Melo's gunning may earn him the scoring title

Melo_free_throw_mediumWith all the points Carmelo Anthony is scoring this season it's about time we discuss his chances at earning the scoring title. One of Melo's biggest friends in his quest to lead the league in points is his ability to get to the free throw line, where he's currently shooting a career best 86.1%.

Star-divide

This piece comes out two days after Kobe Bryant usurps the current NBA scoring lead from Melo with his 44 point performance against the Golden State Warriors on December 29th. Nonetheless, Melo will be in the scoring hunt the rest of the season as the Nuggets need their star to keep filling it up as they rack up wins.

NBA Scoring Leaders:

1.) Kobe Bryant 30.4

2.) Carmelo Anthony 30.0

3.) LeBron James 28.9

4.) Kevin Durant 28.4

5.) Dwayne Wade 26.6

I've never been one to glorify individual scoring, but what Melo is doing this season has to be recognized. If Anthony can win the NBA scoring title it'll be the first time a Nugget has won the award since Alex English did it in the 1982-83 season when he averaged 28.4 points per game. The funny part about English winning the title that season? He had two other seasons in which he netted a higher averages and his '82-83 numbers don't even make the Nuggets top five scoring seasons of all-time.

Denver Nuggets Top 5 Scoring Seasons:

1.) Spencer Haywood 30.0 (1969-70 ABA)*

2.) Alex English 29.8 (1985-86)

3.) Kiki Vandeweghe 29.4 (1983-84)

4.) Carmelo Anthony 28.9 (2006-07)

5.) Alex English 28.6 (1986-87)

*Haywood won the ABA scoring title in 1969-70 as a rookie with the Denver Rockets.

The most impressive aspect to Melo's game this season?

The evolution of Melo's free throw shooting has been absolutely remarkable. During Melo's first six seasons in the league he couldn't crack better than 80.8% from the charity stripe. In fact, Melo has only submitted two seasons slightly above 80% from the foul line and shot just 79.3% last season. Melo's 6.8 free throw percentage increase this season from 79.3% to 86.1% is practically unheard of at this juncture of a player's career, especially considering he's shooting more free throws now than he ever has.

For example, Paul Pierce, another big bodied small forward and an 80% career free throw shooter, turned in his highest free-throw shooting rate of 10.3 attempts per game in the 2005-06 season, but shot just 77% from the line. Pierce has since seen an increased free-throw percentage in his last three seasons in Boston around the 84% mark. His best season to date is the 2007-08 season when he made 84.3% of his freebies, but Pierce saw a decrease in his trips to the line averaging just 6.1 attempts per game.

Just take a look at Melo's numbers that follow and pay close attention to his attempts versus his percentages and you'll really appreciate the work he's done on his free throw shooting.

Season  Avg. Made/Attempted Per Game Percentage
2003-04 5.0-6.4 77.7%
2004-05 6.1-7.6 79.6%
2005-06 7.2-8.9 80.8%
2006-07 7.1-8.7 80.8%
2007-08 6.0-7.7 78.6%
2008-09 5.6-7.1 79.3%
2009-10 8.5-9.9
(thru Dec. 31, 2009)
86.1%

To be shooting more attempts than ever (9.9) and a career high percentage (86.1%) is a rare thing and shows just how hard Melo has worked on the easiest points you can get in the league. Free throw attempts per game tell you a few things about a player. Most notably, if they play aggressively the higher attempts will reflect that, also how crafty they can be at getting to the line without being overly aggressive attacking the rim ... like Chauncey Billups and other NBA players who seem to be able to get to the line when they need to by pulling their arms through on hand checks and other veteran moves.

Melo currently finds himself among the league leaders in just about every free throw category. He ranks 2nd in attempts per game (9.9), 1st in free throws attempted overall (316), 1st in free throws made (272) and 11th in percentage (86.1%). It's no secret that his free throw shooting has a lot to do with his career high 30 points per game average.

Melo only needs 152 more free throw attempts to break his mark of 468 from last season, but he played in just 66 games. The mark we should be looking at Melo breaking is his 709 career-high free throw attempts during the 2005-06 season. Melo needs just 393 more attempts to break that mark and still has a possible 50 games left to do it. At his current pace Melo is on schedule to shoot 495 more free throws (although we can probably expect him not to reach that projection).

After watching J.R. Smith struggle at the foul line this season, it's been nice to see Melo's vast improvement. Now when games go down to the wire the Nuggets have two "coolers" (as Bill Simmons call them) that can ice the game for the Nuggets in Billups (90.3%) and now Melo and we all know that inbounding the ball to your best shooters can be dicey late in games.

