Nene Medical Update

The tumor that Nene had removed was in fact malignant according to a report on ESPN.com.

However, based on the ESPN.com news services report the doctor who performed the procedure believes, "There is no evidence that the cancer had spread, and the likelihood of recurrence, he says, is small."

The article goes further to say that the typical recovery time for this procedure is two months.

Although it is very frightening that the tumor was found to be malignant, the fact that it was caught early, due to a random drug test, and the procedure appears to have been completely successful is in fact very good news.

Hopefully Nene will have a smooth recovery and no trace of cancer is ever found in his body again.

Wow

Glad it looks like he's going to be ok.  I'd be stunned if he returned this season.  That's not a knock against Nene either, that's a "make sure you're 100% healthy and get your life in order before playing basketball" statement.  Just sucks for the team.

Now Melo's probably out tonight.  It has me tempted to go to the CU-KSU game instead of watching the Hawks and the Armadillo Cowboy smack us around.  Ugh.

Oy

Nene's growth being malignant shines a real light on what a serious injury is these days.  When a jumping bean like Amare Stoudamire can have microfracture surgery and still pick a dime off the top of the backboard you start thinking there is nothing these guys can't recover from.  And while I would not take microfracture surgery lightly, tell me it doesn't pale compared to cancer?  I think it adds good persepctive and I hope Nene can bull his way through this.

On another note, you should defnitely go see KSU play CU tonight, Nuggets4.  I hear this KSU kid is a lot of fun to watch and CU might be just the team to allow the first octuple-double (double digits in points, offensive rebounds, defensive rebounds, blocks, assists, steals, home attendance, and co-eds impregnated).

Comeback?

I agree that if Nene believes it is necessary he can sit out the rest of the season with no hard feelings.  On the other hand, I bet he is really wanting to get back to playing and put this behind him.

Not that it is ever good to find out someone has, or had, cancer, but I really think this is a great story.  They caught it early due to a random drug test, the surgery was successful, the cancer had not spread and it is unlikely that the cancer will return.

What could have been tragic I find to be somewhat uplifting.

STIFF LIST (as of 2/7 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. THE NUGGETS AT HOME
How is it possible that a Nuggets team with this much talent can be 7-5 at home?! Things have gotten so bad that fans are clamoring for J.R. Smith to return.

2. CARMELO ANTHONY
Kobe Bryant plays through any and all ailments. Melo uses any and ailments as an excuse not to play.

3. KEVIN LOVE
Just when the T'Wolves are looking better, Love stomps on Luis Scola and lands himself a two-game suspension.

4. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS
The 'Cats have lost 11 straight and are now 3-21 ... in the Eastern Conference! This is what happens when you let an underwear salesman with a Hitler mustache run your team.

5. MIKE BROWN
Dr. Bunsen Honeydew (Google it!) got himself a one-game suspension for making contact with a referee.
