Hochman feature story on Masai Ujiri

Benjamin Hochman of the Denver Post has a FANTASTIC feature story up about Masai Ujiri today in the Post. It's a must read for Nuggets fans, so click right here and go read it. A small sample,

"I sit in those GM meetings and look across the room — you see Larry Bird, Danny Ainge, all these guys who you've read about," Ujiri said at a recent lunch at Sushi Sasa. "Am I in awe? Honestly I am, because of the opportunity life has given me..."

I loved his trades

and what he got.. but I am not sold on couple of his extensions (Nene and Affalo)… I think we overpaid for both of them…

OTOH, Gallo’s and KK’s extensions were good… I am curious to see how he deals with Chandler’s extension… If he can sign him to extension below market value, that would be great… or if he can squeeze a first rounder out of him in a sign and trade, that would be perfect as well

Can’t do a sign and trade in season. Nuggets either re-sign WC or he signs somewhere else … if he gets back to the States before March 1st.

That includes signing/playing for the QO, no? … which would make him a FA at seasons end? I forget specifically.

accordingt to Marc Stein if WC signs for the rest of the season he becomes a UFA

but there’s contradictory information out there that says WC would be an RFA. So who knows.

The qualifying offer deadline has passed as well I believe. WC can negotiate one year and multi year deals. Still don’t get how he can become UFA like Stein is reporting … Nuggets getting ripped off in a way.

he can become an UFA

if he signs a two year deal, being the second with a qualifying offer. I think.

Yeah, it's becoming quite clear that Ujiri running the Nuggets is a blessing for Denver fans.

Even if you have complaints about a couple of his signings, he’s by-and-large making the right moves. His next exam: what happens to our team at the trade deadline, especially in the wake of our team struggling to overcome key injuries and needing to maintain enough momentum to qualify for the postseason.

And yes, that was a fantastic article.

It's also worth noting his interest in Speights

While not a budding star, he has filled in admirably for Memphis.
I’ve remained curious over Howard’s potential trade, not that we’d end up with him, but that Denver has lots of assets for facilitating such a trade. No rumors as yet, though.

Speights impresses more and more as the season develops

I watch the Grizzlies pretty closely—closest NBA team to where I grew up, and I usually root for newer young head coaches—so I was interested when they picked up Speights after Randolph went down. Seemed like a space-filler at first, just another big body who fit well enough to give them a few minutes at the 4 here and there.

Not anymore. Take a look at his stats the last few games. His impact is even clearer if you can watch the games. Wouldn’t want to overstate his accomplishments, but nice move by Memphis to find somebody on another team’s bench who can learn a system and make them better.

Formerly KarlFanHenry, which no longer accurately describes me, though my new screen name sure as hell does.

He is the magnificent bastard

I do worry that other teams are taking notice and may steal him away from us. Love what he has done so far, although I feel the extensions to Nene and Affalo wasn’t necessary

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
