More Insight on the Chauncey Billups Trade

I know you want more so here is even more analysis on the Billups acquisition.

The Nuggets have been rumored to be working on acquiring Jamaal Tinsley and were also listed as a team who might be interested in Stephon Marbury should he be bought out or waived.  Good news.  The Nuggets are now out of the Tinsley and/or Marbury business and will not be bringing in either cancer player.  I have to say the removal of the threat of bringing in one of those guys makes this trade even more appealing.  In fact I wonder if the Nuggets pushed the latest resurgence of the Tinsley rumors to try to push Dumars over the edge.

Now we know what happened to Linas Kleiza’s contract extension.  If Kleiza does not take another step forward the Nuggets may look to trade him after the season.  Now that AI is gone and J.R. is most likely starting they need him to give them more than 11 points a game off the bench.

Speaking of J.R. Smith, he should be filled with as much additional confidence as he will be filled with additional playing time.  The Nuggets are showing him that they trust him to replace Iverson’s offense.  Billups is an offensive upgrade over Anthony Carter, but he will not make up for the loss of all the buckets AI used to sink.  Smith is going to have to put up 20 plus points a game from here on out.

I have noted that the one aspect of this deal that gives me pause is Billups age and his contract.  The Nuggets actually are in position to remake the team with some significant expiring contracts in the summer of 2011.  Billups has a team option that summer that can be utilized like an expiring deal and Kenyon’s massive deal comes off the books at the same time.  That is just shy of $30 million coming off the books.  Of course, few fans want to hear about the summer of 2011 so let’s just focus on how the Nuggets will be better right now.

There is some concern about whether or not guys like Melo and Kenyon, who were close with AI are going to be very excited about the trade.  It may take them some time to get over losing their friend, but I believe playing with Billups will help them get over their sense of loss.

I think too much is being made about how Ai helped Melo get easier shots.  Teams still focused their defense on Melo.  The only time I remember Iverson being doubled was the game last season against the Lakers where he had 49 after three quarters.  I do not believe Melo will see much of a difference from how defenses play against him.  In fact with Billups and J.R. on the perimeter the teams might be less excited to double Carmelo, especially on the wing.

More good news, at least in my opinion, is that Chucky Atkins is pretty much done as a Nugget.  I am not trying to be mean, but due to injuries and now being buried on the depth chart we do not need to worry about watching a Nuggets team with Atkins as the starting point guard.  That was a horrible signing.

Still nothing definitive on whether or not the Nuggets will buy out Antonio McDyess.  They did waive Juwan Howard to make room for adding McDyess and Samb.  I suspect by the time we wake up tomorrow morning we will know if McDyess will be suiting up for Denver or not.  Personally, they will be paying him one way or another so I hope they pay him to be a Nugget.

One last thing.  Thanks to all my fellow bloggers who have linked to this site today and to all of you who have taken the time to comment.

It's hard to concentrate in class

when I can’t get this trade out of my head. Seriously, its midday now and I keep ducking back to my room between class for updates. Still not quite sure how I feel about it, I love AI, he has the most beautiful game to watch but I am certain that this is a move you have to make every time.

I agree that chemistry is a major concern. I think K-Mart in particular had a great connection with AI; they are both a pair of wiley old vets that have been through it all and I think there was a great friendship there. In that sense, Billups may gel similarly with our guys. But that core of Detroit guys, Rip, Billups, Prince and Wallace set the standard for team chemistry. They were so much more than the sum of their parts, they proved that teamwork will overcome raw talent every time (hell, the Nuggets prove that a couple times month at least). Billups is a tough old nut and you have to think he wanted to stay in that core group till retirement. I’m not sure how he feels about young bonehead stud scorers like Melo and JR. He hasn’t played with high-volume guys like that for a while (Rip can fill it up, but not on the same level, and Rip moves the ball very well). Will he want to show them up?

Did anyone see the interview with Melo...

