Best start in Nuggets history?... (Nuggets/Rockets recap)

72599_rockets_nuggets_basketball_medium_mediumSometimes games have absolutely no personality whatsoever.  Tonight's relatively easy victory over the Rockets was one of those games.  But sitting at 19-7, the best start in Nuggets NBA franchise history, who are we to complain?

Star-divide

First off, let's congratulate this band of Nuggets for completing the best 26-game start in Nuggets history.  That's no small feat.  Yes, they've had a pair of dreadful, alarming losses combined with a few more clunkers that we'd expect better from, but overall this is a damn good team.  They still open games lethargically (as we witnessed again tonight), but there may not be a better third quarter team in the NBA right now.  I remember just a few seasons ago when the third quarter was the Nuggets death knell.  Oh how times have changed.

But is this really the best start in Nuggets history?  Record-wise, yes.  Through 26 games last season, the Nuggets stood at 17-9, but you could argue the first four games didn't count (no Carmelo Anthony for games one and two, versus the Lakers in game three and at Golden State in game four with no Allen Iverson).  In the Nuggets first 26 games W.C. (with Chauncey), they were 18-8, one off this team's pace.  But this season's Nuggets have lost five games to sub-.500 teams, including once at home, whereas last season's Nuggets (again, W.C.) didn't drop a single contest to a sub-.500 team in those first 26 games W.C.  So while technically their records are almost a wash, I still liked the spirit and game-by-game seriousness of last season's Nuggets better at this point in the season.

From my seats at Pepsi Center, I don't think I saw the Nuggets break a sweat tonight.  Yes, they dug themselves an early hole (I remember turning to my seat mate and saying "they only have 11 points with four minutes to go in the first quarter?!") and then suddenly they were up at the end of the first period and never looked back.

The Nuggets successfully completed what I labeled on Friday as their "no excuses week" (three home games against opponents playing them on the second of a back-to-back) with the record they should have had: 3-0.  Part of being a great team is simply doing what you're expected to do, and the Nuggets have done so.  Meeting expectations might be a tad boring, but we'll take these relatively easy victories any day.

The view from the not-so-cheap-seats...

...I didn't catch the Chauncey Billups groin injury but did see Chris Andersen limping a bit.  The "Birdman" seemed to shake it off, however, and hold his own down the stretch.

...Melo did his best impersonation of Kevin Durant/Alex English by scoring the quietest 38 points I've ever seen him score.  I guess that happens when you shoot an astoundingly high 20 free throws (and he promptly sank 19 of them).  Convinced that this had to be Melo's career high for free throw attempts, I just looked it up and he amazingly had two 22-plus free throw attempt games during the 2005-06 season.

...believe it or not, watching J.R. Smith shoot threes lately had become cringe-worthy for some Pepsi Center fans.  I won't proclaim that J.R. has ended his shooting slump, but tonight's 21-point effort was the most he had scored in 12 games.  Eek.

...after Nene missed his wide open layup, he laughed at himself and had a "I can't believe I didn't just dunk the damn ball!" look on his face.  So did we!

...did Ty Lawson's sick under-the-basket scoop layup look as good on TV as it did in person?  Just wow.

...I'm embarrassed to admit this but I had no idea who David Andersen was until tonight (off the top of my head, I can go 10-11 deep on any NBA roster...12 might be a stretch).   But this (legitimately) 6'11" kid from Australia has some game.  And believe it or not, his 17 points against our Nuggets tonight wasn't his career high: he put up 19 against the Lakers earlier in the season.

Non-Stiff of the Night

-Carmelo Anthony: Melo didn't shoot particularly well, but as noted above - when you score 38 points and no one really notices - you've ascended to an Alex English-type level in this game.  It's become expected/assumed that Melo will go for 30 nightly and anything short is considered an off night.  That in itself is the definition of a super star player.

Stiff of the Night

-Chase Budinger: Pardon the reverse racism here, but if you're a white American (i.e. non-Euro), second round draft pick and you're still playing in the NBA you have one job to do: hit wide open shots.  And Budinger - who deserves a lot of credit for working his way into the Rockets rotation - couldn't hit any of his shots tonight ending up 0-4 from the field.

WOOO! David Andersen!

He was drafted by Atlanta years back, but stayed in Europe, where he could get more money.
Houston needed a big man this season, they offered him a good 3-year deal and the trade for his rights was done.

He’s done pretty well for himself too.

