One way or another (Nuggets/Bulls Recap)

Nene_noah_mediumHave you ever seen an ending like that?!?! The refs must decide if Brad Miller's quick jumper with :00.3 seconds left on the clock was still in his hand ... if it's good the Bulls win 91-90 ... if it's still on his finger tips then it's no good and Denver sneaks out of Chicago with a 90-89 win. Fortunately, the ball was still on Miller's fingertip and Denver snaps a two-game losing streak.

Star-divide

I am not going to lie. When that shot by Miller touched nothing but net ... I felt pretty awful. Denver controlled most of game and for Chicago to slip in and steal the win would have burned. Suddenly the Nuggets would have been on a three-game losing streak and Earl Smith III or ESIII's return would have been spoiled.

Fortunately for the Nuggets head official Mark Wunderlich wasn't afraid to make the unpopular and correct call and Denver got the win. To paraphrase what Scott Hastings said to Chauncey Billups in the post game interview, sometimes it's better to learn a lesson and still win the game rather than to learn a lesson and lose the game.

The biggest problem with the final play was that the Nuggets left Miller wide open at the top of the key and he had a clean look at the hoop with no defender in sight. So, the Nuggets still got the win, but they should have been able to put this game away a lot earlier.

The Denver Post article that mentioned J.R. or Earl Smith wanted to go by Earl instead of J.R. must not have been read by Altitude play-by-play man Chris Marlowe as he referred to Smith as "J.R." roughly 673 times during the game. But it was good to see Smith back on the floor. He finished 1-9 shooting (3-4 free throws, 0-3 three-point), scored 5 points, 3 rebounds, 3 turnovers, and 5 assists. The thing that impressed me about Smith was his ability to recognize that after going 1-2 to start the game and 0-7 afterwards that he was going to be an asset distributing the ball. He took shots when he was open and started the game attacking the rim and missing a layup that he will not miss throughout the season. A little rust, but he did play a nice 29 minutes and even made a small difference on the boards with a couple nice grabs in traffic.

Denver's bigs (K-Mart, Nene, and Bird) combined for 31 of Denver's 46 team rebounds. I think that was the Nuggets' bigs best effort on the boards ... even though Joakim Noah grabbed 21 boards by himself (of his team's 44). Speaking of Martin, he played some tough basketball and having him on the floor made a big difference.

Another big difference tonight was George Karl inserting Arron Afflalo into the starting lineup. This was an expected play, but one we hadn't seen yet this season. Double-A responded with a nice game in just 19 minutes scoring 10 points on 4-8 shooting (2-3 from downtown) ... I can't help but wonder what he would have done with those 8 minutes that Anthony Carter got. Karl should have recognized Afflalo's hot hand and ridden him a bit more than just 19 minutes. Perhaps the trust in Afflalo will build as the season wears on because he's looking better and better in each game.

The trust in Ty Lawson seems to be improving as well. Lawson got the bulk of the backup point guard minutes (18) and Karl even trusted the rookie to start the final quarter with Denver up just 71-66 and Lawson played a great portion of the fourth as Billups didn't replace him until the 4:50 mark. I think it's safe to say this kid has earned the backup duties and will continue to get steady minutes.

A few random notes:

  • Chris Andersen (who continues to look unimpressive) started the game without a headband, but came back in the second half sporting a headband.
  • Melo scored his 11,000 point as a Denver Nugget on a fastbreak layup feed from ESIII.
  • The combo of ESIII, Melo and Lawson is going to create some exciting plays this season.
  • Derrick Rose is not 100% ... his ankle injury is still lingering. Always sort of a disappointment when a young star is not able to show you their skills.
  • At the 10:25 mark of the fourth quarter Lawson found Nene on a pick-and-roll heading towards the hoop ... Nene went up and THUNDERED down a right handed dunk that shook the entire hoop and gave Denver a 75-68 lead. Wish we saw that Nene a bit more.
  • Melo thought he had yet another game winner when he sank a baseline fadeaway with just 13.1 seconds remaining, but it wasn't to be.
  • I'm still a bit confused how the refs determined that it took Noah just 0:00.3 seconds to secure a rebound, come down in that short amount of time, and get a timeout.
  • Either way you look at this game ... you'll be happy if you are a Denver fan and miserable if you are a Bulls fan.

The Nuggets have another game tomorrow night in Milwaukee as part of yet another of their 22 back-to-back sets. This was a big win from a moral standpoint. The roadtrip is coming to an end and the Nuggets needed a break ... they didn't get a lucky break, but they sure are glad Brad Miller has long hands.

