Game 7 Preview and Thread: Nuggets at Hawks (5pm MDT)

Josh_smith_mediumThe Nuggets and Hawks are both coming off losses last night and both losses eerily familiar ... don't believe me? Follow the jump and take a peek, if you dare! (Sorry, still in Halloween mode apparently.)

Star-divide

Records:
Denver: 5-1 (Key wins: vs. Blazers and Jazz ... loss at Heat)
Atlanta: 4-2 (Key wins: vs. Wizards and at Portland ... losses at Lakers and Bobcats)
Time and TV: Game starts at 5:00 p.m. Mountain and can be seen on NBA TV or Altitude
Injuries: Denver - Joey Graham: day-to-day (sprained toe), Kenyon Martin (left leg contusion) wont play
Atlanta - Jason Collins: day-to-day (ankle)

The J.R. Smith countdown ... 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. Smith will be returning to action in Chicago.

I'm going to give you a few excerpts from a game last night, let's see if you can figure out if I'm taking these passages from the Nuggets game or the Hawks game ...

For a night, the roles were reversed. The low-scoring ______ were suddenly efficient on offense, while the high-scoring _____ turned in a stinker ...

and some more ...

"I don't know when we all of a sudden just really became a selfish team," ______ said. "Now everybody wants to go one-on-one. It's me, me, me. It's crazy, man."

Those excerpts are from the Hawks vs. Bobcats game last night and the quote is from Hawks guard Joe Johnson. But I'm telling you ... Atlanta and Denver played very similar games last night. That is why tonight's game can be a very nice turnaround game for one of these teams. I'm guessing that the team that decides to play unselfish will come away with the win.

In Denver's five wins this season they posted team assist numbers of: 22 vs. the Jazz, 11 vs. the Blazers, 36 vs. the Grizzlies, 18 vs. the Pacers and 25 vs. the Nets.

In Denver's lone loss, last night, the Nuggets combined for just 10 total assists.

Looking at the numbers above, Denver struggled in two games this season: on the road in Portland and last night in Miami. In each of those games the Nuggets posted their lowest assist totals. Basketball is a game that's all about getting the best available shot aka the easiest shot that gives you the best chance to make a basket. Things go a lot better for the Nuggets when they share the ball and we should know early if Denver is going to play unselfish basketball.

The Nuggets also must find a way to control the boards tonight and that task will be very difficult with K-Mart watching from the bench or locker room. We've seen Martin miss time before and last season when he was out George Karl turned to Renaldo Balkman. Seems pretty odd right? Balkman goes from not being able to get off the bench to potential starter. Balkman came in last night and logged 6 points (2-3 shooting) and 6 rebounds in 15 minutes and started the second half in K-Mart's absence.

I was just glancing at the box score of the Hawks vs. Bobcats game and had to do a double-take on Joe Smith's minutes ... he started, but only played 6 minutes. I thought maybe the game was waaaaay to familiar with both starting power forwards getting injured, but alas Smith plays limited minutes a la Dahntay Jones to make way for Josh Smith off the bench a la J.R. Smith.

Thankfully, the Hawks are a bit undersized overall themselves so a rotation of Balkman, Nene, Andersen, and Graham should be able to bang down low. Although the Hawks have Joe Smith 6'10'', Al Horford 6'10'', Zaza Pachulia 6'11'', and Josh Smith 6'9'' to throw at the Nuggets.

And when Joe Johnson was talking about his team playing a bit selfish ... it's not a big surprise when you consider they have a lot of offensive weapons in Johnson, Horford, Josh Smith, Mike Bibby (always likes to light the Nuggets up), Marvin Williams, Jamal Crawford, Maurice Evans, and rookie point guard Jeff Teague.

I'm excited to hopefully get to see Teague play. The rookie out of Wake Forest was drafted one spot behind Ty Lawson at 19th overall and his playing time has been all over the board (although he averages about 13 minutes per game). Teague has a lot of talent and I was hoping that if the Nuggets didn't get Lawson that they'd be able to get Teague ... it's always fun to watch guys play who you were thinking might end up with the team you follow.

