The American-Greek is back in the fold with a reasonable extension that will pay him roughly $3 million per season from 2012-15. The 2014-15 season is a team option.

This is a sign that Bird is leaving soon

I really would like Bird for a 2nd rounder next year. I like the contract, he is getting paid the same as Petro is making but is a superior big man off the bench than Petro who as all Nuggets know infamously as the guy who has a left foot for a right foot and a right foot for a left foot and was still better than Malik Allen…

I hate it

Why the love? The Nuggets had a ton of flexibility next year to sign another free-agent, potentially a max, and they’ve crippled that with this signing. Koufus wasn’t going for that much more in the free market anyway.

by rxmart2 on Jan 25, 2012 5:04 PM MST reply actions

Miller is coming off the books

Still plenty of flexibility.

It will be tough to sign a max...

but yes they have flexibility. My point is that the Nuggets could have risk-free put themselves in a position to land Dwight Howard. Let’s forget for a second that he wants to play on the coast, etc. IF he makes it to free agency, there won’’t be a better option than Denver from a championship equity perspective.

As long as you’re not risking too much, I think you’re better off not signing Kouf to give yourself more of a chance to land a transcendent player like Dwight. It’s a 5% chance, but the risk was so small.

by rxmart2 on Jan 25, 2012 5:10 PM MST up reply actions

We are talking about a max player now?

I saw your post in the Gallo thread, and I know you want Dwight Howard, hell I’d love a Lawson/Gallo/Howard team, but Howard isn’t coming to Denver… Do you really want to hold out onto that 2% chance he comes here?

by CloudBurst on Jan 25, 2012 5:11 PM MST up reply actions

And you want to sacrifice that 2% chance

so that we can throw $3mil a year at Koufos?

I don’t think it’s that we believe we’re necessarily going to be able to lure a max contract player here, but why would you remove that option before we even get a chance? Considering our first round draft pick will likely be taking up another $1.5-$2mil more of cap as well.

They can dump Koufos

and that contract any time they want. Real easy to get someone to take a 7 footer like Koufos making 3 million for two years. If they need the room, they can probably get a 2nd rounder for him. This move doesn’t hurt their flexibility at all.

Exactly

It’s a very reasonable signing, in my opinion.

Yes.... absolutely!

Holding out on Gallo, no. Holding out on Kosta, who figures to be a career 8-9th man, yes!! The Gallo signing definitely upped Denver’s chances at acquiring a superstar because it added stability to their lineup.

Teams have cleared their rosters for much less. We aren’t talking about cleaning house throw our hat in the D12 lottery. Kosta could have been had for about the same at the end of the season.

It’s not horrible news, but I just think it’s an unnecessary signing at this point.

by rxmart2 on Jan 25, 2012 5:19 PM MST up reply actions

To be honest

This deal is such a head scratcher that I have no choice but to believe Masai has something else up his sleeve.

Howard wants Maximum Exposure In A Big Market

To grow his Brand. He wouldn’t play here for any money. Wouldn’t want him anyway cause he’d cost too much and get injured. Great player…but can’t shoot.

by Nuggburg on Jan 25, 2012 5:25 PM MST up reply actions

This

But, I’d still be happy to have Howard as a Nugget. But he definitely doesn’t want to come here. It’s a cowtown. Moo!

And Howard doesn’t need to shoot. Just needs to dunk it a lot.

We can't get Howard

But it’s not inconcievable to step into Houston’s role and land Pau in a deal that get’s Howard to LA . .

Orlando gets: Faried/Moz/Chandler/Picks from Denver and LA + their choice of LA players

Denver gets: Pau + out choice of Walton/Metta or Blaker

LA gets: Dwight/Hedo/Dre/Bird

by Frontrange on Jan 25, 2012 5:57 PM MST up reply actions

Yeah

I’d not be interested in that deal at all.

Not to mention it is for the wrong Gasol.

Is your love worth the nausea it could bring?

by Fly Agaric on Jan 25, 2012 6:03 PM MST up reply actions

Howard WOULD NOT cost too much

I’m not sure you’re understanding how much he affects a team on the defensive end. What’s more, his skillset (defense, offensive/defensive rebounding) is exactly what the Denver Nuggets lack. Forget about this small/large market mumbo jumbo because it’s just posturing—Dwight will end up with the team that gives him the most championship equity over the next years.