Budinger

Budinger had a very big game last night against Detroit, in which he played nearl 43 minutes (only sat when T-Mac was in) and was his first career start..
A rookie (ie. not as good as Anthony, James, Wade, Paul, etc.) is probably always going to have somewhat of a let-down game the night after a big one.

Butters

Every time they showed buddinger, I kept thinking that Butters from South Park was on the court. Then the announcers talked about him being a volleyball player. 6’7" with a 40" vertical. I used to play volleyball several days a week. Glad I never played against him, ouch.

Not because of the bare chests, but because 4’2" Tom Cruise beat Val Kilmer at volleyball? Don’t think so.

I said what I meant and will not backtrack

That was an aweful scene to put in the movie. From a film lover standpoint, it was totally out of place, and made no sense with the script. Whenever volleyball is mentioned I will chime in with my impression of Comicbook Guy “Worst bi-curious scene ever”. Not to mention the high improbability of Cruise spiking a volleyball on a regulation net?! in the sand?! Not even Lil Fiddy cent nate Robinson could achieve such a task and he’s an athlete. Look at the Oprah tape of Cruise jumping on the couch. That is not a man that can kill over a net.

Needs to get the reverse racism blast taken away. He obviously should have been drafted higher and has played just as well on the move as he has beyond the arc. He’s not a one dimensional player by any means.

The sub. 500 mentality

“So while technically their records are almost a wash, I still liked the spirit and game-by-game seriousness of last season’s Nuggets better at this point in the season.”

This is a common complaint about this year’s Nuggets that I strongly disagree with. Hypothetical situation for a moment:
Let’s say you have two teams, Team A and Team B. Both teams are 15-5. Team A is 10-0 vs. sub .500 opponents and 5-5 vs. playoff caliber teams. Team B. is 5-5 vs. sub. 500 opponents, but 10-0 vs playoff caliber teams. If I am interpreting you correctly, it seems as if you would rather have Team A because they take care of business against the dregs of the league. Isn’t it FAR more important for a team to prove that they can win against playoff competition and in big games?

I would much rather the Nuggets show that they can pull out consistent victories against the league’s best than prefer them to be flawless against mediocre and bad teams. Since nobody goes 82-0, it seems silly to complain about not being Team A when we are rooting for Team B (to a certain extent).

Of our 7 losses, 5 are against teams that would be in the playoffs if they started tomorrow. So I suppose that means that we are actually “Team C.”

Still a lot of improvement

Even though we are off to the best start in franchise history I feel there is still tons of room for improvement. And can we cut the bs and start going to Nene an a regular basis. Things just seem to flow better when the “big fella” gets his touches.

D.Andersen

He played in Spain last two seasons for Barcelona.
He can shoot the ball pretty good for a big man (Im not saying he is Dirk, but he can shoot it).

Good win for the Nuggets, now it’s time to keep it going against NOLA

If Chaunce has to be out

We already know AC will play and possibly start but I hope Ty will at least receive a big increase in minutes. I want to see what he does at PG with the starters at least for a few stretches of game.

I always enjoyed T-Mac since watching him at the 05 all-star game. I still like his game no homo but it’s clear Houston is trying to trade him. I’m not sure what letting other teams window shop for 7 minutes is going to do besides show he is healthy.

Gotta blame something I guess

If the world of entertainment has taught us anything it’s that haters are gonna hate. Think back a few years ago when the Nuggets were making the transition from dreg to decent to contender and I recall Nugget fans crying foul over everything that didn’t go our way. “Ah the refs hate us” etc, etc. When PHX, Mavs, Rockets were among the best of the best 2004-2007 they had nothing to complain about except who had more All star nods. It just comes with success, the critics that is.
i really wish that whole “Thuggets” title will go away at some point. It’s good for a team to have an identity, but not all identities are worth it. A good portion of our players are activly involved in charitable works. K-Mart sits on the Board of a charitable organization, as well as Melo. AC and Bird are always being shown in fluff pieces on the local news for charitable work. CB handed out turkeys in the freezing cold the week before thanksgiving. Yep, our whole organization is dotted with felons and low lives. Even the coach is on TV advocating for Shaken Baby Syndrome, how dastardly!

Devil's Advocate

I hate to do it BUT, our Nuggets have had their share of stupid off-court mistakes and moments of extremely poor judgement. While I think it is unfair to judge based on how they look, our Nuggets need to stop fucking up off the court if they want to shed the “Thuggets” nick-name.

By the by, EVERY team (and its players) in the NBA do charity work.

