Team USA vs Argentina Game Thread

To quote the great American philosopher Tommy Callahan III, “It’s go time!”

The Redeem Team faces what I believe will be their most stringent test this morning against the defending Olympic champions, Argentina.  Heading into the game it is safe to say that I am confident of the outcome.  As long as Team USA continues to prepare for every game, play hard on defense and quite simply take every team they play as a threat I believe they will cruise to the gold medal.

However, Argentina has the top level talent, experience and confidence that can help them challenge the US in the semifinals.  Plus they have the most dangerous player that does not play for Team USA, the despised Manu Ginobili.  If there is a player that can carry his team to a stunning upset, it is ol’ baldy.  The ability Manu has to score from outside, from midrange and in the paint, as well as to break down the defense and make the perfect pass to an open teammate, is troubling to my soul.

Kobe Bryant will undoubtedly draw the defensive assignment on Ginobili and I expect the “Doberman” to play hard, but he has not proven to be a lock down defender over the past few games.  Even if Kobe has a great defensive game I do not think he can shut down a healthy Manu who can still dominate a game even if he does not score.  The US will have to pressure Manu when he has the ball and collapse on him when he gets in the lane while recovering back out to the three point line to close out whoever he may kick a pass out to.

I fully expect the US to handle Argentina, but even though this group is missing players like Pepe Sanchez and Walter Hermann I have a fear of Argentina that I do not have for Spain, Greece or Lithuania.

The US gained some revenge on Greece for the loss in the World Championships a couple of years ago and tomorrow they get a chance to avenge their semifinal loss to Argentina from the 2004 Olympics.  There is no chance the Redeem Team takes this game lightly considering not only the loss four years ago, but the fact that Argentina is the only team to defeat the US twice since NBA players began playing in international competition.

I have full confidence in the US to win this game and win the gold, but if the game is close in the second or third quarter, or God forbid the fourth, I will be worried enough to start chewing my fingernails.

I will not be able to live blog this one due to the fact the game is on while I am at work so let’s do a game thread.  Leave your thoughts below while we cheer the Team USA on to the gold medal game and watch Manu sulk away to play for the bronze.

Of course, there is always the chance that Ginobili is carrying a two by four from a tree in the Petrified Forest.

Good Start

I get to work and fire up the video stream and the first play I see is Melo hitting a three to put hte US up 27-9 with about a minute left in the third quarter. It looks like I have already missed the most competitive part of the game.

US up 30-12 at the end of one quarter

and Manu appears to be hurt. Either his foot or his ankle.

by Jeremy on Aug 22, 2008 8:45 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Actually 30-11

Nocioni’s runner at the end of the quarter was changed to a two point shot.

I would love to know what the Argentines are thinking

While they are talented and the defending Olympic champs do they honestly believe in their hearts that they have a shot to win this game? Especially with Manu hobbled.

Everything going right for the US

Melo actually drew an offensive foul on Carlos Delfino!

by Jeremy on Aug 22, 2008 8:50 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Melo hits another three

Puts the US up 37-18 with eight minutes left in the second quarter.

by Jeremy on Aug 22, 2008 8:52 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Argentina certainly is not giving up

Nocioni just busted his can down the floor to break up a two on one break with Melo and Kobe by blocking a dunk attempt by Kobe. Of course, if Kobe had just thrown it down instead of trying ot reverse it, Noc would have had no chance of stopping them.

by Jeremy on Aug 22, 2008 8:54 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Argentina cuts it to 12

They have switched to a 2-3 zone as well. US needs to get a couple of buckets.

by Jeremy on Aug 22, 2008 8:57 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

One thing that bugs me about Team USA

is they take a lot of unecessary fouls and tend to get in the bonus early.

by Jeremy on Aug 22, 2008 8:59 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Melo hits two free throws to make the lead 10 again

and zone buster Michael Redd is in the game.

by Jeremy on Aug 22, 2008 9:02 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Kobe hits a three

and I think we are going to have a US run coming up here…

by Jeremy on Aug 22, 2008 9:03 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Two more free throws for Melo

and the US is back up by 13. Melo is only 2-7 but he has ten points. (I even wrote he made both before he made both. He is shooting well enough from the line that I cannot even jinx him. Of course, that probably just jinxed him.)

by Jeremy on Aug 22, 2008 9:06 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

The refs are letting Argentina play very physically

and they are taking advantage. US only up 8 after a turnover by Paul along the sideline turns into a fast breka dunk.

by Jeremy on Aug 22, 2008 9:07 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Tayshaun Prince is guarding Scola

I think he needs some help on the block. Scola scores back to back hoops and the lead is down to 6. No US run like I predicted.

by Jeremy on Aug 22, 2008 9:08 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Melo hits three free throws to put hte US back up 9 at the half

Argentina outscored the us 29-19 in the second quarter without Ginobili playing a second. It was an impressive display, but I doubt that they can keep it up.

by Jeremy on Aug 22, 2008 9:13 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Foul trouble a big factor

One reason why Argentina made a run in the second was because LeBron, Wade, Bosh and Howard were all watching from the bench with two fouls. With those guys free to play more in the second half I think the US regains control of this game.

by Jeremy on Aug 22, 2008 9:14 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Melo had 10 of the US's 19 in the second quarter

That includes a 7-7 performance from the free throw line.

by Jeremy on Aug 22, 2008 9:26 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Second half about to start

The US sure could use a nice run to open things up like they had against Australia to shake some of Argentina’s new found confidence.

by Jeremy on Aug 22, 2008 9:27 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Key defensive matchup

Melo is on Scola who owned the paint late in the second quarter.

