Game 2 Preview & Thread: Nuggets at Blazers (8:30pm MDT)
Denver Nuggets at Portland Trail Blazers, Oct 29, 2009 8:30 PM MDT
What's the kid going to do for an encore? We'll quickly find out tonight how Ty Lawson, Carmelo Anthony and the rest of the Nuggets respond to their emotional opening night victory over the Utah Jazz. The Nuggets travel to the Rose Garden tonight to face their division rivals, the Portland Trail Blazers, in the Nuggets first back-to-back of the season.
Quick note: Blazers fans are plentiful on the internet ... please ignore any trolls, but feel free to get into some healthy debate and smack talk with opposing fans.
The "Rook" ...
I'm a stat man ... I love to look at numbers ... I don't know what they really mean, but they are always fun to look at. So, how did Ty Lawson's debut compare to the debut of another hearalded Denver rookie (Carmelo Anthony) ... let's see:

Sure, Melo's numbers weren't great, but they came against the defending champion San Antonio Spurs in a 80-72 win. The common theme here ... both Melo and Lawson helped their teams win the home opener and both guys started their careers a perfect 1-0. The other common thread ... Anthony Carter! A.C. started and played 10 minutes for the defending champs against the Nuggets in Melo's debut (Carter went 0-6 from the floor and had three turnovers ... no wonder he only played five games for the Spurs in the 2003-04 season.)
On the game thread last night I saw a couple of nicknames being discussed for Lawson. The name "Teleport" was being thrown around ... when Lawson enters the game one reader commented that we should call it, "Laying down the Lawson." In the game recap on ESPN they discussed Lawson's childhood nickname "Sparkplug" for his ability to come in and energize his teammates. Lawson commented in the story, "That might come back now."
(Feel free to toss out some nicknames in the game thread tonight ... let's see what sticks as the season wears on ...)
What's definitely coming is a big showdown tonight in Portland. Lawson will learn quickly that the NBA is a "what have you done for me lately?" business. The debut was great, but that was last night ... it's already time to look ahead.
I thought the most important thing for Lawson was getting his confidence going early on. When he first stepped on the floor he looked like he was trying to get rid of the ball as fast as he could. As the game wore on you could see that he was realizing that he belonged on the floor and he began to dominate.
Lawson will not face too many guards this season that he's matched up great with size-wise, but he is a strong kid. When he was covering Jazz shooting guard Ronnie Brewer in the post, Lawson was able to get under Brewer and wasn't allowing him to gain post position. Lawson may not be the biggest dog in the fight, but like the saying goes ... it's about the size of the fight in the dog and Lawson seems to have plenty. Steve Blake, 6'3'' and 175 pounds, and Andre Miller, 6'2'' and 200 pounds, will look to post up Lawson some, especially Miller who is a great posting guard. But Lawson will show us once again that his blinding speed and vision creates just as much of a mismatch.
I can't wait to see what Lawson does for an encore.
The Bigs
I was not overly impressed with the play of the Nuggets big men last night. Outside of Kenyon Martin's 16 points and 11 rebounds (6 offensive boards) I thought Nene and Chris Andersen could have played much better. Nene had a nice game scoring 16 points on 7-11 shooting, but his three misses could have been converted had he been more aggressive attacking the rim. Birdman got off to a slow start and he looks well ... slow. I know Bird was bothered early in the pre-season with a leg injury and that could be why he looked like he bathed in concrete before the game, but Denver will need him tonight against Portland's twin towers and athletic power forward.
Denver must control the boards tonight. In Portland's first game against the Rockets October 27th, they dominated Houston on the glass to a 51-33 advantage. Former number one overall draft pick Greg Oden grabbed 12 rebounds (4 offensive) and collected 5 blocks ... he also turned the ball over 7 times and committed 5 fouls. Denver must find a way to get Oden out of sync and must get a body on him as soon as shots are going up.
The Stars
Denver got 55 points from Melo and Chauncey Billups last night, 30 and 25 respectfully, which accounted for 48% of the scoring load. It'd be nice to see the bench catch a little fire outside of Lawson tonight and score more than a combined 25 points. But the stars are there to shoulder the load ... it'll be interesting to see how Portland decides to defend the Nuggets.
Reading the great work done by Ben Golliver over at Blazers Edge it appears the Blazers are concentrating more on defense this season and did a great job rotating to the ball against the Rockets. Oden commented that he felt like he was part of an energetic and cohesive unit. The Nuggets must get out and run and get themselves some easy buckets to combat against this "newfound" Portland defense.
And speaking of defense ... Brandon Roy didn't enjoy too much success against the Nuggets last season. Roy recorded his second lowest scoring average against the Nuggets with a modest 13.8 points per game last season. The only team he scored worst against was the Boston Celtics, but he played Boston only once and scored 12 points. Roy faced Denver four times and of the eight teams Roy faced four times last season, he put up his worst scoring numbers by far against Denver. To wit, Roy torched the seven other teams for a scoring average of 25.1 points per game (the Spurs and Jazz among them) ... nearly three points above his season average of 22.6 ppg. As Roy goes ... so usually goes the Blazers, it'll be important for Denver to continue to defend Roy well. (But who will get that assignment?)
Final Thoughts ...
It was great getting the first win out of the way early because the Rose Garden is a very difficult place to play in. The Blazers were 34-7 last season at home and are already 1-0 there this season. If Melo continues to play with the fire we saw last night and the team can rally around its star then a early season road win could be in the works ... a win could go a long way towards re-capturing the Northwest division title come April. To paraphrase Billups last season, every game determines playoff seeding.

