2008-09 Game 23: Denver Nuggets vs Golden State Warriors Game Thread

Golden State Warriors at Denver Nuggets, Dec 13, 2008 7:00 PM MST

I am not sure if you guys are old enough to remember the ad campaign with the tag line, “This is not your father’s Oldsmobile.”  Well, these are not your older brothers Golden State Warriors.  These are more like your Uncle’s Golden State Warriors.  The team that defeated the Dallas Mavericks in the first round two years ago is long gone.  Golden State is more like the team that missed the playoffs for 12 straight seasons.

The Warriors have lost ten of their last 12 games.  To be fair eight of those 12 were on the road, but so is tonight’s game against the Denver Nuggets.  The Warrior’s problem is an absence of any kind of effort on defense.  The Warriors are giving up 116.5 points per game during that 12 game stretch.  Part of that is due to the fast pace the Warriors play at, but unlike the Nuggets last year, pace is not the reason they give up so many points.  The Warriors are third to last in the league in defensive efficiency giving up 112.4 points per 100 possessions.  I am willing to bet that number is closer to 120 over the 12 game streak we have been talking about.

More bad news for the Warriors is the Nuggets have been surging on offense.  Over the Nuggets last nine games Denver is sporting an offensive efficiency of 116.8.  I think it is safe to expect a very high scoring game by the Nuggets tonight.  Now Golden State can score too, but when they are firing on all cylinders on offense, their defense still has been making sure they come up a point or six short.

From an injury standpoint, Kenyon Martin is expected to play tonight, but the official word is that he is a game time decision.  Not to disrespect the Warriors, but I would prefer Kenyon sit out one more game in hopes that he will be as healthy as possible for the very difficult stretch of six games in nine days that begins on Monday.  The Nuggets need to make sure they are not looking ahead to next week and take of business tonight.

how about limited minutes for Kenyon?

Just to get back into the swing of things.

So far this year, the Nuggets have done a sensational job of not overlooking teams. Hopefully we have REVENGE on the brain tonight, to make up for the one loss we shouldn’t have suffered.

I’m looking for big games from Nene & Smith. My “picks to click” as it were.

by jakester on Dec 13, 2008 1:05 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Well both have done well so far

good picks, unlike mine of AC haha

by Missing Lynx on Dec 13, 2008 8:25 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

I don't know

Nene seemed to struggle against Andris Biedrins last time. However, if Golden State’s perimeter allows easy entry passes to the post, you’ve got to think he’ll have a big game.

pick of the game: Anthony Carter for 15 points and seven assists off the bench as Chauncey rests much of the second half in a blow out W.

by Missing Lynx on Dec 13, 2008 4:38 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Andris Biedrins

is good. Jamaal Crawford is capable to exploding on any given night. This is an NBA game and I hope our guys treat it like one, particularly since GSW is the only team that has beaten us in a matchup that we were favoraites to win thus far.

I totally forgot about Jamal Crawford

I’m still kind of upset he left New York….anyway are you putting up the link tonight?

Nuggets must defend the three point line

The Warriors are starting Rob Kurz who can really stroke it. Add in Crawford and Stephen Jackson and the Warriors can really fill it up.

Biedrins is definitely very good

But he struggles with fouls. He has one already, which hopefully will quickly become two.

Great start

Also, I love that I actually get to watch a game on tv. And so far the Warriors announcers haven’t been horribly annoying.

It was interesting though

some “best game ever played” thing via ESPN.

I thought it was an ad but it was a feature.

ATL up 2 on CLE with 2 mins left! Go the Hawks.

I have a stupid question...

Why do players raise their hand after commiting a foul?

GO BRONCOS!!!

by UnarmingMermaid on Dec 13, 2008 8:11 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Back in the day

Players had to raise their hand, now it has turned into exactly what joshhopp said.

man, this would be a BLOWOUT!

if we hit our freethrows. 12-20 is SAD.

Still, a nice little lead going…

Just looking at the boxscore

Kleiza is the only one with a negative efficiency on the Nuggs

by Lethalturnip on Dec 13, 2008 8:20 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

I remain unconvinced that the +/- is an effective measure

but I’m not watching the game, and so can’t really comment on whether Kleiza is particularly sucking tonight

by jakester on Dec 13, 2008 8:27 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

well its not perfect

but I am convinced the +/- is worth something, since Kleiza’s is consistently bad, like him.

by Missing Lynx on Dec 13, 2008 8:30 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

He has missed a couple open ones

Not going to go on about it though. His contract and the trade rumours must be getting to him

Pickaxe

Is Julie Browman getting eased out of the commentary ?

by markph on Dec 13, 2008 8:20 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

its because

her bad hair and eye makeup was scaring viewers.

by Missing Lynx on Dec 13, 2008 8:24 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Wait

who the hell is Rob Kurz?

I feel like the Nuggets allow more players to score new career highs than any other team in the league. Maybe its scouting, maybe its coaching, maybe its defense… But it seems like it happens too often.

It appears that he rubs the refs the wrong way or something

I see a high, high, high score

88 points with 16 minutes to go

Melo

I think the Warriors announcers are Melo fanboys. It’s kind of cute.

by holly96 on Dec 13, 2008 8:51 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

That Melo dude is pretty good.

GO BRONCOS!!!

by UnarmingMermaid on Dec 13, 2008 8:51 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Stephen Jackson

is having a brutal night. 1-12.

by joshhopp on Dec 13, 2008 8:52 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Nuggets, please don't foul Biedrins on his shots

My eyes cant take much more of his free throws

Ahhhhhh...

I wanted to have 100pts by the end of the 3rd.

It will be interesting to see how much Anthony Randolph will play in the 4th

There is no reason to keep Stephen Jackson out there and the kid deserves more minutes.

Apparently

there was a marriage proposal at the arena in between the 3rd and 4th.

Note to all guys out there: Most women will not want to be proposed to in public.

Heh

I wouldn’t be surprised. When the GS guys were mentioning it, they joked that it looked like she needed to be talked into saying yes.

Orlando just beat Portland at Portland

And tonight they are in Utah and have outscored the Jazz 43-22 in the second half and have an 11 point lead with under 6:00 left.

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t enjoying it.

Zach Randolph had a monster game against them last night.

Hey jeremy (or anyone else)...

Is ’Pace" a calcutation of how many offensive possesions a team would have during a game while playing at the current tempo?

GO BRONCOS!!!

by UnarmingMermaid on Dec 13, 2008 9:14 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Pace

It is a statistical measure of possessions based on shots, free throws, rebounds (offensive and defensive) and turnovers per 48 minutes. It is easier than counting possessions by hand from the play by play.

THE STIFF LIST (as of 3/8 by Andrew)

STIFF #1: K-MART'S LEFT KNEE
Best-case scenario, K-Mart misses another week or two with a sore knee.  Worst-case, he's done for the season with knee surgery.

STIFF #2: RON ARTEST
Nice hairdo.  'Nuff said.

STIFF #3: JOEL PRYZBILLA
The Blazers backup center re-injured his surgically repaired right knee after slipping in the shower.  Now we're just waiting for Greg Oden to slip on a banana peel.

STIFF #4: CAVALIERS FANS
Recently set the world record for the largest gathering of people wearing fleece blankets - i.e. Snuggies.  Really?!  This is worthy of a world record?!

STIFF #5: BOSTON CELTICS
Losing to the pathetic Nets and almost losing to the Wizards is one thing.  But to do so at home within a week of each other...now that's an art.  I think it's safe to assume the Celtics are going nowhere in this year's playoffs.