Practice doesn't make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect.

by Big Mickey D on Dec 17, 2009 10:46 AM MST up reply actions

True on the charity work front but

Chairing a non for profit charity as K-Mart does is a feat. When was the last “off court” or even in game occurance of thuggery? No you can’t count JR’s jail time (continuation of a punishment). Melo’s DUI in 06/07 wasn’t it? And that’s not a thug move that’s just irresponsible on his part. I think the team as a whole is doing much better in their home lives and off court behavior.

Speaking of the devil’s advocate. Not even Al Pacino could have saved that movie from Keanu. All I can think about when I see him is “Ted” Theodore Logan of Wild Stallions. Excellent.

by Joelsopinion on Dec 17, 2009 11:42 AM MST up reply actions

Balkman's DUI

But, yeah, I agree that they have been better as of late. I am a Nuggets fan so I can let things slide and allow for maturity. This thread is in regard to other teams’ fans and what they call our Nuggets…

Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure was a significantly better movie than Devil’s Advocate. SIGNIFICANTLY! And since we are on the topic, I’ll go out on a limb and suggest that Keanu is not a bad actor. As evidence, I give you:
    Parenthood
    the first Matrix
    Point Break (R.I.P. Patrick Swayze)
    The Replacements
I suppose he might still be a bad actor, but he makes some pretty watchable and enjoyable movies…

Defense

I think a lot of the reason their seems to be a bit less excitement or passion in the games is because the defense has improved so much. Getting it done defensively has reduced the need/dependency to get it done on the offensive side this year. Once they get ahead, they stay ahead… Not such a bad thing at all in my mind.

Excuses are made for the Nuggets shortcomings all the time

I agree that good teams get it done without all guns healthy. The Nuggets lost to two sub.500 teams with the excuse that Kmart was out.
These upcoming games are going to be interesting. Then maybe not. CB1 will be doing the real coaching I hope.

by samdman on Dec 18, 2009 4:40 AM MST up reply actions

Yep

The true contenders play well through injuries. When Pau was out for a while, it didn’t matter because the rest of the Lakers stepped up and they continued to win games. Jameer Nelson has been out for most of the season for the Magic, but they are doing fine (albeit yesteraday’s blowout loss against the Heat), as Anthony Johnson, White Chocolate, and Vinsanity are stepping it up for them (Anthony Johnson, their third PG, is way better than AC by the way). The Celtics don’t really have any major injuries, but they are like 20-4 or something, and the Mavs don’t have a 100% Josh Howard, but Shawn Marion and Erick Dampier steps it up for them.

This is why the Nuggets need to step it up. Sure, KMart is a very important player, but we still should be able to win without him. I feel really bad as a Nuggets fan for saying this, but we really are third in the West this year…

THE A.C. EFFECT...

Hello BOGGERS! I guess we can resurrect our favorite past time – LET’S BASH A.C.! I mean I don’t understand it. How did we get along for so long without having A.C. to kick around? It’s a mystery. It’s the mystery! But here we are again and the fun is back. God help him is he has more than 2 turnovers in N.O. or Memphis (God help us if Chauncy is still hurt and A.C. has to play against Atlanta, right fellas?? It hurts to wager against the Nuggets – but we can do it! I KNOW WE CAN!!).Even though he has been a pretty steady hand coming in ice cold from the bench we should be on the edge of our keyboards ready to rip him to shreds. And double God help him if he turns the ball over on a poorly designed inbound play and that old wound gets opened up again.

So here you go ladies and gentlemen. You can quit kicking your dogs and beating your wives and children. A.C. is back, and God help him if he makes a single mistake! But let’s hope he does!!!!!

List of top teams to watch

There was a post of the top teams to watch. The Rockets just moved to second on the list for me, behind Denver. They were clearly outmatched in the talent and size department, but kept at it, ran their plays, worked hard, and were competitive. If you took the Rockets work ethic and combined it with the Nuggets roster, they’d set a record for most wins easily.

Best start . . but. . .

I was looking at Hollinger’s rankings and we have had the easiest schedule so far in terms of opponent W-L percentage. The other thing is that Melo is bringing it every night regardless of who is on the other side. What really matters is that the other guys are in need of rising to the challenge too, on a consistent basis. If we continue to improve our defense like we have been then I think the sky is the limit. On a side note I don’t think I will attend any games when I come to Denver, because the one game at the can I went to they lost. . . to Minnesota.

