Playoff intensity in Portland (Nuggets/Blazers Recap)

Billups_mediumWho would have thought that the second game of an 82 game season would feel like a playoff game? Tonight was a slugfest ... a sloppy one, but with a happy ending for Nuggets fans.

Star-divide

So, in my preview of the game tonight I asked the question, "What's the kid going to do for an encore?" The question was referring to 21 year-old rookie Ty Lawson. What I didn't realize is that I should have directed the question at the 25 year-old kid who the night after pouring in 30 points; followed up that effort with an inspired and determined 41 points on the road ... in Portland ... in the second game of a back-to-back.

Of course I'm referring to the Superstar Carmelo Anthony. Yes, superstar. Melo has scored 71 points in the last two games and his performance tonight at the Rose Garden was nothing short of spectacular. Melo finished the game with the following stat line: 11-21 shooting, 18-19 at the foul line, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 41 points.

The Nuggets were not getting much help from their bench (13 points) or their frontcourt of Nene and Kenyon Martin. The night after the duo combined for 32 points Big Brazil and K-Mart could muster only 13 total points. So, Melo did what he needed to do to put the team on his back in the absense of J.R. Smith.

I've begun reading Bill Simmons' new book and in it he talks about getting to watch the career of Larry Bird play out and how special it was because it took place during Simmons' formative years. Now, I have watched a legend grow before my eyes in John Elway, but for much of the early part of his career I was too young to fully understand what it all meant. Getting to watch the rise of Melo has been something pretty special for us basketball fans trapped in what Jim Armstrong refers to as a dusty old cow town. Games like this one in Portland makes being a fan all the worth while.

I was watching the game alone and was on the edge of my (couch) seat for the entire fourth quarter. I found myself leaping up after questionable calls (there were plenty on both sides), fist pumping after clutch buckets (mainly free throws) and hoping Brandon Roy's last second attempt sailed wide (phew, it did).

I remember feeling that Melo was on the cusp of breaking through as a superstar during the first two games of the Western Conference Finals and I'm beginning to feel that way again ... and it's only game two of an 82 game season. The race for the Northwest division title started tonight and Denver has first blood with their 97-94 win.

What tonight's game meant ...

You don't want to read too much into a early season win, but you could tell that tonight both teams desperately wanted this game. Nate McMillan and George Karl were playing a chess game towards the end of the final period ... subbing offense for defense. Players were diving for loose balls, over acting on fouls, losing their minds on good plays, feeding off the crowd for the Blazers and wanting to silence the crowd for the Nuggets, doing all they could to get to the foul line, and making the extra effort in every aspect of the game. No doubt about it ... this was a early season playoff battle ... the older brother again beat the younger brother (so to speak.)

I hadn't been overly impressed with Brandon Roy until tonight. I have missed most of his big moments and when he's played Denver  he hasn't shined like he did tonight. It was fun watching him and Melo battle a little bit. Roy's 30 points more than overcame his 13.8 average against Denver last season. He's a handful to defend and I'm not sure that Arron Afflalo is yet up to that challenge ... neither is Anthony Carter. I feel like I finally understand the buzz about Roy ... sorry I arrived unfashionably late to the party.

Random thoughts during an important road game

1st Quarter:

  • 11:44 mark ... Greg Oden picks up his first of what I hoped would be many fouls as Nene drove the baseline. You never want a seven-footer with shot blocking skills to get into the flow of the game. So far ... so good.
  • 7:43 mark ... Nuggets score their FIRST POINTS OF THE GAME! Too many jumpers and nobody is attacking ... tired legs from the night before? Did the 4:00 a.m. arrival throw the team off?
  • Um ... can the Nuggets protect the glass? 8-0 offensive boards in favor of Portland. Oden had around four of them and their guards are getting position on K-Mart ... ?!?!
  • Denver finishes the quarter strong and has a 24-17 lead ... for a while it didn't look like the Nuggets would score double-digits in the quarter, but Melo's hot hand took over and Denver went on a 10-0 run.