This photo isn't from the Nuggets and Bulls game

I see nothing in this picture which is going to make me believe that this picture came from the Nuggets and Bulls game.

problem is he's shooting a J,

Exactly. Who’s to say this pic wasn’t taken after another .3 seconds rolled off after the clock went to triple zeros?

Not complaining though. The majority of coverage around this game suggests the refs made the right call. Of course disagreeing with the refs is a no-no these days, but so be it. Chalk up a win.

Indeed they made the right call.

The play they showed on Altitude TV over and over again showed the ball was just barely on his fingertip still. Was crazy … and could have gone either way, but I think they got it right (from what I saw).

National sports coverage says…

ESPN coverage tends to agree with the decision to wave off the Miller shot.

And why that opposite court backboard light is off in that photo posted above is definitely a head scratcher. Do both normally go off? I would imagine so.

ROBBED!!!

You can say all you want nuggets fans but there was some shitty calling down the stretch. Your supposed to be one of the best teams in the league now and you almost got beat by a rookie starter PF, a 1 year player, a guy who didnt play at all last season because of a stress factor and you still almost lost (won by won point because of shitty refs). THE BULLS GOT ROBBED FACE IT!!!!

If you really want to make an effective whine you might try using correct English. You need to use the contraction “you’re” in “You’re supposed to be one…”. See how that works? “Your” is the possesive pronoun and one can not own a “supposed”. Also it is not a “stress factor”, it is a “stress FRACTURE”. The word “fracture” means a break. You need to learn the difference between “won” and “one”. These are called homonyms. They sound the same but they are spelled differently and they have different meanings. All caps is considered bad form but beyond that you need some sort of punctuation there. You need to treat that so-called sentence as either two independent clauses like so “The Bulls got robbed; face it” or you need to break it up into two sentences. The two words “Face it.” actually can stand alone as an imperative sentence. This is no where near advanced English usage so one can only conclude that you have done very poorly in school and probably lack the intelligence to have done so. I hate to think that this lack of intelligence is representative of Bulls fans, but you are here representing them anyway.

If you want to mention bad calls by the refs, you have to include all the times that Melo got fouled with no call, although that is so routine that we tend to not notice it any more. Billups fouled Rose long before the shot because they had a foul to give, but the officials gave him two free throws anyway and Billups was hacked hard with no foul called at the ten second mark. I don’t think you relly want to go to bad officiating as your excuse for losing.

This obsession with the

insertion of the Weak Link(AC) is getting old. They Nuggets went from a 10 point lead to a 4 point lead. AA should have been one of the horses rode down the stretch

Even if that is from the game, you can’t see the scoreboard or shot clock, rendering that evidence useless.

Backboard

I think the evidence is in the backboard – it isn’t lit up. Honestly this picture is pretty surprising – I think we all saw the ball on his fingers during the replay, but that was from a more favorable (as a nuggets fan) angle.

Good defense?

Sure the Nuggets gave Miller a wide open shot, but if Kenyon would have followed him, he would have given up the lob pass near the basket to a streaking Rose. Instead Kenyon stayed home and the Nuggets forced the Bulls to take a desperation shot from a role player moving away from the basket.

I was watching on NBATV with the Chicago announcers and they were very upset with the overrule. Understandably so, but their immediate reaction was priceless.

by nugz31 on Nov 10, 2009 10:48 PM MST reply actions

Unimpressive?

I have to take issue with the idea that Bird looked unimpressive.

Sure, he didn’t have a block. And he isn’t playing like the Bird of last year. But the game he is playing will age a little better, and we’ve got him for 5 years. At least I hope so – I love the man.

I’m not an apologist, or a massive Birdman homer or anything. There were a couple frustrating plays tonight where he was flatfooted in the paint, and Noah absolutely outworked him. But notice that during the second half Jabba the Karl was subbing Kenyon and Nene at PF while Bird was playing primary duty at the 5. I also (and correct me if I’m wrong on this) think he’s bulked up a bit. He looks heavier, and a little slower, than he did last season.

The ultimate point that I’m trying to make – pretty poorly, but if you’re on this site then you can piece it all together – is that Chris is trying to fill out his length and be less of a help defender who makes spectacular plays. More of a classic 5. He hasn’t been biting on pumps nearly as much, and one call in particular tonight against him occurred when he jumped straight up. Total bullshit, and you know the one I’m talking about.

Playing more of a true Center role will allow Nene to play the 4 more, which he’s always said he wanted. This means more overall rest for both Kenyon and Nene, which I think everyone will agree is key for us. Also, if Chris can get more comfy with it, we should be able to rely on him – at least against other lengthy, not-so-fat centers like Noah or Collison.