And he never gets hurt.

by rxmart2 on Jan 25, 2012 5:36 PM MST up reply actions

no way he ends up anywhere

but LA, NJ, or Dallas. not gonna show up in a “fly over town.” as awesome as it would be to have him, i think there is <1% chance that we could pick him up. its worth it to try to make a trade for him now (as im sure every team in the league has sent the Magic an offer) but as has been reported, the only team he wants to go to are those listed above. better to focus on our own team building rather than on what a prima dona superstar wants to do to expand his brand

by swmrkev on Jan 25, 2012 5:40 PM MST up reply actions

Agreed.

His preferred teams are Nets, Lakers or Mavs, from what I heard.

by holyMonkey on Jan 25, 2012 5:42 PM MST up reply actions

If you really want him

Then I think the thing to do is move to LA then you will have an awesome chance if having him in your town. The Guy has an ego as big as Melo… He wants Exposure and endorsements and Really fun parties with lots of celebrities, in other words, Los Angeles.

by Nuggburg on Jan 25, 2012 5:43 PM MST up reply actions

Nothing wrong with desiring any of this

And beautiful, successful people do end up in LA. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Howard there. He has a bright future in acting and endorsements. He is a great basketball player, but he is also a real likable and personable guy. His ceiling doing endorsements and expanding his brand outside of basketball is limitless, so long as he’s in a market that isn’t Orlando, etc.

Is your love worth the nausea it could bring?

by Fly Agaric on Jan 25, 2012 5:53 PM MST up reply actions

Howard wants to be a movie star.....Denver is not that atmosphere

Would love to have him and never said the Nuggets wouldn’t need him, just don’t feel the need to waste any thoughts that we have a chance to get him, I have plenty other things to waste time on. Markets do matter unless you are a San Antonio that made it happen in a small market for several years, they are the exception.

seriously stop thinking this, he already wants to leave a team that is a playoff team. He wants a larger market like Melo, he is not coming here, he simply wouldn’t fit here anyways

I realized that…This Is Good News!
KK is a solid depth guy and the price is right.
Whenever Koufos has been given 30 minutes a game… He has shown the ability to produce about 18 pts and over 10 boards. I think K2 can play if given the opportunity.

by Nuggburg on Jan 25, 2012 5:21 PM MST reply actions

im fine with this

this sings of bird getting the axe either through trade, amnesty or a permanent seat on the far end of the bench. maybe send him back to dallas for that second round pick we gave them?

by swmrkev on Jan 25, 2012 5:23 PM MST reply actions

3 y / 9mil . . .

For a reasonable back-up. You can always move that contact if you want to get more cap space. I don’t see this as significantly impacting their flexibility.

At the worst you throw in a second round pick as a sweetner for a servicable rotation big man. You don’t think PDX, LAC, LAL, or even Dallas could use a decent 7 footer back up.

It’s not a needle mover but it certainly doesn’t hurt. . . remember the Avery Johnson signing – that hurt.

Karl has shown that as he gains trust with youth

He starts to play them more often. KK is a development process, but I see him as a solid backup bigman in his stint in Denver.

I think FO thinks Moz, Nene, KK, and Faried are the big guys heading into the future. Not a bad group if you ask me. Especially cuz 3/4 of them can only get better.

Man, the rotations are hard to see.

The Nuggets are getting to Rockets territory … too many assets. Not enough PT to go around. I’d love to see Kouf and Faried be the backups here … we’ll see what happens after this crazy season.

by Nate Timmons on Jan 25, 2012 5:56 PM MST up reply actions

Not only is he making less than Bird...

but according to the salaries at HoopsHype the $3mil he will earn next year (if it’s an even split of the $9mil) is less than the qualifying offer we would have needed to make to him.

North Carolina was the first place in the U.S. that gold was discovered.
David Thompson then moved to Denver and played for the Nuggets.

we dont have cap space for a max

Nene, Gallo, AAA, Al and Ty already puts us at $40M. we’d have to amnesty Bird, trade away Brewer, Moz, Faried, Hamilton and then even with cap holds, we probably still wouldnt have enough for a max contract.

K2 is a good signing

If he gets just a little better, it may end up being a swell deal. Wait for Nene to miss a few games and we’ll see how many minutes he can cover. I understand K2 is a hustler in practice – he and Moz push each other. A little hunger on the bench keeps everyone sharp.

I disagree with all this talk about needing to clear for a max signing. If we make a move it should be for a good young player who fits this team’s philosophy at whatever position looks weakest. And we have plenty of cap room and pieces to make a deal at need.

Anyway, it looks to me like we just signed a near-max player for half-max money in Gallo, so we are ahead of the game.

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