2nd Quarter:

  • Arron Afflalo is wearing white shoes ... why did nobody tell him that Denver goes all-black with the alternative jerseys? Is this a prank? Is Afflalo pulling an opposite of J.R. (who wore black shoes all preseason.)
  • Ty Lawson is sporting a headband again. He did not wear a headband in college from what I remember... what does this mean?
  • The Blazers go on a 11-0 run ... is this going to be a game of runs? Is Pepto Bismol a secret sponsor tonight?
  • 6:32 mark ... Greg Oden picks up his 3rd foul ... muhahaha! He's heading to the bench for an extended stay.
  • It's a good thing that Brandon Roy took up basketball and not boxing. I'm not saying he couldn't be a tremendous boxer, but the bone structure in his face would lead to a lot of easy cuts.
  • 6:03 mark ... Portland is up 32-29 has found thier man to frustrate Melo ... his name: Martell Webster. He just swatted away Melo's dunk and Melo is mad! Hoping Melo doesn't stay frustrated for long. Oh and this Webster kid can ball a little bit.
  • Melo is committed to the defensive end. Looks like he's gunning to get his name in the MVP talk ... or perhaps he's adopted the hated Al Davis' Just Win Baby  persona.
  • I am looking at Juwan Howard and thinking that he is OLD ... my buddy Mark texts me asking how hold Howard is ... well he was on the Fab-5 team at Michigan that basically invented the baggy shorts look. His teammates there ... Chris Webber (works for TNT and NBATV), Jalen Rose (works for ESPN), Jimmy King (playing ball still in Europe or New Mexico?), Ray Jackson (pretty sure he made me a late night burrito at Illegal Pete's the other night) are all out of basketball. Yes, Howard is old.
  • The half is over and Denver is down only one (43-42) after playing basically like garbage. The Blazers have taken 51 shots to Denver's 27 ... yes a difference of 24!!!! How is Portland only up by one?!?!

3rd Quarter:

  • Coming back to start the second half TNT reminds us that Portland is out-rebounding Denver 29-18 and their bench is outscoring Denver's 17-6. Things are not looking good. I could see Portland going on a run and breaking Denver's will ... then again Melo is playing some great basketball and trying to win this thing by himself.
  • 9:40 mark ... Oden picks up his 4th foul and heads back to the bench. I guess the refs are trying to make up for the lack of whistle blowing they missed out on in the preseason. Pryzbilla is in and about a minute after checking in picks up his 4th foul on a great "Kobe-esque" move by Melo ... basically #15 ran into Pryz and acting as if he'd been sideswiped by a bus. About a minute later at the 7:15 mark Pryz picks up his 5th foul. More Juwan Howard please!!!
  • The Nuggets basically have one scoring option and he used to rock the corn rows. Melo is going to have to win this thing by himself. Melo just pulled down the Nuggets first offensive rebound and BRICKED the dunk. The TNT guys are saying Melo just looked over at them with a look of embarrassment ... don't worry Melo, I was only able to dunk dodge balls in high school.
  • Denver held Brandon Roy to just 7 points in the first half, but he's erupted with 11 in this quarter ... he just made Melo look all kinds of silly with a sick pull back jumper. Portland is up 58-54, but can't seem to pull away.
  • 2:27 mark ... Roy just buried a three-pointer, Karl just took A.C. out for Afflalo and the game has a feel that it could slip away at any moment ... gut check time for Denver.
  • Denver goes on a mini 5-0 run thanks to Billups' three and Birdman's 2-2 clutch foul shooting. The camera is zoomed in on Bird and he looks heavy in the face. Am I nuts? Are other people seeing this? Birdman looking sort of like a penguin this year ... no flying!
  • What's with the three stripes shaved into the back of Roy's head? Anybody know what this is about? I used to put bars in the side of my head. I love the design shaved in the head look ... it started from what I remember with Anthony Mason of the New York Knicks and Ron Artest is trying his best to bring it back. Roy seems on board with this too.
  • 0:57 mark ... Nene fouls his old mentor Juwan Howard. Howard looks like his cialis just kicked in as he celebrates the call. Seeing Howard and Nene out there together gives me chills ... like 17 wins kinds of chills ... go away Howard!
  • 0:45 mark ... Nene goes 1-2 from the foul line ... he's 1-5 tonight from freebie territory and his jumper isn't working tonight. Forgettable game for the big fella thus far.
  • With seconds remaining Ty Lawson misses a floating runner from the baseline ... Roy is moving with the ball up the sideline and is getting ready to launch a desperation shot ... this shot is going to go in ... the shot goes in ... 67-62 Portland to end the third. Roy with a 28-foot heave ... could this shot be the difference?

