2008-09 Game 29: Denver Nuggets at Portland Trail Blazers Game Thread
Denver Nuggets at Portland Trail Blazers, Dec 23, 2008 8:00 PM MST
Let’s all hope that BeefySwats ends up prophetic. He projected that the Denver Nuggets would start off this six game stretch 1-3 and then sweep the Trail Blazers. We are one game away from that happening, but the Nuggets will have their work cut out for them.
Portland is going to be out for blood after losing a game they feel like they let get away from them. You can especially expect Brandon Roy to play much better tonight.
On the Nuggets side of the ball I am not sure any of their key players are going to be able to raise their game any higher than they played last night. Maybe Chauncey heats up and drains a couple of threes that he barely missed last night or J.R. has a huge quarter.
However, the beauty of how the Nuggets have increased their defensive intensity and focus is that they can win ugly this season. As long as they can play good or better defense they will be in this game.
I expect to see Portland jump out of the gate quickly and capture a lead in the first quarter. The Nuggets will come back in the second and we will have a see saw second half. And maybe, just maybe with the Nuggets short handed and playing their third back to back set of games in nine nights we will have a Renaldo Balkman sighting. I am starting to feel like Balkman is some kind of mythical creature like the Griffin or Minotaur.

Out for blood is right
Portland are furious to have lost to us and will come out of the blocks extremely intense tonight. The only remedy is to match that intensity on both ends.

Weather the storm
Jeremy I like the short article my man! We all or most everyone saw the game last night so great sum up!
I also expect Portland to start fast and try to build a big lead with the home crowd being very rowdy. I’d like to see the Nuggets weather that 1st Quarter storm … much like they did in Houston a few nights ago. Then come out and dominate the 2nd quarter. The problem for Denver seems to usually be the 3rd quarter. They let teams come back or let them build a big lead in the 3rd. If they can hedge that then they may have a shot to steal this thing in the 4th.
I expect Billups to get out of the mini-slump he’s been in for the past week. But I have a feeling that the Nuggets will go as Billups goes this season.
I’d also like to see “The Crime Stopper” get into the game – Mr. Renaldo Balkman can provide the type of energy and be the kind of pest that would be perfect for a road game. Maybe he can get under somebodies skin with his play and make a difference tonight…or maybe he stole the last donut that Karl had his eye on and will continue to sit the bench.
Please be a good game and a Win tonight!

Hey All
Just joined tonight, I’m normally at the Broncos’ site (milehighreport). But I’m also a nuggets fan…
The big question I have is, why is Dahntay Jones starting ahead of Balkman?

We are too physical for the blazers, they are straight jump shooting team when Roy is shut down.

that kick out to aldridge is the blazer's bread and butter

Yeah I feel good about the nuggets when its close in the first quarter, im so used to us battling back from 10-15 down that a close game seems like we will win.

Someone explain to me this
When is it ever, under any circumstance, a good idea to have AC and Atkins as your backcourt? Still no Balkman sighting either! I hate to say it but this is actually pissing me off now. I am also getting annoyed at how the Portland fans think their team has never committed a foul. Every call against them they act like is the greatest injustice in the World.
Anyway, decent 1st half considering Portland needs this more than we do. We just have to be in position to win this thing in the 4th and I’ll be happy.

chucky atkin's
presence has been inexplicable. i can understand AC being on the floor, chucky is a dead weight. If we don’t see Balkman at all tonight, I think we can be fairly confident that something untoward is going on.
portland fans are huge homers. they aren’t any worse than most home teams though I guess. the Portland announcers are insufferable but Denver’s are just as bad…

lol!!! you are sooooooo right it aint
even funny…but its…so funny that you mention it. I’m a portland fan, and I ain’t ever ever ever seen more homeristic announcers than the mike and mike show….I dig the guy’s but yeah, they are the whinniest couple of guy’s anytime the ref blows a whistle….never portlands fault, always a bad call…..it was funny too, becuase right after the league did their little “announcers meet the refs” session at the begining of the season, (I think it was still pre season) but it was noticable that mike and mike were almost at a loss for words given that they were actually trying not to bag on the refs…..
at least thats the way I remember it….(keep in mind I remember things strangly) ;p

