Nuggets at 76ers: Denver & Philly on similar paths (5pm MST)
Denver Nuggets at Philadelphia 76ers, Jan 18, 2012 5:00 PM MST
The man who Dan Issel once proclaimed was, "El Busto" lives! Tony Battie, the former 1997 No. 5 overall Nuggets draft pick, is not only on the Philadelphia 76ers roster, but he's actually playing this year! The 64 year-old -- or rather 35 year-old Battie, has appeared in six games and is averaging 8.7 minutes this season. But "El Busto" is not the only thing that links these franchises ...
The particulars ...
Game: 15
Records:
Denver: 9-5 (3-3 on the road)
Streak: Won 1
Philadelphia: 10-3 (6-0 at home)
Streak: Won 3
Injuries:
Denver: Rudy Fernandez (right Achilles strain) is out. DeMarre Carroll (left hamstring strain) no timetable for return.
Philadelphia: Spencer Hawes (back, Achilles) is a game-time decision. Evan Turner (quad injury) is probable.Television: Altitude 2 TV
Season Series: First match-up.
Opposition's Take: Liberty Ballers
The benefits of writing a later in the day preview? We get to see what our friends over at Liberty Ballers think about this contest in our preview!
Check this out:
"The Nuggets have been dubbed "Sixers West" by many, because of the vast similarities between the teams. Both teams are very good – a notch below the league's elite – but lack a true "superstar". Also, both teams play at a fast-ish pace and use their athleticism, depth and team-oriented offenses to wear down weaker opponents." -Jordan Sams, Liberty Ballers
I don't know about "Sixers West" ... more like, "Nuggets East" if anything. I joke, I joke. I do see the similarities between the teams though:
Point guard: Ty Lawson has finally been handed the full-time reigns in Denver and he isn't disappointing. For Philly, Jrue Holiday is playing in this third NBA season and has started 146 out of 168 of his possible games. Holiday averaged 15 points per game and 4.4 assists per game. This season he has upped his perimeter shooting by taking 3.5 threes per game over his average last year of 2.7 attempts per game. He's lightning quick, like Lawson, and plays pretty similar by cutting through traffic as well as using the lack defenders give him to burn teams from the outside. Advantage: Even.
Shooting guard: Arron Afflalo has been slumping and pressing to get his game back on track. His effort is still top notch, but the results may vary. Jodie Meeks is an NBA player success story. He has worked his way into the starting lineup after being a second round pick by the Milwaukee Bucks. Meeks set the all-time scoring mark at Kentucky with 54 points, breaking Dan Issel's record and can really fill it up when his shot is falling. It will be up to Afflalo not to give Meeks the space he needs to fire off shots, but Denver hasn't been great in preventing open looks for shooters. But Meeks is only averaging 8.8 ppg and Afflalo has been waiting to break-out. Advantage: Nuggets.
Small forward: Danilo Gallinari has been on fire recently, shooting 11-25 (44%) from downtown over the last five games. Gallo has been bothered by a bum wheel, but he's still attacking the hoop, drawing fouls, finding teammates (3.2 assists over last five games), playing good defense (right LeBron?), and hitting his jumpers. Andre Iguodala has survived trade rumors over the last few seasons and is now the veteran presence (just 27 years old) on this Sixers youthful squad. Iggy has been on a tear of his own, scoring over 23 and 21 points over the his last two games, but he'll face a bigger defender tonight in Gallo, at times. And Gallo will be facing one of the best defenders in the game. This will be a great chess match. Advantage: Even.
Power forward: Nene is averaging 16.3 ppg and 9 rebounds over his last three contests. Denver must get similar numbers out of him tonight and he'll be a handful for whomever and however the Sixers try to handle him. Elton Brand is only averaging 26.8 minutes per game and isn't the factor he once was on the offensive end. His season scoring-high is 21 points, but he averages only 9.8 ppg. Nene's defense and offense are clicking right now, but Denver better not sleep on Brand. Advantage: Nuggets.
Center: Timofey Mozgov is starting to feel more comfortable in his starting role in Denver. His offense is starting to click as his teammates are looking for him a little more and he's not afraid to let it rip. Moz's minutes are still pretty inconsistent, as is his substitution patterns. If Spencer Hawes can't go tonight, the Sixers could be in depth trouble. Lacking in big men since their trade of Marreese Speights (who is averaging 11.6 points and 6.4 rebounds over his last five games for the Grizzlies and was on the Nuggets radar), the Sixers might be forced to start Tony Battie. If Hawes plays, he usually looks good against Denver as he likes to run the floor and for some reason seems to kill the Nuggets. Advantage: Even.
Bench: With Rudy Fernandez likely out again tonight, the Nuggets will likely use Andre Miller, Al Harrington, Corey Brewer, and Chris Andersen in some fashion. This game will lend itself to small ball and I hope the Nuggets have the energy to stay with the Sixers if it turns into a running affair. Don't get your hopes up for Kosta Koufos or Kenneth Faried. In the off-season I suggested the Nuggets throw money at Thaddeus Young, who is a match-up nightmare, but he's averaging just 11.6 ppg and 4.6 rebounds a night. The lethal lefty can come out like he did against the Wizards and get 18 points and then he can have nights like he did Jan. 16th against the Bucks where he gets your squad just 2 points in 27 minutes. The off-nights have been rare this season for Young, but the monster game hasn't shown up yet either. Let's hope the Nuggets keep a close eye on the athletic kid tonight. In addition to Young the Sixers bring Evan Turner (if he can play tonight) and Lou Williams in off the bench.
Turner isn't very flashy, like Williams can be, but he is talented and could go off at even given time. I think as Nuggets fans, we may fear the big game from unexpected places. Denver's bench has been key, but the Sixers bench is just as important ... Advantage: Even.
This should be a good one tonight. It's an early 5 p.m. start here in Colorado ... let's hope the Nuggets have the legs to get a tough win tonight in Philly.

