Melo's magnum opus continues... (Nuggets/Grizzlies Recap)

110109-melo_mediumAs noted before the season started, when Carmelo Anthony shoots over 50% and gets to the free throw line at least nine times, the Nuggets are tough to beat.  But when he shoots 58% from the field and gets to the line 12 times, the Nuggets are unstoppable.

Star-divide

The naysayers will (perhaps rightly) point to the Nuggets atrocious defensive effort tonight, giving up 123 points at home to the normally dormant Memphis Grizzlies.  But even though the Nuggets only won by 10 and there were moments in the fourth quarter when the lead got within 10, I never got a sense that the Nuggets were in trouble.  The Nuggets 133-123 victory tonight was an up-tempo, many possessions game that the Nuggets seemed to be in control of from the third quarter onward.

And again, when Melo performs as he did tonight, combined with his teammates dishing the ball out to the tune of 36 assists, I don't care what jerseys the opposing team is wearing because the Nuggets are winning that game every time (for the uninitiated, that's a shit load of assists...the Nuggets averaged an NBA sixth best 22.2 apg last season).

While I can appreciate a grueling defensive matchup in the NBA, I've always been an offense-first kind of fan (can you blame me?  I grew up in the Doug Moe Era) and I just love watching games like this.  High-scoring, lots of passing, lots of running, lots of shots made (the Grizzlies shot 57.8% from the field...and lost!).  I'll take a game like this over a Celtics/Cavaliers 92-85 game any day of the week.

Here are some observations from the not-so-cheap seats...

...at this point it should be indisputable that if the Nuggets had Marc Gasol anchoring the center position they'd be the best team in the Western Conference.  Gasol, limited by foul trouble, torched the Nuggets for 20 points, 11 rebounds and four assists.

...Gasol's fine play and the marginal contribution from Grizzlies rookie Hasheem Thabeet shows us that the Nuggets will continue to struggle against genuine "bigs" as the season goes on.  I don't foresee Nuggets vice president of basketball operations Mark Warkentien pulling out "Big Bertha" (i.e. the Nuggets $9 million trade exception) before Tuesday's deadline, but if he does it better be for a guy who's over seven feet tall and not named Steven Hunter.

...when Hunter got inserted into the lineup, you could tell the knowledge level of the fans based on who sarcastically cheered him, who enthusiastically cheered him and who sat on their hands (I'll let you guess which fans are which).

...it took an entire half, but it was nice to see Zach Randolph finally remember that he's Zach Randolph; one of the biggest ball hogs in the NBA.  I loved the sequence late in the third quarter when he chucked an awful turnaround jump shot despite being double teamed in the corner in front of the Nuggets bench and despite there being 10 seconds on the shot clock.  Then, he miraculously got the ball back and chucked it up again.  I know the Grizzlies are desperate to sell tickets, but I suspect having Z-Bo and Allen Iverson around can only be bad for their young stars O.J. Mayo, Rudy Gay and Gasol.

...when the Grizzlies were playing the Nuggets neck-and-neck throughout the first half, I almost got nervous until I looked over at their bench and realized that the Grizzlies coaching "brain trust" consists of Lionel Hollins, Johnny Davis and Henry Bibby.    Hollins and Davis' combined winning percentage as NBA head coaches is .324.  That's like having Power Rangers in reverse.  What, Bernie Bickerstaff wasn't available? (I just had to, sorry.)

...Ty Lawson is everything that Earl Boykins should have been but never could be.  Like Boykins, he's a small, speedy pest that be disruptive to the opposition.  But unlike Boykins, he's not desperately trying to be a shooting guard and being disruptive to his own team.

...Joey Graham seems to have supplanted Renaldo Balkman as George Karl's "hustle guy" off the bench.  I'm not sure what Renaldo did to get himself so deep into Karl's dog house, or if this is just a matter of the Nuggets having too much talent on the roster.  Denver Stiffs needs to investigate.

...Chris Andersen should never be allowed to shoot a jump shot unless there's absolutely no time left on the shot clock.  I applied this same rule to Kenyon Martin two seasons ago but it never took.

...Chauncey Billups had a fabulous night.  12 assists against just two turnovers.  I swear he gets smarter with every game, and he already starts each game being the smartest player on the floor.

...what more can be said about Carmelo Anthony?  In his first three games, he's averaging 37.7 ppg, 7.0 rpg, 13.7 free throw attempts per game, is shooting well over 50% from the floor and is dishing out just over four assists a game.  Wow.  I just hope Nuggets fans (including me) keep this early season performance in perspective as this is not normal and can't possibly continue at this torrid pace.  Can it?

...having watched Dwyane Wade and LeBron James play recently, kudos to the Nuggets coaching staff and Melo's teammates for making Melo's offensive play on the court come easy to him.  It's getting painful watching how hard Wade and LeBron have to work to get points and a lot of that comes down to coaching.