Biggest competition for the scoring title?

The top five scorers in the league are not going to change much the rest of the way. There will be jostling between Kobe, Melo and LeBron as the season wears on, but I think we can expect number 24 to be Melo's biggest competition for the title.

Kobe is surrounded by guys who can score the ball with Lamar Odom, Pau Gasol, Ron Artest and Andrew Bynum, but the offense still is built to let Kobe shine when he wants to and if you think he'll let up in hopes of winning more games, then you don't know The Black Mamba very well. Winning the West, the scoring title, the league MVP, the Finals MVP and the NBA Championship in the same season would be Jordan-esque and Kobe is obsessed with being the best to play the game and certainly doesn't want to let Melo take anything from him ... friends off the court notwithstanding.

Through 31 games Bryant has amassed 941 points and Melo has notched 961 points, but in 32 games. This could come down to final games of the season and best case scenario...we see a little repeat of history with the legendary George Gervin vs. David Thompson scoring binge on the last day of the season April 9th, 1978. That day Thompson scored 73 points, but Gervin turned in 63 points later in the day and won the scoring title by the slimmest of margins 27.22 to 27.15 (maybe just a made free throw of a difference). Hopefully things will work out a bit differently for the Nuggets this time around.

Any way you slice it, Melo is having an incredible season on the offensive end and one that could earn him some high individual accolades. The trick will be balancing those individual marks with team goals, but for now the Nuggets need their star to keep on gunning.

i think once chauncey comes back melo will be scoring a lot easier... i know its obvious

but w/o chauncey the teams double of ty or AC and force melo into a tough situation…. w/ chauncey it really alleviates the situation

more is less AND less is more

dwayne wade won the scoring title last season. heat were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs. the best thing that happened to melo last season was NOT going to the all star game. oh ya and by the way denver played in the western conference finals. free throws is just one of many different ways to score. another method is OFFENSIVE REBOUNDING. with melo’s size, skills and athleticism at the small forward spot there is no reason why he cannot average double figures in rebounding. a nice habit he needs to get into is following his shot. another habit he needs is passing the ball right after he catches it when double teamed. the defense does not have a chance to rotate and he will have position on the offensive glass. he can score more points in a quarter then most players in the nba can score in a game. melo is getting his points the hardway. he can become a more efficient scorer. he can play less minutes, take less shots AND score more. first he needs to become a WILLING PASSER and second he needs to become a DETERMINED REBOUNDER.

and one more thing

MELO QUIT BITCHING ABOUT THE REFEREES. save your energy for rebounding.

I dont see melo in double figures rebounding...

…but I would like to see him at a little over 8 a game.

But yes, I dont like when Melo thinks he gets fouled then talks to the ref and half runs down the court on defense.

Overall…gotta love Melo!

Melo has the size of some power forwards

I agree with 8 per game…I wouldn’t mind Melo decresing his scoring to 25 ppg in order to increase his apg to around 5. Best case scenario is Melo taking less FGA but being more efficient with them while still going to the FT line a lot. I know that Afflalo is in for defense, but that 41 points to Roy was pretty bad, and I want to see what JR Smith in the starting lineup looks like

is there nothing that can be done

to improve a player’s free throws late in their career?
Apparently yes there is! So there is no excuse for JR missing all those freebies, especially since he’s such a sharp shooter at range.

Nate: I’ve often wondered why more players don’t just use the underhanded or granny shot when shooting free throw attempts like my Dad does when we play horse? Its completely legal and in many cases is more consistently accurate for players whose names aren’t Melo or Billups??

thoughts?

by InboundingLobPass on Dec 31, 2009 3:52 PM MST reply actions

Rick Barry led the league in free throw shooting using the granny shot. Modern players are too worried about how they look to shoot it so they won’t. If a few guys started leading the league in free throw shooting with a granny shot, it might come into style but I doubt it.
I heard something once about Shaq hiring Barry to teach him, but Shaq wouldn’t do it right and was even worse with it or something went worng there, I don’t remember the details.

Really early players used to use the granny shot from the field until players figured out that shot was very easy to block.

jeff hornecek

hornecek once made 67 consecutive free throws and ranks #12 all time in career free throw percentage with 87.7% in nba history. jeff shot the ball 2 handed until the suns drafted him in the second round. hornecek played for his father at lyons township high school in lagrange, illinois. other players of note from his high school are marcus washington (marquette university) and owen brown (university of maryland). jeff was an outstanding player but his own father could not break him of his 2 handed shot. as a result he walked on at iowa state. hornecek had an outstanding college career. he led the cyclones to the sweet sixteen of the ncaa tournament. he was still shooting 2 handed and went in the second round to phoenix. the suns taped his left thumb to the finger next to it. hornecek went on to become one of the nba’s most technically correct shooters.