4th Quarter:

  • Does Denver have enough firepower to overcome another 5 point hole? When is Portland going to pull away ... this is a dangerous game by the Blazers ... they can't seem to get a big lead and Denver is doing just enough to stay in this road game.
  • 11:23 mark ... Afflalo is now using a very weird defensive strategy ... he's just hugging his man and drawing fouls!
  • 10:56 mark ... Afflalo fouls Andre Miller. This guy is a fouling machine tonight!
  • Denver comes into the quarter 23-33 from the foul line ... if these 10 free points come back to haunt the Nuggets it won't be the first time ... 10 misses cost the Nuggets a few playoff games last season ... glad that's back!
  • 10:45 mark ... Juwan Howard committs a loose ball foul and is upset about it. He lips, "That's not a foul!" ... in 2009 everything is a foul!
  • 9:37 mark ... Bird swats Rudy Fernandez's dunk attempt ... Fernandez uses his off-hand to try to push Bird away ... foul on Bird! These refs are just "trrrble" ... both teams growing frustrated with the calls. Portland up 71-68.
  • 7:18 mark ... Rudy Fernandez hits a big three pointer ... 10 points in about two and a half minutes for Rudy. Looking like J.R. Smith out there ... I miss J.R. ... Nuggets need his scoring. Portland is up 81-74 and the Rose Garden is rocking ... can the Blazers put the Nuggets away?
  • Nuggets go on a mini 4-0 run as Melo and Lawson both hit layups. Lawson is fast ... not sure if he can finish with his left hand, but man ... he's fast.
  • At the 5:03 mark with Portland leading 85-81 ... the game became crucial with every possession and here is how things played out from that point:
    • The Blazers finished the game 1-4 shooting and in six trips to the foul line only converted 7-12 free throw attempts.
    • The Nuggets finished the game 3-9 shooting and in five trips to the foul line they converted 9-10 free throws ... Melo going 7-8 out of those 10 attempts.
  • Denver found a way to win this game--very impressive considering Denver had no business even being in this game.
  • The play that showed me a lot of maturity and desire to win happened at the 0:12 second mark when Billups missed his 19-footer that would have given Denver a three point lead. Melo had the ball and instead of trying to force something he trusted his teammate to come through for him. We've seen the great players do this throughout their careers ... think Michael Jordan to Steve Kerr. On a night where Melo scored 41 points he was willing to defer to his teammate at the end of the game. If that's not a great sign of a winning attitude I don't know what is.

1 back to back down 21 more to go

great team victory. melo 18 of 19 from the foul line and only 2 points in the third quarter. chauncey- 11 of 12 free throws. andersen was 3 of 4 from the line with 6 boards. nene had 11 rebounds- great effort coming off a strained calf the night before. nugs had only eleven 3 point attemps and held portland to 35% fg and 26% from 3 point land.

brandon roy

add melo to the list of having his hands full guarding roy. he finally got on track in the third quarter against melo and got him into foul trouble. it came down to billups at the end. denver will have to guard him by committee this season. ac, afflalo, balkman, billups, graham, kmart, jr and melo. save this list for labron and kobe too.

First time poster long time reader

This game basically sealed the deal on signing up for sb. Completely agree with you Nate about Melo growing up in front of us. I think there can’t be enough said for Melo figuring out how good he really is and needs to be. On the other hand, we NEED NEED NEED to rediscover that offensive momentum we had last season. Asking him to put up 41 points while Nene struggled to get below the basket is shameful.

Also am I the only one noticing a very obvious breaking down on team defense from last year? I hope it’s just early shakiness from unset starting rotations.

The defensive rotations were a little sloppy, but...

I felt the bigger problem was rebounding. Players were too busy trying to go after the rebound rather than boxing their man out and letting the rebound come to them. It’s a subtle but very important difference.

I watched only the first quarter

Blazers out-offensive-rebounded us by at least 6 or 7 in that quarter alone. However, they couldn’t convert. When we meet them later, they’re going to make their shots, so we need to make ours. I’m looking at you, Nene!

Congrats guys,

you really took that win away from us, I am impressed. More than anything else about Melo’s performance, his poise in the fourth quarter impressed me, especially in that I don’t think he missed a single free throw in the 4th. You guys were just flat out better than us tonight.

