07-08 Game 40 Nuggets at Lakers Game Thread

The Nuggets have their last shot at defeating the Lakers tonight as they wrap up the three game season series in Los Angeles.  The Lakers embarrassed the Nuggets early in the season 127-99 which is tied for the largest margin of defeat of the season along with Denver’s horrifying trip to Houston just two games prior where they lost 109-81.

Let’s just ignore that game and hope it was an aberration.  The Nuggets last loss to the Lakers in Denver was more heartbreaking than the blowout in LA.  Iverson went off for 51 points, but received little help on offense.  Defensively the Lakers were able to hit open threes all night long, especially in the second quarter as the Nuggets perimeter D was atrocious.  In the end Kobe took over on offense and the Lakers double and triple teamed AI as soon as he touched the ball to make sure he did not beat them.

We may not be able to garner much from the first two games as both teams are missing players who played major roles in those games.

Most likely Kenyon Martin will be out again tonight with Kleiza again starting in his place.

The Lakers are facing an even move devastating injury with Andrew Bynum on the shelf for the next seven weeks or so.  Kwame Brown will be starting in his place as Chris Mihm is out as well.  One thing to watch is how the Laker crowd reacts to Kwame Brown.  The other night he was horrible and they booed him every time he had the ball.  The Lakers cannot afford to lose him to mental anguish because if he collapses like the Spanish Empire the Lakers will be in a world of hurt.

Phil Jackson has stated that they have confidence that Brown can take it to Camby in the paint when he has the ball so that will be interesting to see.

Brown is a shadow of the player he was coming out of high school as the first high school player to ever be drafted number one by Michael Jordan.  I remember being very impressed watching his first games in summer league.  He had a nice shot, he could handle the ball and was already pretty tough on the boards.  That was a long time ago and it does not look like we will ever see that player again.

Getting back to the game, the Nuggets had success early in the previous game in LA by getting turnovers and running, but when LA started taking care of the ball, that dried up and the Nuggets were abused on both ends of the floor.  The Nuggets will once again have to play with great effort and passion in order to keep things close tonight.

As usual leave your comments after this post during the game to share your thoughts with other Nuggets fans.

No K-mart again?

Wow. Luckily Camby has stayed healthy (knock on wood). Anyway, this should be a good matchup of relatively banged up teams. I feel like we can take this one in LA tonight if we play with heart, passion, and play the right way as is so cliche to say. I'm not sure I'm comfortable with AC guarding Kobe but I don't know who else we could put on him. JR? Don't like that idea. Yakhouba? Takes away too much from the offensive game that he won't make up for guarding Kobe. That matchup, as it always does, really worries me.

Go Nuggets!

Guarding Kobe

Carter does a good job of not letting Kobe get too deep when he posts or sets up on the wing because he is strong, but Kobe can shoot over him.  J.R. seems to take the challenge of guarding Kobe pretty seriously and he has the size and athleticism to do a good job.

By the way, are you still going to send me an eye witness recap from the Jazz game?

K-Mart is starting

He is back!  Hope his can is OK.

Just like last time

The Nuggets are getting turnovers and running early on as they did in the last game in LA.

by Jeremy on Jan 21, 2008 8:53 PM MST reply actions

Hopefully they keep it up

Iverson can get 50 again if he wants. Do you still want me to send you a recap? I can probably get it to you tomorow if you want.

lol

No, don't. Basketball and specifically Nuggets basketball is something I truly enjoy talking about. I can't get enough of it. Homework, not so much.

Oh no, Melo is down

I can take a bad loss but losing Melo for any period of time would be catastrophic.

Crap

I was a couple of minutes behind due to putting my daughter to bed.  I just saw it.

That looks bad.

by Jeremy on Jan 21, 2008 9:35 PM MST up reply actions

Definately didn't look good

Hopefully they give us a report here soon. Dammit! That really makes this a bad night. Please be ok Melo.

Sticky Fingers

You guys better believe I am going to go back and chart these first half possessions.  Can we please have more than one pass per possession?  This looks worse than the Celtics game.

by Jeremy on Jan 21, 2008 9:33 PM MST reply actions

Down to 9

More effort on defense and more passing on offense are good things...

by Jeremy on Jan 21, 2008 9:46 PM MST reply actions

We can still get this game

It has to be done with team ball now though, which could end up being a blessing. They need to come out hard in the 2nd half and try and steal this one. Kobe is being held in check but is doing a good job getting people involved.

by RyanBuff on Jan 21, 2008 9:50 PM MST reply actions

AI needs to be a distributor

He will be tempted to score and do it all on his own, but he has to give the ball up.  If AI tries to score everytime down the floor the Lakers can completely focus on him and make his life a living hell.  They will focus on him no matter what, but if he gets everyone involved they will have to lay off of him a little bit.

Damn

I didn't get to see that 3rd quarter. Got busy with stuff. Looked like we cut the lead and gave it back up. C'mon Nuggets put together a good 4th!

Nuggets were up

I think it was 79-77.  Obviously, that has changed quite a bit.

: (

Frustrating. Any more word on Melo? I hope we have him for Wednesday.

by RyanBuff on Jan 21, 2008 10:47 PM MST reply actions

No real updae

The frightening and talentless Cheryl Miller informed us that X-rays were negative and that was all they knew for now.

I would be shocked if he could play Wednesday just from the video of the injury.

by Jeremy on Jan 21, 2008 10:50 PM MST up reply actions

True

Just wishful thinking I suppose. Hopefully he's not out for too long. He definately rolled it, but it looked like he got out of it at the end.

by RyanBuff on Jan 21, 2008 10:55 PM MST up reply actions

Yes

He did fall back instead of waiting before he had enough of his weight off of it to pick it up.  Hopefully that mitigated some of the damage.

by Jeremy on Jan 21, 2008 10:57 PM MST up reply actions

Kobe K.

At least we should be able to see Kobe Karl before the night is out.

That is a great story and having Kobe play in a game his dad is coaching would be special.

by Jeremy on Jan 21, 2008 10:58 PM MST reply actions

Hopefully better days are ahead

Tough to lose all these very winnable games on the road. It seems like we are just waiting and wishing for this team to take that next step to the elite level of the NBA. They are borderline but not quite there yet. I want to see a sustained win streak out of this team at some point. Unfortunately, if Melo is out that probably isn't realistic anytime soon.

The STIFF LIST (as of 8/30 by Andrew)

STIFF #1: J.R. SMITH
Remember when I wrote that J.R.'s "nine lives may be up"? Well, that was last January. With Denver police looking closely at J.R. allegedly attacking former 14er Damien Lolar at a recent Pepsi Center shoot-around, it's clear that J.R. will never mature and it's time to move him.

STIFF #2: LEON ROSE AND WORLDWIDE WES
After commandeering LeBron's departure from Cleveland, Rose and Wes are allegedly working to move Melo out of Denver. Let's hope the Nuggets do what's best for Denver and not these two franchise-destroyers.

STIFF #3: RIC BUCHER
The man who once guaranteed that Kobe Bryant had played his last game in a Lakers uniform has been gravy-training on other reporters' Melo-related stories all summer long. Who does Bucher think he is, a sports blogger?

STIFF #4: MARCUS JORDAN
Like father, like son. Last week, His Airness's 19-year-old son tweeted about dropping $50k at the Aria casino in Las Vegas prompting an investigation.

STIFF #5: INDIANA PACERS
Brandon Rush has been suspended five games for violating the NBA's drug policy and 2010 draftee Lance Stephenson was recently arrested on assault charges. Larry Bird sure is doing a great job re-shaping the Pacers' already shoddy image.
