When the majority of folks think of Tim Duncan they think of a future Hall of Fame power forward who could be considered one of the best to play the position. Me? I think of the constant whining and the two playoff series losses that Duncan and the Spurs earned against the Melo-Era Nuggets. With the Spurs struggling early ... perhaps there is finally a changing of the guard in order.
The particulars ...
Records:
Denver: 14-5
San Antonio: 9-7 (8-3 at home, 1-4 on the road) (key wins: vs. Dallas, at Houston )
Injuries:
Denver: None to report.
San Antonio: None to report.
Opposition's Take: Pounding the Rock
Somewhat of a bitter start to this preview right? Well, while there are valid rumblings of a Nuggets vs. Lakers rivalry brewing ... I have never relished more in beating another team in the NBA than when the Nuggets can take out the Spurs. San Antonio has played the game the "right way" for years with solid defense, balanced offense and killer instinct at opportune moments. The Nuggets "style" lends itself more to a free flowing offense, a risk taking defense and some key hit-or-miss moments.
The styles of play couldn't be more opposite of one another as most basketball purists love the Spurs and despise what the Nuggets represent.
Before the start of the season the national media kept having to change their pants anytime anyone brought up the Spurs because they surely got a bit too overexcited at the prospect of Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, Richard Jefferson and Antonio McDyess playing together. With star power like that to go along with role players George Hill, Matt Bonner, George Mason and underrated rookie DeJuan Blair the Spurs suddenly (on paper) were vaulted ahead of everyone out West, aside from the Lakers, to challenge for a spot in the Finals. But the key ... on paper. So far, the Spurs have underwhelmed because of injuries, injuries that should be expected with such a veteran squad.
Through just 16 games Manu Ginobili, 32 years-old, has missed 5 full games (only 7 minutes in another), Tony Parker, 27, has missed 4 full games (just 11 minutes in another) and Tim Duncan, 33, has missed 2 full games. Duncan has been pretty impressive in the 14 games he has played in averaging 18.4 points (21.4 career) and 11.1 rebounds (11.7 career) and is coming off being named the Western Conference Player of the Week.
Nuggets' fans can share the frustration of seeing a player on the decline as Chauncey Billups hasn't quite looked as good as he did last season and the same thing might be going on in San Antonio. The resurrection of Duncan thus far could be attributed to good health, but big men with the kind of miles that Duncan have are not long for playing well into their 30's at the same levels they once enjoyed.
I would have been much happier had the Nuggets been able to upset the Spurs in either the 2005 or 2007 playoffs, but Denver was not the better team then. The Nuggets can go a long way proving that they are the better team now by earning an impressive road win in Texas tonight. Things wont be easy as the Spurs have been playing much better at home (8-3) than they have on the road (1-4). The Spurs also have some young fresh legs in Hill and Blair that will act as rejuvenation machines for the veterans with their fiery play.
Make no doubt ... the Nuggets know this is a statement game. I expect the Spurs to be ready, coming off a home loss to the Boston Celtics Thursday night (Dec. 3).
If there is going to be a changing of the guard than what better time to start then now?

And I was pissed that Pop tainted a Nuggets win with that asterisk. I’m glad it nipped the Spurs in the end.
I’m really excited to see Denver play the Spurs, who appear to be healthy.
And I’ve never, ever been a Tim Duncan fan. His complaining doesn’t even get me so much as his inability to hit clutch free-throws. I was away from civilization much of the early 2000s when the Spurs were dominant. So maybe I missed something that would justify his hype.
Hopefully the Nuggets can win a solid game. But I promise there will be questionable calls favoring the home team and uncalled scrappy shots at Melo.
I predict the Spurs winning 96-95. But I hope I’m wrong.

The Spurs almost won that game because of how much Roger Mason Jr. (like 25 points that game) and Matt Bomner stepped up.

And remember being disappointed when the game started b/c it was evident the stars weren’t… and then the Spurs bench nearly won that game. Let’s silence their home crowd tonight – GO NUGGETS!

Have the Nuggets done their due diligence?
It would be awesome if the Nuggets could do a repeat of the game played against the Heat.
It seemed to me that every facet of the game was address. The coach was involved, the rebounding was there, the bench came with energy and ball movement was fabulous.
That game film should be a mandatory watch for all games the Nugget play.