Denver has to find a find a way to play unselfish and Melo must look to get his teammates involved. Along with trying to play unselfish the Nuggets are down another offensive weapon and some of the role players must step up tonight and take the load off Melo and Billups. I don't know who is going to step up tonight, but Denver could use an unfamiliar face to have a career night. One team will get right and earn a win, let's hope it's the Nuggets.

Is it too much to hope?

Is it too much to hope that Afflalo will get the start with Balkman?
Why do I fear that GK will rear his ugly head and use a starting lineup of CB/AC/Melo/Nene/Petro?
Don’t scoff, he’s more inclined than you think.
That said, I would much rather see a lineup of CB/AA/Melo/Crimestopper/Nene. That way Balkman’s limited offensive potential is evened out by Afflalo’s ability to shoot the 3 and drive the ball, not to mention that he is a stronger defender than AC.
I cringe to think of how the defense will come out if the Nuggets start AC and Balkman or AC and Petro. Can you see the weak-side sag already? 17 points in the first quarter.

oddly optimistic

I think as a fan, as weird as this sounds, its better when your team experiences a loss the way the Nuggets, and Broncos, did. It releases this pressure of “how far can they go without losing?” or “tonite they put their perfect season on the line!” I feel like the Nuggs are going to come out and play hard fast and with teamwork. If anything, this is the first early ‘bounce back test’…. I feel good about our nuggs.
Also, isnt it funny that not 24 hours ago, the Nuggets were considered the second best team in the west by some and after last night they are “pretenders” according to the “experts”. drives me crazy….

Great preview

Both teams are coming off deflating road losses last night. It’s pretty horrifying how we lost though, clearly we had the talent to win that game but didn’t get to see it until George Karl had already given up. ATL is returning home and Denver is in the midst of a long road trip with injuries piling up. The Hawks have super athletic bodies to throw at Melo and good shooters, plus GK’s coaching and Anthony Carter to beat the Nuggets with. The wildcard will be a stellar game from Renaldo or Birdman, but Mike Woodson will almost certainly make better adjustments from last nights play and they are at home. It’s alright tho, JR is coming back soon and we will have another weapon available against Karl, AC, and whoever we have to play that night. I’m in a surprisingly good mood after the Buffs win, but right now I just can’t see the Nugs any different after that mutiny on George Karl last night.

Agreed- but they have to keep it manageable.

We literally sleepwalked most of that half. Nene can be so annoying- it always takes him a while to get into it.

by Verbal Kint on Nov 7, 2009 6:18 PM MST reply actions

Nene reminds me of oden sometimes, just kind of moping around looking for sympathy because he got a foul called or something.

by CCH on Nov 7, 2009 6:26 PM MST up reply actions

Nene's better offensively

But I get your point. All we need is NeneMartin and another good big…

We really need to get our shit together...

regroup in these next couple days. Get Kenyon and JR back in. Also more Lawson please!

Carlos Gonzalez is amazing.

Not the End of the World, But...

5-2 is not a bad way to go with JR out, but I don’t like how they have have played against the two good teams on this road trip (Miami and Atlanta). Lack of effort on defense and poor team offense is not something we saw a lot of last year. It’s a long season. .. .

by ACEIII on Nov 7, 2009 6:56 PM MST reply actions

we should just start Lawson and Afflalo.

bench melo and CB1 for a few games. they need to get their heads out of their asses.

by 808inDenver on Nov 7, 2009 6:56 PM MST reply actions

Agree

Seriously, don’t bench them but put both a a shorter leash. They have responded so poorly to falling behind behind it’s killed us. Just take them out mid first quarter if they are slacking, like when Balkman and Joey went out

by runningdonut on Nov 7, 2009 7:04 PM MST up reply actions

Missing Dahntay and Kleiza just a Tad

They (and JR) helped keep the Nuggs in more than a few games like this last year…

by ACEIII on Nov 7, 2009 7:01 PM MST reply actions

Maybe Dahntay

But no way on LK. Except for a game here or there, he was a walking catastrophe last season.