Looking forward to this.
I am eager for the Nuggets to put Portland and their fans in their place, but I would not be surprised if Portland put us in ours. I do believe we can win tonight, but I would be satisfied with a close loss so long as we see some more effort out of Nene and Birdman.

As a blazer fan
I believe this will be one of our hardest games. Glad the nuggets are coming off a draining match up against the jazz the night before. Nene and Birdman are not what concern me as a blazer fan, it is melo. Ever since Billups joined up with him the nuggets went from a fast paced losing team, to a team that can win in almost any situation. Our biggest weakness in Portland is perimeter defense. If Billups and Melo both have all star level games, the odds are against Portland. However if either one of them loses their rythem, the Blazers are likely to defend home court. In this matchup, I would consider the home team the favorite every game. I would be really shocked if this game is not close and hard fought in the fourth quarter with several high light reel plays. The most likely weakness for Denver is that the bench is relatively short. The first few players are very good, but after that it goes downhill quickly. If the nuggets get whistled for more than a few fouls in the first quarter, the blazers will have a strong edge to push. Andre bringing the post up game against Lawson should be very effective. If we can force the nuggets to play more than nene/mart/birdman at the 4/5 slots we’ll have a good shot at controlling the boards and dictating the flow of the game. If that happens, it will be up to Melo to show why he is a better basketball player than KD. (It’s because he finds ways to win)

3 things
1. Ty Lawson nickname idea: Nightcrawler? Yeah, a bit wierd, but it follows that teleportation idea. I’m not a huge X-Men fan but I always thought Nightcrawler was bad ass. Bonus; he also is made up of blue skin and yellow eyes! http://marvel.com/universe/Nightcrawler
2. I am not an insutling type of a person, but I have come to the conclusion that Portland fans are a complete joke. So if you do want to take trash to them, be careful, logic doesn’t really apply to thier arguments.
4. We are better than Portland. From every aspect of the game. Each player we have is better then theirs at each position, including the bench. The only advantage they have is at the coaching position. We should be able to beat them tonight and I expect us to beat them tonigh.

Ouch
Pretty broad statement there Mr. Nugget.
I like the statement that logic does not apply to Blazer fans, but that every player and every aspect of the Nuggets are better (mascot too I suppose). Great balanced objectivity.
You should be very proud of the Nuggets, and emerging last year atop the Northwest Division meatgrinder is a special achievement.
Good luck tonight.

Rocky in the Bomb
In terms of mascot, there is no doubt that Rocky is better than whoever they have in Portland. Rocky is in the mascot hall of fame. He is by far the best mascot I’ve seen live. Rocky has even been invited into opposing teams facilities for games. How often do you see an opposing teams mascot at road games?

how do you know?
I’m positive you happen to be right though. i freaking hate the mascot and would just prefer the blazer dancers and stunt team.

