2007-2008 Game 78: Nuggets/Clippers Game Thread

Tonight the Nuggets continue their trek through the "easy" segment of their closing schedule.  Never mind that they are 0-2 to this point after their first two "easy" games.

Believe it or not, the Nuggets still control their own destiny.  As long as they win at Golden State Thursday night, they can drop one of the other four games on the schedule and still be in the playoffs.  Keep in mind that one of those other four games is in Utah and it becomes clear that making the playoffs and dropping tonight’s contest in Los Angeles against the Clippers are probably mutually exclusive.

To prepare for tonight’s game let’s do some good news/bad news:

Good News - the Clippers are bad

Bad News – the Nuggets are bad on the road

Good News – Melo has been playing tremendously on offense the last two games averaging 42.5 points and 11 boards

Bad News – the Nuggets lost both of those games

Good News – there is no one named Kevin Martin or Kevin Durant on the Clippers roster

Bad News – Denver has yet to win a game at the Staples Center this season (0-3)

Good News – Corey Maggette will probably sit out tonight’s game

Bad News – that probably just means more Al Thornton who is averaging 18.7 points and 7.7 rebounds versus Denver this season including a 33 point, 12 board and four assist gem against the Nuggets on Leap Day.

Good News – Chris Kaman will be out too

Bad News – Elton Brand is back and looking for more minutes

So there you go.  Take from that whatever you would like, but you will ignore any of it at your own peril.

I had written that the Nuggets seemed to have solidified their performance from game to game.  Earlier in the season they seemed much less consistent and we never knew what to expect from them.  Then in March they became much more predictable as they won at home, lost to good teams on the road and beat bad teams everywhere.  All of that ended this weekend with the back to back losses to a wounded Sacramento team and the sorry gang in Seattle.

Once again we are left to wonder what kind of performance the Nuggets will bring to the table in LA tonight.

At this point would any of us be surprised if the Nuggets lost?  Would anyone be surprised if they won by 30?  Quite honestly that is the range of potential outcomes for this team.  There should be little doubt about what you would get from a contending team when they face a poor team in April.  The fact that we have doubt says a great deal about this group.

I strongly recommend you check out Clipper Steve’s insights over at Clips Nation and we had some great conversation going on during the game in Seattle Sunday night.  Leave your thoughts in the comments section before, during and after the game so we can all either celebrate or commiserate together.

Not sure what to make of this game

Sure we should win, but you easily could've said that about the last 2 games. Plus, even if we do win I give us about a 0.0000000000000000001% chance of winning in Golden State Thursday so it's difficult to get excited for this one. Oh well, hopefully we take care of this game and get back on track even if I don't like our chances the next 2 games.

After seeing the Clippers starting lineup

If we lose this I will be on the lets blow this thing up bandwagon.

Truly a Must Win

The Clippers are definitely short handed and you are absolutely right.  If Denver looses this game the season is as good as done as is this team.

I thought they'd win the last 2
And I feel no different about this one. Hopefully they don't prove me wrong.

Jeremy, I know the season isn't over

But I would be interested in your opnion regarding what we should do this offseason.

by RyanBuff on Apr 8, 2008 8:59 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

I definitely have some thoughts...

but I am going to save them for after the games are done.  I will say I do not see much of a future for this team as currently constructed.

Hmmmmm

I would like to read that blog

I am not impressed

with the Nuggets energy in the first quarter.

by Jeremy on Apr 8, 2008 9:07 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Ahhh man...

Well I can't watch this game, but thank Gosh I'm going to get the NBA text messages after each quarter. Lords know what I would do if I couldn't see those great scores.

If the Nuggs win: Yaaay I guess
If the Nuggs don't win: What's new

Don't know if you guys watch college ball but last night game was sick. Just had to throw that in.

One of the best National Titles games in memory

Chalmers 3 will be remembered for quite some time. Funny how Memphis achiles heel all season (FT shooting) came back to haunt them in the most pivotal of moments.

by RyanBuff on Apr 8, 2008 9:12 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yea it was

I was rooting for Memphis though, but Kansas did pull it out, way out.

by Kay on Apr 8, 2008 9:14 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

NCAA Title Game

That was a lot of fun to watch.  Whether you were cheering for Kansas or Memphis that shot by Chalmers was the reason we watch sports.

