Denver adds injury to insult, kicks pups (Nuggets/T-Wolves recap)

Nene_vs_wolves_mediumThe Nuggets are back on track against sub .500 teams by winning their last two contests in encouraging fashion. The Nuggets took the will out of the Timberwolves early and that's exactly how you need to handle teams that on paper you should be drubbing.

Star-divide

Nene has quietly been playing some very good basketball. A lot of talk around the Nuggets centers around Melo, Billups and Ty Lawson, but a somewhat forgotten man has been Nene. Going into tonight's game the Brazilian was averaging 14.4 points, 9.1 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1 block.

In Nene's last five games he's averaging 16.2 pts, 9.3 reb, 3.2 ast and 1.3 blks. Tonight Nene had a very impressive stat line of 17 pts, 8 reb, 6 ast and 3 blks in just 24 minutes of action. Like the rest of the starters (sans Double-A) Nene was only used for three quarters as the Nuggets basically ended the game after the third quarter up 102-79.

Nene has looked extremely aggressive this season attacking the rim, especially of late as he has been spending more time on the rim than a guy who eats nothing but enchiladas. The team has been playing some nice team basketball and Melo has been enjoying feeding the bigs with some pretty passing that is resulting in very easy looks for the big men.

Denver has been giving up some points like they did tonight, but the Wolves were not getting a lot of easy buckets. Instead, Minnesota enjoyed some hot shooting from Ryan Hollins and Corey Brewer and they virtually kept the Wolves in the game ... to a degree.

When Denver's bigs get involved on the offensive end it just opens up so many things for the team. Billups enjoyed some wide open looks from deep and capitalized on those looks by scoring 12 straight points to end the third quarter (3-3 from deep and 3-3 from the free throw line as he was fouled on another three ball).

The Nuggets improved to 11-4 with their 124-111 victory and earned their 10th straight win over the T-Wolves. All the Denver starters scored in double-figures tonight and Bird and Swish added some nice points off the bench with 15 and 14 respectively.

This was yet another win that Denver was supposed to win on paper. The fashion in which they won it should give fans some comfort as the team never let the Wolves into the game.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone ... we'll see y'all on Friday for some more Nuggets action.

 Random notes:

  • The Nuggets are now 2-1 while wearing their navy blue alternate uniforms. I wonder what their record would be in the Rainbow throwbacks? Sadly, we will not find out this season.
  • Arron Afflalo has been wearing the classic Adidas Superstar shoes at this year, but since the game was not broadcast in HD I could not tell what kind of black sneakers he was wearing tonight. It's my theory that Double-A might be even better in some better shoes ... Melo needs to hook him up with some Jumpman kicks.
  • Nathan Jawai is a BIG BOY. We are talking soon to be Oliver Miller big. (Click the link to see what I'm talking about.)

Melo to Nene = easy baskets

While I am grumpy about the bench not closing it out in the 4th quarter, I was very impressed with Melo’s passing tonight. His finding the athletic and ambidextrous Nene for easy points in the lane the last couple of games has been a joy to watch. I love Melo getting the rest of the team involved.

While I love Ty Lawson, I think he’s been a little sloppy with the ball lately. Needs to be said.

Also: Welcome back, Andersen. You’re starting to look like your old self.

nene and critisim

Maybe I have been too critical of nene. i have often said that he becomes intimidated against strong centers and strong teams. Maybe I am right – maybe not. This will have to play out as the season unfolds. My question is will he continue on with the high numbers playing tougher teams?

Nonetheless 16.2 pts, 9.3 reb, 3.2 ast and 1.3 blks are some serious numbers.

IMO, it should open up a new facet to his game. Idk if he’s has already, but he needs to realize that every time he develops a new offensive ability, defenses will collapse and focus on him more and more, which’ll leave his teammates more and more wide open.
This isn’t like the Cavs and Lebron, where he had no supporting cast so when he dished out, his players couldn’t back him up. We’ve got plenty of other guys, and I’m really optimistic about what this means for our overall success. Melo is already showing flashes of what could happen with his developing his game…tbh, I, for one, had no idea Melo was such a good, smart, solid passer.