I'm most disappointed in billups

he normally is the one that can sense the game get out of hand and hit a big shot to swing momentum. that was one of his greatest strengths. he could sense when we would go into jumpshot mode and fall behind and he would stop it with a smart penetration or a big shot. not seeing that this year and its concerning

by skithebert on Nov 7, 2009 7:34 PM MST reply actions

I'm most disappointed in CARMELO

Well, hubla dupla he gets praised the first 2 games, then he turns into a little motherfuckinng ballhog that does nothing good for the team. FUCK MELO trade him for a center UN FUCKING BELIEVABLE

by nuggetsfan on Nov 7, 2009 7:36 PM MST reply actions

Lots of standing around on offense.

Period. No sharing the ball. Lots of one on one. Lots of attempted layups by Nene and not dunks. Interesting calls by refs…this game had nothing to do with what we shouldve done in the offseason…we coulda beat these guys (apparently all named Smith) and we didn’t. Period. lazy one on one basketball will never get it done.

You guys call yourselves fans?

Are you serious, last time I checked we have only lost two games, one of which we were missing two of our best players. God the fairweather fans on here are pathetic. Go root for the Lakers, we don’t need a bunch of fans who will throw their team under the bus the minute they struggle. I’m ashamed to be associated with the likes of most people on this board

by Zachm219 on Nov 7, 2009 8:55 PM MST reply actions

It's the way you lose

That’s more frustrating than anything. Yes a lot of us have been real negative probably overreacting because we knew the team was not playing great and didn’t approach winning like they should. I can take this loss it’s a tough team but to not even compete in the last 2 winnable games shouldn’t happen. It sucks to hit a bump in the road and not be able to find any answers because the driver doesn’t know what he’s doing, and has his bald gay lover on top of him so he can’t see the road

I'm new to this blog

but always been a fan of the nuggets since the days of Abdul-Rauf (Jackson) and Mutumbo. I gotta say I’m really disappointed with many of the comments and posters on here. I realize they have not played well the last two games and there is plenty to be critical about. However the straight vitriol I see so-called fans spewing at their own team is just depressing. I thought this would be a place to come and talk objectively about the nuggets. However I’ve seen nothing but what seem to be a bunch of kids who just learned how to curse, running their collective mouths. I’m sure there a plenty of fans who do not act this way on here but unfortunately they get drowned out. This blog could learn something from MHR, which from what I can tell is one of the best online sports websites I’ve come across. I hope to see this become more like MHR in both a community sense and as a legitimate news source.

Not all of us are like this

Just the dopes who probably didn’t start watching the nuggets until we got Melo. However do take note that you won’t find anything coming from Nate or Andrew. I joined this blog because Andrew is a quality writer who knows his Nuggets, probably better then anyone I know. When Nate got absolved into the blog I wasn’t sure what to think because i had never read his blog, but he has proved equally adept at writing on our team. So don’t get discouraged by the comments. You just have to look at it like espn.com. A lot of good columinsts there (and some real morons too) but there are still plenty of idiots roaming the comment boards who you just have to ignore/laugh at/occasionally reprimand

STIFF LIST (as of 1/30 by Jeff Morton)

1. THE ORLANDO MAGIC
After starting the season so well with the Dwight Howard trade drama (10-3) - the Magic have fallen apart (2-5 since) with embarrassing losses to the Celtics (twice), Hornets, and Pacers. Trade Dwight already!

2. CHAUNCEY BILLUPS' FLOP VS. NUGGETS
In the waning seconds of Sunday's game against the Clippers, Chauncey pulled off an acting performance so good it deserved an Academy Award. If he was still a Nugget we would love it, but he's not. STIFF!

3. JIMMER FREDETTE
Dude, if you are going to take the game-winning shot, at least draw some iron: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mNO1goJOruQ

4. GEORGE KARL'S 4TH QUARTER AGAINST THE CLIPPERS
Getting out coached by Vinny Del Negro should be a nice wake-up call. Going away from Gallo. Leaving Al Harrington in. Using Rudy Fernandez at point guard. And going ultra small contributed to the Nuggets loss.

5. JEFF MORTON
For saying that the Nuggets would skimp on payroll and go cheap like the Avalanche. Clearly I was wrong and deserve to be on this Stiff List. I can only hope that the gods of basketball forgive me.