Another Trick

the past couple of offseasons the coaches in Toronto use a large rubber band to hold Jose Calderon’s elbows in a straight line with his shoulders. If he didn’t have the rubber band he would shoot standing with his right arm next to a wall so if his elbow flared out it would hit the wall. His fg, 3pt and FT % all rose drastically last year. He even went something like the thirty first games of the season without missing a free throw

by Zachm219 on Dec 31, 2009 7:06 PM MST up reply actions

LOL Jose shot a mind-bending 97% I think.

I want JR to get to 80%. His stroke is actually pretty good, but he doesn’t seem to put the effort. If JR shoots 80% FT and drives to the basket more (thus getting more FTA) he should average 17 ppg

instructions for improving free throw % in the nba

1. do away with the salary cap. 2. a players compensation is multiplied by their free throw percentage. in other words shaq makes $20+ million dollars this season. he shoots 50%. his pay is now 10 million. nene makes 10 million. he shoots 69%. his pay 6.9 million. what the players get- no salary cap. what the owners get-performance based pay. what the fans get-the satisfaction of seeing a millionaire world class athlete that shoots free throws like a stiff gets stiffed.

only one problem

No salary cap? Next year the lakers starting lineup looks like this pg-who cares, sg-kobe, sf-Lebron, pf-Bosh, C-Gasol Bench: Wade, Joe Johnson, Odom, Bynum. Annual payroll-250 million, championships -all of the 2000 teens.

ya melo's a beast but......

it does’nt really mean much without that gold ball. untill then people will just keep saying at least you got melo and that shit is getting old. hate to be a downer but thats the truth of it all. i think we all had high expectations for this year ( i was expecting atleast 58-60 wins) but the season is just 32 games in and we are at 20-12 60 wins with this team would be a miracle but my hopes are still up but we will see i still think we need another quality big and i’m on the fence with karl and who really know when billups will be back (lost of conflicting reports) but this team needs to know how to play when someone goes down. as far as nene and jr if we could get david lee for any one of them or both i say see ya have a good time in new york.
  lets go nuggets

Not important

I’ve never thought I’d be watching Melo shoot 30+ shots a game and I will never think it’s a recipe for any type of success. When Melo figures out how to get more out of teammates without Chauncey’s steady hand he will be an MVP candidate. In my opinion Lebron could easily average more than Kobe or Melo but knows he is counted on to many more things for his team to win.

by runningdonut on Dec 31, 2009 5:20 PM MST reply actions

As long as

Melo doesn’t put his scoring title before his team wins, I hope he can beat his buddies, Kobe and Lebron, for the scoring title. Melo has shown unselfish play this season, passing the ball more. He also has greatly improved his shot from the free throw line. A title for the Nuggets would be a good thing.

Who cares...

…about the scoring title. There’s only one title that really matters in the NBA. ‘Melo can worry about collecting any of the others as soon as he’s got that gold ball under his belt.
Besides, I don’t think there’s any doubt that LeBron could wrap up the scoring title with ease, if he wanted to, this guy could average 45 pts.

by AGAINST_DA_LAW-SON on Jan 1, 2010 7:32 AM MST reply actions

I think the scoring title means something

As far as career accomplishments go, it definitely doesn’t hurt to have that on your resume. But like RunningDonut said, I would prefer Melo to work on other parts of his game as well and try and get his teammates more involved. Sometimes he doesn’t let the game come to him, but when he does he is nearly unstoppable.

by GoldenNugget on Jan 1, 2010 3:33 PM MST reply actions

Melo needs to pass a bit more

3 apg is pretty good, but all the rest of the top scorers are getting more. Beanhead Bryant somehow gets over 4 a game, Lebron gets around 6, and Wade also gets around 6. I know that Durant also doesn’t do much passing, but this is only his third season.

I've got an idea...

Alright fellas tell me if this is possible…
The Nuggets sign Tracy McGrady and win the 2010 NBA World Championships!
I understand one response is to say we tried this already with A.I., but I think this is different. McGrady has a completely different game/style and with CB at the point, he could make sure the ball gets distributed.
The window with Billups is shrinking, I say the time is now. Kroenke can afford it, Werkentein can make it happen! Go Nuggets!

Dreams

I thought about this myself and it only happens in Lakerland. Stan would be paying roughly 23 million for half a season of TMac. It would make the Nugs the #1 contenders for the title out of the West no doubt though.

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
