Picking Up the Pieces of My Shattered Life

I was not one of the players who went out on the floor and sucked it up, how come I feel so embarrassed?

The Denver Nuggets had a chance to prove to the entire league that they were a team to be taken seriously.  What they proved was that they are not physically or mentally ready to handle the Los Angeles Lakers.

I was baffled by the Nuggets inability to simply compete.  They stepped on the floor and completely forgot everything they needed to know in order to play basketball at the NBA level.  The sad thing is if the Nuggets play the way they are capable of they could have at least made that game interesting.  Instead they have opened us up to a new round of enver Nuggets jokes.

I have no idea why the Nuggets pee down their leg at the sight of the Lakers.  Is it simply the pressure of playing in front of Warren Beatty (someone at Altitude must have loved Dick Tracy because they kept showing him over and over)?   All I know is I witnessed a completely different Nuggets team in LA than I had in any other game this season.  I can assure you after last night I am no longer looking forward to the Nuggets playing teams like New Orleans or Utah because I will never know when the Nuggets are going to lay another egg.

I guess the reason why I am embarrassed is I have been telling everyone how things have changed.  The Nuggets have reformed from their former sinful ways.  As I said before the game, I still think this team can be the best Nugget team in the last 20 years, but they are going to have to prove to me that the Lakers game was the fluke and not the Boston game and it starts tomorrow night against the Chicago Bulls.

My opinion...

I think you’re overreacting just a little bit. Lots of teams have extended losing streaks against other teams (the Trailblazers have lost 11 straight to Phoenix including their loss tonight) and the Lakers are not just another NBA team.

They are probably the BEST team in the league right now. Kobe, Pau, Odom, Ariza, Bynum…that is an incredible cast with one of the winning-est coaches of the past 20 years in Phil Jackson. I would say they are favorites to win the Finals and certainly are playing the best basketball statistically.

I don’t excuse the Nuggets for shitting themselves completely in this game, at all. But to be doom and gloom about their hopes in the postseason this year is overreacting a lot. “Picking Up the Pieces of My Shattered Life”? Come on now. We’ve had 9 total games with Chauncey and have lost to two of the toughest teams in the league since we’ve acquired him, Cleveland and LA.

If we’re midway through the season and the Nuggets are still struggling with the elite teams in the West, then I might change my tune. Relax a bit and lets see how things play out. Things to watch for:

- JR breaking out of his shooting slump.
- Carmelo breaking out of HIS shooting slump.
- Nene to have a 30/20/10 game.
- Chauncey to have a 20/10/10 game.
- Kleiza to hit more than 2 3 pointers in a game.
- Balkman to continue to improve.
- The return of Chris Andersen and the potential of Sonny Weems.

I still have very high hopes for this season. Keep in mind, the Jazz just got demolished by the same Spurs team that the Nuggets dismantled just three nights ago. We’re still tied for the Northwest Division lead, and I strongly believe that we will win the NW division this year.

Also

Beating both Boston and the Spurs in THEIR house on the second nights of back-to-backs is NOT a minor accomplishment. Those are both very quality wins and strong, strong indicators that Chauncey has given this team the leadership it needs to succeed in difficult situations.

I am not really that devastated

I continue to be very disappointed, but I was just using a little bit of hyperbole in the post title. As I said this team has already done enough to prove to me that they can be the best Nuggets squad in 20 years.

From the sounds of it

I am glad I didn’t catch this one. Scary to hear you guys talk in these terms. We have a big task ahead of ourselves against Chicago tommorow; Derrick Rose has been a lighting quick scoring explosion since he started this season and I don’t like Billup’s chances of keeping up with him. We need to shut him down and I think D-Jones is probably the man for the job. The Bulls have 3 legit bigs, Noah, Thomas and Gooden who will keep Nene and K-Mart busy all night. Let’s hope Karl takes this thing seriously and are able to help his men bounce back from this emotionally painful hammering.

THE STIFF LIST (as of 3/8 by Andrew)

STIFF #1: K-MART'S LEFT KNEE
Best-case scenario, K-Mart misses another week or two with a sore knee.  Worst-case, he's done for the season with knee surgery.

STIFF #2: RON ARTEST
Nice hairdo.  'Nuff said.

STIFF #3: JOEL PRYZBILLA
The Blazers backup center re-injured his surgically repaired right knee after slipping in the shower.  Now we're just waiting for Greg Oden to slip on a banana peel.

STIFF #4: CAVALIERS FANS
Recently set the world record for the largest gathering of people wearing fleece blankets - i.e. Snuggies.  Really?!  This is worthy of a world record?!

STIFF #5: BOSTON CELTICS
Losing to the pathetic Nets and almost losing to the Wizards is one thing.  But to do so at home within a week of each other...now that's an art.  I think it's safe to assume the Celtics are going nowhere in this year's playoffs.