Kind words but I don't think I agree

on us having been the better team on the floor tonight. We clearly had the better player but Rudy and Roy smoked almost all the other guys on our team. I’m really hoping the shakiness can be blamed on the back to back.

Clutch

Nugs showed some serious swag being able to grind that one out in the closing minutes. After getting outmuscled all night Nene stepped up huge in the biggest of moments despite being totally unreliable even when Oden and Pryzbilla were out. One dude in the comments nailed it saying that when Nene gets challenged against big talent like LA, SA, Portland he tends to fold and back down. Tonight was a huge step being able to make that play and allow Melo to close it out.

I’ll probably get ripped for it but I give GK credit for being on top of the timeouts and putting the ball in Melo’s hand every critical point in the 4th. How many times last year did he fail to stop the game and adjust when teams started pulling away? I still really don’t forgive him for starting AC and inserting him at the end of the game. Watch it closely at the end of the game AC was cheating off Fernandez who was spotting up for a corner 3. If they inbounds to Rudy and not Roy it’s probably an overtime loss. AC was as good as he can be tonight with only 1 TO, but we need to show some more confidence in AA and Graham who can help a lot more on Roy than AC can.

2 things impressed me the most

at the end of the 3rd quarter roy hits the 3 pointer for a portland 67-62 lead. nugs came back with melo on the bench. during the fourth quarter blazers went ahead 81-74. denver would not go away or quit. a win like this has to help denver in the confidence department.

Karl . .

Also sat Melo to start the fourth when the Blazers were threatening to pull away . .came back to pay dividends as ’Melo had the most energry down the stretch.

It was pretty obvious that Melo needed a rest toward the end of the third. He missed a dunk and a couple other plays he would normally make. The rest did him a lot of good.

I liked Karl’s use of timeouts and his willingness to go to Melo.

I didn't get to see the game

but it sounds like Nene from last year tentative among among bigs..

Did Karl try putting Balkman on Roy? He one of better defenders

No he didn't, and I wondered the same thing

Balkman has the height and athletic spazziness to keep up with Roy, who was shredding us up in the third. He could have improved our sorry rebound total, as well. Here’s hoping Karl gets over his scorn for Balkman.

Balkman suspended

I assume this is related to his DUI arrest. From his player card on espn: Balkman will miss the team’s first two games due to a league mandated suspension, the Denver Post reports.

Ok

I thought that they usually waited until the the legal process had delivered their verdict before the NBA would suspend someone (remember JR is serving his suspension now for a incident that happened over 1.5-2 yrs ago) . Maybe he pleaded guilty for a quick resolution

by starchild on Oct 30, 2009 11:16 AM MDT up reply actions

I don't think Balkman was suspended by the league. He would not be allowed on the bench.

There could have been a benching by the team for two games though. Digging for info …

It said “DNP: coach’s decision” on the boxscore. Don’t think it would say that if he was suspended, since right below Balkman was JR with a notation next to it that said he was serving 7 games. But I wonder why Balkman was there too. Maybe his suspension takes effect when JR returns? Is that possible?

I'd rather it be an official suspension

So that a year later the league doesn’t suspend him again.

its not all sunshine and roses

for as good as melo was (and he was incredible)…
we got killed on the boards
nene stepped up at the very end of the game but other then that there was very little hustle for the rebounds
our guard play will be fine when JR comes back (and eventually AC will take a seat)
melo will be melo
but our front court …
i know its beating a dead horse but for this team to make any noise in the playoffs, let alone challenge for the title we need another big man, one with a post game.

the suspense is killing me

agree denver needs another big man. i wish they would have done something over the summer. right now what they have works over 90% of the time. it is that 5 to 10% that killed them against the lakers in the wcf. i think there will be 3 steps to getting another big. 1. get through the jr suspension. 2. when jr gets back see how he works into the rotation. 3. once all the dust settles denver will decide at that point what they need. minimum of 20 games into the season most likely after the new year. unless things take a major turn for the worse real soon denver will stick with what they have. right now they have 4 new players and jr to work into their system.

I’m starting to think Jeff Foster could really help this team on the glass.

More Than a Little Sloppy

It was a good win and it is early in the year. The ending was more than a little bit sloppy. Thanks to Portland’s free throw shooting we are looking at a W instead of an L. I am trusting that we saw some early season “rust”.

