George Karl's blunder

Ridiculous, terrible, unexplainable, these are just some of the words to explain George Karl and his late game antics. You would think that after a team goes on a run to tie the game after being down by double digits, this would enable a coach to call a timeout. No not GK, he is too smart for that, he knows better because confidence is overrated. What about his lineups they would surely hide GK's faults, no not at all lets let Memphis gets two straight offensive rebounds and ice the game with a three. His three guard lineup was what killed the lead. KILLED IT. There is no rhyme or reason for his stupid lineups. This game was HANDED to the Grizz. Get your act together old man, play depth, stop being so FREAKIN STUBBORN. I know we couldn't hit free throws when it mattered, but the blame also has to go to his stupid three/four guard lineup. His team looked too comfortable but you know what they say: attitude reflects leadership. We could very well be 17-3 this season if it wasn't for his coaching. Do i think I can do better. No, but as a fan I get the benefit of the doubt and the ability to nitpick.

On a separate note AAA looks soo lost and out of shape, I think he needs to start coming off the bench for the time being. (I might get some flak for saying that)

absolutely agreed

I am really tired of his two PG lineups…it’ll work for a small stretch of time but in crunch time, we need to get bigger…why play both Ty and Andre when you could use Gallo’s size in there?

Also, AAA and Andre's body language SUCK!

I know that is how Andre walks and acts, but to me, a leader doesnt act LACKADAISCAL!

I guess it just doesn't matter....

I will eat crow and say that we are much better than I thought we were going to be this year and with the possibility of going deeper in the playoffs, I just wish we could some changes in GK’s coaching style. We are getting to a point in the season where “experimenting” will become too difficult as the team chemistry is starting to solidify with who is getting the playing time. It is just frustrating – and this year, there aren’t any “villains” to blame some of the bad games on – this is a good group of players. The leader (GK) needs to lead. I blew out my frustration in the post game posts – but honestly – this game was on the verge of being a blowout FOR the Nuggets several times and GK let them back in the game. I’ve been frustrated for years about his decisions.

YUUPPPP!

My sentiments exactly.
This BRILLIANT coach ought to be put in the league with Weathermen. He’s back to saving his TO’s to cash in at the end of the season. GEORGE KARL should have been gone last year with his Jackson Popovich wanna be a

Nice post

The funny thing is the things you pointed out aren’t even big in the grand scheme of things….

He butchered so many more decisions. Bleh Karl.

Also, if by AAA

You mean Andre Miller being out of shape, that’d be about accurate.

AAA also

but not physical shape, Afflalo is way out of game shape at this moment. He is showing flashes of last year, but not enough to warrant the contract he got. I know he will tighten his game up at some point, but when will that be?

Let's start a riot!

Who knows

I’m not so sure about the back-seat driving. Karl works with momentum and matchups. Gallo was defended hard this game; Ty was a little rusty. They just weren’t focused as the Bears were. They need to get chewed out at the 4th quarter like someone was going to cut their, -- ears off. They shouldn’t have lost several games…. on the other hand, they shouldn’t have beaten Philly…. they used to be the 4th quarter team! Their defense is again the key… not the offense….they aren’t punishing with their speed anymore…

by Charles R. Murray on Feb 1, 2012 10:59 AM MST reply actions

why shouldn't they have beaten Philly?

That game was close from the third on. I will give GK this- he does not let our team get blown out. Our worst losses of the seasons have been by ten points and those were lost because of poor execution, rotation, and play calling down the stretch. In the Utah game he left Birdman and Harrington on Paul Millsap AFTER he just rattled off 10 straight points. In the NOLA game he left in his famous three guard lineup even after we got down by 8 points. Small Ball has its advantages, but it shouldn’t have been used in certain situations. “insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”

Fairly new to the site....

but is there always this much vitriol for one of the leagues best coaches? I was absolutely sick last night after the loss like i’m sure everyone else was, but so far this season we have been in EVERY SINGLE GAME! Even in the losses there was a chance to win. I’d much rather look at it that way as opposed to blaming Karl for the reason we’re not 20-1.

Everyone's bitter after such a loss

The turnovers didn’t do them any favors, but neither did GK’s bizzarro coaching down the stretch.

