Game 10 Preview & Thread: Lakers at Nuggets (8:30pm MDT)

Los Angeles Lakers at Denver Nuggets, Nov 13, 2009 8:30 PM MST

64608_los_angeles_lakers_v_denver_nuggets__game_6_medium_mediumThe Nuggets passed their first true test of the young season by winning at Portland in Game 2.  Test #2 takes place tonight, and it's another big one.

Star-divide

It certainly would have helped had Phoenix given the Lakers a fight last night before the Lakers had to board their late night plane to Denver.  Remember, the worst back-to-back in the NBA is when you play the 8:30pm Thursday night TNT game...which always starts late...then have to go on the road to a boisterous, packed arena in a small market the following night.  Throw in this being Denver at 5,280 feet above sea level and the Lakers being without Nugget-killer Pau Gasol, and the Nuggets have no excuse not to win tonight.  The Nuggets won't get a more favorable situation to best the Lakers than this.

But's its a big test nonetheless when the world champs - who crushed the Nuggets in the final six quarters of the conference finals after being outplayed or played even in the first 18 quarters of the series - come to town.  The Nuggets must avenge that bitter Game 6 home loss beginning tonight.

There's an X-factor tonight though that throws a wrinkle into an already heated affair: Ron Artest.  In Carmelo Anthony's last eight matchups with Ron Ron (three while Artest was with the Rockets and five with the Kings), Melo has shot 8-for-21, 8-for-19, 1-for-4 (Melo left the game early due to his elbow injury), 11-for-21, 5-for-16, 10-for-20, 11-for-24 and 7-for-25.  And now that he plays with the likes of Kobe Bryant, Lamar Odom and Andrew Bynum, Artest can focus on the defensive end of the floor even more.  Hence why I always liked the signing of Artest for the Lakers (remember, Melo would just waltz over Trevor Ariza last season).  He's like their Melo Insurance Policy.  Moreoever, Artest hardly exerted himself last night, playing just 28 minutes in the Lakers walkover victory against the Suns.

When pundits like Reggie Miller predicted that the Lakers would go 20-1 through their first 21 games thanks to an absurdly favorable early season schedule, that one loss was assumed to be tonight.  I believe the Nuggets will win, but have learned to assume nothing when playing the Lakers after witnessing what happened in the postseason.  The Nuggets were clearly the better team in that series for those first 18 quarters, but suddenly, abruptly and startlingly Kobe, Lamar and Gasol came alive and the Nuggets were toast.  At least we only have to worry about two of the three tonight.

The game plan for beating the Lakers - especially with Gasol out - remains the same: pound it inside, get Bynum into early foul trouble, let Kobe exhaust himself into a 40-point night if necessary and don't let Odom or Artest beat you offensively.  I'm excited to see Ty Lawson in particular play tonight because the Lakers historically have fits with small, quick guards (although the addition of Shannon Brown has helped them somewhat there).

Lakers Stiffs

-Lamar Odom: Shooting a career second-worst 42.7% from the field and averaging a career low 10.3 ppg despite playing seven minutes per game more than last season.  You know how sitcoms always suck after someone gets married?  Maybe the same is happening to Lamar's career.

-Derek Fisher: Shooting a career second-worst 31.8% from three-point range, which just means he'll miss two wide open three's early in the game and then make the one clutch three the Lakers have to have.

-Jordan Farmar: Farmar seems to have been supplanted by Brown as the Lakers go-to backup point guard.  Shooting a career worst 31.6% from the field in a contract year isn't helping either.

Lakers Non-Stiffs

-Kobe Bryant: I hate the guy but he's carrying my fantasy team right now and is only getting better with age.  With Artest on board, Bryant can take it easier on defense which makes him that much more lethal offensively, evidenced by him having three 40-plus point games already.  Like I wrote at the time, it's just not fair that the Lakers got Artest.

-Andrew Bynum: Now in his fifth season, Bynum is averaging 21 ppg and 11.3 rpg in Gasol's absence.  Oh, and he just turned 22.  Again, not fair.

-Ron Arest: The aforementioned Artest brings a new dynamic to the Lakers.  He makes them tougher, more pesky and saves Kobe and Lamar much needed energy.  Did I mention having Ron Artest on the Lakers just isn't fair?