That was a pretty sorry set of teams that came through The Can last week, and playing a better team is gonna be good for their concentration.

I know that we Nuggets fans are biased about this, but who do yall think is/was better: Dan Issel or Duncan?
Statswise and skillwise, Issel was better in my opinion, but Duncan has 4 more NBA rings than Issel.

The Charlotte Bobcats need to get up on the Stiff List for losing to the New Jersey Nets…I mean, they had their first 18 straight AND Kiki was coaching against Larry Brown. Might as well put Kiki up there for waiting until the Bobcats game to officially announce himself as the coach, even though he easily coulda done it before the Mavs game.

Big guys that are really good tend to get beat up a lot without getting a whistle. Marlowe related on one broadcast that a referee had told Melo he didn’t get calls because he was “just too big”. Wilt went through it, Shaq used to be the biggest whiner going until he figured out that it was no use. Garnett is a huge cry baby who I think was negatively influenced by Sprewell. Duncan is not different. The thing of it is, is that that kind of thing can be contagious and the Spurs collectively seem to be a bunch of whiners. Two seasons ago, the Nuggets were the biggest whiners in the league. Apparently part of doing it Karl’s way, starting last year, is to lay off the officials and get down and play defense.

Fucking Hate the Spurs
I think they signify what has been wrong with the NBA over the last 10 years. This team has figured out how to cheat the game and the sytem. The referees have decided in the past to give the Spurs game after game. They are probably the only team in the game that stops Nugs runs by getting fouls called at an alarming pace.
Referees seem to have a relationship with the Spurs in which it is agreed that the Spurs will never get blown out and will win most of their games through the whistle. I don’t think the reason for the Spurs slow start is due to injuries. I truly believe it is due to a certain book a former referee wrote for release this year. The Spurs and Tim Duncan are the biggest scam team in history. There is no way they come close to the Nugs in a fair fight. I guess we’ll just have to see if this is truly the year the referees realized they must call a fair fight or start to lose fans. Please god, don’t allow the referees to call foul after foul on Melo, JR, and Afflalo for the flops of Duncan, Ginobili, and Parker!

Really? Because no team drew fewer fouls than the Spurs last year. And our FT percentage has always been pretty bad. Makes it difficult to win games at the line, don’t you think?

All about pride
If the Nugs can just raise their level of play on the road think about how sweet this victory could be. It would knock the Spurs down to the same record as the Kings who are missing Kev Mart and Cisco. Thing is SA is better at home and I’ve already said so far the Nuggets are shit on the road – they look like no more than a .500 road team at best so far. When the Spurs struggle they still play defense and they are a bit better than their record now. Nugs should approach this as a must win even though it’s not because they need a show up win on the road against someone good.
The Spurs have historically relied on defense to win.
This year they are letting up more (averaging 96.1) but scoring a few more as well (averaging 100).
If the Nuggets play hard on the defensive end, their offense will come from their defense
and they will score over 100 points and win the game. If they do not score over 100 points they will likely lose tonight.
So, what you are saying is...
If a team scores more than 100 points and holds its opponent to to less than 100 points, then they will likely win?

After the Lakers and the Celtics...
The Spurs are my most hated team. From having to endure Ginobili’s flopping theatrics day in and day out when I LIVED in San Antonio shudder, to having to watch Tim Duncan’s eyes expand to 3x their original size after he hip checks a guard out of bounds, I really just despise the Spurs as a whole.
Not to mention Robert Horry’s b.s. he pulled against the Suns in the WCF a few years back.
Anyway, the Nuggets can win this game if they play the right way. San Antonio plays lockdown defense and does not allow easy baskets. The way to beat SA is to take it inside and get their bigs (Duncan, McDyess, Bonner) in early foul trouble. When Denver matches up against an equally sized opponent, they have a much better chance of winning.
Expect to see a lot of Lawson on Parker tonight and Afflalo on Ginobili. I think Nene can cover TD and Kmart on RJ. Overall, I like the Nuggets’ matchup on the Spurs much, much better this season.
As an aside, did anyone else feel like Kobe’s 3 was a gut-kick last night? I was pumped to see the heat up, then that ridiculous BS happens. Ugh.

