Hypothetical trade that gets us a center (but still won't happen)

It's a big one, but the NBA trade machine wouldn't let it happen because of restrictions about players being traded twice within 2 months... would have to wait until February 12.

Four-teamer. Buckle up.

Star-divide

DENVER sends Bird ($4.2M -3 yrs), Moz ($2.2M - 2 yrs) and Jordan Hamilton ($1.4M average - 4 yrs) to NEW ORLEANS

N.O. sends Kaman ($14.1M expiring) and Eric Gordon ($3.8M - 1 year) to ORLANDO.

ORLANDO sends Dwight Howard ($18M - 2 yrs) to NEW JERSEY, and Quentin Richardson ($2.6ish - 3 yrs) to DENVER

NEW JERSEY sends Okur ($10.9M expiring) to ORLANDO, Anthony Morrow ($4M - 2 years) to N.O, and finally Brook Lopez ($3.1M expiring) to DENVER

Why it works:

New Orleans - shed Kaman and Gordon, continue to further tank and get (most likely) 2 high lottery picks for the upcoming draft, which is the best one in years. Also get a young, athletic C (Moz), and useable bench veterans (Bird and Morrow, who can score in bunches). Can build with a young core of 2 lottery picks, Aminu, Moz, Jack, Hamilton and will be about $20M under the cap next year (and more if they amnesty Okafor or Ariza). They didn't extend Gordon, so they might not think he's good enough to build the team around)

Orlando - gets almost $30M in cap space to work with next year, a potential building block with Gordon, and still has a team of quality (but aging) veterans. Not an enormous value for Howard, but in today's NBA, cap space is king.

New Jersey - Dwight, meet Deron. Deron, Dwight. Let's go have fun in Bucktown.

Denver - gets a legit center to play with Nene, and could be re-signed relatively cheap because of injury issues.

Now granted, this will NEVER happen, but I was bored today and decided to play GM for a Day. Discuss. Tear it apart. Just try not to call me names. ;-)

Hard to see New Orleans giving up Gordon

Especially for Moz and Hamilton. Think they would have to get a number of first rounders to think about doing that deal. Unlikely to take on Andersen’s contract as well.

It’s a good deal for Orlando as they get a building block with Gordon.

Also a good deal for New Jersey as they get Dwill to stay, and Dwight as a second huge piece.

Denver gets Brook, who I am a fan of, although it’s more of a PF then a C. Nene doesn’t want to play center extensively, so I don’t see the deal being good for Denver either. It does improve Denver’s front line probably in the short-term.

Can't see it, and Nuggets don't need it

“Denver – gets a legit center to play with Nene, and could be re-signed relatively cheap because of injury issues.” That description alone is enough to make your post a head-scratcher. Don’t think I need to elaborate.

Onward to more salient territory. We. Don’t. Need. A. Center. The Nuggets need a tough banger-scorer who can get baskets when the going gets tough, a la Millsap, though I’m not saying it needs to be him. We have a legit center who needs minutes and coaching. (We also have a decent back-up who came cheap. Yeah, he’s listed as ‘F’, but Karl isn’t gonna play a true center enough, anyway.) Look at how Tiago Splitter has developed. He was a bit of a Stiff for a couple of years, yet here he is this year contributing prominently to some of the Spurs’ wins. Mozgov has a pretty high ceiling, too.

I hope it’s not news that the Nuggets aren’t going to win this year’s NBA championship. The careful roster management that Ujiri has undertaken has the potential to pay off very soon. This team is close. A little more tinkering and a true NBA season (read: no reprehensible labor actions by ownership that result in a CRAP schedule with little preparation time) are all that’s required to get the Nuggets into serious contention.

Let’s not fuck it up. Thank goodness, we can’t.

No. More. Stickyball.

This is interesting

I think it works for everyone except Denver interestingly. But I like your line of thinking.

Lopez averages 17.4 ppg and 7.6 rebounds.

I’m not sure how legit he is over Mozgov. He has played for awful NJ teams and is now coming off a broken foot. Never a good thing when a big man starts having foot issues … no thanks.

I'm liking Mozgov more and more every game

once he gets his confidence up(and keeps it there) I think he’ll be the perfect C for our team, and his shot is real pretty for a 7’1 guy

I can make up 20 trade scenarios

where we get Lebron, Dwight, and Chris Paul for under the cap, but it doesn’t mean I’m going to share it with everyone.. Oi.

I like DeAndre Jordan

Because he was pissing off Mozgov the other night and It was nice to see Moz get some fire in his belly. I want to see more of that not Brooks Lopez.

Interesting, but...

Orlando could get Andruw Bynum right now for Howard. That throws a monkey wrench in everyone’s Howard to “you fill in the blank” trade scenarios. I just don’t see Them taking less than that unless they are being spiteful.

sorry.

that some people think that Mozgov is the greatest thing since vodka… but if he’s not going to be in the game as Memphis continues to get offensive rebounds and make threes during a comeback, I guess it doesn’t matter anyway.

My point is that Lopez would be an upgrade, and an upgrade that would more than likely be on the floor in the 4th Q. Mozgov is not that guy.

As long as the league owns the Hornets

It’ll be hard for this to happen. It would lower the value of the Hornets franchise (yes, they’d get a top 3 lottery pick, but they’d lose perhaps the only marketable player on their team)

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