…where he seemed all dejected and butt hurt that they trade AI? Buck up fella!!! Grow a pair and show some leadership! Seriously, sometimes these overpayed princesses can really piss me off!

Remember

AI was also his friend, I think he was just a little sad about the trade. Especially when no one new it was going down. But he’ll get over it so just relax.

Then then they can have brunch on the weekend for all I care!

But Mon-Fri get your head in the office. All I know is that if I’m Chauncey and I saw that interview then I’m wondering if I’m going to be welcomed on that team. Not a great way to start off!

Did you hear the Piston's comments on the trade?

“Do we like the trade? Maybe not. Ain’t no telling,” forward Rasheed Wallace said.

Tayshaun Prince: “When you have six straight years with somebody, you’ve got that bond, that connection. Now all of a sudden it’s gone.”

Not exactly happy on the DET side either. These guys were all good friends with their teammates and all were shocked the first day. Calm down, they are all professionals and will get to buisness as soon as they can.

You cant assume that's how he meant to come off

That was an interview right after the trade, of course Melo wasn’t jumping for joy. That whole organization lost a great player and a friend. I’m not in anyway saying it was the wrong move (the best in my opinion) but why would anyone think the team was going to be ecstatic directly after. But it doesnt even matter anymore because this happened yesterday. I bet he entire squad is feeling good about the trade today. It……just…..took……a….little…..time.

Yeah

I was kinda wondering how Melo was going to react to this trade. I’m even more curious to see how he responds on the court. Will he be the leader this team needs him to be? Time will tell I suppose. One thing I do know though: This trade makes me very very happy and optamistic about the future, and present potential of the Nuggets. It was clear that the AI experiment had failed. Didn’t take a real perceptive person to see that. As much as I love AI as a player, and as much as I appreciate the hard work and effort he put into the Nugs while he was here, this trade is about the best thing that could’ve happened for us. A good starting quality point guard is essential. And we haven’t had that since Andre Miller. Anthony Carter will be much more effective now as a backup PG in limited minutes. Welcome home Chauncey!

For anybody who is like me...

and was wondering what number Chauncey would wear for the Nuggs, reports from Denver Post is that he will wear #7. Also he most likely won’t play on Wednesday but should be ready to go Friday at home.

Anybody hear any updates on McDyess?

Are we buying out his contract?
Will he play for us?
Since when do players get to decide who they will play for?
Why doesn’t he want to play with the Nugs?

THE STIFF LIST (as of 11/20 by Andrew)

STIFF #1: THE NEW JERSEY NETS
The bad get worse.  Starting out 0-12, these Nets are doing a great imitation of the 1997-98, 11-win Nuggets.  I might have to pay someone to take my Nets tickets when they come to Pepsi Center.

STIFF #2: ALLEN IVERSON
I hate to kick one of my favorite players while he's down, but when even the Knicks won't sign you, you belong on the Stiff List.

STIFF #3: THE SAN ANTONIO SPURS
Richard Jefferson?  Antonio McDyess?  DeJuan Blair?  A healthy Manu Ginobili?  Big deal.  What idiot thought these guys would be neck-and-neck with the Lakers and way better than the Nuggets?  (Oh wait, that would be me.)

STIFF #4: TRACY MCGRADY
After years of suspect handling of his injuries making it virtually impossible for the Rockets to trade him, McGrady goes head-to-head with Rockets coach Rick Adelman demanding to know what his "future" with the organization is.  Tracy, take your league-high $23.2 million and shut the @#$% up.

STIFF #5: DAVID KAHN
Defiant and stubborn as ever, the Timberwolves "president" defended his offseason moves (you know, drafting two point guards before Brandon Jennings not named Brandon Jennings) by proclaiming that the Wolves will be active during next summer's free agent market.  I just pray that Wolves owner Glen Taylor never fires this guy so the Nuggets have four guaranteed wins each season.