by Jeremy on Aug 22, 2008 9:28 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Howard back in the game and making an impact

He is 2-2 on a tip in and little jump hook to push the lead back up to 13.

by Jeremy on Aug 22, 2008 9:29 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

The US is scoring at the rim

which is a good sign agter they tend to get jump shot happy with the short three point line. Lead at 11 and the US has the ball.

by Jeremy on Aug 22, 2008 9:32 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Dwight Howard is dominating the paint on offense

and just drew an intentional foul on Nocioni with a sissy slap to his torso after gtting an offensive rebound. Too bad Howard, cannot make his free throws…oh he made the second!

by Jeremy on Aug 22, 2008 9:35 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Howard gets an easy dunk

after some great ball movement by the US.

by Jeremy on Aug 22, 2008 9:36 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Wade in the game for Howard

I am not sure I like that move. Howard has been a beast in the third quarter.

by Jeremy on Aug 22, 2008 9:37 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

After Melo hits a bunch of free throws

he is leveld at the other end by Scola on a play that was clearly an offensive foul. Bosh checks in for him.

by Jeremy on Aug 22, 2008 9:41 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Melo back in for Lebron

very short rest for our boy.

by Jeremy on Aug 22, 2008 9:42 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Scola is a one man wrecking crew

whether it is in the paint or on the perimeter he is keeping Argentina within shouting range all by himself.

by Jeremy on Aug 22, 2008 9:44 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Scola just picked up his third foul

If the US can get one more on him in the next couple of minutes it will be a big deal. He will have to play a little less aggressively.

My feed is really getting on my nerves

I have not seen much of the last three minutes or so.

by Jeremy on Aug 22, 2008 9:48 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

From what I have managed to see

since Wade checked in the game, he has been a force on the offensive glass. Now if only he could make his free throws…

by Jeremy on Aug 22, 2008 9:49 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Melo is working hard on the offenseive glass on free throws

and he is getting thrown around because of it. Scola grabbed him a few minutes ago and he just was thrown down and nearly trampled on the last free throw by Wade. Lucky for Melo it went in or he might have had someone’s Nikes in his mug.

by Jeremy on Aug 22, 2008 9:51 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Delfino is helping Scola out

He has made two or three threes in the third quarter.

by Jeremy on Aug 22, 2008 9:52 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Argentina weathers the US onslaught and is only down 16 heading to the fourth

I doubt the final margin will be less than 10, but if the US wets the bed here anything can happen.

by Jeremy on Aug 22, 2008 9:55 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Scola finally misses a 16 footer

“You see he is human! You can hurt him!” (lame attempt at a Rocky IV reference)

by Jeremy on Aug 22, 2008 10:00 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

LeBron has scored seven in the fourth so far

and the US is up by 19…I think. If only this video feed would resemble video instead of a still frame picture.

by Jeremy on Aug 22, 2008 10:00 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Beautiful drive and dish by Paul to Wade

puts the lead back up to 17 with three minutes left

by Jeremy on Aug 22, 2008 10:09 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

If I lose my feed one more time I am going to smash my computer

So if I never post anything ever again, you guys will know why.

by Jeremy on Aug 22, 2008 10:10 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

The lead is back up to 20 with a minute left

and now the question is will the US cover? I think the spread was 19 1/2.

by Jeremy on Aug 22, 2008 10:11 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Degenerate Gamblers all over the world who bet on the US rejoice

as the last shot from Argentina clangs off the rim ensuring a US cover. This episode of Great Moments in Gambling History was made possible by donations from your local mafia.

The Gold Medal Game is set

The two most talented teams in the tournament will face off Saturday night/Sunday morning with the US attempting to regain their former glory by defeating the Spaniards.

by Jeremy on Aug 22, 2008 10:16 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

One more thing...

I love how the US celebrates, or does not celebrate after wins. The Spainish team looked like a bunch of pre teens who just won free tickets to a Hannah Montana concert. The US looked like they still had plenty of work to do. I like it.

Redemption is only 40 minutes away.

Wow

I felt like I was watching the game live, kind of.
You must I hope you do this for the finale game
I’ll be on the road while the game is on and wont be able to watch.
But I can get this website on my phone so it should work out.

THE STIFF LIST (as of 11/20 by Andrew)

STIFF #1: THE NEW JERSEY NETS
The bad get worse.  Starting out 0-12, these Nets are doing a great imitation of the 1997-98, 11-win Nuggets.  I might have to pay someone to take my Nets tickets when they come to Pepsi Center.

STIFF #2: ALLEN IVERSON
I hate to kick one of my favorite players while he's down, but when even the Knicks won't sign you, you belong on the Stiff List.

STIFF #3: THE SAN ANTONIO SPURS
Richard Jefferson?  Antonio McDyess?  DeJuan Blair?  A healthy Manu Ginobili?  Big deal.  What idiot thought these guys would be neck-and-neck with the Lakers and way better than the Nuggets?  (Oh wait, that would be me.)

STIFF #4: TRACY MCGRADY
After years of suspect handling of his injuries making it virtually impossible for the Rockets to trade him, McGrady goes head-to-head with Rockets coach Rick Adelman demanding to know what his "future" with the organization is.  Tracy, take your league-high $23.2 million and shut the @#$% up.

STIFF #5: DAVID KAHN
Defiant and stubborn as ever, the Timberwolves "president" defended his offseason moves (you know, drafting two point guards before Brandon Jennings not named Brandon Jennings) by proclaiming that the Wolves will be active during next summer's free agent market.  I just pray that Wolves owner Glen Taylor never fires this guy so the Nuggets have four guaranteed wins each season.