"Never won a playoff series"

Is a quote from Marlow last night. If that’s true (too lazy to google right now) then I’d stay clear of the once great player moniker. That and well, I never liked the dude to begin with. Awesome one on one player. The only problem is that he’s always had four other guys playing alongside him. For a 6 or 7 time allstar to have never won a playoff series, even when playing alongside a great center is well embarrassing.

by Joelsopinion on Dec 17, 2009 11:51 AM MST up reply actions

B-ball is still a team game

T-Mac’s career playoff averages: 29 ppg, 7 rpg, 6 apg, 1.3 spg, 1 bpg. I just don’t see how you can blame T-Mac for his team’s shortcomings when he puts up numbers like that.

by GoldenNugget on Dec 17, 2009 12:42 PM MST up reply actions

T-Mac

T-Mac was “great” in his prime. He could flat out ball. I don’t blame him for not winning in the playoffs, just like I didn’t blame Melo. His teams simply weren’t that good on most occassions. Perhaps he could have made a difference on others…but that doesn’t mean the man wasn’t for real before getting injured on pretty much daily basis.

by Pusherman on Dec 17, 2009 12:56 PM MST up reply actions

The mark of a great player is winning

AND winning when it matters. I have never once called Melo great, but the path he’s on now could change that. Back to Mcgrady, he was a good individual player. Great accolades are given to good players that make others around them better. That’s something that Mcgady hasn’t done yet. Gifted athlete, high b-ball IQ, bad luck on injuries I say yes to all. Great player…prove it to me.

When every team YOU’RE ON never makes it out of the first round something is up. Either T-bag is on bad teams, or he maybe the common factor in 7 games series losses. Look at last years Rockets team. They lose T-bag and go on to push the Lakers to the limit, more so than my beloved Nuggets did.
Seven time All-Star, two time scoring champ and NOT ONE playoff series win with any team he’s on. Think back to Toronto with VC, Orlando with G Hill, Stven Hunter (healthy) Juwan Howard, and the Rockets since 05.

I’m not doubting his talent, but he never gets the job done.

Me-Mac

T-Mac deserves the stiff award from last night. Budinger may have gone 0-4, but T-Mac looked completely lost. All from a guy who has been complaining about sitting on the bench and having to play into shape through practice the past month. T-Mac was a great player and got the Rockets places they wouldn’t have been otherwise, but I’ve watched too many game 7’s where in the final 2 minutes somehow he has nothing left in the tank. He thinks he deserves everything, great players TAKE everything. Last night T-Mac was in because he has been spouting he deserves playing time for the last few weeks, we all saw what good it did.

this was an easy victory because the refs made it an easy victory.

they must have a vendetta against Landry and everyone else on our team. and melo got to the line 20 times. just as much as the rockets team did. we drove just as much or maybe even more and didn’t get a call. J.R smith is one hell of a player, but maybe you guys should check how he’s doing after he broke his neck flopping all over Landry last night.

Maybe your team shouldn't have turned the ball over 20 times

or maybe have a superstar like Melo who can get to the line 20 times. Or maybe you should just get over it already, we’ll see you again in Houston but for now we have moved on…New Orleans time.

Look, it's a bird...no, it's a plane....oh never mind it's just fucking balloon boy

Maybe you should have tried keeping Melo out of the post

Don’t get me started about the fouls at the end of the game. You guys wanted to make those fouls.

Can't watch the link

Because of company firewalls but I am assuming that this is some egregious and horrible flop in last night’s game by a Nugget and that it changed the entire outcome of the game? Probably not, but I’ll bite anyway; Of all the irrational, unsubstantiated and homertastic things that I have ever said or written about the Nuggets, the one that is the very closest to being absolutely and positively true is that the Nuggets (especially without A.I.) flop less than any other team in the damn NBA. Why? Because they actually get fouled all the time without calls. They’d probably flop more if they weren’t actually getting hammered out there all the time. They don’t need to flop. In fairness, I think that the Rockets avoid flopping quite a bit as well.

Rockets 4 Life: you have a good, well-coached team. The Rockets are difficult to hate. I am assuming that the clip that I cannot pull up was just too much for you and you had to cross over into enemy territory and stir things up because of it. (I’ve done similarly on the Lakers stupid fansite.) Out of curiosity, do you absolutely light up the Spurs’ site (Pound the Rock) when you play them? Those guys flop on both sides of the court virtually every damn series! You have to admit that the Nuggets – for all their challenges and issues – don’t flop much. Admit it. Or at least admit that we are not in the top half of the Association in terms of flopping (and neither are your Rockets…)

Practice doesn't make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect.

