Changing of the guard at the Alamo (Nuggets/Spurs recap)

Kmart_spurs_mediumOn a night where things didn't seem to be going the Nuggets way ... they found the will to pull out a win in San Antonio 106-99.

Star-divide

Beating the Spurs is always special for the Nuggets ... especially when the win comes in Texas, where everything feels just a bit bigger. Melo led the way with 34 points in 42 minutes of play and the Nuggets needed every one of his 14 makes. The game was physical and quick paced and when two good teams meet ... the intensity finds a way to play a big role. Perhaps the biggest role of the night belongs to Ty Lawson as George Karl trusted and played the rookie during the key stretch of the game and Lawson responded with clutch foul shooting, layups and staying with Tony Parker (who terrorized the Nuggets in the paint all night).

When the game got underway I was very surprised at the pace in which the Spurs wanted to play. The quick pace of the game caught me off guard, but San Antonio played well at an accelerated rate and started taking the ball inside and making easy buckets on the Nuggets. As the game wore on I began to wonder why the Spurs, who scored easily inside, started taking three-pointer after three-pointer ... they finished 7-21 on the night from deep.

The Nuggets on the other hand were 4-9 from deep and didn't take a lot threes at they found success taking the ball right into the heart of the San Antonio defense. Denver has the type of team that can get to the rack with regularity and it was very pleasing to see them play to their strength.

Reading SBN's Spurs blog Pounding the Rock earlier in the day it was mentioned that the Spurs would be playing with a sense of urgency because of a tight division race. Denver matched the urgency as they have their own goals in mind (home court in the playoffs). And the Nuggets with the win earn the best start through 20 games in team history.

The Nuggets bench, that features just a typical three player rotation, keyed the win as J.R. Smith and Ty Lawson scored 17 and 11 points respectively. I can't really say enough about Melo's offense tonight ... he was making a variety of shots and found nothing but net on multiple occasions with a hand in his face. Again without Melo's performance Denver does not win this game.

Views you can use:

-Nene played very well against Tim Duncan and took the ball to the rim and finished with either hand going 6-10 from the floor for 12 points. Somehow he didn't get to the foul line ... and he somehow also finished with just 1 rebound.

-The Nuggets won the game despite just 13 team assists.

-Kenyon Martin led the Nuggets with 13 rebounds as the Nuggets won the rebounding battle 38-31.

I enjoyed reading the spurs thread at pound the rock

“They’re getting all the calls!”
and
“They keep stripping the ball”

which goes to show that denver attacked the basket and played good defense.

Last night’s game was one of the worst officiated games we’ve seen this year. They rewarded Ginobli’s flopping, Parker got a call every time he went to the basket if there was a foul or not. Billups just wrapped Parker up on a drive because Billups knew that Parker was going to get a call even if he was ten feet away. Hastings mentioned that the refs should be paying dues to the Parker fan club.

Nene's 1 rebound happened as time expired...

Love the win but somebody better be in Nene’s ear right now about rebounding…

Very nice win

Melo continues to show why he is a legit MVP canidate this year. It’s exciting to see how his game has continued to improve to the level that it has. I am relieved to see GK having the confidence in Ty Lawson to play him as much as he is. I know many of us were concerned before the season started that GK would continue to give AC minutes instead of using Ty. As many of us estimated, Ty is a real talent.
Nene had a decent game but obviously was lacking in rebounding.
It still makes me nervous that the Nuggs are in the habit of starting so slow—or maybe it’s that it takes them a couple of quarters to figure out their opponents; not sure why but this habit could hurt them in the playoffs. Never the less, beating SA in their home court feels great—just think, we won even with Tony Brothers officiating!

by chilly dog on Dec 5, 2009 10:00 PM MST reply actions

first half

spurs beat denver at their own game. this was how sa would play before last season. they scored 30 points in the 1st quarter and 29 in the second. the third quarter denver clamped down and held them to 12 points. that proved to be the turning point and denver kept the defensive pressure in the 4th by holding sa to 23 points. with several questionable calls by the refs it paid off denver kept their cool and did not get carried away with technicals. earl struggled with field goal shooting % and turnovers. he found other ways to contribute with rebounding, 2 blocked shots, 3 steals and 80% free throw shooting. look for the 8 player rotation to have a ripple effect in the next game. chancey seems to struggle shooting when denver plays a 3 guard offense the following game.

no matter what you may think about the blazers it is difficult not to root for greg oden the person. even when he was in high school and at ohio state he is always a class act. it also shows how lucky denver is with their training staff of jim gillam and steve hess. kmart playing in the nba at this level is impressive.

J.R.'s inbound pass

This is the was Paul J. Weber from the Associated Press saw J.R.‘s inbound (posted on the NBA’s site).

“NOTES: When Denver’s Smith couldn’t find an open man on an inbound pass in the third quarter, he bought himself another chance – by bouncing the ball off Ginobili’s face. He shook it off, while the crowd howled. …”

Seems to me it went of Manu’s chest. OR is last year’s ‘Thuggit’ bullshit starting over again???

