Nuggets vs Warriors recap: Jusuf Nurkic reaches new heights in loss to Golden State

New, comments

The last game of the season. We didn't get to see Kenneth Faried, Randy Foye, Darrell Arthur, or Jameer Nelson for the Nuggets due to injury and rest, but it didn't really matter as Denver had nothing to play for besides pride.

Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

Before tonight's game a little drama was set up as the Nuggets could have finished the season with a tied record with the Detroit Pistons. Fortunately, the Knicks played the part of the loser at home to Stan Van Gundy and Company and the Nuggets head into this game with nothing at stake.

One can't help but wonder if Ty Lawson is playing his final game as a Denver Nugget. Perhaps more players too, we shall find out at some point in the offseason.

Who will the Nuggets start? Let's check in with Nuggets Twitter:

I like Gary Harris starting, hope he gets 30+ minutes again. Also good to see Jusuf Nurkic starting, didn't think he should have lost his starting gig to the undersized Kenneth Faried at center. As for the Warriors, they're going with Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Harrison Barnes, Draymond Green, and Andrew Bogut.

1st Quarter:

-7:42 mark: Nurkic makes a quick little baby hook from the baseline. Count me among those who like the quick decisions from Juka, even if they sometimes result in bad misses near the rim. I get the feeling he launches quickly to avoid getting shots blocks (not a lot of hops from Nurkic), he should calm down as he gets more comfortable in the NBA post. He'll find that when he is a little patient with post moves that he'll get open, easy looks. But it's also good to make quick decisions, never allow your defender to get comfortable. 13-7 Warriors.

-First sub of the game is J.J. Hickson for Jusuf Nurkic. I've been preaching that there's no right way to develop young players, but I find myself disappointed that Melvin Hunt is going with Hickson over Joffrey Lauvergne.

This Tweet from Kreckman is exactly why the Nuggets have to find a player in the draft. The Nuggets haven't had a Top 10 pick since Carmelo Anthony, now is the time to find a difference maker (well, draft night is that time - I hope!).

-1:05 mark: Hickson is super slow in transition defense and lets Festus Ezeli go right by him to the rim for a put-back dunk. 33-19 Warriors. Hunt should bench Hickson for that effort.

-00:38.3 mark: King Joffrey checks in for Danilo Gallinari. Gallo has vowed to shave his wiry beard after the season. I feel Gallo's pain with the lame beard, that's all I can grow, too. Stay strong Gallo! Fear the clumpy neck beard!

End of the first: 35-23 Warriors. Gallo and Nurkic lead Denver with 6 points each. Klay leads the Warriors with 10 points. Each team with four offensive rebounds in the quarter. Nuggets commit 8 turnovers which lead to 9 points for the Warriors to Golden State's 3 turnovers and just 2 points for the Nuggets.

2nd Quarter:

-10:40 mark: Ian Clark checks in for Denver and is out there with Erick Green, Will Barton, Joffrey, and Hickson. Joffrey keeps a possession alive with an offensive board tip, gets it back on the baseline, spins on Barnes and goes up and under for the layup. Pretty move from the Frenchmen and it's 39-29 Warriors.

-9:22 mark: Leandro Barbosa is at the free throw line, he looks like he took a pregame bath in cement.

Nuggets bench giving it to the Warriors bench. Yes, some starters are mixed in there like Gallo and Draymond and probably some others that I have yet to notice ... like Steph Curry, Klay, and now Nurkic is back.

-5:06 mark: Gallo and Draymond Green involved in some trash talking. Green fouls Gallo and he hits both free throws. On the other end, Gallo comes up with a steal in the passing lane, tips ball out to Harris, and Gary races down the floor and gets an And-1 as Iggy reaches in. Harris misses the freebie.

Half: Warriors up 71-67. Gallo with 18 points (12 points in the quarter) leads the Nuggets. Chandler with 16 of his own and Nurkic with 12 points and 6 rebounds. Klay leading the way for the Warriors with 25 points. Denver with just 1 turnover in the quarter to GS's 4.

3rd Quarter:

-The Warriors have pulled the plug on their starters, and you can't disagree with Steve Kerr there.

Turkic is the auto-corrected name for Nurkic. I have almost Tweetdecked it out there 5,000 times this season. But Adam is on point as Nurkic has a real rough patch in the third.

But Melvin Hunt is playing the role of Nurkic-whisperer. Pulled him out of the game but talking him through his mistakes.
— Adam Mares (@Adam_Mares) April 16, 2015

Good old Melvin.

-5:30 mark: Brandon Rush, the guy I wanted in the Iggy sign and trade (Denver got Randy Foye instead) is on the floor for the Warriors. An ACL injury derailed a pretty nice career for Rush. I thought he'd play a bigger role this season, but not yet. It's 87-78 Warriors.

-2:31 mark: Erick Green is having a nice quarter. He's got 7 points in the third, 9 total points thus far for Denver. Warriors still leading 96-89.

-2:05 mark: Will Barton refuses to throw the ball into the post to Joffrey (he's 3-3 with 7 points), dribbles into where Joffrey is posted up, dribbles out, passes to J.J. who came over to the foul line to further clog things up, and Barton gets the ball back and gets fouled and nails the freebies. Warriors lead down to 96-94.

End of the third: Tied at 100. Erick Green took over with 9 points in the quarter and 11 points overall. Nuggets committed 6 turnovers in the quarter to GS's 3.

4th Quarter:

-Melvin going with Green, Barton, Clark, Nurkic, and Joffrey. Warriors have Barbosa, Justin Holiday, Rush, Ezeli, and Speights.

-8:48 mark: Nurkic steals a lazy lob pass, throws ball down to Barton, who tosses an oop to Joffrey who lays in the awkward pass. Good play by the rookies there and nice unselfishness from Barton. 107-104 Warriors.

-After the timeout, Jamaal Franklin checks in for Denver. He was awesome at San Diego State. Would be nice to see him catch on in the League.

-3:12 mark: Nurkic battles for a loose ball, dishes it to Erick, who nails a three and gets fouled on the play. The refs review it, but Rush is going to be guilty of the horrible three-point foul here. Game tied 121-121 and we have a throwback to the Doug Moe days! 122-121 Nuggets with Green's made free throw, the beauty of the four point play!

-1:23 mark: Joffrey fouls out with 11 points and 7 rebounds. He got fired up after the call and got a technical after he slammed the ball down and it hit Speights in his massive dome. 127-124 Warriors now.

Golden State has put the game away with an open court dunk. It's 131-124 with 0:37 seconds left in the season. Melvin Hunt takes a late timeout to draw up some final plays for the Nuggets' season.

Final score: 133-126 Warriors. An old school offensive showcase. The Warriors finish the season 39-2 at home, one game better than the 2012-13 Nuggets' mark of 38-3. Great season from Golden State, back to the drawing board for the Nuggets.

Views you can use:

-Joffrey matches his career high with 11 points.

-Jusuf Nurkic sets his career high with 17 points.

-Erick Green sets his career high with 17 points.

Let's go 4.3%! Or 15% which is the Nuggets' chances at a top 3 pick.
