Monday off-topic: The Spurs steamroll ahead

Gregg Popovich. Best coach in the league? Yep.

The train that is the San Antonio Spurs just advanced to the Western Conference Finals yesterday by sweeping the Los Angeles Clippers. Folks, it isn't even that close. The Clippers were outclassed in every single way. While the entire country has been gratuitously slurping the Oklahoma City Thunder or the Miami Heat, maybe it's time to give some attention to the team that has won 18 games in a row since the end of the regular season.

Tim Duncan is rolling. Tony Parker is ballin'. The rest of the team is playing fantastically, and Gregg Popovich is proving that, once again, he is by leaps and bounds the best coach in the NBA. It's not even close. Look out for the train that is the Spurs, they might just run over you.

Saturday Off-Topic: Lakers prevail in Game 3

Photo

After losing the first two games in Oklahoma City, the Los Angeles Lakers and their tremendous free throw shooting prevailed over the Thunder 99-96. Is this a series now? Will the Lakers come back in game 4 and even the series, or will the Thunder steal a game in LA and go ahead 3-1?

It should be noted that, while the Thunder escaped with a victory in game 2, their offense hasn't been what you would call "potent" since game 1. In fact, the Lakers have done exactly what the did with the Nuggets ... muck up the game. Make it slow and keep working at putting the clamps down on James Harden (who, it can be argued, is the Thunder's most important player).

Golden Nuggets: Masai Ujiri makes the sports talk rounds

Nuggets GM Masai Ujiri made the sports talk rounds yesterday.

Yesterday, Denver Nuggets General Manager Masai Ujiri made the sports talk rounds to talk about the Nuggets future and off-season plans. In a morning talk with reporters, he mentioned that Andre Miller, who came up big in the playoffs and down the stretch this last season, has expressed a desire to stay with the Nuggets. Later in the day, Ujiri spoke with several different radio shows to talk about the Nuggets' future. Specifically Miller, JaVale McGee, and the recently maligned Danilo Gallinari.

Just listening to the interview with CJ and Kreckman ... I get the feeling the Nuggets were encouraged by Gallo's exit interview, and would like to see his further development next season. Same thing with McGee. Sounds like the Nuggets are highly determined to re-sign JaVale and are willing to pay a pretty penny to do so. You get the feeling the Nuggets are semi-happy with the team they have, and want to give it a year before they make drastic changes. Of course, that could all change if they got a call from a team with an unbelievable offer. You never know.

The Nuggets cannot begin negotiations with Miller, McGee and Rudy Fernandez until July. I personally don't expect any drastic changes this off season unless that mystery team calls with an offer they can't refuse. I'd think that, if the Nuggets are going to deal, the trade deadline next season would be better, at least that will give them time to determine if the team as constructed can't develop any further.

Off Topic Wednesday: Spurs grab early 1-0 lead over Clippers

Photo

The NBA playoffs are rolling along ... the Lakers got blown out in Game 1 by the Thunder. The Spurs had their way, with 13 three-pointers, the Clippers in Game 1 and the Pacers tied up their series with the Miami Heat 1-1 with a three point last night.

Golden Nuggets: Denver future is bright!

One of the people in this picture won't be back next season....probably.

After a disappointing (but not altogether unpredictable) loss in Game 7 to the Lakers, it's time to look forward to what proves to be an interesting off-season for the Nuggets. There may be changes to this roster, but is that the right thing for this club?

Let's find out ...

A eulogy for the 2011-12 Denver Nuggets season ...

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