Congrats

That game was everything i feared it would be. As I said, Aldridge needed to get hot to win this one, and he didn’t.

too bad it was blacked out for me. I’d love to have watched it. I look forward to our next match where both teams will have the kinks out and we’ll really see what we both have.

"Fernandez, to my eyes, is the Blazer who walks that walk most comfortably. A lot of Portland's fans (egged on, dare I say, by their local broadcasters) lament things like how Ron Artest or Yao Ming get to hit Brandon Roy's arms.

But I suspect Fernandez sees all that and thinks: We get to hit arms! Cool!"

Great win!

I great win on the road on the tail end of the back to back. This is a great sign to be able to grind out a win like this. Melo was sweet…he should be in any MVP discussion this season. Lawson was exposed a bit but he will be fine. I think Nene will be fine but for some reason he seems out of shape. He’ll work through it. It is going to be a fun season.

I didn’t get a chance to watch it either, but Melo certainly had a nice line. Maybe Nene needs to alter his name again to revive his game?

Good game.

Portland had the ball with 10 seconds to go down only one…I just kept seeing brandon roy hitting another game winner. Luckily…we somehow fouled Greg Oden’s old ass and he missed two freethrows and Melo sealed it.

Next few games shouldnt be bad. Then its Miami and Atlanta which could be tough games. Ready for JR Swish to come back.

And how could you not be up on Brandon Roy?! Arguably the 3rd best shooting guard in the league (Kobe, Dwade).

Tip of the Hat

goes to the Blazers fans who have had the good sportsmanship to jump on and congratulate the Nuggets. You guys have class.

Runningdonut, I saw that same play at the end with AC and had a premonition that Fernandez would end up wide open in the corner for a 3. We got lucky.

Yes, we do need another big. But when JR comes back it will prevent opponents from sagging in the middle and should open things up inside offensively as well as helping the rebounding stats.

Final point; it’s early, but Afflalo needs to start hitting his shots.

I am pulling for the guy for sure but it seems to me that Graham is more effective at this point as the fifth guard.

Afflalo is very young (24) and needs time to mature for sure.

But he also needs time on the floor to do so. I’d be willing to say he could be a bit shaky because he knows he’s expected to replace Dahntay Jones and Linas Kleiza to an extent … could be weighing on him a bit.

From what I gathered during the preseason Afflalo didn’t look all that bad. Of course he was also getting more minutes, but it’s still early. Still, it’d be nice to see him drop a few more.

But I could make a wish list of things I’d like to see improve from last night’s game, specifically on the boards.

A morning after

It still feels awesome, what a great win on the road.

As poorly as the rest of the Nuggets not named Carmelo Anthony played tonight, consider this:

- Portland was 34-7 at home last year.
- Portland, when leading going into the 4th last year, was 28-2. They led by 5. Nugs won by 3.
- Denver was on the second night of a travel back to back and did not arrive in Portland until 4 am. You can assume they probably did not get to their hotel to sleep until around 5:30-6.
- Denver got KILLED on the glass and still won.

Still, I would like to see:

- BETTER FT SHOOTING. 5 more FTs made and we win by 8. Not even a question at that points.
- Nene taking it stronger to the paint. He got stonewalled by Juwan Howard, seriously?
- Kenyon taking less “oh god my heart” jumpers. Been saying this forever.
- More TELEPORT. Lawson had 7 points, 2 assists, 1 steal on 3-5 shooting with 0 turns in 17 minutes of play.
- Carmelo. Just love ya, man. I was down on you last season. Consider my mouth firmly shut.

Look at LMA's stat line

Kmart was effective at what he is supposed to be effective at. Shutting down the oppositions best big. Nene was the problem with the interior last night.

What'd you think of the Lawson/Billups backcourt?

Asking Lawson to cover 6’6’’ Rudy Fernandez proved to be a disaster. I hope going forward Karl doesn’t ask Lawson to do the impossible.

i.e. Carter covering 6’8’’ Paul Pierce …

I think PDX was particularly bad match-up

defensively for Lawson (or Carter) / Billups back court. Since Miller can also work the post, and Roy can handle the ball . . Rudy created real match-up issues.

I suspect againt the most teams who have average 2g it won’t be a big deal. When Dallas goes small (JJ, Terry for Kidd), SA (parker), NO (paul), etc it won’t a problem.

