Renaldo Balkman and the Box Score

Renaldo Balkman had a very nice statistical game against the Sacramento Kings.  There were some tangible things we could all point to as far as his 17 points, six rebounds, three assists, three steals and plus 35 rating.  However, Balkman is one of those players that supposedly makes plays that do not show up in the box score.  Well, in a game where he had a significant impact on the box score, did he do even more?  Did he still make plays that were not recorded in the box score?

Let’s go to the tape!

Some of these things may seem a little inane or insignificant, but I put together ten clips, from the first half alone, of situations where he made a play that was not reflected in the box score, other than a missed shot for the Kings here or there.  You can decide for yourself if he made an even larger impact than his numbers suggest.

Come on George, let's see what we can do to get Renaldo a little more PT.

Hey

I just realized; Linas Kleiza is the Nuggets’ new Rodney White. Hopefully some of you remember him.

The only differences are Kleiza runs out on defensive rebounds, and Rodney White played slightly better terrible defense.

that comparison is way too accurate.

It's Worse Than I Thought

I just did the comparison of White & LK. I used White’s best year (2002-03) and LK’s best year (last year). Used “per 36 minutes” stats. White on the left, LK on the right.

Points – 15 / 16.8
Rebounds – 4.9 / 6.3
Assists – 2.8 / 1.8
Turnovers – 3.6 / 1.7

great job, Jeremy!

I love Balkman, have ever since I saw him bug the hell out of the Bulls in a game during his rookie season. I think the key stat for him is this:

DNP-CD Denver v. San Antonio, 12/4/08
DNP-CD Denver v. New Orleans, 11/27/08
DNP-CD Denver v. LA Lakers, 11/1/08

Those correspond to the Nuggets’ three home losses this year. I thought especially in the Spurs game, we played like pretty boys, unwilling to fight through screens, move on offense, etc.

What Balkman really probably needs to do is develop his outside shot. Then they just couldn’t sit him.

Good point jakester

I didn’t notice the DNP’s against the Lakers and Hornets, but I was baffled as to why Karl didn’t play him against the spurs.

He can’t stop Tim Duncan – not by a long shot – but he could have played good help defense and neutralized a lot of those easy buckets that Matt Bonner was getting.

(I can’t believe I just said that. Matt Bonner, people. Come on.)

Balkman has impressed me

When the trade for him went through, I did some research and scanned some knicks boards to see what they thought of him. One reoccurring theme was knicks fans bashing Balkman for being unable to learn plays and having a low basketball IQ.

We obviously don’t see many plays run for Balkman, but he moves so well without the ball. From what I have watched of him, he has a good basketball IQ and some of the best instincts as far as spacing as I have seen.

STIFF LIST (as of 2/7 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. THE NUGGETS AT HOME
How is it possible that a Nuggets team with this much talent can be 7-5 at home?! Things have gotten so bad that fans are clamoring for J.R. Smith to return.

2. CARMELO ANTHONY
Kobe Bryant plays through any and all ailments. Melo uses any and ailments as an excuse not to play.

3. KEVIN LOVE
Just when the T'Wolves are looking better, Love stomps on Luis Scola and lands himself a two-game suspension.

4. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS
The 'Cats have lost 11 straight and are now 3-21 ... in the Eastern Conference! This is what happens when you let an underwear salesman with a Hitler mustache run your team.

5. MIKE BROWN
Dr. Bunsen Honeydew (Google it!) got himself a one-game suspension for making contact with a referee.