But

He won’t be. He gets a pass from these people because he’s suppose to be only a backup pg. When in fact he wouldn’t make a backup to a backup in the D leauge.
I don’’t know what to say about GK in that he played AC but he didn’t play Petro. Petro is the one who needs minutes. Rest Kmart,Nene, and Bird.
Instances like this is where GK ‘s logic is questioned If he wasn’t any good (Petro) then why the hell did the Nuggets sign him?

Petro wasn’t suited up against the Nets was he? I haven’t heard anything about his situation. I guess he’s too unimportant for his status to be news.

Nathan Jawai

He IS a big boy. But watch him run the floor. He’ll surprise you. And you’d think gravity wouldn’t be so kind to him… but he gets up! Gotta support the fellow Aussie!

He reminds

me of Big Baby Davis.
You think because the C’s don’t have BBD that’s one of the reasons why they are struggling a little?

Nene

Excited to see stats that Nene is leading the league in DUNKS.
The last couple of games I’ve seen too many one man runs to the basket from Billups and Lawson returning me to the old days. We need to continue to play “team” ball as we have a complete team and can do great things with that mentality.

rainbow throwbacks

Oh man I would love to see them wear those, my favorite jerseys of any pro sports team ever. Have the Nugs ever even discussed wearing them?

by sleepydog on Nov 26, 2009 9:49 AM MST reply actions

I think the reason Nene isn’t getting the love that he should is that people have expected this from him all along. It’s easy to think that with a body like his that he should have been even better.

The STIFF LIST (as of 7/26 by Nate)

STIFF #1: COLORADO ROCKIES
The Rox have lost eight of their last 10, including six in a row. During the six-game losing streak Colorado has been outscored 33-13 ... and they might soon be the reason by buddy Rory has a massive heart-attack. But there are still 63 games to go and an upcoming eight-game homestand is hopefully just what the team, and Rory, needs to turn things around.

STIFF #2: MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES/DAVID KAHN
Replacing a 24 year-old point guard with a 29 year-old point guard is just a sound NBA move ... uh? Kahn handed Ramon Sessions a 4-year $16 million contract last offseason and just gave the same deal to Luke Ridnour this offseason. In order to make room for Ridnour, Kahn shipped Sessions and young big man Ryan Hollins off to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Delonte West (who is still facing weapons-possession charges). Maybe Ricky Rubio will get to the T-Wolves before Ridnour's contract expires, but don't count on it.

STIFF #3: TRACY MCGRADY
McGrady has been shopping his services this offseason and after getting nibbles from the Lakers, Clippers, and most recently the Bulls ... T-Mac is still without an employer. The 31 year-old guard, with a rich injury history, apparently is not ready to accept a reduced role. Will McGrady's stubborness land him on a lottery team where he'll try to prove he can still be "the man" or will he accept being a role player and wind up in Chicago gunning for that elusive title?

STIFF #4: DANNY AINGE
The Celtics did lose defensive ace Tony Allen to the Memphis Grizzlies, but re-signing Marquis Daniels to a one-year $2.5 million deal is a little crazy. Daniels should be thanking agent Mark Bartelstein ... maybe the rapper can sing his agent a song. (Daniels is in the yellow shirt in the video)

STIFF #5: NUGGETS SLEEPING ON SIZE
The Nuggets decided to bring back Anthony Carter on a one-year $1.3 million deal. Do the Nuggets really need a third point guard heading into training camp over another big body? Check out some names still on the free-agent market: Louis Amundson (yes he'll require more money), Fabricio Oberto, Kwame Brown, Anthony Tolliver, DJ Mbenga, Nathan Jawai, Josh Boone, Kyrylo Fesenko, and Joey Graham. Denver still has the bi-annual exception to spend ... so maybe there is still hope of grabbing somebody.