...3-0 before we hit the road.  Congrats to the Nuggets on a great start thus far and taking the sting out (a bit) from a tough Broncos loss earlier in the day...

Overall good game.

Our offence really flowed. We were hitting our shots and the passing was great. best offensive game in a while.

Defence was a different story.. It didn’t really matter tonight against the Grizzlies but it will matter when we face the Lakers, Spurs and Dallas. i ’m sure it will get better though.

Melo was unstoppable again… is it to early to break out the M.V.P Chants?

state of flux

until jr returns denver will be circling the wagons for 4 more games. if denver has proved one thing so far is that there is more than one way to win a basketball game. i never thought i would ever say this but denver misses jr’s defense. without another big player rebounding from the 2 guard position will be critical.giving up 40 points in the first quarter and coming back from that is still hard to digest.

Nailed it

Starting AC gives us a small ball lineup from the very beginning. Afflalo usually only comes in as part of a 3 guard set to back up Melo or guard someone like Brandon Roy. As long as we make due with the 3 PG rotation Denver will get outrebounded and need to be efficient on offense. rREight now the bigs are having to help distribute teh ball while JR’s playmaking is missing as well. When he returns hopefully his range and size will open things up a little more for offensive boards and putbacks from all our bigs.

by runningdonut on Nov 1, 2009 11:21 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed

AC did have a good game statistically, but the backcourt is SOOOO small with him starting… I’m not one of the AC-haters, but he is too small to play next to CB1 or TyLaw. I suggest Karl’d start Afflalo (just like Jones kast year) becaus he gives the starting unit some size in the backcourt.

Excellent

We’ve only been getting NBA games on free-to-air TV over here since about February last year, but in that time there has been plenty of LeBron. And it is indeed painful watching him have to work so hard each possession (although he is up to it) to score, compared to Melo’s ease of scoring. I got to see the Portland game last week and he was SO good.

goes both ways

melo is letting his team help him. his points are coming in the context of the offense instead of going 1 on 5. his three 3 point attempts were his high for the season in a single game. he went 11 of 12 from the free throw line. for 3 games melo is now 36 of 41 almost 88%. he has missed 2 free throws the past 2 games going 27 of 29. it is a very disciplined approach to the game.

What a game from OJ Mayo

What’s Memphis going to do if A.I. comes back and his numbers fall off a cliff?

by runningdonut on Nov 1, 2009 11:42 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

I was looking at Memphis' lineup ... having A.I. really makes no sense.

Iverson’s playing time (used to roughly 35+ minutes) is going to be a major issue to the chemistry of the Grizz.

Mike Conley, Marcus Williams, and O.J. Mayo need minutes … Iverson will eat into all their growth … will be interesting to see.

no kidding

grizz are better off without ai. if he can be a good citizen and stay in shape memphis can move him at the trade dead line to a contender in need.

He's not there to develop anyone

He’s a gimmick, he’s there to put butts in the seats. No one in the NBA is hurting in this bad economy more than memphis

And that is what makes it so strange.

It’s no secret that Memphis is in dire need of more revenue, but just seems funny that they are doing all they can with the A.I. signing … even if it means stunting the growth of what could be promising young talent.

I'm a little concerned with the defensive play

But I’m with you Andrew. From the middle of the 2nd quarter on, I never felt like the Nuggets were going to lose. Glad to see Bird with a good game. I’m still concerned with his eagerness to jump and get a block, leaving him an easy target for drawing the foul. Both Bird and Nene need to remember that they are bigs and they’ll be getting fouls called on them. Stop complaining. As much as I LOVE J.R., I’m really concerned that his return will limit the minutes of Ty Lawson. Karl wants to give AC his minutes and wants to bring J.R. In off the bench. Karl is going to have to cut the minutes of either Aflalo or Ty and I’m just afraid he’ll cut the minutes of Ty. Do any of you think he’ll finally concede and put AC back on the bench in favor of better players?

J.R. is my homeboy

by Greyson on Nov 2, 2009 12:05 AM MST via mobile reply actions   0 recs

I'm very interested to see how this plays out.

But I think I’m just gonna be pissed at how much AC still plays. Chauncey getting around 30 minutes and Ty eating up all of the back up minutes is the only way it should be!

Ty is gonna be huge for JR Smith. JR likes to run and spot up at the 3 point line. Ty is gonna push the ball and hit him for so many open transition 3’s its gonna be ridiculous! JR Swish! But I guess we shall see what happens.

by GottaLoveMelo on Nov 2, 2009 8:32 AM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Hopefully Ty and AC will play 15-20 minutes each

And Karl will cut Chauncey’s minutes as he promised. I’d like to see Chauncey with 30-35 minutes a game (rather than the 46 he played in the Portland game).

by NuggBuckets on Nov 2, 2009 8:06 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

They both cant play that amount of minutes.

