SBN Dallas: Nuggets vs. Mavericks preview

I helped out Jonathan Tjarks of SBN Dallas with his preview for tonight's Nuggets game. Cruise over and check out my answers, Q&A style, to his five questions. Link here. Teaser after the jump ...

Star-divide

5) What do you think the key to Wednesday's Mavs/Nuggets game will be?

This will be the third meeting between Denver and Dallas. The Nuggets play in Denver against the Phoenix Suns the night before Wednesday's game, so Karl must find a way to keep his team fresh. A blowout over the Suns would be preferred to get some guys some rest, but the key to beating Dallas is always the same for Denver. Run the Mavs to death, use your defense to turn Dallas into a jump shooting bunch (and contest those jumpers), and get Dirk Nowitzki out of his normal comfort spots.

For the Mavs ... they'll need to do what they did to the Nuggets in Denver on Feb. 8th. Turn Denver into a half-court team, don't turn the ball over, and hope the Nuggets three-point shots are not falling.

Let me be the first to tell you

That this is a winnable game for the injury-depleted Nuggets.

But it will be tough.

Is your love worth the nausea it could bring?

Let's hope the Nuggets have revenge on their minds after the last meeting

Also factor in Brewer playing his old team again (missed the last game and the Nugs missed him), this time in a starting role, and AAA coming back to form.

This is a winnable game if the fatigue doesnt catch up

I was at the last Dallas game and there was ZERO energy, Carlisle’s defensive scheme was set to jam the paint and double Nene and/or Lawson. Shots were not falling and switches were late and lazy. Minutes seemed to be evenly spread yesterday but I have said that before and the Nuggies came out the next game completely lagging. Any word on Mozzy or Nene?

by Mancar on Feb 15, 2012 11:58 AM MST reply actions

No go..

Both expected to miss tonight’s game. Moz is closer to being ready..

meh. Still winable.

who draws the Dirk assignment? because Faried certainly didn’t scratch a minute last Dallas game.

by Mancar on Feb 15, 2012 12:01 PM MST up reply actions

Hmmm..

At the start of the game, who knows. But if the game is in crunch, I bet Big Al gets the call.

by djyoung71 on Feb 15, 2012 12:03 PM MST up reply actions

BREWER!

But Al will certainly guard Dirk at times.

These are really the only two Nuggets that have the length and athleticism to keep with Dirk. But if Harrington is on him for much of the game, heaven help us all as Dirk goes for 80 points.

As long as Dallas as a team only scores 85

I’m fine with that :p

Just don't hold on to the damn basketball!!!

by Russscot on Feb 15, 2012 12:35 PM MST up reply actions

man if that happened

the press would have a field day with it, not headlining it was in a loss but the fact that Dirk scored 80 points!!! The headline would be Dirk Goes Mad, Scores 80- and then in extremely fine print on the bottom of the next page under the liposuction add next to the NEED A LAWYER 1800 number it would state: Nuggets win.

Blurryy Ty

Need Ty to be at his blurriest. Mentality that he wants to score 50 tonight.

Be ready to watch Dirk get a zillion shots tonight and a lot of double teaming. With no Gallo or Nene, Nuggets don’t really have anyone to guard him. Faried vs. Dirk… lace those sneakers up tight rook….

by djyoung71 on Feb 15, 2012 11:59 AM MST reply actions

I really want to see Brewer on Dirk

I think K2 and Bird are too slow and I think Faried lacks the length to guard the seven-foot sharp shooter.

Regardless, it is tough to think of a scenario where Dirk doesn’t kill the Nuggets, as Denver just is not a good perimeter team.

Hopefully Denver can find a way to shut down the rest of the Mavericks, and the key here will again be Denver’s backcourt of Lawson and Afflalo, who’ve already done most of the heavy lifting on this two-game win streak.

I'd like to see some revenge for last week's L the Nuggets took.

A very positive thing heading into tonight’s game: Corey Brewer was the only Nugget to log 30+ minutes last night. The starting line-up, and the Nuggets’ two main offensive threats (Lawson & Afflalo), should be as fresh as they possibly can be in a back-to-back situation.

A negative heading into tonight’s game: Andre Miller & Al Harrington’s performance has been steadily declining the past couple weeks, and a back-to-back should only hurt the veterans. Harrington has been missing shots & lost his explosiveness off the dribble we got used to seeing for the first month of the season, and Andre Miller seems to be making more & more careless turnovers. Andersen had a great performance last night, but looked absolutely spent in the 4th Q, and cannot be expected to give a repeat performance, or anything close, tonight.

Harrington & Miller both need to step up tonight, otherwise the Nuggets will be in for a tough one.

of topic question. What is Aaron Brooks status, has he signed with someone?

If not would he be an option to sign and backup Ty then use Miller as a tradeable asset?

by Mancar on Feb 15, 2012 12:05 PM MST reply actions

I believe he's an RFA

so Houston would still have his rights, like the Nuggets and Chandler.

Just don't hold on to the damn basketball!!!

Doh!

forgot about that trade :p

Ronnie Price isn't a bad player

Didn’t he play well against the Nuggets when he was with the Jazz if I recall?

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