Tim Duncan is David Stern’s model player. Unless something has changed who ever is driving the lane against Duncan is going to get a charge called against him.
Even though the Nuggets have beaten the Spurs in their house they are going to have to give it an extra extra effort tonight.
I had no idea that there was such animosity from Nuggets fans towards the Spurs. I guess it makes sense, considering recent playoffs history – most rivalries start there.
Regardless, it should be a good test for the Spurs. The team’s struggled early, with different injuries, three new starters, and a rookie that’s learning the system, but it has looked decidedly better lately. We’ll see just how much the team has improved.

What I mean to say is that the Nuggets need to score over 100 points tonight and that they generally do so when they start with a good defensive effort. I also don’t think they can beat the Spurs 86 to 82.

Now I’m not going to say that Tim Duncan is/was overrated; not by any means. But that game thread pic of him with his body language and facial expression, manages to perfectly capture the essence of how I’ve always viewed him. Awesome find, Nate! Someone else mentioned the 3 inch wide eyes already, so I’ll add the morbidly-disappointed-expression-with-head-tilt that he gives the refs. My blood pressure is rising just imagining it.

is the best MANIPULATOR of referees to ever coach a basketball game. i mean that as a compliment and he is an outstanding nba executive. not many people have been as successful playing the dual role of coach and executive. mike dunlevy and dan issle come to mind as individuals that have struggled. the addition of richard jefferson allows sa to have a competent running game again. last season age, injuries and a lack of team speed took away the running option. spurs are the best team in the nba at following and sticking to a game plan. they are second only to utah at executing in the half court offense. popovich is a graduate of the air force academy and it reflects in his approach to the game. tim duncan will go into the hall of fame as one of the most versatile big men to excel at both ends of the court. he was recruited to wake forest university and his skills were developed by current depaul head coach jerry wianwright. wainright graduated from colorado college and was the captain of the tigers basketball team for 2 years. wainright earned a masters degree from denver university. enjoy tonights game along with the underlying colorado connection.

Need to start playing better from the start of the game
Seems like we have been starting out slow against good teams lately. We need to work the glass more and have better defense. Our offense will come along if we play better defense

as long as we are close through the first half I think we win with our speed and youth in the second half. They are old and will make the mistakes in the second half with fatigue hopefully

Is there any way or trick to make ADTHE work better? As it is now its so unbearable. 1 second of play followed by 3 seconds of freeze. I have basic cable with ESPN/TNT and Broadband NBA League Pass. I hate these NBA TV :(

As long as the nugs keep attacking the rim I think they’ll be ok.
when they start jacking up lots of three’s i get frustrated.
Down 6 on the road...
I feel we are playing decently and if we had gotten a couple of better ref calls on our drives we might be tied or winning. I think if we come out with a stronger defensive effort in the third quarter, like in the Miami game, we should be able to start pulling away
Nuggets just need to keep rebounding
Spurs took 15 threes and are shooting over 50%, they will win if they keep that up but we should be able to play better D next half
this is definetly a winnable game
we nearly took the lead late in that half. I reckon we are actually playing better then the Spurs. We are winning the rebound battle 20-17..im very suprised at that. We just got to keep attacking and the refs are bound to start calling somthing..GO Nuggets!!

looks to me like this game has allready been decided by the referees. what a shame, makes me sick to my fucking stomach. I don’t know how the nba thinks they can get away with this shit but people will hopefully end up in jail at some point.
makes me feel really sorry for gk having to try to keep his players in the game knowing that the game is rigged.

Two things:
1. They don’t drive the ball demonstrably more than other teams, you just happen to only watch the Nuggets (though, you’ll inevitably say you watch all teams).
2. It’s unlikely that the Spurs would draw ‘ticky tack calls’ and still be trailing in the FTA margin.

I wouldn't say that I watch every game because I don't
But I would say that the nuggets are probably one of about 8 teams that I have seen (and I have not seen all the teams play I will admit that). It seems that some teams have offenses that run through jump shooting and lucky shots. Our offense, when we are good, seems to run through the lane. I’m not saying they go in the paint more than everyone else just more than a strong majority of teams

That's why it was good when we have multiple Big 12 schools in BCS
Twice as much money for everyone else in the league.
Whoever actually goes to the BCS Bowl gets a larger share of course but everyone in the league gets a share.
Besides more money at CU means more money to buy out Hawkins next year ;)

Oden dropped to the floor clutching his left knee after colliding with a driving Aaron Brooks with 5:45 remaining in the first quarter.
