The Nuggies need a late game general!!!

While watching the Clippers Thunder game it became clear what the Nuggets lack....

Star-divide

The Clippers Thunder game wasn't a great game by any means, but it did show me what the Nuggets lack, and what will eventually be their downfall. Towards the end of the game the Thunder cut the Clippers lead to 10, which triggered Chris Paul to go into take over mode, and close the game out. It's not necessarily the points he scored, it's the way in which he orchestrated the team. The entire team knew what their roles were in that situation, and what to do. The word field general is over used today, but CP3 is the epitome of that phrase.

This leads me to the Nuggets.... I've watched everyone of our games this year and it has become clear that the Nuggs players don't know their roles in crunch time situations at the end of the games. Some people have said that it's an advantage that a number of Nuggets could potentially step up and hit that shot, but the problem with that sentence is the word potentially. Many nights that potentially anyone, has turned out to be actually no one. The Nuggs need a guy who assumes the role of orchestrator in the closing minutes, and has the ability to get everyone else on board and ready to play their role.

The problem the Nuggs have is there isn't many guys in the league that can do what CP3 did against the Thunder (Deron Williams, Wade, Dirk, Kobe, Manu, Melo, and maybe a couple more I missed). As hard as this is to say, I just don't see Ty Lawson becoming that type of player. He has the potential, but just doesn't impose his will on the game in the right moments. I think Gallo could become this type of player, but once again, he hasn't stepped up to the task. We have Andre Miller who is a fine point guard, but he lacks the offensive skills to completely dominate a late game situation consistently. I believe this will be our eventual downfall this year as we fall short yet again in the playoffs (maybe second round this year). Some people think that one of our young guys could step up and become this player, but if you've watched the league for a while, you know that players who have that skill show it early in their careers, and they are hard to come by.

The Nuggs core moving forward is Nene, AAA (who has completely sucked this year), and Gallo for sure. I know people may disagree with what I'm about to say, but I think we should look to move Lawson for someone with that "it" factor. He's the only guy who isn't locked up for the future. If I were the Nuggs brass, I would throw a max contract at Deron Williams with a sign and trade for Lawson this offseason and see what happens. Deron has said he is all about winning, and that playing in a big market isn't his number one priority like other stars. It's a slight chance in hell it would work, but until we have a guy who can compose a team like Deron or CP3 can, I think the Nuggs are going to be hard pressed to make it to the WCF let alone win it.

Recently Josh Kronke was on 1043 the fan (Click Here), and even he admitted that the Nuggs were still a move away from being in championship contention. I'm sure Josh and Masai will look at all available options. What do you think?

Chris Paul is probably the best crunch time player in the NBA, so getting out-executed by him will happen on occasion. That said, what I saw from the Nuggets was pretty good in the last two minutes: 2 Nene dunks, they got a bunny for Al that he just blew, then the ref screwed over Nene as he discarded Chauncey (who grabbed him) in great position to score. So the Nuggets created good shots in crunch time last night, and have done so in other close games as well (vs. Philly and the Knicks for example). Close games will always be more or less a coin flip, so as long as the Nuggets aren’t totally failing to get good looks I’m not terribly worried about it.

We did get some good looks, but do you actually think Nene would have hit two free throws?

You’re right that the play calling was good and we got good looks, however, in other games it seems like we play hot potato with the ball for the last shot. I understand CP3 is the best Point in the league, and everyone gets out classed by him, but we do lack that player coach who puts everyone in the correct position to score, or can do it himself late game. In the playoffs, that’s huge!

nene hit two huge FTs against the Knickerbockers. I’ll take 2 Nene FTs in a late game possession…

the diference btw CP3 and Lawson

Cp3 was the no. 4 pick on a shitty team. He was starting from day one and no questions he got the last pass/shot. This is what made him great, experience in the clutch. Ty has had Melo, CB, gallo, felton, and Dre in his way. I think ty can do these things, he just needs experience.

Also cp3 is a much more versatile player. Better passer, shooter and more creative. He also has a beautiful floater that ty doesn’t.

Honestly I think Gallo can develop into that clutch player who can get to the line, score or make the good pass. He is the one George is giving the touches to in clutch situations. 10million is a screaming deal for Gallo.

CP3 was on a crappy team..

but I’m more concerned with how he puts everyone else on the court in the right position. He doesn’t score in every late game situation, but he always makes the right play. Lawson hasn’t figured that out. Hell Melo never really figured out when to take over games, and when to get his team involved. Very few players have the smarts to play the game the way Kobe, CP3 ext. can do.

Gallo could become that guy, but I haven’t seen that “it” in him. His late game shots haven’t had the same purpose that you would see from other players. In the Knicks game it was the free throws, but we wont always get those whistles. Earlier in the year against the Lakers, he missed a bunny that could have led to a W.

What about the games we did close out

Like in NY or Phillie, or Washington, even LAL at home? Do those games get thrown away because we had a bad close out vs. the Lakers?
I do think we aren’t a title team yet, but it isn’t a closer that we need, just a banger or a shotmaker (possibly Wilson Chandler)

Gotta love the haterz. Keep that hate a comin'

I wouldn't give up on Ty that easy

I think he will develop into a clutch player.

Right now the Nuggets are going with the “go with the guy that’s hot” philosphy. It has worked pretty well (NY and Philly) and could have worked the other night but for a few tough calls. Plus, Ty was out.

It's just 1 loss.