Say CB gets 30 mins. That leaves 18 back up PG minutes and Ty should get all of those!

With JR back he should get about 30ish mins whether he is starting or not. Then Afflalo could work out the rest of the SG mins. But then again GK likes the small ball line up so That plan off action may just be me. He seems to like Lawson and Billups in the backcourt at times.

Maybe that will change when JR returns.

by GottaLoveMelo on Nov 3, 2009 8:07 AM MST up reply actions   0 recs

True on Billups' minutes, but there will be games where we need him to play that much.

Had Billups been on the bench … Denver might not have won that Portland game.

I think that might have been the plan when the season started but Ty has shown he’s ready to go (much to my surprise) so it will be hard for Karl to justify taking his minutes

Loving this Nugs team...

Melo is playing out of his mind and Chauncey is doing everything we thought he would. I could not be more impressed with what I’m seeing from Ty Lawson, I mean I thought he was gonna be good but this soon? No way. I just want to see JR come back and see how Karl sets up his guard rotations. This team is built perfectly for the it’s own style of play and is forcing other teams to play it’s way. Easily one of the best teams in the NBA to watch.

by MeloNugs on Nov 2, 2009 12:09 AM MST reply actions   0 recs

blessing in disguise

melo will establish his game. before jr comes back he will be able to see in advance how his game fits in. when he does get on the court he can pick his spots based on what the team needs. it is a matter of time before the rest of the teams figure out a way to stop melo. when that happens with jr in the line up melo’s assists will go sky high.

Graham

Is getting in the game because the Nuggets are getting killed by scoring combo guards. Even GK has his limits with AC when Mayo is scoring 40 and Brandon Roy gets 30+ on a bad shooting night. Same thing with Brewer and D-Will in the Utah game. Other than that Joey is a more accomplished and confident on the offensive end, he is bigger than most two-guards and willing to try to score when he needs to. Initially I did not think he was very good myself but as a role player he fits what the Nuggets are trying to do right now. Nugs are giving big minutes to AC, Birdman, and K-Mart who all can’t shoot. That’s probably why Balkman hasn’t played and the bit minutes are divided up between Afflalo and Graham.

by runningdonut on Nov 2, 2009 4:12 AM MST reply actions   0 recs

AC has started 73 games in the past two years. Afflalo and Graham have 0 between the two of them. I’m assuming that when he says “confident” he means “experienced.”

Memphis Looked Pretty Good...on Offense

For the first time in several years, the Griz are kind of fun to watch. With Mayo, Conley, Gay, Gasol, Randolph and Iverson, they have 5-6 guys who can really fill it up. And, they have 4 legitimate bigs in Gasol, Thabeet, Hamed and Randolph. Now, they have no committment on the defensive end, and some major chemistry issues, but at least there is some hope on Beale Street.

BTW .. the Nuggs defense looked pathetic, but they probably coasted in front of a long road trip..

I’d like to see his minutes between 30-32 a game, but Denver will need a lot of blowout for that to happen.

Nene'

Needs to stop pouting about not being in his natural position. With a body like his he should start focusing on being a power CENTER at the 5. Clearly the brass isnt going to shop for a true five, so Nene should try and revolutionize the position…

by SternfluffsKobe on Nov 2, 2009 2:42 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Stern DOES fluff Kobe

I agree 100% about Nene and the actual, real-world chances of him getting traded or getting to play the 4. Neither are going to happen this year or even next. And while I don’t think he actually “pouts” about it the traditional way, I do think that he lets his play pout a little bit; jump hooks and fade away jumpers are for 4s. Tip-ins and hard fought two handed dunks are for 5s…

by Big Mickey D on Nov 2, 2009 2:57 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Pouting

Yeah, a little harsh. You’re right. I just think he’s amazing and could be the fastest, strongest, most talented 5 in league if he just has a shift in thought and his approach…

by SternfluffsKobe on Nov 2, 2009 3:07 PM MST via mobile up reply actions   1 recs

Not Harsh

That might be Nene’s problem: no one has been harsh enough with him! GK tears up everytime he talks to Nene because of their shared cancer moments and I doubt that anyone else on the coaching staff is in his ear telling him that he is way too big and strong to get pushed around by guys like Biedrins… Someone needs to tell Nene that EVERY OTHER STARTING NUGGET is feared by our opponents except him. The league knows that they can get in his head and that he has two gears: full-blast, kick ass and soft-as-Hell, I might as well be on the bench cheering…

by Big Mickey D on Nov 2, 2009 3:47 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

AC

How does GK have confidence in AC? Is he really that good in practice? I know we all watch the same game but AC has not played well at all. He is an old vet, but really the NBA is a what have you done for me lately league, and well AC has not done anything at all to warrant a starting spot. At least we all know that once JR comes back that AC will be coming off the bench. And hopefully the Law continues to prove he belongs on the floor more than AC. I can handle a rookie making a mistake but I cannot stand when a veteran PG like AC forces the issues and turns the ball over.

