Game 24 Preview & Thread: Nuggets vs. Suns (7pm MDT)

Phoenix Suns at Denver Nuggets, Dec 12, 2009 7:00 PM MST

72140_magic_suns_basketball_medium_mediumWhat happens when the two highest scoring teams in the NBA go head-to-head?  The Nuggets win in a snoozer because the Suns will be playing the second of a back-to-back...

Star-divide

I've had the priviledge of seeing every MVP from the past 25-plus years play live - Bird, Magic, MJ, Hakeem, Barkley, Robinson, Malone, Iverson, Duncan, Shaq, Dirk, Kobe, LeBron - except one: the Suns' Steve Nash.  With me splitting my time between Los Angeles and Denver, Nash and I just haven't been in the same place at the same time.  That ends tonight.

Nash has been one of my favorite non-Nuggets over the years.  How could he not be?  He has vastly improved his game over the years, makes the game more fun for the fans and is fiercely loyal, evident by his stupid decision to re-sign with the going-nowhere Phoenix Suns last summer.  I was firmly planted in the Nash-for-MVP camp in 2005-06 and 2006-07 (Nash won in 2004-05 and 05-06, although I thought Shaquille O'Neal deserved it that first year) and wish he was surrounded with better teammates for one more championship run.  Steve Nash is one of the many reasons why I love the NBA.

Unfortunately for me and 15,000 or so other Nuggets fans, however, we're not going to see Nash - or the Suns - at their best.  They played a tough, down-to-the-wire game against the Magic in Phoenix last night, and presumably flew in sometime very early this morning into Denver.  As Nate pointed out in his preview and recap of the Warriors game a few weeks ago, teams traveling east to Denver almost never win (they literally never win, teams coming from the Pacific Time Zone - which Phoenix isn't in - into Denver are 1-18...Nate and I are still checking to see how many years that covers).

Like most games against opponents coming from the west, tonight's game won't be a fair fight for the Suns.  And while it will be nice to see a Nuggets home victory, at the end of the day it's the ticket-paying fan like me who gets screwed with a boring game, like the walkover victory over the Lakers earlier in the season.

But for the first half or so when Nash has some energy, he should be fun to watch.  What about the other Suns?...

Suns Stiffs

-Louis Amundson: If Amundson were on the Nuggets, we'd all love him.  He's from Boulder, he hustles, plays hard, plays tough and frustrates opposing big men into stupid technical fouls.  He's like a bigger, more athletic version of Bill Hanzlik.  But since Amundson plays for the opposition and when we last saw him he baited our own Nene into a stupid head butt (and as a result, a two-game suspension), we're going to boo him mercilessly tonight.

-Channing Frye: At 6'11" and 245 pounds, Frye is a giant of a man.  But while Frye is having a nice rebound season in Phoenix (so would you or I if we played with Steve Nash), he still shoots an abyssmal 44.5% from the field.  Remarkably, Frye shoots almost as well from behind-the-arc (an impressive 43.5%) as he does from the interior...and he takes 5.7 three's per game!  I see a number of Nene breakout layups tonight off Frye bricks...

-Leandro Barbosa: The "Brazilian Blur" (I always thought that meant something else...just ask anyone who's been to Rio) manages to slip more and more with each passing season.  Peaking out at 18.1 ppg four seasons ago, Barbosa's scoring outpit has dipped annually and is down to 11.6, his worst average in six seasons.  Barbosa's been banged up with a sprained ankle and won't be playing tonight.

Suns Non-Stiffs (other than Steve Nash)

-Amar'e Stoudemire: Or as we refer to him in Denver - "the second great player that Kiki Vandeweghe passed over to stupidly draft Nikoloz Tskitishvili".  After showing up in training camp a bit out of shape, Stoudemire is having a fine season, capped off last night with his game-winning offensive rebound and huge slam dunk while the Magic's Dwight Howard was still on the floor.

-Jason Richardson: Richardson seems to have regained some of what made him so lethal in Golden State.  He's also draining three's at an impressive 40.7% clip and is shooting a career second-best 48.5% from the field.

-Grant Hill: Hill's numbers don't wow you and his field goal percentage is down this year, but this guy is still producing.  Who knew that after the all the injuries/recoveries that Hill has had to undergo that he'd still be going strong at 37 years old?  Hill could have gone the Anfernee Hardaway or Steve Francis route, taken his money and called it a career.  But instead, Hill has managed to have a lengthy, more-than-respectable career.  He's anything but a Stiff.

You’re like a TV announcer mentioning that Billups hasn’t missed a free throw or that Orton hasn’t thown a pick in x number of throws. You’re going to get them killed tonight!

LOL...

The Nuggets need to start winning games in which there is no excuse not to win or they’re going nowhere, with or without me jinxing them!

