every night. We are good enough to have an off night and still beat 75% of the teams in the league if we do those three things well. Those are what the Lakers and the Celtics do every night. And that’s how they win 65 games. I guarantee that they did not play well in all 65 of their wins, yet they didn’t have to. That is what is frustrating to me. I see that talent level on this team, and I see no reason that we shouldn’t be included among the elite teams in the league. And yet, until we learn to put the same effort into every game, no matter who we are playing, we will never be included with the best.
Right
I agree with your entire second paragraph.
Reducing expectations is a coping mechanism that works for me, but it might not work for everybody. Maybe hang a punching bag in the living room near the TV, and vent the frustration on it when the Nugs have a game like they did last night?

Be elated
According to Karl, going .500 on a road trip makes it “Great”. So at 2-1 so far, the team is already guaranteed a “Great” road trip. At 2-1 you should be super elated, like Karl is. All you have to do is only lose half your games!
Yeah, exactly
That line of thinking he has just pisses me off. “For a 50 win season, all you have to do is win 75% of your home games and 50% of your road games.”
YEAH GUESS WHAT JERK, WE’RE EXPECTING MORE THAN 50 WINS THIS YEAR.

It’s that kind of mentality that seperates us from the Celtics, Lakers, and Orlando. I honestly believe coach Karl believes that and that’s why he said that, and it makes me sick. Here’s the thing though – I think our players attitude can overcome that. I really don’t think we run any plays, the players are in charge of what happens on the court. Even when Karl calls a play my guess is it rarely gets executed. I don’t think the players listen to him, they control their own destiny

There is good news
AC has been riding pine for some time now. That does not suck.

Sad Part
I think it is quite depressing that four out of the six teams we have lost to this season are teams we did not lose to at all last year (Clippers, T’wolves four times in a row, Heat, and the Bobcats). That shows that, so far, in the games that seem like should be won on paper, are getting increasingly difficult due to the lack of heart and hustle we display. It seems like we have to be counted out by everyone, even the fans, to play all out and do the dirty work and win. Also, it seems like George Karl only works hard during games against team that are at the top of the rankings. That is an extremely questionable mentality. Also another tidbit, Nuggets are 5-0 when AC starts, which is disgusting to me. Yuck.
Stop getting worked up over the outcome of something you can't control.

5-1 when A.C. starts ... he started against Miami when Denver lost.

wow... I hope GK doesn't see this.
I honestly don’t think that is relevant, but you know, numbers are numbers
"Do not rest in defense. You can spend 24 seconds in offense on resting. If you do good enough on defense, you will be able to rest on offense."
one of the most concerning stats is
Lawson not having more assists.
seems like at the very beginning of the season, when he was really fighting for the backup pg position, he was throwing assists out to everybody. I hope he hasn’t purple drank the kool-aid in terms of buying into how good he is (even for a rookie) he should really focus on jetting down the court at full speed and then dishing to someone else for a layup/dunk…
though I didn’t get to watch the game and from what I read the team missed a large number of layups which will skew the stats some of course.

I can’t figure Charlotte out. They lost seven in a row to teams like Chicago, Detroit, Philly and Milwaukee and then they turn around and pick up W’s against teams like Cleveland and Denver.

Charlotte Didnt Play Great
If you watched the game, you would have to agree that Charlotte didn’t play great and are a pretty average team. This was the Nuggs game to win, but it was the Nuggs that wilted down the stretch.

Disagree
The stats don’t really show it but Charlotte played extremely well when they needed to. They stopped a few crucial runs, made some really big shots and timed a perfect flop to start the bed-shitting of a referree job that Salvatore dropped in the fourth quarter.
Practice doesn't make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect.

I could see that call for SJAX coming a mile away
He and Wallace were looking for contact all night and Jackson was whining quite a bit, so the call on Melo with about a minute or so left wasn’t unexpected from Salvatore.