To answer

your first question. THEY ARE LOVERS
This question has been asked numerous times. AC is the weakest link in GK’s rotation, not even deserving play time in the D Leauge. The one man turn over (OMTO) needs to put out to pasture

Fun to watch...

If you can ignore the defensive issues, the game was fun to watch.

AC starts because he is a veteran and GK is trying to keep him confident and stabilize teh starting 5. I don’t mind Lawson coming off the bench with energy for now…as long as when JR comes back he gets more minutes than AC.

Balkman doesn’t play because he has no offensive game. I like him, but he is really disruptive on the offensive end when he comes in.

the upside of ac starting

when jr comes back lawson and afflalo will not have to change their roles on the team. they were in the game together during the 4th quarter rally against utah. billups and melo started the 4th quarter on the bench. the good thing about ac is jr can come back into the staring line up and ac can go without playing in any games. he will not complain and be ready when his number is called. unless denver is 7 wins and 0 losses i cannot see ac starting beyond 7 games.

Melo is going crazy right now

I still don’t have TV but when I looked at the box score tonight the last thing I expected to see was another 40 point game from Melo. It’s not that I don’t think he’s capable, but when you’re career high after 6 years in the league is 49 and you score back to back 40 plus point games, there is indication that you are a hell of a lot more focused, or improved, or whatever, than you ever were before. I can’t wait to see how this season unfolds. I’m actually starting to believe Melo might have a legit chance at winning the MVP, and I NEVER thought I would say that after last season.

by GoldenNugget on Nov 2, 2009 10:53 AM MST reply actions   0 recs

Forgot to mention

Something I think we should watch throughout the year is Melo’s assists. I have always believed that with Melo (and most other players) the more assists he has the better, not only he plays, but the whole team as well. Him sharing the ball lets his teamates know that he trusts them and it opens up the floor as well. I wouldn’t be surprised if Melo has a career year and hands out the most dimes per game of his career as well.

One more thing. That turnaround pump fake he did in the 4th minute of the 4th quarter off that Chauncey inbounds pass was just flat out nasty. I can’t wait to see more of those types of moves in the future from Melo.

The Portland game showed me Melo's teamwork.

He let Chauncey take what would have been game-winning shot in the waning seconds of the Portand game. Unfortunately, Smooth missed it. But even then Melo just grinned at him and patted his ass. Melo wouldn’t have missed that shot, but the Nuggets will win more games if he’s not taking every single finisher.

Boykins

Please don’t compare Lawson to Boykins – that’s what scares me the most. In the end Boykins was so small and such a defensive liability that other teams just abused him when he came on the court. That’s my greatest fear with the lack of height for Lawson.

On the “ease of scoring” front, there was a play where Nene posted up and received the entry pass. Melo just jogged over and Nene handed him the ball while screening the defenders. Easiest shot you can take against a half court defense. Wow that was easy, not even a hand in the face. Nene did all the work and Melo got the bucket.

Yep

Orlando isn’t even fully healthy and they are killin it. We arn’t either I guess. Idk, I guess we will have to wait and see. But I do like Orlando.

My 3 Cents, and Bee

Where the hell are you? Have I been missing your posts?

I hated Boykins

with a passion. For every time he shot the Nugs into a game he shot them out of 5 or 6. Horrible player. Thank goodness he is gone. Lawson already looks 20 times smarter on the court than little Earl ever did.

Hey Peter McNab, I'm starting to see sunshine and rainbows here.

THE STIFF LIST (as of 2/7 by Andrew)

STIFF #1: THE FUTURE OF THE NBPA
If the NBA owners opening proposal for the new collective bargaining agreement is any indication, we're heading for a lockout in 2011 and after that, smaller contracts, smaller salaries and less revenue shared with the players.

STIFF #2: THE CLIPPERS
After correctly kicking Mike Dunleavy upstairs and rightly installing Kim Hughes as head coach, why are rumors of Isiah Thomas joining the Clips circling around already?

STIFF #3: THE EASTERN CONFERENCE
Rumors of the re-birth of the Eastern Conference have been greatly exaggerated.  Yes, the Cavaliers are awesome but the sixth playoff seed might be sub-.500.  And do you think any of the West's top six teams fear the Celtics, Magic or Hawks?  No chance.

STIFF #4: ANKLE INJURIES
First Carmelo Anthony.  Then Chauncey Billups. And now possibly Arron Afflalo?  Tape those ankles up, dammit!

STIFF #5: NEW JERSEY NETS
4-46 and losers to the lowly Pistons on Saturday night.  But Lawrence Frank was the problem, right?