The reaction time between the ball hitting manu and him falling down was ridiculous. The ball hit Manu in the chest/chin, he looked up at JR for a full second, and then collapsed like had been struck by a gun shot. Made the whole thing look so much worse than it was.

by snafu on Dec 6, 2009 12:11 AM MST up reply actions

I know!

That was the worst flop I have ever seen. It was more like a 3 second reaction time. He wanred to bait the refs into calling a technical foul, maybe. Refs just have to look at that video to know that Manu flops excessively so they shouldn’t always call stuff in his favor

by Chauncey on Dec 6, 2009 12:10 PM MST up reply actions

That was the momentum changer in the fourth

and they never recovered. We led for the rest of the game.

Serves him right, the insufferable flopper deserved a ball whipped at his face from point blank range.

Speaking of which, I am curious as to why nobody Laimbeers Parker once in a while. If the refs are going to blow the whistle regardless if you foul or not, why not put a solid foul on the guy and make him think twice about trying it again?

by Ski Bum on Dec 6, 2009 1:14 AM MST up reply actions

Maybe ACEIII or someone else who listned to the SA Announcers

could let us know what they said on JR’s inbound pass “to Ginobli’s face?” I was watching with sound down so i didn’t hear anything but definitely thought that sequence to be one of the goofiest things I’ve seen in the NBA this year. And it got goofier when they slowed it down. I can’t imagine Eliot thinking it was as bad as Manu made it…

They need to review gametape for flops and other unsportsmanlike fouls and penalties. If they determine a flop, you get fined and potentially suspended depending on number of infractions. Flopping is way too clownish for a sport like basketball. They need to fix it now.

Practice doesn't make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect.

The problem is the only way the Spurs win is through the referees. The NBA takes their assitance away and the Spurs don’t even make the playoffs.

Bench report

JR’s 17 belies a poor shooting night.

Lawson had some easy shots roll out but managed to score in double figures.

And Birdman? Two points, three rebounds no blocks.

I think the verdict is in: Our bench is powered by the home crowd. Especially Andersen.

But: The starters did their job tonight, except for Nene on the boards. To be fair, he was active on the glass, tipping stuff here and there. But Martin made up for it. Billups didn’t light it up, but he was crucial in the fourth quarter.

Great win. Fun to watch. Bring on the 76ers and the two AIs.

in the first half he had 10 points. he did not get his last basket until the fourth quarter. he has a pattern of being mia during the third quarter. it is a matter of the nuggets having him do to much and things he is not capable of doing. duncan is a good contrast of a player that is fundamentally sound versus a player that relies on athleticism like nene.

I was only able to watch the second half

But I was really impressed by Denver’s defense. They did a great job trapping off screens and forcing turn overs and bad passes. The rotations also seemed to be spot on and the only thing they really struggled with was keeping Parker from scoring in the paint. One of the better defensive efforts I’ve seen in a while.

by snafu on Dec 5, 2009 11:32 PM MST reply actions

Spurs Whiney Announcers

I watched this game on NBATV and they showed the home San Antonio broadcast. I know Marlow and Hastings are homers, but Bill Land and Sean Elliott take it to another level. Elliott in particular seems to despise the Nuggs, as he trashed our beloved Western Conference Finalists as “unintelligent”, “knuckleheads”, “bush league” etc. etc. They were particularly upset about the calls going the Nuggs way (and were silent when the replay showed the call was correct). The San Antonio announcers extreme bias and outright hatred of the Nuggs made this win even more fun. I really like the midrange game Melo has developed off the pick and roll with Nene. The more Melo can stick the 10-15 footer around the lane, the more devestating his drives to the hoop and longe range game are going to excel. He was “The Bully” tonight for sure. Great Win!

by ACEIII on Dec 5, 2009 11:58 PM MST reply actions

Spot on

As I mentioned in the game log I had to turn on music because of how infuriorating the Spurs announcers were. To come and continously call JR Smith a knucklehead. Well you should be fined Sean Elliott. The NBA has no place for irrational commentators. Sure be a homer, but give credit where credit is due. The better team won this game PERIOD. Great game against the Spurs, who are really starting to show their age

Title is very accurate. Spurs might miss the playoffs this year.

Incredible game for Melo to drop 34 after having only what, 12 at the half? Jeez.

Ginobili is still a flopping, ridiculous player. I’ll welcome the day he retires from the NBA, ball handling skills or not. He’s too slow to keep up on defense anymore so all he does is act like he got shot every time he’s touched. It’s too bad J.R.‘s inbound *didn’t* hit him in the face.

Can’t rest on our laurels too much on this. 76ers up next vs. AI and what’s sure to be a hungry team.

By the way, after Sam Bowie 2.0 went down, the Mavs and the Jazz lost tonight. Denver made a great push tonight.

Rebounds

Sure, Nenê and Bird didn’t get a lot of boards between them, but K-Mart got 13, nearly double his average, and Nuggets won the rebound count and most importantly (IMO) the O board count, so it’s all good.