No it's from a Jazz game

A flop cost them a chance to tie with the clock winding down. See my below comment.

i don't waste my time on the spurs or mavericks blogs.

i go and post nothing but videos of AK-47 flopping on the jazz blog :). i hate the jazz with a passion. jerry sloan is a snake who coaches flopping basketball and teaches weasels like AK-47, Okur, Harpring, (the entire team), etc how to flop and spaz out like your having a seizure after someone breathes on you.

That was a nice bit of acting i must say.

Not as bad as Keanu but close. Was that AK47 falling back like an action movie explosion extra? That was pathetic. I’ve voiced several times that JR (and everyone in the league for that matter) should just stop flopping. These men are built like giants, yet they fall over if a butterfly lands on them.

By the way, most Nugget fans have mad respect for the Rockets, and coach Adleman over there. We were rooting like hell for you guys in the 2nd round last year esp. with no Yao.

not exactly

I was rooting for the Rockets so the Nuggets could have home court advantage for the WCF.

Plus, I like to put it this way:

1. My favorite NBA team is the Nuggets
2. My second-favorite NBA team is whoever’s playing against the Lakers next

by ParkHillNative on Dec 18, 2009 10:51 AM MST up reply actions

Think whatever you want

I really don’t care.

Rockets are going nowhere this season. If they tanked to get a good pick in the draft, then I’d understand it. But you guys have a GM in Morey and a coach in Adelman that don’t know how to quit…and that’s a compliment if your brain can’t comprehend it.

By the way, we should have signed Matt Barnes in the off-season instead of Joey Graham. Barnes is a tough combo forward defender covered in tattoos.

You should see the YouTube

Of Ginobli flopping on JR’s in-bounds pass from a few games ago. That was absurd.

Anyone have the link?

Ans, I agree with the post below…generally, the Nuggets don’t flop…the occassional Bird or JR theatrics aside.

They’ve given us Jim Carry, and Mike Myers, and Terrance and Phillip. The ice game with the broom too. And we wouldn’t have labrador retrievers without Labrador you know. The STIFF LIST (as of 7/26 by Nate)

STIFF #1: COLORADO ROCKIES
The Rox have lost eight of their last 10, including six in a row. During the six-game losing streak Colorado has been outscored 33-13 ... and they might soon be the reason by buddy Rory has a massive heart-attack. But there are still 63 games to go and an upcoming eight-game homestand is hopefully just what the team, and Rory, needs to turn things around.

STIFF #2: MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES/DAVID KAHN
Replacing a 24 year-old point guard with a 29 year-old point guard is just a sound NBA move ... uh? Kahn handed Ramon Sessions a 4-year $16 million contract last offseason and just gave the same deal to Luke Ridnour this offseason. In order to make room for Ridnour, Kahn shipped Sessions and young big man Ryan Hollins off to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Delonte West (who is still facing weapons-possession charges). Maybe Ricky Rubio will get to the T-Wolves before Ridnour's contract expires, but don't count on it.

STIFF #3: TRACY MCGRADY
McGrady has been shopping his services this offseason and after getting nibbles from the Lakers, Clippers, and most recently the Bulls ... T-Mac is still without an employer. The 31 year-old guard, with a rich injury history, apparently is not ready to accept a reduced role. Will McGrady's stubborness land him on a lottery team where he'll try to prove he can still be "the man" or will he accept being a role player and wind up in Chicago gunning for that elusive title?

STIFF #4: DANNY AINGE
The Celtics did lose defensive ace Tony Allen to the Memphis Grizzlies, but re-signing Marquis Daniels to a one-year $2.5 million deal is a little crazy. Daniels should be thanking agent Mark Bartelstein ... maybe the rapper can sing his agent a song. (Daniels is in the yellow shirt in the video)

STIFF #5: NUGGETS SLEEPING ON SIZE
The Nuggets decided to bring back Anthony Carter on a one-year $1.3 million deal. Do the Nuggets really need a third point guard heading into training camp over another big body? Check out some names still on the free-agent market: Louis Amundson (yes he'll require more money), Fabricio Oberto, Kwame Brown, Anthony Tolliver, DJ Mbenga, Nathan Jawai, Josh Boone, Kyrylo Fesenko, and Joey Graham. Denver still has the bi-annual exception to spend ... so maybe there is still hope of grabbing somebody.