Big strong 2s, like a Pierce/Rondo back court or Kobe/anyone will make it tough to play Billups on the two.

by Frontrange on Oct 30, 2009 2:03 PM MDT up reply actions

Gotta remember that the Nugs have the 6'4" JR Smith for next time

He will fix the too small back court issue for sure. Don’t get too riled up here. Great win without all the pieces. JR would have been huge in this game defensively.

Too many peices . .

Portland has figured out how to get everyone involved. Rudy and Roy were great but LMA disappeared, Webster vanished for long stretches despite looking good, Miller was basically non-existent.

They haven’t found the right chemistry yet to take advantage of their mismatchs.

by Frontrange on Oct 30, 2009 2:24 PM MDT up reply actions

Thank you Mr. Martin!

Carter covering Roy was a mismatch so bad, I wanted to buy a George Karl poster and burn it, then wrap the ashes in another GK poster and burn it again...

He made a fool of himself not putting out Afflalo, who nailed DWill. Even Joey Graham would be okay, as Joey reminds me of ’Tay, and ’Tay did a good job on Roy last year.

I already said this up above once. I don't believe size was our rebounding problem.

Nugs weren’t boxing out. They tried to go straight after the ball. That doesn’t work against long, athletic teams like Portland. I couldn’t count the number of times on my fingers that I saw Denver out-lengthed (I made up a word just like whoever it was on TNT) for a rebound cause they never got their guy on their hip. If you put your man on your hip, they can’t out-jump you.

Second that . . .

Portland’s twin towers keep pushing the big men around . . Portland wings ended up getting to the loose balls as well (e.g. Rudy).

Despite everyone complaining about Nene, I thought he did a pretty good job putting a body on the Oden / Joel, but the rebounding broke down when a big rotated to help out leaving a 7 footer alone underneath.

Hard to coach size . .this could be a problem.

by Frontrange on Oct 30, 2009 11:13 AM MDT up reply actions

I think this can be coached up a bit...

It was those rebounds by guys like Rudy that I found disturbing. The rebound ended up being a bit long, and I don’t feel Rudy was properly checked out. He should have never got to the ball.

I agree that our bigs do get pushed under the basket too often. Those are the rebounds that batted around like a volleyball b/c our big man is not in a good position to secure it, and it ends up in the hands of a guard/forward scrapping in the paint.

by Husker4Rockies on Oct 30, 2009 11:23 AM MDT up reply actions

denver needs shooting guards to rebound

with the roster they have right now. once jr gets back and graham-afflalo get oriented in the nuggets sytem things will be different. that was a big problem for denver last season giving other teams 2 and 3 chances on a single trip down the court.

Kenny the Jet

Anyone else agree with Kenny who said last night that Ty Lawson running the ball up the court to start the offense will open the bigs up for more scoring opportunities before the defense gets set since they are generally undersized but more athletic than most teams? This was in contrast to Chauncey who likes to “walk the ball up.”

by Magnus Opum on Oct 30, 2009 10:36 AM MDT reply actions

For sure. You could even see last night when Ty starting running that Bird started running with him.

Ty slowed the ball up on the example I’m talking about, but yes, his fast paced style will get the big going. Nene and Bird love to run and obviously K-Mart does as well.

But I just don’t see him winning it over Wade, Lebron or Kobe unless he drastically improves his defense and the Nuggets finish at least 2nd again this year in the West.

Also, the Nugs sure look like they’re gonna give the Lakers a solid run for their money. You can’t put another team in the West in front of the Nugs this year. The Nugs are the clear number two and they are even pushing the Lakers for the number one.

It is definately closing . . but

They added a lot of pieces . . Dice, Blair, Jefferson.

Having Mason and Hill at the end of the bench seemed pretty potent to me. I don’t think you can game plan that SA will shot 4-21 from deep.

If Duncan/Manu stay healthy, I’d be very worried. Duncan looked like the Duncan of old to me, not old Duncan last night.

by Frontrange on Oct 30, 2009 2:29 PM MDT up reply actions

I don't think they will stay healthy

Other than that, as a whole I don’t believe their players are as effective as the Nugs. Duncan – Old with bad feet Dice- Old with bad knees Blair – rookie – Jefferson – highly overrated Ginobili – superstar but very prone to injuries Parker – very effective but also prone to injuries Finley – Old and washed up.

Not much to say about this team but the NBA writers are in for a surprise that they will look back on and say “I shoulda seen this coming.”