Tough loss, but not unexpected
Some thoughts.
- Greg Oden has not impressed me in the least bit the last 2 nights. He looks weak. I cannot understand why Pryzbilla does not start over him. The Blazers function much better with the Pryz in there.
- The Nuggets and Blazers are not at all similar in styles of play but are similar in the types of teams they can be. Each is capable of winning at least 50 games and winning this Northwest division.
- JR Smith was off tonight. It really hurt us.
- Kleiza has been playing MUCH better.
- Portland has never committed a foul according to their fans.
- I do not for the life of me understand why Atkins is seeing so many minutes. Unbelievable. Someone please give me only 1 good reason why Atkins is seeing minutes, please.
- Balkman again did not play. I have nothing left to say about this. It is ridiculous.

...
greg…maybe uncoordinated but not weak….he’s a monster, if ya got a tivo go back to where he was actually in the game (maybe a little foul dumb too ;)), but yeah, it takes every last bit of strength for nene to keep him from moving,….I’m a portland fan (just mentioning that) but once he’s able to keep his hands to himself and not be so out of position on almost every defensive play……he’ll be a huge factor in our sucess….if we’re sucessful….if we end up sucking….lol..I agree with you… but I think greg will be fine come the post season…..
but yeah, right now pryzbilla is better and could and rightfully should start, but it’s just safer for us to let our ….“weak” ;0 center start, and bring in old faithful to clean up the rookies mistakes….
and just to be fair….not many players looked good their year after micro and a year off…..just sayin ya know.
anyway, ….
ya’ll missing carmelo? :)

Poor choice of words, my apologies
I should not have said he is weak. Better yet, he just seems ineffective to me at this point in his career. He does not seem to possess the dominant game I was expecting when he was at Ohio St. But you make a very fair point about coming off of microfracture surgery. It is not easy and he should get better with time. Look, I like Oden. I love his personality and for the sake of the NBA I hope I eat my words. I just do not see him being a dominant center in this league. He does not have any kind of scary post game so far and his defense, from what I saw, was mediocre at best.

He's been really good and really bad.
But Amar’e was absolutely terrible in the summer league when he came back and had no athleticism. Once Greg has two or three years to regain some of that, he’ll be much, much better.
You know how everyone touts Aaron Brooks as a speed demon? Greg Oden was nearly as fast as him in the Orlando pre-draft sprints. If he can get any of that back…

Missing Melo?
I don’t totally miss when Carmelo sits out. The team seems to really play well in his absence and moves the ball a lot better. Melo can really bog down the offense at times when he plays.

Good call.
Balkman is, in fact, a mythical creature. He possesses the otherworldly ability to combat pure evil.

You guys can complain all you want about the Portland announcers.
Fact is though, the Denver announcers did a horrible job knowing the Blazers on Monday night.
They called Travis Outlaw Charles Outlaw
They referred to LMA as Channing, and were surprised when he hit a jumper, saying his offense is primarily inside. He shoots jumpers 67% of the time. Same with Channing
They mentioned Ike Diogu being the second team PF this season. He’s played as the second team PF in two games.
And on and on. The Mikes are horrible homers. But they know the Denver players pretty well.

I don't mean to say that the Portland announcers are good.
Just bemoaning the lack of knowledgeable, unbiased announcers in today’s NBA.

See, I don't mind either way
It is not like the Portland or Denver announcers are catering to a national audience. They are primarily catering to each other’s fan bases and the NBA league pass audience. So what if they are both biased? Mainly Nuggets fans are watching the Nuggets announcers and vice versa. I do not have too much of a problem with it. Now if it was TNT or ESPN and I heard the bias going on with Portland or Denver, I’d have a problem.

Announcers
I love listening to the Nuggets on Altitude!
Scott Hastings and Chris Marlowe ride on the team plane, work for Mr. Kroenke, Hastings is a former Nugget…why would he not be a fan of the team. He’s with them 80-82+ games a season!
If they were national announcers then that’s a different story, but they are not. Love me some Hastings and Marlowe!