Being a Blazers fan...
I just got to say that was a well-written Preview. I get so tired of reading previews that just bash the other team instead of saying the things that your team needs to do to win.
Now in response to #4 of your three things. I will give you the SF spot, Carmelo is a top 10 talent in this league but after that… it gets harder for me to agree with you. stat wise I would have to say that a Miller-Billups comparison is a wash, and Aldridge is statistically better than Martin as well as being more durable. Center is yet to be determined, based on various stats and such Pryzbilla is a better rebounder and shotblocker than Nene but obviously is an inferior offensive option, and Oden is unproven. Now who exactly on your team is a better SG than former R.O.Y, 2x All-Star, and All-NBA 2nd teamer Brandon Roy? Just wondering…

Blazers dominate at SG, Nuggets dominate at SF.
I’d take LA over Kmart, but Billups is a stud. Better than Andre, and much better than Blake. When Billups is off the floor and Andre is on it, that will provide a real challenge for Denver D. Nene and Birdman are a good combination, but I’d give the edge to Oden/Prizbilla, though Oden has yet to prove if that call is correct.

Miller and Billups a WASH?
you are smoking crack. you have to remember that those of us that are multiyear season ticket holders had to watch teams play 2-3 zone tight defense when Miller was here because he CANT hit a 3 to save his mom. With Billups teams can’t do that…and BTW he was a FINALS MVP.

We know Miller, as he played here for several years
He is great on lay-ups but can’t shoot to save his life. His defense is mediocre at best and absolutely terrible at worst. He usually over-dribbles and always wants to be the person who brings the ball up-court.

Blazers won't have an issue with that
because so many other players can hit the three.
However, I would definitely rate Billups at a much higher level. Not only that, but he’s meshing with his team and Miller/Roy aren’t yet.

I respectfully scoff
at the comment that the nuggets are better at every position. I’d have to cede you the PG position, anybody who’s been awake over the past decade knows how good Chauncey is, and as for SF, Melo is a beast, but Brandon Roy is the best player on the court. No question. Blazers also win at PF, sorry, but K Mart is past his prime and LaMarcus barely outside the top 5 PFs in the league (Gasol, Garnett, Dirk, Bosh, Boozer). As for the bench, Lawson had a good night, the Birdman is a fairly good rebounder and defender, but c’mon, you can’t be serious to say that Ty is better than Andre Miller, and Prizzy will always beast the Birdman. After Prizzy and Dre, we’ve got T Law and Rudy. I suppose that the claim is that Renaldo Balkman has talent and that Afflalo can hold a candle to even a fatigued Rudy. Gotta give the Blazers the edge in individual match ups.
And if that ain’t enough logic for you, home court. I will be at the Garden screaming my face off with 20,000 other fans, and Denver knows just how loud we can make our house.
Nice dunk for Melo btw, I don’t think that’ll be topped for a bit, but I can only hope that this season gets even more exciting and we get top 10’s full of that kind of facializing beastery!
Let’s gear up for some awesome ballin from the two of the top four in the conference!

Actually, Melo versus Roy is a huge ?
With fans of both teams pretty sure their guy is “the Man”. . that is why they play the games.
Melo and Roy are both fighting to move from the second tier super stars (Dirk, Pierce, etc) to the Wade/Lebron/Kobe range . . .this season both could get their or niether.

I have very little knowledge of basletball.
Should be a good litmus test for Portland. Frankly, I haven’t been happy with how the Blazers came out the gate against Houston. That should have been 30 point demolition even with the Houston players playing scrappy and to their full potential (I was impressed with their desire to win that game). The new players definitely seem more disruptive than I expected it to be. Injuries during preseason definitely didn’t help the blazers find a groove.

i pity the foooo. denver will need rebounding from the 2 guard position. graham played well in limited minutes and afflalo was on the court during the 4th quarter rally against utah. billups, ac and ty can dominate miller and blake while graham and afflalo will try to contain roy. allen and balkman did not play last night but if nene and kmart have foul trouble karl might not have a choice about playing them. read where nene had a strained calf muscle toward the end of the first half which limited him in the second half. blocking out by the bigs will be key. joel THE VANILLA GORILLA pryzbilla had 16 boards last game with 6 on the offensive end.

