Bye Bye Ty

The Nuggets draft picture just became a little murkier.

There were rumors floating around that University of North Carolina point guard Ty Lawson had been given a promise from the Nuggets that they would draft him with the 20th selection.  Both Lawson’s camp and the Nuggets denied the rumor and yesterday we found out that it was indeed a rumor as Lawson withdrew his name from the draft.

Even though the 20th pick was thought to be a little too high for Lawson it did seem to be a good fit as Lawson excels at leading the fast break and playing at a fast pace.  At this point I have not really decided who I would like to see the Nuggets target with their pick.

All I knew was that I was not comfortable with drafting Lawson with the 20th pick.  My number one issue with him was he is not a good perimeter shooter.  Between Andre Miller, Anthony Carter and Junior Harrington, I have had enough of point guards who cannot hit an open 20 footer.

The facts that Lawson was happy with one good performance at the Orlando Pre-Draft Camp that led him to sit out the last two days, was busted for underage drinking while being behind the wheel of his car and his no show at a workout for the Nuggets caused me to loose even further interest.

As someone who was worried the rumors of a Nuggets/Lawson connection were true, count me relieved he will be playing another year at North Carolina.

Ugh

Let me just say that I’m pissed as hell at the Lakers for making me cheer for them in this series and then laying an egg. Instead, we’re stuck with another few months of KG’s faux-tensity and Paul Pierce. Ugh ugh ugh. Not to mention Boston’s “fans”. When do we get pink Celtics hats to go with the Pink Sox hats? Plus, what kind of message does it send to the children that they can grow up in a world where Doc Rivers is a championship coach and Danny Ainge is a championship GM? That’s just wrong.

/off-topic rant.

Jeremy, who are you looking at at #20? I was for Lawson. If we go PG, Chalmers is our only real option. He’s ok, but I don’t get the hype that some have given him. I’ve seen him play CU twice every year for the past few years and never really walked away saying “Wow”. I’m in the best player available category, which will probably be a swingman. I’d love it if Rush fell to us, but doubt that happens. Chris Douglas-Roberts would look good in blue, but he doesn’t fill our outside shooting need. All I want is for us to NOT draft a foreign big man. None of them are worth it that will be there at 20.

Re: Draft

Chalmers has been on my mind as a potential pick, but I agree that while he is a solid player there are better talents to be had at that spot. I have three more recap posts to whip out and then I will start focusing on the draft. However, tomorrow I will have to make a pick for the Nuggets in the mock draft Ridiculous Upside is running. As of this time I am thinking big based on the players that should be available, but at this time, I do not have a single player in mind. We will all just have to wait and see who I pick.

re: Draft

I’m not a fan of any of the bigs that will be available. Kofos is a stiff. Hibbert could be ok, but he doesn’t fit in our style. DeAndre Jordan could be worth it if he slips, but has too much bust potential to me. I’d rather us take a solid player with the pick who can help us out off of the bench like Kleiza. Look at the Lakers, they have Farmar, Walton and Turiaf, all who were late first or early second rounders only because they didn’t have “tremendous upside potential”.

Lakers failed the Western Conference

I was really torn between the two teams in the finals. I really did not want either to win. Part of me was pulling for the Lakers simply because it makes me nuts when the eastern conference fans argue that the east is just as good as the west because they have won the title three out of the last five seasons.

The everlasting memory I will hold in my mind from these finals is KG’s post game “interview” with Michelle Tafoya. That was awkwardly hilarious as you could tell KG could not put together a single coherent thought yet it was obvious the director kept telling Michelle to keep asking him questions.

Other thoughts:
I found it highly annoying that Sam Cassell was celebrating as if he had accomplished something. All he did was force his way out of LA and sign with the best team in the league. Any of us could have done that.

I thought it was pretty poor the way Boston kept bombing threes and going in for dunks after they broke the press in the last few minutes.

Can somebody tell Paul Pierce to save the Gatorade bath for after the game so they do not have to stop a blowout with 30 seconds left to clean it up.

I got a kick out of when KG, Pierce and Allen were leaving the game for the final time and a camera man was out on the floor filming their group hug Joey Crawford grabbed the camera man by his shirt and drug him off the floor. I do not really know why, but that made me giggle.

The other funny thing I remember from the games was during game 3 or 4 coming out of a timeout the camera was on Mark Jackson, Van Gundy and Mike Breen when the game started up again. Van Gundy scowled at the camera and nodded his head towards the court. When they did not change the shot to show the action his scowl grew bigger and he not so subtly gestured towards the floor and finally the director changed the shot to the action. I just loved the condescending look on JVG’s face when they were showing the commentators instead of the game.

I guess that is my finals recap.

THE STIFF LIST (as of 11/4 by Nate)

STIFF #1: DAN HAWKINS
After predicting 10 wins for his club before the season the Buffs find themselves just 2-6 with four games to play. To add injury to insult ... former 5-star prized recruit Darrell Scott announced he'll be transferring to UCLA after just 1 1/2 seasons at CU. Another black eye for the program and hopefully the final nail in Hawk's coaching coffin.

STIFF #2: CHRIS PAUL/RAJON RONDO FEUD
Each player was assessed a technical foul after refs had to separate the two in Boston's 97-87 win Nov. 1st. After the game the arguing and posturing continued. As Celtics' coach Doc Rivers pointed out, the 180 lb. fight rule should be invoked allowing the two to scrap because, "It's impossible for them to hurt each other." Maybe Paul should focus more on his teams' 1-3 start and not on the opposing teams' point guard's ability to, "respect me as a man."

STIFF #3: ESPN NBA HEADLINES
The Nuggets headline today reads, "Nuggets sink Pacers to avoid taking first loss." Compare that to the Suns' line reading, "Suns remain unbeaten, hand Heat first loss." Thanks for the backhanded compliment Worldwide Leader. At least Yahoo! Sports got it right, "Nuggets off to best start in 24 years." Maybe I'm being too picky.

STIFF #4: STEVE NASH'S MINUTES
When has it EVER been considered a good idea to play a 35 year-old (36 yrs on February 7th) point guard 36.8 minutes per game? Nash is on pace to average a career-high in the minutes department. And while Nash has averaged 77 games played in five full seasons with the Suns, his chronic back issues could rear its ugly head out early at this rate.

STIFF #5: PORTLAND TRAILBLAZERS
Sure starting the season off 2-3 is no big deal, but when head coach Nate McMillan begins openly questioning the teams' effort to the media ... look out.