Ultimate solution to our big man problem? Probably not. But I think it should be noticed that Bird is trying to play the role of a player with a few years ahead of him, and a team that has a need that he can help to fill. At least a little. I respect it, and despite any growing pains (21 boards?!?! Damn!) from learning the position, I hope it works out well. I just hope Hess can make sure his strength grows with any size he gains. With a little luck, he could become good enough to slow down Gasol a little bit.

by MontyIII on Nov 10, 2009 11:02 PM MST reply actions

birdman

andersen had 9 boards in 21 minutes. nene had 13 in 40 minutes and kmart 10 in 35 minutes. the 5 guards combined for 10 and melo had 5 rebounds in 36 minutes. that is the kind of team rebounding denver needs to do. a blocked shot is a spectacular play but is a last resort when the defense breaks down. andersen sets the best pick and will try to pass the ball first. he has great instincts but was not a fundamental defender last season. he has made big improvements with being in good position and helping others get open on offense. there is a lot of dirty work to be done on any team. the back to back champions in detroit and the showtime lakers had rodman and rambis. chris andersen is a very important part and the stats may not show his true value.

Well put

Birdman is producing pretty similar to last year minus the blocks, he is getting more rebounds tho. Supposedly the goal was to have him more involved in the offense which continues to be a work in progress. It’s just the explosiveness and the quickness he needs to get back, staying in front of his man has been a problem. Josh Smith, Joakim Noah and Luol Deng all were either to overpower him or completely blow by him. I believe Birdman is trying to bring a more well rounded game to the table, sometimes you want a high energy garbage man though

00:00.4 seconds

is what a catch and shoot has been timed and calculated. the best way to determine if denver executes their half court offense are total assists AND free throw attempts. 20 assists and only 19 fta. the field goal shooting was less then 42%. the important thing was denver won, chauncey played less then 33 minutes and the nugs played at full strength with kmart and smith back in action.

It is impossible for a big stiff like miller to catch and shoot it .3 seconds

If the average is .3 for average players then a 7 foot tall white guy has to be .4 or more.

by Gasus on Nov 11, 2009 10:43 AM MST up reply actions

The way I heard it was that they got a few player together that had reputations ofr getting their shots off quickly and timed them. They found that the best anyone could do was .3 (if memory serves correctly). The upshot of this is that if there’s only .2 on the clock, they don’t bother to put it in play, they’re done.

The biggest ramification is that Bulls fans want to claim that Miller got the shot off as fast as the fastest ever clocked. Rational people consider that unlikely.

About Andersen...

I was happy with is 9 rebounds and 2/3 shooting. Not happy with the dropped passes and being absolutely flat-footed underneath. But he wasn’t the only big not blocking out Noah, who got 21 boards.

The only thing we aren’t seeing from Andersen is the thundering follow-up dunks and ridiculous Birdman posturing. I’ll take the offensive putbacks, but the theatrical shtick isn’t missed.

About the time left on the clock… if the Nuggets lost this game — and it was that close — I would be having a fit about how Noah was able to get a rebound and call time out in three-tenths of a second. Watch the replay of the miss, by the time her gives the signal to the refs, the backboard light is flashing. I thought the game should have been over then.

Vinny Del Negro may have wanted more time, but if ask me he got three-tenths of a second too many.

The correct team ended up winning in the end.

But: Don’t fret, Chicago. You have a good team that will likely cruise to a six-seed and get trounced and bounced in the first round by Cleveland.

by Fly Agaric on Nov 10, 2009 11:45 PM MST reply actions

also about Bird...

I’m not suprised at all he’s struggling like he is, we have been on the road 80% this season? He is twice the player at home, I would love to find the stats for home vs road games on Bird over the last couple seasons.

by CCH on Nov 11, 2009 2:20 PM MST up reply actions

Luckily for you ESPN offers "splits" on their player cards.

Here are Bird’s numbers last season at home and on the road

Home: 38 games, 20.5 minutes, 54.4% fg, 68.1% free throws, .55 steals, 3.08 blocks, 1.1 turnovers, 6.8 rebounds, and 7 points.

Road: 33 games, 20.6 minutes, 55.4% fg, 77.4% free throws, .61 steals, 1.76 blocks, .9 turnovers, 5.6 rebounds, and 5.7 points.

Pretty close to the same numbers given the similar minutes. Some categories like blocks, free throws, and points jump out at you a little bit.