The Blazers
Have a number of new players in the mix.
Batum is out injured. YOu might scoff at a guy who only played 16 minutes or so a game, but this guy was the perimeter defensive specialist. He would guard 1-4 and generally had great success at tossing the star player off their rhythm. With him gone the starting unit is a little disjointed and weakened defensively. Surprisingly this defense was picked up a little by the two SF’s that were behind him.
Webster is back. He looks good but definitely rusty and a little out of place at times. Athletically he’s great, his rustiness is more about position and spacing.
Outlaw played defense??? This is a guy the blazer fans have ragged on for being a one dimensional scorer. Against Houston he showed a game that was not only excellent on offense, but decent on defense. I don’t suspect a repeat performance, but if he did the nuggets could be in trouble. His knock is also consistency as in he doesn’t have it.
Oden is back in the starting line up after a failed attempt at it last year. He’s been staying out of foul trouble nicely during preseason and the first game and the calls are no longer ones that make blazer fans want to kick him in the shins. Oden had a rough game against Houston, or rather they were fantastic with him. They didn’t have bigs to man up on him, but worked position and poking the ball away for the turnovers. I expect he’ll be more on guard for that tonight. he will be difficult to contain as his main damage is defense and the shots he alters. offensively he takes care of the trash, but isn’t an offensive focus yet (and some blazer fans would argue he should be).
Aldridge looks decent. I’d say he’s the key. If he gets hot, no one can stop him…
Roy has been off and still looks off. Not only his play, but he’s not meshing with all the players. It’s created stagnation and this is something Denver should capitalize on.
Miller is in the mix. He and Roy have not blended yet and there are issues when they’re both on the floor together.
Rudy has a sore back. He’s a spark plug off the bench and has helped his Spanish team in putting a lot of points in people’s faces (something he’s claimed he loves to do).
Overall the blazers are still figuring out the pecking order and plays. It hasn’t been as smooth as the fans would like and in this state Denver has a good chance of winning against the Blazers on their home court.
Most Blazer fans are watching this expecting the game to go either way and really using this as a measurement as to where the team is at, at the moment. The Blazers surprised fans with their decent play for 3 quarters against houston (surprise because the preseason was painful), and lamented the killer instinct need to just shut the door in Houston’s face.
Should be a good game. I am now returning to my regularly scheduled illogical program.

I see guys like Afflalo and Graham and Naldo that didn’t play much yesteraday contributing a lot. Chauncey is too old to have two straight 25-point games. I’m expecting about 11 points and 4 assists per game in 20 minutes for Lawson if GK can continue to, in his words “ride whoever’s hot.” (/turns off pervert machine)

If Ty Lawson scores 30 points on Andre Miller, I'll buy myself a Ty Lawson jersey and a large poster of him
If he score 40+, I’ll wear that jersey every time I watch a Nuggets game. And you have to consider that I also have a Mutombo, Melo, ‘Dre, NENE, and Chauncey jersey. I’d have some of the ‘80s players if I was alive back then (my parents don’t care a thing about the NBA/basketball)

I have a crazy theory...
Is the front office having a say here, maybe to boost AC’s trade value? He could be a “Bruce Bowen” for a sucker team?
AC is playing like he wants to show he's better than Lawson
and he’s not! and he’s playing like shit! which isnt any different…but he’s forcing shit…trying to be Ty. Joey should be starting…he only played like 12 mins last night…he should be guarding Brandon Roy!

He’ll shoot a lower percentage and his production will take a serious hit coming from a guy who’s numbers were always inflated from playing 35+ mins a night
i read something up on Slam recently that said he had one of the slowest times on the team in the running dept. Something like how he didn’t even meet team conditioning standards, but since he was already a proven NBA player he got the pass.