AC

i know i know AC bashing again. But, come on!!!! i still don’t understand where the notion that AC is a GREAT defender started. he was no good last year and is already getting burned this year. 9 straight points by D. Will. in third? Does GK not see how crappy we have been starting the games? we only come back when he subs affalo in for AC. AC is a good back up ( not as good as lawson) lets leave him at his true posion, he is not a SG stopper. GK is really not giving our team the best chance to win here. we already have smallness issue with our bigs and he is making our guards small now. there is no reason for AC to be starting over affalo or grahm. One he gets burnt on the drive every time and then nene aka phantom foul magnet has to step up, so putting undo pressure on our bigs. Two makes a CB guard the much bigger 2s in the league and wears him out. i can already see this AC will start all year even when JR comes back. The best rotation will be CB affalo then jr and lawson coming off the bench. play CB 28 min a game for regular season so that he doesn’t wear out then lawson 20 min a game. put in AC in GARBAGE TIME.

by DigitalDaggers on Oct 30, 2009 1:02 PM MDT up reply actions

there was no foul basically is what i am saying, he was walking away from the play and as soon as we got the loose ball, foul NENE. Was funny how the TNT boys were trying to figure out who he fouled and at the end i think NBA texted them saying “drop it” and we heard not a single word on where the foul was. it’s sad since it was in the last minute of one possession game.

Second OMG we are getting five times the comments as we had in the denverstiffs site last year. GO NUGGS FANS

by EviBina on Oct 31, 2009 9:33 AM MDT up reply actions

by Gasus on Oct 31, 2009 10:57 AM MDT up reply actions

I agree on almost everything you said here

However, I believe Graham has been much more effective at the two than Afflalo.

by Gasus on Oct 30, 2009 1:34 PM MDT up reply actions

Red flags abound

I’m thrilled to win a game we had no business winning, but let’s face it there are some glaring issues that hopefully will work themselves out as the season gets into full swing.

First, we cannot continue to lean on Melo like that. Second, we were leaning on him in part because Chauncey looked tired or unconditioned or something. Was I the only one who looked at Chauncey last night and the word “old” popped into their head? It was kinda scary actually. I hope he has a little more pep in his step here soon. Third, the first offensive board was by Melo, I believe in the 3rd QUARTER! That’s inexcusable. Fourth, K-Mart looked lost and didn’t contribute to said offensive boards. Nene is also to blame for boards as is Birdman. And am I also the only one that thinks Birdman is doing too much of the intimidation type stuff and not focusing on his actual play? I don’t see him being as tenacious as he was last year yet here thru two games. Fifth, we CANNOT continue to put AC on opposing teams scorers. Why the hell was he on Roy late and not Afflalo or Graham??? That is mind boggling. He shouldn’t be on those guys PERIOD, much less when we need stops. Anytime defense is requried, AC’s ass should be on the bench. He’s too short and if we’re going to put a short guy on someone, I’d rather it be T Lawson, but no short PG should be on a taller guard, much less the other teams star.

I know we need JR back and Balkman coming back will be nice, but this has been a one man show so far aside from the contribution of Lawson in game 1. Nene was seriously clutch on that late offensive board and put back but other than that, the guy was nearly non-existent. Same for K-Mart and Birdman. Our front line really needs to step it up.

Nice win though either way. Go Nuggs!

by stiffy on Oct 30, 2009 1:01 PM MDT reply actions   1 recs

Nothing glaring here beside the obvious

I think everyone here agrees that AC shouldn’t even sniff the court. Aside from that last night was an extremely impressive win. There are maybe 3 other teams in the league that could do what the Nugs just did. Beat Utah at home in a late night game then go on the road to Portland the next night and pull out a win. Portland and Utah were both rested for their games against the Nugs. The Nugs beat both of them without their second most proficient scorer. You should be stoked on this win not down on some players. The only other teams that could pull what the Nugs just did are the Celtics, Lakers, and Magic.

It is gonna be a hell of a season and the Nugs just jumped up all the NBA writers power rankings. No way anyone can put them any lower than 4th in the entire league at this point (it would be a pretty big stretch to put the Magic ahead of them) and if they do they don’t have a clue what they are talking about!

by Gasus on Oct 30, 2009 1:42 PM MDT up reply actions

Melo and the scoring load ...