On a side note, if you're going to the game tonight and want to meet up drop me an email!

Kenyon/Ron-ron is going to be a GREAT matchup.

I just hope one/both of them don’t lose their heads.

Who do you put on Kobe, Andrew? Afflalo? Kenyon? JR?

Personally, I vote for Afflalo, he’s our stoutest defender and though he gives up some size he has the speed and has very quick hands (like Kenyon). Kenyon is then free to body up Artest/Mbenga/Powell as necessary.

I think this game is decided on bench v. bench. If JR can outshoot brown, Bird can outboard Odom, Lawson can outrun Farmar, and Joey Graham just puts his fist through Vujacic’s face (cmon, Graham, take one for the team), then the Nugs will win.

I know I should be better than this but

How come when the Lakers come to town I secretly want it turn ugly…like a bar fight? With punches thrown and everything?
Maybe cuz Kobe essentially “steals the Nuggets girl” EVERYTIME?
Come on Nuggets!!! Let’s push these guys around a little. Punch ’em in the mouth.

Hey ANDREW! What do YOU think the nuggets will be (record wise) at the end of OUR first 22 games? How much ground are we gonna have to make up, and how much do you think this game will truly tell us how we match up with these guys?

Melo

I think Afflalo will be guarding a fair amount, but I want to see Melo take him on. I like it when Melo accepts the challenge and really gets into defending a player. I think the attitude rubs off and everyone on the team steps it up. Melo’s not going to shut him down, no one is, but he can set the tone.

Laker fan, here.

Couple of things to keep an eye on:

1. The Lakers are one of the better offensive rebounding teams so far; nevertheless they have the worse defensive rebound rate in the league. I know Chauncey loves to take those backbreaking 3s immediately after a teammate secures an offensive rebound, and I expect a lot of those tonight.

2. I’ve been watching Kobe since his rookie year, and his play this year is the most efficient he’s ever been. It looks like he expends a lot of energy getting post position, so his defenders will need to be very physical while they’re in there, and accept that Kobe is going to get some calls. The Nugs are equipped to wear him out because they’ve got several big guards in the fold, but they’ve got to keep their cool and not get too emotional.

3. IMHO, the best bench player for LA has been PF Josh Powell. He’s playing within himself, but at the same time he’s become a decisive and confident shooter all the way out to 3pt range. Worst player has been Vujacic: he isn’t working within the framework of the offense. Instead of spacing the floor like a good spot up shooter, he’s taken to dribbling into traffic and taking ill-advised jumpers.

4. Artest has not been shooting very well, but he has been a very good triangle and intangibles guy. His defense has been stellar. LA has been holding opposing SFs to a PER of 9.3, and I’m pretty sure Luke Walton’s defense has almost nothing to do with that.

5. Bynum’s fitness has been pretty good this season, but how he performs tonight ought to be a good indication of the kind of shape he’s in. I don’t think the NUGS can afford to get into foul trouble, but at the same time it’ll cost them if they don’t use their physicality to keep him out of the paint. Having Nene go right at him on the offensive end is a smart move, because it’s not like the Lakers can afford for Bynum to get into foul trouble, either. Critical matchup.

6. The Lakers have been playing a more deliberate style of basketball. There’s been less improvisation by Kobe, more purposeful movement and passing, more focus on exploiting favorable match-ups. Defensively, things have been kind of helter-skelter. I haven’t been too pleased with Kobe, who I feel is gambling too much. There have been defensive breakdowns here and there, and while the Lakers have done well enough to get out and challenge shots, they’re finding themselves out of position to rebound the basketball and punctuate a defensive stop.

Does Kobe still have the flu?

Or what ailment or adversity will he choose to “play through” tonite.
Also, I’ll say it as a representative of the less mature fans on this site who think it’s a little wierd to be discussing, rationally, with a lakers fan about the strengths and weaknesses of the lakers: GO BACK TO A LAKERS WEBSITE AND BASQUE IN THE GLORY THAT IS THE EASIEST EARLY SEASON SCHEDULE IN THE HISTORY OF THE LEAGUE AND LEAVE US ALONE! I wouldve personally attacked your team or coach or even you, but I’d get in trouble so I’ll just say:
Personal attack, you, Lakers fan!