Return of our Nuggets

Full strength Nuggets returned tonight to play some of their most cohesive D of the season and Karl put out some of his most competent rotations. I don’t know why he put AC out with Lawson, but beyond a few turn overs it didn’t hurt TOO much. Also, it’s good to see Melo still put up a clutch 2 with Deng absolutely smothering him. It’s getting frustrating to see him unwilling to pass out of double teams, but he is unwilling to defer responsibility when the seconds wind down. And that is one of my favorite aspects of his play.

Game was incredibly tight and honestly I wasn’t even heart-broken after Miller sank that shot. My snap reaction was frustration, but with a look that open almost anyone will hit that shot. I hope that Bulls fans don’t get too bent out of shape about it because the game probably should have been decided long before then with all the awful late calls (Chauncey’s missed FT should have been at most .1 second, Late call on Chauncey holding Rose, All the Nuggets rough play in that last second scramble for a steal, etc..) but I think the sham-sports link is pretty definitive and the officials would definitely have an aerial shot that clear at replay.

Great game, favorable outcome, deep play off teams. And Dallas still doesn’t like us.

Also about the Chauncey quote in the recap
"As soon as I saw the flight of the ball, I knew it was good," Billups said. "Then, I was sitting and laughing. Not so much about the shot, but looking at their reaction. They were dancing and jumping around like they had just made the Sweet 16. The longer it took, the better I felt. It was a great ending."

A few Bulls fans keep pointing to this quote like Chauncey is making fun of the team for getting excited, but I think they’re misreading his intentions. It sounds mean, but I think he was just commenting on how big the game seemed to them as opposed to himself. I just can’t see Chauncey being as disparaging as they’re making him out to be

Also, I wanted to post all this on Blog A Bull just to put it in perspective, but this is exactly the reason why he said what he said:

At face value yeah it's a douchey comment

but all I’m saying is that you shouldn’t use it to typify Chauncey’s personality. If you’ve read anything about him or heard him in interviews he’s a very humble guy and almost always gives credit to other players first (see the multitude of compliments to CP3). I think the sentence “the longer it took, the better I felt.” just meant that he felt more sure they would overrule it as they reviewed the player longer. Brad Miller and Salmons seemed to say the same thing from the opposite perspective in the recap.

I don’t know who will bother coming back to this debate but to reiterate I’m not necessarily defending the comment, just the player.

Thank God for JR

It was excellent to see him on the floor. Turns out he was rusty but he played much better than the boxscore indicates and was a +12. We needed this, without JR our sloppy offense would have died as it did in the last 2 games, we lose and Melo gets his 25. I really feel JR and AA are going to give us something awesome this year. It can’t be understated how much Deng owned Melo and easily directed him into quadruple teams, bad shots, and turnovers. He did make a clutch shot though and will be fine when he realizes it’s not 2007 anymore. Overall a great game, the Chicago D is for real and the toughest we played so far. If they made a few more shots they probably win. But, I really like this team with JR back, the missing link hopefully replaces the weakest one for good

by runningdonut on Nov 11, 2009 1:27 AM MST reply actions

I agree

JR really completes this team. Without him I feel like we’re just a bunch of stiffs with no range whatsoever. He really adds a different, much needed, dimension to the team. I can’t wait to see how we operate once he has played a couple of games. Our offense should be elite once again.

Chauncey's Free Throw

There is no way a shot can hit the rim, bounce off, somebody grab the rebound, then call time out in 0.1 seconds. The game should have been over at that missed free throw.
Defense was terrible to give that wide open of a shot. Why have Nene guard the inbounder? Final thought…scoring 19 points in the 4th quarter won’t win too many ball games. But we’ll take it.

I think that was the best defense over an entire game we have seen in a while. In the past, the second or third rotator would have been much later and an open shot would have resulted. Last night, everyone, including Melo rotated hard.

Glad to see AC’s minutes down. First time he touched the ball – turnover. AC – I know the guy in the third row is open, but please stop passing to him. You do this at least once a game. Hopefully as Smith get’s back to speed, AC’s minutes go to zero.

After the first quarter, thought Melo played a terrible game. He kept forcing up bad shots hoping for a foul call and got blocked a bunch of times.

Also going to put blame for Melo’s bad game on Karl. Can you please, please, call a timeout and design a play to get your players a good shot when they are struggling? Look in the coaches handbook – it’s allowed – even recommended.

Was their grease on the ball last night? It seemed every pass, especially those to Nene and Bird, was fumbled.

I didn’t know the nuggets won until this morning. I was so disgusted when that shot went in, I turned it off before the review.

AC is a team player

He has consistently said that he will start, come off the bench or not play and not make a big deal about it no matter what. The man has a great attitude that is a contrast to the me-firsts of the league. It is little wonder Karl likes him so much.