Nene's contribution didn't show up on the stat sheet

But he was around the basket all night and boxing out. He allowed his teammates (especially JR) to get some easy boards because he kept Duncan and Blair out of reach. I’d much rather have Nene blocking out like a champ than Birdman jumping for every block and rebound and only getting a quarter of them.

Hey how about some fair calls..

I’m woundering when if ever these officials start calling (the muggings) that they put on Mello whats the deal …

by zippyDclown on Dec 6, 2009 5:15 AM MST reply actions

The calls will never be fair

I have come to accept this, and its scary but i think even the nuggets are. I dont know if its big market bias, or preconceptions about the teams, or just other teams kiss more ass, who knows. I know when i watch a game, for every time melo or Earl or one of the others (especially melo) go to the line, there were 4 other times they were fouled, and didnt get a call. This is especially scary when you think of how many times Melo is getting to the free throw line. I think a big difference is in years past, the nuggets (especially Melo) would get pissed at never getting calls, and either A) lose focus, and melt down or B) quit attacking the rim. I think since chauncy got there, and even more this year, they tend to do C) ratchet it, play harder, and attack the rim so hard, that there is no choice but to make calls. All in all, while there have been some bad losses, i think they were more of nuggets not playing to their level, instead of being beaten. I would love to See a true big man to play center, but you dont always get what you want. SO you just ruck up and move out. Lets go Nuggets.

by akdenver on Dec 6, 2009 6:06 AM MST reply actions

Agrees

We attacked the rim time and time againt this game. And besides our stifling D in that 3rd quarter that was the main ingredient for a big NUGGETS road win.

by wangstu13 on Dec 6, 2009 9:58 AM MST up reply actions

profound statement

I agree 100%. that is the reason lost in the WCF.

by Chauncey on Dec 6, 2009 12:14 PM MST up reply actions

Great Win

Beating the Spurs feels good. Especially while listening to the Spurs announcers call us undiciplined bush league thugs all night.
The nugs fought back well in this game esp after the miracle three at the 1st quarter buzzer and the strange lucky hoop by Blair that just bounced in. It was a very close 1st quarter but we found ourselves down 7 after that.
Just kept fighting though and kept it close. Melo was outstanding, so was Lawson. Kmart also played a good game grabbing key boards. Would like to highlight the work on the boards tonight. We seemed to keep the Spurs to one shot in many key moments. Even though Nene didnt get any, he was active, boxed out and Kmart, Melo would grab the board. 7 boards for JR is nice.
McDyess was a non factor and I dont think Blair would get off the bench for the Nugs. Karl wouldnt play 2 rookies and Lawson must play.
Give George credit, he is keeping AC on the bench and Ty is making us a much better team. That three minute stretch in the fourth where he and Parker kept going back and forth was great. Parker was scoring but I think the little guy frustrated him at times. Gotta love what he brings in relief of Chauncey. Our point guards earn us a lot of respect, even the SA announcers noticed. Big difference from last year. Law-son.

by gonugs on Dec 6, 2009 6:10 AM MST reply actions

Yes

Sean Elliot had that coming to him, what a douche. Lesson learned and hopefully he’ll grow from it. Better watch his mouth next time we play them.

I loved this win, a road performance I was waiting to see. There were a ton of reasons they shouldn’t have won. Spurs hit so many lucky shots and a bunch of our layups would not go in. The keys for me – only 9 attempts from three and 11 offensive rebounds. Shooting 48% against the Spurs D is great but also a reflection of the fact the Spurs are way overrated this year. I would be pissed if I were a Spurs fan, Duncan is doing way more than he should and they still can’t win. Richie Jeffy is terrible, he is a great role player but the guy is making like $13 mil – that’s insane. This SA team reminds me of last year’s, the big 3 are pretty good but beyond that they don’t have much.

The STIFF LIST (as of 8/30 by Andrew)

STIFF #1: J.R. SMITH
Remember when I wrote that J.R.'s "nine lives may be up"? Well, that was last January. With Denver police looking closely at J.R. allegedly attacking former 14er Damien Lolar at a recent Pepsi Center shoot-around, it's clear that J.R. will never mature and it's time to move him.

STIFF #2: LEON ROSE AND WORLDWIDE WES
After commandeering LeBron's departure from Cleveland, Rose and Wes are allegedly working to move Melo out of Denver. Let's hope the Nuggets do what's best for Denver and not these two franchise-destroyers.

STIFF #3: RIC BUCHER
The man who once guaranteed that Kobe Bryant had played his last game in a Lakers uniform has been gravy-training on other reporters' Melo-related stories all summer long. Who does Bucher think he is, a sports blogger?

STIFF #4: MARCUS JORDAN
Like father, like son. Last week, His Airness's 19-year-old son tweeted about dropping $50k at the Aria casino in Las Vegas prompting an investigation.

STIFF #5: INDIANA PACERS
Brandon Rush has been suspended five games for violating the NBA's drug policy and 2010 draftee Lance Stephenson was recently arrested on assault charges. Larry Bird sure is doing a great job re-shaping the Pacers' already shoddy image.