The death of sportsmanship...

With 4 minutes left in the 3rd and the Lakers CRUSHING the Suns by 23, the beloved World Champion Lakers slowed the triangle offense down and took high percentage shots…

Wait a second! No they didn’t. They shot 3-pointer after 3-pointer after 3-pointer?!? 5 of the last 7 possessions in the 3rd were 3-point attempts. I stopped counting how many times the Lakers shot 3s at the top of the shot-clock in the 4th but it was a ridiculous number. Did the Zen Master feel that his lead was in jeopardy? Nope. He was trying to send a message to the league’s best 3 point shooting team that HIS team was actually better. The problem is that the message that he actually sent was that he and his team were happy and even proud to stick a mega-phone over the last, death gasp of NBA sportsmanship and that they will do it again and again and again…

Shame on you Lakers. Shame on you Zen Master. Shame on you Lakers fan.

I hope the Nuggets pummel you tonight through 3 and then slow the game down, put in our garbage time players and win the way NBA teams are supposed to win; with respect for the other professionals on the court.

What

There’s nothing wrong with trotting the scrubs out late and letting them run. Last year in the playoffs, the Nugs won a game in New Orleans by the first quarter and never let up, they won 58. It was awesome and pretty much sent that franchise into a tailspin.

It’s not like Phil left Kobe out there and tried to get him to drop 50 on them. LOL, chill out a bit man

Playoffs...

We crushed New Orleans IN THE PLAYOFFS!?! We knew we’d be playing them less than 48 hours later and wanted to crush their spirit (which we did.) That question and Karl’s integrity and sportsmanship were discussed ad nauseum the following day and MOST of the pundits said what I am saying: in a playoff series it is forward looking strategy to leave your boot on the opponent’s neck. In the regular season (much less a few games in,) it is unsportsmanlike arrogance and is uncalled for.

Mrs. Lamar Odom...

I gotta agree with SternFluffsKobe on this one. We don’t post on your fan site and, no matter how cordial and diplomatic you are, you shouldn’t post on ours. It’s disengenuous. PLUS, I saw the 338 posts on your fansite about Lamar Odom’s reality show bride and wanted you to know that – with only a few exceptions – this site actually discusses basketball…

Artest

I’m actually upset he hasn’t asserted himself more on offense and ballhogged some of the chemistry out of last years team. I haven’t watched any Laker games except the Houston one where he completely dismantled Ariza, so I guess he’s doing his job. But helping him out has been Melo’s terrible play of late. He’s struggled shooting and defensively he’s getting beat on the regular. I honestly hope he takes less than 20 shots tonight, which is almost guaranteed to not happen. Right now he’s inefficient regardless of who’s guarding him.

Oh yeah and pay no attention to the internet tough guys trying to start shit on here.

"internet tough guys?"

It is clear that YOU are the internet tough gut attempting to police good natured banter between a few of us and Laker Fan. Why? Why do you care? I get that some of you on this site have a weird man crush on Kobe, Phil and the Champs. I get it. But, you probably need to respect the fact that some of us HATE the Lakers, HATE Kobe and, ultimately, HATE anything and everything that stands in the way of a Nuggets championship. “Fan” is short for “fanatical.” Remember? Just because you are not fanatical about the Nuggets doesn’t mean that we can’t be.

Runningdonut: have you posted on the Lakers’ site? Why not? I’ll tell you why not – because it’s sort of pointless and because if Laker fan wants to know what you think, he’ll read posts on THIS site. I read posts on their site all the time for insight, I just don’t post anything…

I just don’t mind if a fan comes over to shed some insight into the matchup or have some decent conversation. It’s a lot better than seeing Nugget fan’s trash talking each other. Sort of like pre-season football … you beat up on your teammates for a few weeks so finally when you get a chance to smack somebody else it’s nice.

I like arguing with fans of other teams. (Fair minded ones.)

I apologize.