I'd still rather see a blowout

Then we don’t have to worry about losing due to flukey missed dunks, inbounds plays, or “coaching” decisions…

Sheesh, thanks for reminding me of Birdman's

inbound pass and Nene’s handoff pass to Ben Wallace that gave the game to the Pistons.

A "snoozer" is no guarantee if Kenyon is out

The Nuggets have looked pretty mediocre without him the last couple of games. Which is why they should use their trade exception and send Balkman to Indiana for Jeff Foster.

by bennie86 on Dec 12, 2009 10:02 AM MST reply actions

Andrew, do you have any news on K-mart's status?

I think we are going to have a pretty tough time without him, we definitely need D against these Suns.

We should not get into their game and get crazy shots in transition, yes, I’M LOOKING AT YOU, CB!!

"Do not rest in defense. You can spend 24 seconds in offense on resting. If you do good enough on defense, you will be able to rest on offense."

by Lucas Navarrete on Dec 12, 2009 10:07 AM MST reply actions

3 keys for denver

1. transition defense. 2. perimeter defense. 3.execute the half court offense. once upon a time phoenix had 3 point guards- kevin johnson (the current mayor of sacramento), jason kidd and steve nash. nash has one weakness that is defense. denver needs to post him up, work him over and get him in foul trouble. denver takes 3 pointers and jump shots early in the half court offense suns will be off and running. it is critical for denver to follow their shots. suns in the half court offense will pass the ball from side to side until they get a wide open look. denver needs to grind it out on offense and force the suns to use energy and effort on defense. phoenix will try to use their energy running up the score in the first half and sitting on the lead in the second half.

Post play

Channing Frye is starting and Melo is bigger than Grant Hill or Jared Dudley there’s no excuse not to gobble up points in the paint like a fat kid.

by runningdonut on Dec 12, 2009 1:05 PM MST up reply actions

Rather harsh on Frye, wouldn't you say?

The reason his FG% is so low is because he takes so many 3 pointers (which he shoots at a very high percentage, especially for a big). I’m sure if you looked at stats that only considered shots in the paint, his FG% would be 50%+. If only the Nuggets had made a push for this guy during the offseason…

they did... he almost signed here

he chose PHX cuz they give him a player option for a second year and he is from there… boy he would have helped, we also wouldnt have malik allen, cuz the FO got malik right after we missed out on frye

by hvino on Dec 12, 2009 11:44 AM MST up reply actions

I've dreamed of this

Adding Frye would have solved so many problems for this Nugs team. Our bench would have been much better, maybe even stronger than last year. Our 3 point shooting would have drastically improved along with our rebounding and overall size. Man, these are the types of missed signings that can really kick you in the ass.

KObe does this all the time

Remeber that pinky injury that required surgery? Why doesn’t it require surgery anymore. Nothing is hurting for Kobe if his team is winning. He always like to play throught the pain (sarcasm) I wonder what injury he’ll be “playing through” next. He makes up injuries just to show that his “perseverance”

Hope we don’t end up eating crow tonight. I think the Nuggets will win but it starts with defense.

Glad that Kenyon is coming back.

Frye is FAR from a Stiff Andy

The dude is having an incredible season right now, how can you call him out for being a Stiff? So what he shoots 45% from the field? Of all the players that drain more than 2 3’s a game, hes actually among the best in terms of fg%. I guess I’m just ticked off that he’s not a Nugget right now.

As for the game. The Nugs should win this one, but you really never know these days. I mean, we DID drop a game to the incredibly depleted Pistons who were on a back to back, I wouldn’t put losing this game entirely out of the realm of possibility. Still, I will be very happy with a win, but I kind of would like to see these teams to at it with a couple days rest. That would be an exciting game.

by GoldenNugget on Dec 12, 2009 2:10 PM MST reply actions

No doubt

Look at Frye’s numbers and consider he’s signed a $2 mil contract, the guy is one of the best values in all of the NBA. Shooting threes is the Suns game that’s what they want him to do. We missed out big time on Frye, a ton of teams did. An outside shooting big would make the Nuggets a lot better why do you think we mysteriously traded for Malik Allen. Nene couldn’t get it done against Nazr Mohammed and Kwame Brown so to say he’s going to beast Frye well I’m not willing to go that for. Also Stoudemire will be on Nene.

by runningdonut on Dec 12, 2009 2:30 PM MST up reply actions

The Suns

They are still being slept on by the entire basketball community.

