Stiff List: 1-23-11 by Nate Timmons

  1. Those that missed SNO #5 - If you were in Denver and didn't attend Stiffs Night Out, YOU missed out on a great time, better game, and the chance to have won incredible tickets to the upcoming Raptors game!
  2. Carmelo Anthony - Stays at No. 2 because up until the 2:19 mark of the 4th quarter against the Nuggets, the Melo man was just 3-17 shooting! While he was great late (went 8-18 from the 2:19 mark until the end of the game)... it was his poor early play that helped sink the Knicks.
  3. Billy Cundiff - He missed a chip shot field goal (32 yards) that would have sent his Ravens into overtime against the Patriots, the kick sailed wide left and the Ravens lost. Maybe Cundiff needs to borrow some of Matt Prater's tattoos?
  4. GMs that passed on Iman Shumpert - A total of 16 teams passed on Shumpert in the 2011 NBA draft. As a rookie, he's averaging 12.3 ppg and went for 18 points, 7 assists, and 4 rebounds against the Nuggets. Who says rookies can't contribute?
  5. Kobe Bryant - Sure he was 14-30 shooting against the Pacers on Jan. 22nd, but he missed a three to tie it up with time winding down and the Lakers are now on a three-game losing streak. Without Kobe's 33 points, the Lakers would have been crushed ... but he missed a key shot and we haven't had a Laker on here for what seems like forever. Take that Kobe!

Sounded like you had a good excuse, think you said some family stuff came up? That’s always important! But if folks were just watching at home in the Denver area … shame on them! haha

I don't have cable

And didn’t want to watch on a stream. That’s the only reason I went.

I had to drink myself silly to overcome my social anxiety and prob. made an ass of myself.

Def. ended up being a fun time.

Dimensia is bad news

My grandmother has it. First she forgot all her grandchildren. For I while I was my uncle to her. Then she forgot her husband was dead. Then she forgot her husband. Right now she is living out her teenage years.

You should put Cundiff and Kyle Williams together

Feel bad for both dudes, but I guess the Giant/Pats superbowl rematch was a destiny match. Kinda getting the sense the Pats will win if this is truly the divine intervention that is happening.
Hell to beat Tebow you have to have some kind of divine intervention.
Also to answer #4…GK definitely says rookies can’t contribute otherwise we would have a bench guy who would annoy the crap out of other team’s fans like DeJuan Blair, Carl Landry, or Paul Milsap to name a few. Plus we don’t even know what Hamilton will look like.
Jeez GK, give those guys some burn…please!!!!

Also: right before the kick, it sure looked like that Raven receiver had possession of the ball in the end zone before it was knocked away.

Another reason Melo deserves to be on the stiff list...

If he passes out to.. I think that is Fields, that is a good chance of a Knicks win, but he kept the ball and it slipped out of his hands out of bounds.

saw that twitter post linked to from P&T

Also saw a post from a former Stiff who abandoned ship & started rooting for the Knicks immediately after the trade. He was defending Melo from angry posters there, saying “How’s Melo supposed to pass the ball if nobody’s cutting or anything?” Remember how often that argument used to come up around here? Funny how that problem seems to have followed Melo to NY.

And in the meantime, the Nuggets are at the top of the league in assists-per-game.

Stiff's #6, 7 and 8

Those 19 year olds who coincidentally all sat at the same table yet didn’t cheat in trivia… yeah, I’m sure they all 3 knew Todd Lichti was the Nuggets #1 pick in 1989… despite probably being born roughly 3 years after the fact. Just sayin…

Eh, enjoy the Raptors game behind the Nuggets bench kids! (I’m not really that bitter, life goes on and I had a good time regardless of any possible travischamockeries)

Haven’t felt the magic w/ regard to posting much of late. I was actually talking to Thursty about that on Saturday. He said he has been doing more reading than posting as well. I will get more into it as the season progresses here. Still checkin out the articles you and those other 2 slappies post here though… still devoutly Stiff!

Does it bother anyone else that Nene is still constantly referred to as a Center by the media?

by Russscot on Jan 23, 2012 6:23 PM MST up reply actions   1 recs

Not really

Since he plays more minutes as the biggest guy on the floor for the Nuggets than Denver’s two seven-footers.

Again, I don’t think the media is to blame so much as George Karl.

Is your love worth the nausea it could bring?

by Fly Agaric on Jan 23, 2012 6:26 PM MST up reply actions

I have to agree ... Nene plays the 5 a ton for Denver.

Pretty much the same as Tim Duncan … he is a 4 or a 5? Nene is now a 4/5.

by Nate Timmons on Jan 23, 2012 8:05 PM MST up reply actions

Looks like the GMs are sheeple

Typical predictions, only interesting one I want to point out is they think Karl runs the best offense, even though he has no half court sets and relies on the 2 PG lineup.
I wouldn’t trust this survey as I said the GMs are sheeple and just feeding the media predictions that it wants. Although I do agree Pop is the best coach and if we had him this team is a guaranteed title contender, not an iffy one like it is with Karl.

by JR15 on Jan 23, 2012 5:49 PM MST reply actions

Not quite

Since basketball games are won by teams scoring more than the other team, a player who scores a lot is never a problem or a detriment to his team.

The problem isn’t the points but the way Melo gets those points: through being a volume shooter. Kobe and Melo are not the only ones, the league is full of them: Tyreke Evans, John Wall, Kevin Love, I could go on and on.

It’s the shooting that’s the problem, not the scoring.

Is your love worth the nausea it could bring?

by Fly Agaric on Jan 23, 2012 7:42 PM MST up reply actions

It has been more than a week since Kobe has done that (1/14 vs Clippers was the last one) ...

And this is a weekly list! Last week the Lakers went 1-3 and have lost three in a row. Not very difficult to put up points against the Suns, Jazz, Cavs, and Clippers (Billups on Kobe? Caron Butler? Ha!). Funny how the Lakers faced four tough teams last week: Mavs, Heat, Magic and Pacers and put up a lousy record while Kobe’s shot attempts didn’t take a major dip!!!!!

Bam!

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