You know what makes this really ironic is that if Lawson had played Sunday, The Nuggets probably win that game! LOL
Every player has his strengths and weaknesses. Even Paul. If Lawson starts getting calls when he drives the lane you will see how much better he orchestrates this team. Trust me.

settle down

let’s not give up on our best player, with several years of improvement left, 20 games into his first full season as a starter. I’ll grant that if we could get D-Will straight up for him, we would have to at least consider it, but there is about a 5% chance that he would sign with denver.

Nearly every team needs Chris Paul

Deron Williams is an asshole. There. I said it. If it gets me in trouble with the moderators, I’ll just look at it like that hard foul in crunch time that draws a flagrant 1. It needed to be done/said.

Contrary to what you read from some fans on this very blog about his being overrated, Chris Paul is an extra-special NBA point guard. There are very few professional athletes with his combination of elite skills. It’s been said again and again, but it’s as true as the day is long: in addition to his other talents, Paul is a master of pacing in the NBA game. He is the equivalent of a track star or race car driver on the NBA court. He knows when and how to put the hammer down.

It was on display like crazy in last night’s Clippers-Thunder game. In addition to closing the game with utter brilliance, Paul had other stretches in which he demonstrated why he’s among the toughest threats to stop in the league. No one knew if, or from where, he would shoot. Nor did they know if, or to whom, he would pass. He got off shots over the leading blocker in the league. He nailed necessary jumpers early in the clock even though those are shots he rarely takes. He also took every bit of time off the clock and then nailed jumpers or got to the basket. He was in command of his game, others’ games, and the game.

Such a player doesn’t come along very often. Yeah, you read it here first. The Nuggets can’t just dream one up. And please see above re: Deron Williams. Plus, he is no Chris Paul.

The Nuggets’ roster development under Ujiri is coming along just fine. He has a plan, just as Presti had one, to get this team deeper into contention, and soon. He’s aware that more tinkering is required, but we don’t need a superstar. In my opinion, what we need is a tough banger-scorer who can nail shots when the going gets tough, a la Paul Millsap. But I defer to the front office. (Sarcasm alert: the FO isn’t paying attention to me or to any of us.))

By the way, Ty Lawson is excellent

He’s so young! This is his third year in the league! He hasn’t yet been a starting point guard for a full season! He’s never gonna be Chris Paul, but he’s a true NBA point guard who has the potential to contribute tremendously to a contending team. His speed and smarts already make the difference in some games, as they well might have against a hot, talented and extremely motivated Clippers team. And that was a game we nevertheless nearly won.

Let’s cheer these guys on and stop beating the trade drum. These fabulous players and the front office deserve our support!

The only reason I bring up Ty

is he’s the only guy who we haven’t recently locked up. I don’t think were are going to develop a player with that “it.” You have it or you don’t. Ty will be a really good player, and is nothing to snuff at, but I don’t think he will ever be great. If we could use him to bring in that guy, then so be it.

You may think D-Will is an ass clown, but he is way better than Ty Lawson will ever be. He’s no Chris Paul, but he can control games like CP3 can. I just want that championship in Denver, and can see that we are still a move or two away. I’m not worried about these regular season loses, but am worried that the same things will happen in the playoffs. Go Nuggets!

If you just watched the Grizzlies game

This is EXACTLY what I’m talking about. Our offensive possessions in the end of the 4th and overtime were bad. It seems like we lack purpose at the end of game situations. Ty did nothing in terms of setting the table, or playing floor General. He was never a threat to score and the Grizz knew it. The Nuggets need to do something different if we want to win in the playoffs, or we will be watching replays just like this one as we get bounced out of the playoffs in the first or second round.

Oh yeah

I blame it on:

1) GEORGE KARL and his extremely strange line-ups. Dad hasn’t really given Ty Lawson the car keys. His development is stunted by Karl’s playing Miller with Ty. The kid needs to be out there by himself running this fucking team. We have shooting guards who can play the game, and we don’t need three of them on the goddamned floor at once. We need rotations that make some sense.

2) We need someone who can get their own shot when the going gets tough, a la Paul Millsap or Brandon Bass. I watched Bass do it tonight toward the end of the Celtics win over the Cavs. Who wants the ball? Who can get it to them?

I have no idea what you mean about Lawson never being a threat to score. If he had the car keys, along with sets that featured him, he’d be killing other teams right and left. Maybe you missed his attacks on the basket tonight? And when they collapsed in the lane, he popped the ball outside like a rocket. And the guy can shoot the three.

Andre Miller is an excellent NBA player, but that doesn’t mean he has to be on the floor every second that matters. LET LAWSON HAVE THE FUCKING TEAM!

No. More. Stickyball.

Lawson did drive to the hole

but not at the end of the game or in overtime when we needed it most. You can blame Karl for the play calling, but Ty’s gotta take this team on his shoulders and will them to a win. i just didn’t see any of that in crunch time. He disappeared for the most part.

by smoil on Feb 1, 2012 1:24 AM MST up reply actions

He does need to take the team on his shoulders

Of course, he can’t or won’t as long as Miller is on the floor with him much of the time, especially in the fourth quarter. This has been debated endlessly on another thread, so I’ll let it drop here.

Keep Ty

Pretty obvious that we need a sg who can create his own shot (w/n a team concept) who that is I have no idea. Or we can try to trade dre and a low #1 for Nash. 100% agree w need a guy in the clutch

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