With Melo and JR
If we had a Center where as we could have an inside out game we would be awesome
theory....
I have a theory about 30 year old Running Backs and 30 something 7 (ish) footers, which usually states that they don’t have much left in the tank and you will see a rapid decline in their play.
Are we seeing this in Birdman? He looks a step slower and his leaping is not what it once was. I hope I’m wrong bcuz I really like CA but he doesn’t look very good.
maybe...
but to be honest…he was never very good in the first place. EXTREMELY good help-defender, but poor on-ball defender coupled with no offensive game other than cleaning up garbage explains why he’s never sniffed a starting lineup, even if he was 2nd in the league in blocks last year. And if he’s a step slower and he can’t leap as well, he’s basically lost the one thing that justified his PT, which was his exceptional help defense. Hopefully it’s just offseason rust though.
Hopefully because that really is his whole game. We shall see

Huh?
When the HECK did Chauncey get 20 points? All i remember was him hitting one 3, and like 10 FTs. o_o
Exactly.
Portland was 34-7 at home last year and this a travel back to back game for the Nugs. You have to applaud the effort tonight.
Swats.
All we need is a burst
Last night it was just 4-5 minutes of hustle that gave us a win
by runningdonut on Oct 29, 2009 11:01 PM MDT up reply actions
hmm...
everyone is saying how great we’d be with JR back…but he’s killed our games occasionally too.
Wow...I was even a minute late on my thoughts...
…and Bird is gonna get retroactive flagrant points for that…
Guys. 7 points and 7 minutes to play. Don't panic yet.
If it gets to 14, then we can resign it.
Swats.
Love the positive attitude ... sounds like me last night.

Melo
playing okay, but he needs to learn to pass. He’s reminding me of the Melo of the past tonight. It’ll be interesting to see how many FG’s he has taken. These officials are questionable as well.
not saying he's hurting us.
obviously he’s keeping us in the game but he seems to be taking the challenge that Webster’s giving him might be getting too personal.

If we traded for Rudy would that be something you might be interested in?

Theyve been calling that all game
Time to adjust
by runningdonut on Oct 29, 2009 11:11 PM MDT up reply actions
YES
At least Petro is going to foul rather than just give up the second shots
by runningdonut on Oct 29, 2009 11:12 PM MDT up reply actions
Dhantay Jones
definately missing him right about now. Afflalo isn’t close to him
Actually
Pullup transition 3s are really what got us momentum and all when we were down most of last season…just doesn’t work as well on the road.
Blake and AC in
Epic battle for who’s worst
by runningdonut on Oct 29, 2009 11:14 PM MDT reply actions 1 recs
couldn't
agree more. He was pretty good back in the day with the Nugs
by higgyhoops12 on Oct 29, 2009 11:16 PM MDT up reply actions
I was just saying
Blake is having a miserable day, he hasn’t given the Blaze anything tonight. AC has at least done a few things well
by runningdonut on Oct 29, 2009 11:21 PM MDT up reply actions
lol
not sure, and if he wasn’t.. It’s still his fault!
by higgyhoops12 on Oct 29, 2009 11:18 PM MDT up reply actions
I think we're trying to stop Roy and Rudy from burying us
Not that AC is the answer or anything
by runningdonut on Oct 29, 2009 11:15 PM MDT up reply actions
Melo is an absolute beast
when he is in shape!
Why in the hell did GK put Carter in for Lawson?? Get AAA on Fernandez!!! For the life of me I wish that we wouldn’t have resigned AC so that we didn’t have to deal with this BS again this year!
Alright all tied up with 4 left. Go NUGS!!!
This
would be a huge win. Especially without J.R.
refs
have f’d up a ton of calls tonight. I wouldn’t mind the ticky tack shit if it wasn’t so inconsistent.
by higgyhoops12 on Oct 29, 2009 11:21 PM MDT up reply actions
Hmm...
Anyone else notice that Melo’s shot stroke looks a little different this year? It looks like he’s shooting from even HIGHER above his head or elevating his body even HIGHER and STRAIGHTER…or something. Just me?
yeah
he doesn’t seem to fade as much as he used to.
He’s also going to the rim stronger than ever. We’ll see if it stays the same the rest of the season.
by higgyhoops12 on Oct 29, 2009 11:22 PM MDT up reply actions
Preseason is going to haunt us
Petro should have gotten so significant pt just for this occassion
Nice
Bad foul on Miller. Now Portland fans get to see the joy of Andre Miller and late game situations
Both teams
need to work on staying on their feet. There have been tons of calls because of being off balance after a pump fake
pray
that it doesn’t go into over time