I wish I could say the Nuggets were the scrappy overachievers proving the naysayers wrong with hustle. Suns were mysteriously not picked by anyone to make the playoffs and have the same record as the “mighty” Denver Nuggets. I still say if you picked the Suns and Rockets to quietly give up their playoff spots to the Clippers or something you are an idiot. You can call me a pessimist but the Suns should be very confident going into this game – for good reason. From the Nuggets I just want to see a playoff type of effort. The kind the Suns have been giving night in and night out

by runningdonut on Dec 12, 2009 2:42 PM MST reply actions

Living in Phoenix

You can’t not like the Suns. I am a Denver fan, but my internal conflict is that I am not monogamous. I haven’t missed many games (TV) of either team this season and have seen the difference between the two teams. I have never heard anyone say " I hate the Suns" How can you? – they are fun to watch and a very likable team. That is why they will not make it deep into the playoffs, they are not tough enough. Denver is, they don’t take shit from anyone and play without fear. There have been some Suns losses this year when they have admitted that there was a “confidence” problem. Denver losses have been due to mental fatigue or flat out not showing up against weak teams. When you start hearing people say “I can’t stand the Suns” that is when you will know that they finally have a team capable winning it all. I am looking forward to tonight’s contest and agree that the odds are stacked against Phoenix, but remember that they have been surprising people all season long. You never know.

by Magnus Opum on Dec 12, 2009 3:03 PM MST reply actions

Frye's had a nice start this season

But let’s stop riding his jock. He was a bargain because he was considered trash in PDX last year. With Oden hurt, he wasn’t getting hardly any burn even though they had no other reserve big men. His offensive game is a result of playing with Nash, not because he’s a great player. Chauncey is not as much of a drive & kick pg like Nash is so I don’t support the notion that Frye wouldve been a good fit here. Add in the fact that Frye doesn’t play d or rebound well and I’m happy we didn’t land him. Much like Raja Bell or Shawn Marion or Boris Diaw, Frye’s scoring is about Nash’s vision and passing. I’m sure the suns secrectly wish that Frye would give them something on d like Bell, Marion & Diaw did.

by adub on Dec 12, 2009 4:50 PM MST via mobile reply actions

well it wouldn't be a Nuggets blog

without rampant pessimism….It’s a long season guys. We are two games removed from the best start in Nuggets history. Chillax.

As for tonight…Andrew is right. The suns should be tired and with Kenyon playing there should be no reason that the Nuggets can’t win.

NUGGETS WIN

Probably a bad time to bring this up, but perhaps the refs rigged this game? I mean everyone thought the Nuggets were going to win, so when they have their comeback maybe the refs just eased on their whistles a bit to nudge the Nugs along? I don’t really care though since the refs generally don’t call in our favor, so if they were helping us along this one, it slightly levels the playing field among all teams not named the L*kers

The made some crap calls against the Nugs as well

just wasn’t the last play of the game, all evens up in the end though.

The Broncos went through this in 1998. They can this far and then lost to a putrid Giants team. The loss kicked the pressure of going undefeated off their shoulders and allowed them to concentrate on the playoffs and the Super Bowl.

“I should send a video tape in from every time I get the ball” Just saw the replay of that play and actually now think it was a good no-call. Nash put a hand into Nene’s stomach and that was about the only contact on the play.

Wow, what a game

Just got back from The Can and holy crap, that was one hell of a game to be at. I really can’t believe what just happened. It’s hard to comprehend and dissect when your at the game because all your doing it screaming and yelling, hoping for the Nugs to score the next points in the game, where at home you can actually comprehend a bit more what’s going on. All I can really say is the refs were horrendous for both sides, Nash had one hell of a game, and the Nuggets SHOULD have lost that game. I don’t care how pessimistic you think I am being, we played like crap for 90% of that game, and luckily for the first time all season our defense actually came through and won us a game, incidentally the catalyst seemed to be AC. Can’t wait to see what everyone has to say about that in the coming days.

who cares who DESERVED to win, the bottom line is Denver did win. Crap, its a 48 minute game and its not how you start but how you finish. The overall negative vibe here is disconcerting. I want denver to be awesome every game but its not gonna happen. 17-7 is good. The bottom line is where they are in May

by jpage78 on Dec 12, 2009 10:48 PM MST up reply actions

and how exactly did the nuggets "deserve" to lose?

They allowed Phoenix only 39 points the second half. I’d say that’s game winning defense.

by jpage78 on Dec 12, 2009 10:49 PM MST reply actions

That defense STILL doesn't make up for the way we played in the first half

I mean, I guess technically it did since we won. But we played so absolutely horrendous in the first half I thought there was no chance we would win. I entirely give the Nugs credit though for winning the right way, by playing solid defense. But we just can’t continue to play like we did in the first half if we want to win the division this year. That kind of play will cost you games and we’re lucky we somehow turned it on. Who knows, maybe it was Biz Markie at halftime :)

by GoldenNugget on Dec 12, 2009 10:54 PM MST up reply actions

This was the difference

43 free throws to Suns 28. That’s a game called like Lakers home game. I credit the Nuggets second half defense but they DID NOT play well