I agree on your point with Melo. The bench has three new guys who are still finding their place on the team (four if you want to toss Malik Allen in the mix.)

Melo is having to do a lot right now b/c Smith isn’t around. I am not too concerned right now, but I’d like to see things open up for the rest of the team going forward.

Denver gets a break until Sunday and then the Grizzlies come to town … I’d love to see a convincing win and a handful of guys in double-digits in the scoring department.

Webster vs. Melo

I think Portland wins if we keep Webster on Melo in crunch time. Big coaching error on Nate’s part to take him out/off.

Not trying to take anything away from Melo, he is a superstar and played great.

Looking forward to the rematch.

…and Kenyon was right…he should have gotten a delay of game instead of a technical…i love that guy, even if he plays for your Nuggets. :)

Right on with K-Mart!

I don’t care how much money Martin makes … I love the guy’s game. I’ve stated before that I nearly cried the day we traded for him (gave up too much when NJ wasn’t going to match anyway). But I liked Kenyon and his tough guy attitude since his days at Cincy.

Martin carries a lot of weight with the team and the home crowds and teammates feed off his energy.

Webster impressed me last night. Obviously he missed last season, but he didn’t take long to get right into the mix. He visably had Melo frustrated and I thought earned the right to stay in the game late with his play. Makes me a bit worried that Portland has yet another up-and-coming guy.

Great Game

Man what a game last night. Melo really stepped it up and cemented the “Im back” phrase he has been throwing around the last few months.

I loved Birdmans rejection of Rudy, yet again. He pretty much owns him by now.

Wish Lawson would have seen more time, and I wish AC woud have seen less, especially in the final moments of the game.

Where is Afflalo? I was really excited to see what this kid brings to the table and havn’t seen anything yet. Hopefully he settles in soon and steps his game up a bit.

Otherwise, it was just a really gritty, hard-fought game. I do want to adress something though. Roy is overrated. I’m just gonna say it. The way people talk about him you would think he is on par with Wade and Kobe at times. He had a chance to win the game last night and he didn’t do it. His team was even with ours, he had a chance to win and Melo was the one who ended up capitolizing. It’s not that I don’t think Roy is legit. He is well deserving of an All-Star spot, but I have seen no evidence whatsoever that he is any better than Stephen Jackson, Jo Johnson and other upper echelon SGs in the league.

by GoldenNugget on Oct 30, 2009 1:57 PM MDT reply actions

I'm watching Hornets-Kings

And I gotta say that the Kings suck like crap. Kevin Martin needs to learn to stop bricking shots, and they just need a good post scorer. The Hornets gave them numerous chances to win and the Kings decided to take advantage of that by missing shots. Last of all, they need to learn to not get their shots blocked by Okafor.

BTW, we play the Pacers in about a week.

My prediction: Nuggets 104, Pacers 95.

Danny Granger scores 48 points, but the rest of his squad sucks like crazy. Jeff Foster gets 1 rebound, 5 fouls, 3 turnovers. Pacers give him to Denver. Foster begins to kick @$$ again with the Nuggets.

The STIFF LIST (as of 8/30 by Andrew)

STIFF #1: J.R. SMITH
Remember when I wrote that J.R.'s "nine lives may be up"? Well, that was last January. With Denver police looking closely at J.R. allegedly attacking former 14er Damien Lolar at a recent Pepsi Center shoot-around, it's clear that J.R. will never mature and it's time to move him.

STIFF #2: LEON ROSE AND WORLDWIDE WES
After commandeering LeBron's departure from Cleveland, Rose and Wes are allegedly working to move Melo out of Denver. Let's hope the Nuggets do what's best for Denver and not these two franchise-destroyers.

STIFF #3: RIC BUCHER
The man who once guaranteed that Kobe Bryant had played his last game in a Lakers uniform has been gravy-training on other reporters' Melo-related stories all summer long. Who does Bucher think he is, a sports blogger?

STIFF #4: MARCUS JORDAN
Like father, like son. Last week, His Airness's 19-year-old son tweeted about dropping $50k at the Aria casino in Las Vegas prompting an investigation.

STIFF #5: INDIANA PACERS
Brandon Rush has been suspended five games for violating the NBA's drug policy and 2010 draftee Lance Stephenson was recently arrested on assault charges. Larry Bird sure is doing a great job re-shaping the Pacers' already shoddy image.