I think the in-fighting on this site is stupid and I’m sorry I’m involved. Even so, like SternFluffsKobe (hilarious nickname by the way,) all of the starfucking gets under my skin. If I want to read about how great Kobe is, I’ll plug into the fucking national media machine. On top of that, I certainly don’t need some vanilla school report from the opposition about shit that anyone who has watched even a minute of a Lakers’ game already knows. Yeah, yeah I know: Bitter much? YES I AM! I’m not even a little bit over the WCF loss last year or the fact that the fucking Lakers got Gasol for a song. So when Lakers’ fan straggles over here, he better be ready for some bitter, bitter venom. Is that completely irrational and ridiculous?

Practice doesn't make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect.

The guy just came in to give us a scouting report. He wasn’t trash talking really whatsoever. Spaz out much? LOL

ignign*kt, thanks for the thoughts on your squad. I wasn’t really up on Josh Powell like that. I’ll keep an eye on him.

And for the record, I think we have issues that haven’t been fixed yet. As infuriating as it will still be if it happens, I suspect we lose this one. Just being real. I haven’t seen us change from the lull that we’ve been in since midway thru this past road trip and the Lakers are going to come ready to play. Pessimist? Maybe but I’m just going off what my gambling instinct in me tells me.

Remember February?

Last year the Nugs beat the Lakers in Denver in an ugly, defensive dogfight where both teams shot terribly. That’s the key to winning, defensive intensity and toughness.

If anything, the Suns game confirms why the Lakers are hard to beat. Teams that think they can outrun them with offensive flash get punched square in the mouth. They can win a high scoring game almost without breaking a sweat, so the key is to challenge them on D

by runningdonut on Nov 13, 2009 12:13 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Stop Being Selfish

Key tonight will be getting back to TEAM ball. Seems every since the hot start, MVP/Scoring title talk that Nuggs have been playing 1on1 bball. They run down throw it to Melo while 4 stand and watch. Melo then tries to take a tough contested shot playing 1on3. Play as a team. GO NUGGS

Nuggets are going to win by 8 in a game where J.R. drops 31. Gotta be correct. Plus, the Nuggets are 2-0 when I’ve gone to the game live in the Pepsi Center. Those are two irrefutable facts for a Nuggets victory!

Defending Kobe

Kobe’s playing so much in the post this year, is AA the right match up?

He was throwing Richardson around like a rag doll last night (I had to switch off after 3, couldn’t stand to see them clock up an easy win), maybe a bigger match up would be better.

I’m thinking Graham, or perhaps Balkman or even K-Mart who’d be the strongest and have more length to contest shots.
If Kobe then stepped out to utilize his speed advantage, at least we’d be forcing them out of what they want to do, he’d have to work harder and the shots wouldn’t be as easy.

See, that’s why Kobe impresses me. I hate Kobe, hate him. Yet I respect him so much as a player becuase of his hard work. Of course he has the natural talent and ability, but he truly wants to be the best and works as hard as he can, and I respect that. Oh, and he is still the best player in the NBA.

Let JR and Chauncey get the scoring done and Melo just follows around Kobe like a lost puppy. He manhandled him last year, I don’t see why he can’t do that tonight.

I think Graham should play too

But, Aflac is more than capable. From what I have watched so far I think he is our best perimeter defender and deserving of more minutes since the first game. Either way, Kobe is Kobe, we need more than 1 guy to defend him. The guy I’m watching is Bynum. He didn’t do much in the playoffs last year but the way we have played this year, I think he could have a 20/20 game if we don’t get him off the floor. Bird and Nene need to step up their game to get this win

Rebounding, Defence and TEAM Ball

Are what Boy George should be preaching before the game. If we don’t do any of those well, wich we havn’t lately, we are screwed…hard.

Defending Kobe: Like j-mac mentioned, we have tons of solid defenders on this team, and the best thing is our very best defenders are all capable of guarding Kobe (K-Mart, Balkman & Afflalo). I wouldn’t mind seeing Melo try and defend him but I think he’s gonna have his hands full with Artest alone. (Side note: Andy, are you sure those percentages are even because Artest was guarding him? Those seem pretty normal for Melo the past few years.) But, as far as I can see, Balkman should be assigned Kobe, just like Artest will be Melo. Balkman is a great defender in this league and we should be using him in these types of scenarios. It seems pointless not to.