JR is fading on his threes

He is so good when he keeps his balance.  He has made one of three like that from what I have seen, which is not awful, but he shoots so much better when he keeps his balance centered.

by Jeremy on Apr 8, 2008 9:20 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

So much better when we push the pace

It's not even funny. They need to run, run, run no matter when and where they get the ball.

by RyanBuff on Apr 8, 2008 9:21 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

The sad thing is

that they know it, but do not do it.  How come it took Kenyon grabbing a rebound and racing up the floor for them to run?

by Jeremy on Apr 8, 2008 9:24 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Looking better

Denver has played well over the past few minutes.  Clippers take a TO!

by Jeremy on Apr 8, 2008 9:26 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Build this team around Melo as best you can

That's all I can say. He is going to get better. People forget he is still very young.

by RyanBuff on Apr 8, 2008 9:35 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

For all I don't like about Camby

He can sure throw a good lob pass.

by RyanBuff on Apr 8, 2008 9:36 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

You are right

Camby is the best lob passer on the team.

by Jeremy on Apr 8, 2008 9:38 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

I would say

that he probably has been one of their three best players over the second half of the season.

by Jeremy on Apr 8, 2008 9:49 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Film

is overrated when you have tough man to man defenders like the Clippers do.

by Jeremy on Apr 8, 2008 9:48 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Melo

is on fire again.  Good to see.  Maybe they will win this time though.

by Jeremy on Apr 8, 2008 10:02 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Hate to jinx it
And I shouldn't even be saying this considering how we've been playing but this looks like it will be a W.

by RyanBuff on Apr 8, 2008 10:06 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Clippers look done

I have a difficult time seeing them coming back, but if anyone will let them back in it, the Nuggets will.

by Jeremy on Apr 8, 2008 10:10 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

lol, yep

Remember the game in Milwaukee?

by RyanBuff on Apr 8, 2008 10:13 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Iverson not playing badly either

Good to see. We really need him to step up big if we are going to make the playoffs.

by RyanBuff on Apr 8, 2008 10:09 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Didn't we lose here

To the Clippers earlier this year? Amazing. Of course they had Kaman, Maggette, etc... then

by RyanBuff on Apr 8, 2008 10:22 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Yes

Kaman abused them in the paint (21 boards), but Maggette sat that game out too

by Jeremy on Apr 8, 2008 10:26 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Looks like we got this one in the bag

I need to go get some work done. Been good chattin with you Jeremy. Go Nuggets.

by RyanBuff on Apr 8, 2008 10:28 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Thanks RB!

Soon everyone will realize how much fun we have and take part.

by Jeremy on Apr 8, 2008 10:31 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Camby

This is the most energy I have seen from him in a long time.

by Jeremy on Apr 8, 2008 10:30 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Sorry I wasn't around

Wish I could have watched gamecast and bitched and moaned with you guys tonight but I was busy.  Hopefully I'll be around for Thursday's showdown.

But now consider this: the Nuggets are 0-1 when I post in a Pickaxe and Roll game thread... and 47-30 when I don't.  Just food for thought.

by LarryB303 on Apr 8, 2008 11:26 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Well then

All I can say is don't come around here anymore, if not for the Nuggs, then for us suicidal fans.

I guess I'm happy they won, but it was against the Clipper. But as Karl would say, teams shouldn't be divided and all are the same and teams under 500 aren't anything less than others and blahblahblahblahblah.

Anywho, hope to see you guys on Thursday.

THE STIFF LIST (as of 2/7 by Andrew)

STIFF #1: THE FUTURE OF THE NBPA
If the NBA owners opening proposal for the new collective bargaining agreement is any indication, we're heading for a lockout in 2011 and after that, smaller contracts, smaller salaries and less revenue shared with the players.

STIFF #2: THE CLIPPERS
After correctly kicking Mike Dunleavy upstairs and rightly installing Kim Hughes as head coach, why are rumors of Isiah Thomas joining the Clips circling around already?

STIFF #3: THE EASTERN CONFERENCE
Rumors of the re-birth of the Eastern Conference have been greatly exaggerated.  Yes, the Cavaliers are awesome but the sixth playoff seed might be sub-.500.  And do you think any of the West's top six teams fear the Celtics, Magic or Hawks?  No chance.

STIFF #4: ANKLE INJURIES
First Carmelo Anthony.  Then Chauncey Billups. And now possibly Arron Afflalo?  Tape those ankles up, dammit!

STIFF #5: NEW JERSEY NETS
4-46 and losers to the lowly Pistons on Saturday night.  But Lawrence Frank was the problem, right?