There are a number of ways to rate a coach

regular season wins
playoff wins
championships

george is great in the first category below avg in the 2nd and a big 0 in the third.

Funnily enough

only this much after losses, shocking, huh? Everyone needs a goat to escape on…

do you consider karI a great coach because other ppl say he's a great coach and he has a Iot of wins.

or do you consider him a great coach, because you watch the games, and go yea great coaching there, way to come up with those pIays, these rotations makes a Iot of sense to me, and way to caII a TO to re group your team. great coaches dont Iet their teams get bIown out in the 1st round for so and so seasons.

by Rys on Feb 1, 2012 6:55 PM MST up reply actions

That's a long conversation there.

Karl knows how to win games! Do I agree with his substitutions and the lack of time outs at certain parts of the game? Not always. Phil Jackson has a similar coaching style. I’d say it was pretty successful for him. And yeah, we’ve had some bad losses. We’ve also had a few games that we won but should have lost. Last nights loss was because of turnovers. Even with those, if Miller sinks his free throws we win that game. You can’t put that on substitutions or lack of TO’s.

by Larry Cunningham on Feb 1, 2012 9:53 PM MST up reply actions

We should not have been a position where Miller needed to make his free's

Being in that situation you can chalk up to a number factors but one of them for sure is rotations and weird matchups. Another is me being stubborn so that I will not make a change even though the guys on the floor are not getting it done. Why was it so easy for Tony Allen to get boards in the last quarter? Some change needed to be done.

by georgekarl on Feb 1, 2012 10:13 PM MST up reply actions

Which game should the Nuggets have lost and won?

This is the best team in Karl’s tenure in Denver. No drama queens and they like to play defense. Karl is the F U here

by samdman on Feb 2, 2012 6:35 AM MST up reply actions

Phil Jackson may be one to let his team play through rough stretches

but he never used small ball.

The difference between Jackson and Karl: Karl is a legend in his own mind, but Jackson is a bona fide legend.

It’s as though he’s too obtuse to do the obvious. Stubborn. Foolish. Hence, losses ensue which should easily have been wins.

by Ski Bum on Feb 2, 2012 6:41 AM MST up reply actions

LOL come on guys.

Phil Jackson palayed small ball ALL THE TIME. You are only remembering the recent Laker teams that had Gasol and Bynum starting and had Odom as the 1st guy off the bench. The 1st 3peat in LA had Shaq who was always on the floor and when he’s on the the floor it’s never small ball. But when he wasn’t there were times that Big Shot Bob would play center at 6’9". Those Bulls teams played small ball ALOT! They would play long stretches were Rodman or Toni Kukoc were the biggest guys on the floor.
@samdman I’ll give you 3 games NJ, Philly, and NYK. There were various things that went right for us to win those games. You have to say coaching was one of them. It’s unfair to say Karl is reason for the losses, but has nothing to do with the wins.

by Larry Cunningham on Feb 2, 2012 10:52 AM MST up reply actions

Just now got that rock in the stomach feeling out because of

G Karl.

That loss to Memphis was THE worst loss of the year because it was the only loss where our opponent 1) did not look to be the better team in general and 2) did not seem to play better than we played that particular game.

Karls substitutions are strange and ultimately lead to losses now and in the future.

1) Why doesnt Moz play when it is evident we are getting KILLED on the boards. Let him get his 6 fouls. Play him on defense if you need to and remove on offense at end games. His blocking shots is invaluable.

2) Gallo was terrible in that game, offensively. He should still have played in crunch time. Is he one of our “stars” or not? If so, he needs to play because you, I, believe that he is better trusted than most everybody else even when he’s had a bad shooting night. And, unlike other Nugs, he’ll make his damn free throws!

3) Relatedly, I love AAA but there was no reason for Karl to show trust in AAA at this time. Lets contrast to Gallo. Gallo has had a few off quarters for sure but AAA has not put together a solid game in around 10 months.

Who would you go with, a player who hasnt given you reason to trust him because of whats transpired over 10 months or a player who has been a borderline star this year and has had a couple of off games?

As the game wound down the Grizz must have been salivating at getting to the basket with no resistance, at having their main guy not have to go against a 6’10, savy, athletic small forward, at not having to worry about a SG that hasnt been right for 10 months.

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