That said, I do agree that AC is the worst of the five guards. That’s not to slight AC, though. Afflalo is awesome, Ty Lawson is speedy, JR/Earl Smith is streaky and sometimes deadly. And Chauncey Billups is, of course, a winner.

I’m happy to have AC on the Nuggets. He’s carries himself well. But yeah, I’d like to see him sit on the bench a little bit more. That’s the thing about veterans: they are often complimented for their “locker-room presence”, meaning they don’t necessarily need to be on the court getting touches.

Peace.

by Fly Agaric on Nov 11, 2009 9:48 AM MST up reply actions

I would be too

for the money AC makes. He’s just happy that Karl keeps giving him a contract. He knows he has little more business on the court than I do. This year is likely his last in the league.

Still dreaming of the DNP-CD for AC.

by KarlSucks on Nov 11, 2009 10:11 AM MST up reply actions

I'm quite happy with AC . . .

while he is on the bench.

Actually, if Karl can get away with playing him 8-10 minutes a game during the regular season, great. But I’m going to be confused if AC’s mpg during the playoffs is that high.

by JTR on Nov 11, 2009 12:24 PM MST up reply actions

AC needs to be a ROLE player

Karl needs to get over his sense of responsibilty, guilt, or whatever and regulate AC to his emerging role and stop giving him the minutes that he does. AC is not in the same universe as Lawson and “Afflac” . I almost get the feeling that Karl inserts him in the game as an obligation rather than for strategy. AC may have a “great attitude”, maturity, and he might be a nice guy but that is not the most important qualities for earning minutes—I know Karl is a very good coach but a good coach does whatever is neccessary to win games;if he is inserting AC because of a sense of responsibility to him, he needs to get over that. I don’t know if its true but I read somewhere that AC was quoted as saying before the season started that Karl promised him that his minutes would not be cut. I would like to think that Karl would not have said that, but if he did, the right thing for a good coach to do is to revisit that decision—Lawson and Affalo’s arrival have changed the dynamics of the team for the better. AC needs to be a new role player, last in the guard rotation, utilized during injuries, closing minutes when we have a commanding lead, etc.

by chilly dog on Nov 11, 2009 11:13 AM MST reply actions

billups played 33 minutes

that will be the role ac has on the team. denver wins AND keep chauncey playing time around 30 minutes per game will be a major factor come playoff time. portland struggled to start the season. they now have a 3 guard starting line up. having steve blake at 4.7 million AND andre miller at 7 million per year, ac at 1.3 million as the 5th guard is not a bad problem to have. with all the players denver has the options will be endless.

by nohoops4u on Nov 11, 2009 3:12 PM MST up reply actions

I agree

AC should not be getting major minutes. But it is fine to use him in favorable match ups. Take Dallas for example, they’ve been known to have Kidd, JJB, and Terry all on the floor at the same time, and if one of our guards is fatigued from starting or whatever the circumstance, AC is a very capable player to come in and give you solid defense.
Last night was another good example to use AC I felt. The bulls were running a 7 man rotation basically, with AC’s 8 minutes he was in the game pestering the bulls guards and trying to make them exert more energy on the offensive end. While it allows for one of our key offensive players to rest.

Good call on Earl

He had a bad night shooting, but he’s a natural at that, so I’m not concerned. What I was most impressed by was the maturity of his game. He was agressive on the defensive glass and on offense he penetrated and got some great assists. Awesome first game.

STIFF LIST (as of 1/30 by Jeff Morton)

1. THE ORLANDO MAGIC
After starting the season so well with the Dwight Howard trade drama (10-3) - the Magic have fallen apart (2-5 since) with embarrassing losses to the Celtics (twice), Hornets, and Pacers. Trade Dwight already!

2. CHAUNCEY BILLUPS' FLOP VS. NUGGETS
In the waning seconds of Sunday's game against the Clippers, Chauncey pulled off an acting performance so good it deserved an Academy Award. If he was still a Nugget we would love it, but he's not. STIFF!

3. JIMMER FREDETTE
Dude, if you are going to take the game-winning shot, at least draw some iron: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mNO1goJOruQ

4. GEORGE KARL'S 4TH QUARTER AGAINST THE CLIPPERS
Getting out coached by Vinny Del Negro should be a nice wake-up call. Going away from Gallo. Leaving Al Harrington in. Using Rudy Fernandez at point guard. And going ultra small contributed to the Nuggets loss.

5. JEFF MORTON
For saying that the Nuggets would skimp on payroll and go cheap like the Avalanche. Clearly I was wrong and deserve to be on this Stiff List. I can only hope that the gods of basketball forgive me.