And Melo's
on fire from the charity strike. 16-17

LMAO
“Jeremy (Roundball Mining Co./TrueHoop Network):
This game may not end until it is time to take my daughter trick or treating.”
Nene had position
Such a weak effort on that rebound, nice job by Oden but Nene is fucking pathetic right now
damn right. was thinkin the same thing. If only one offensive board, let that be the one (or, hopefully, the next one)

NENE!!
two offensive rebounds and a bucket! I never thought I would see this happen. Pinch me!
Only if we win!!
Which would be a miracle the way we’ve rebounded.

ALRIGHT DENVER
Something need to be done now. SOMEONE, GK OR CHAUNCEY, draw up some kind of play out of this timeout!
AC
what the hell is he doing in the game?
it kills me when after a play like that at such a crucial time thye all walk back to the bench with a smile on their face. I’m making up my own combination of curses and they’re smiling.
Follow the Penguins on SBN @ Pensburgh.com and twitter.
I don't think they're smiling cause they're happy
That’s a shot that Chauncey will make 9 times out of 10. They all know it. Yelling and cursing doesn’t help anyone. They knew they had to just forget about it and worry about making a stop.
IF
we put AC on Roy I give up on Karl. again
Haven't we had this discussion on the Row?
I was convinced that we’d see both Blazer FTs drop, not miss…
Well now Oden is on the line. I’ll take that of anyone
Follow the Penguins on SBN @ Pensburgh.com and twitter.
lol i called it
great foul by K-Mart.
Thank you refs.
think that’s what they were just sayin. He shot left-handed too.
Follow the Penguins on SBN @ Pensburgh.com and twitter.
eh, why risk the foul? let Melo take the hot shot. He’s feelin it tonight
Follow the Penguins on SBN @ Pensburgh.com and twitter.
Ok We're safe for now.
ONE stop D!!!!

DAMN
I had a flashback of Roy vs. Houston just then. Almost the exact same spot. Sigh…I called the 40 pt game though. Phew
Overtime without Nene and Kenyon
We had no chance. Seriously huge win props Melo props
by runningdonut on Oct 29, 2009 11:45 PM MDT up reply actions
I can't believe we won that game.
Right now- 2 gms in, Melo’s MVP. He’s a diffrent player- talk about “eye of the tiger”? LOL

OHHHHHHHHHHH YEAAAAAAAAHHHHHHh
The taste of victory is sooooooooooooo sweeeeeeeeeeeeeet.
How’s the bitter taste portland?
This is what good teams do.
Even though they get beat statistically in most categories they grind it out and find a way to win.

GK coached this game well
Good win good composure not the best effort but CLUTCH play wins it

This is a guy who won the NCAA as a freshman!!!
We now see the “Syracuse-version” of Melo, absolutely focused & unstoppable.

Can we bend the laws of the NBA
And extend the game length to 101 minutes so he can set a new scoring record?
LOL
"I always believe there's a reason why you go through everything." -John Elway
WOW WOW WOW
We play on the road on the 2nd night of a back 2 back after getting in at 5 am, No JR Smith, take 20 less shot’s than the opponent, and only 2 players in double digit scoring. Can you say championship caliber team?
And gotta love melos interview, " All that matters is the gold ball."
Amazing
Melo's on Fire
and no one’s going to douse him. I was on my LDS mission in 2003 and had no time for sports (that sucked) so I don’t have any recollection of his exploits at Syracuse. Nevertheless, he is unshakable, much like Brian Dawkins for my beloved Broncos. Let’s hope the Broncos go 7-0 and remain unbeaten like the Nuggets! Ty Lawson is a special player as well and Billups remains unflappable. Portland will matter well into the postseason so this was a huge win for Denver, especially considering the extent to which they were on the ropes.