Anyways, as dissapointed as I have been with the Nugs play and effort thus far. I expect they will come out ready to play tonight. I am still predicting a Lakers win (Why wouldn’t you?) but if the Nugs at least play good ball tonight, I will be happy.

by GoldenNugget on Nov 13, 2009 7:47 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Using Balkman is just asking to send Kobe to the line.

I think Afflalo has the best chance of staying with Kobe on the perimeter as a finesse defender — and Melo and KMart if he tries to post up. Otherwise we’ll see 5 fouls in 2 minutes like Dahntay last year.

While we have little to no defense like the old Nuggets, most of the games so far have been on the road. The old Nuggets always played way way better at home. We just need a little bit of our mojo back, and the 2 latest games were much better than the Miami/ATL blowouts, at least we have a sensible lineup starting. I’m not ready to concede an LA victory already. JR and Afflalo FTW

K-Mart should be one of the first off the bench

He can set the defensive tone but he doesn’t rebound too well and can’t shoot. Balkman should get a few minutes a game behind him but GK sucks

by runningdonut on Nov 13, 2009 9:05 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

I meant

He should be one of the first out of the starters to the bench. 35+ minutes is too much, he will wear down. We need to play Balkman and (yes) Malik Allen a few minutes behind him

by runningdonut on Nov 13, 2009 9:12 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

We're just too small!

Question: We all knew we needed size & length to play the Lakers. Why didn’t we get bigger?? This is all well & good, but we all know w/ Pau, Mbenga, & Bynum, we WON’T BE COMPETITIVE!

Defense

Minus a few lapses – the Nuggets D has forced the Lakers to shoot multiple times with less than 5 secs on the shot clock. That is a sure sign that they are not giving them many easy baskets. I know that the Lakers are more patient than most NBA offenses and let the clock run down, but I like what I see. The defense on Kobe isn’t bad either – he is just a freak that can hit off-balance fade aways that you really can’t defend much. Thoughts?

by Magnus Opum on Nov 13, 2009 9:53 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Definitely seem to be out of our funk

D is active, nobody but Kobe’s hitting anything, Birdman/Nene/KMart are bringing it, Ty’s slicing and dicing, and Afflalo has really given us a spark. Now if we can just get JR & Melo hot…

by CraftyB on Nov 13, 2009 9:57 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

by Verbal Kint on Nov 13, 2009 10:26 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

As long as either Bynum or Gasol is hurt, Lakers are very mortal

If they’re both healthy for the playoffs (hardly a sure thing, given their histories), it’s gonna be tough.

I want them at 100% when we beat them this year.

Man the Nuggets are dangerous when they're focused

They were last year, but now they have a couple of upgrades in the form of Afflalo and Ty lawson

No points for Kobe kinda worries me

Now that he’s tried the team way (FAIL), he won’t hesitate to try and bomb ’em back into it himself.

Very good game by the Nuggets

They were very good last year, and it’s looks like they’ve gotten better this year, with the addition of Lawson, another year of experience, and I’m even buying that Carmelo has some new confidence, swagger, intensity, whatever you want to call it.

Which NBA Team Has the Best Center-Power Forward Rotation in the League?

THE STIFF LIST (as of 2/7 by Andrew)

STIFF #1: THE FUTURE OF THE NBPA
If the NBA owners opening proposal for the new collective bargaining agreement is any indication, we're heading for a lockout in 2011 and after that, smaller contracts, smaller salaries and less revenue shared with the players.

STIFF #2: THE CLIPPERS
After correctly kicking Mike Dunleavy upstairs and rightly installing Kim Hughes as head coach, why are rumors of Isiah Thomas joining the Clips circling around already?

STIFF #3: THE EASTERN CONFERENCE
Rumors of the re-birth of the Eastern Conference have been greatly exaggerated.  Yes, the Cavaliers are awesome but the sixth playoff seed might be sub-.500.  And do you think any of the West's top six teams fear the Celtics, Magic or Hawks?  No chance.

STIFF #4: ANKLE INJURIES
First Carmelo Anthony.  Then Chauncey Billups. And now possibly Arron Afflalo?  Tape those ankles up, dammit!

STIFF #5: NEW JERSEY NETS
4-46 and losers to the lowly Pistons on Saturday night.  But Lawrence Frank was the problem, right?