AAA
GK needs to tell him “KNOW UR ROLE!” play D and stand in the damn corner and knock down 3s.
he also plays below the rim, so he could learn a lot from Dre. its not all about goin full blast to the basket. use ur body to protect ur shots. Ty does a good job of shield defenders in the lane too.
and sorry to say, he cuts waaaaay more grass than JR. he does all this between the legs, side to side dribbles and basically stays in the same place. or worst, gets closer to a teammate and messes up all the floor spacing. and then he basically just hands the ball off to whoever he is next to.
still, im a fan of AAA. just tryin too hard.
let's go nuggets! who u wit?
firegeorgekarl.com
Pretty good assessment of his play this season. I don’t like the “below the rim” play, especially when he just does it to be old school or whatever. He has the ability to throw it down http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xo-xx_0aJBM … lunging to the rim, instead of towering over it has made his shots very easy to block and the non-dunking is actually hurting his game. Use your explosiveness AAA!

UNREAL!
That’s the first time I’ve ever seen AAA throw it down. Makes me think he’s had at least half a dozen blocked layups that could have been and1s if he threw it down like that!
He dunked in some Nuggets preseason games I saw when he first got here … or in the practice video featured on NBA TV … can’t remember, but I do remember being impressed with his powerful dunks in some drill I saw…

even in his layups
you can see he’s got enough height to dunk it if he wants, but he just doesn’t. don’t know why. maybe he’s got a fear of getting his finger tied up in the net and ripping it off (you never heard that growing up?).
I NEVER HEARD THAT ...
Don’t think I ever got my finger jammed in the net … I played above the rim all the time! Was the hoop lowered? Perhaps…

I did that a couple summers ago when I had a hoop at my house. Doesn’t it make you feel super cool throwing down dunks on an 8 ft. rim? It does for me :)
man i used to love throwing down on 8ft rims (im short)
but im so out of shape not, id probably tear a knee and pull an oblique just trying to dunk on the 8ft rim.
let's go nuggets! who u wit?
firegeorgekarl.com
We played on 8-ft rims a lot at my buddy Brett's house.
It was awesome. Rejecting dunks was as fun as dunking yourself. I still recall throwing one down in Brett’s face, he was a big center, and staring him down. Haha, middle school memories! I also remember hyper-extending my elbow wrestling for a rebound and that bad boy has never been the same. Old Man Worries.
I couldn’t dunk a real ball on a legit hoop. But I could throw down Gator-skin dodgeballs like nobody’s business. Now, I can barely skim the rim. I know all about being out of shape!

Really looking forward to the game tonight
Gonna be a lot of fun seeing who can outrun who.
Also: that’s good news that Rudy might be back Friday. But it’s the Wizards. He should rest a day so he can come in fresh and torch Melo and the Knicks on Saturday.

is it worth giving him some burn on Fri to work out the rust before Sat?
thank god we're out of Milwaukee
where every single game I’ve ever watched from there bored the beJesus out of me.
6ers vs Nugs reminds me of a pair of twin brothers playing one on one
With both teams likely to play small and fast
I say Denver 119, Philly 105.
Could go either way, but I feel like being a homer today and like Denver’s defense just a bit better.
Is your love worth the nausea it could bring?
I don't want to totally discount Philly's 10-3 record, but ...
they haven’t really beaten a lot of good teams. They have taken out who they should, sans for a nice Pacers win, and lost to all the playoff caliber teams they have faced (sans Pacers) in the Blazers, Jazz (surprising team), and Knicks.
Not saying Denver is should win based off of this, just something that should be considered. Sixers schedule here.

i agree completely
also think this is partly the reason the jazz have such a good record as well. outside of the stinker of a game a few days ago in denver, the only good team they beat was the 76ers at home by 3 and a chris paul-less clippers team. while both have been surprising and will be playoff teams, i have to think they will regress a bit towards the mean
isn't their strength of schedule something terrible like .375?
not really sure they’re as good as the 10-3 record would indicate
loss against portland, utah, and the knicks (all on the road)
wins against phoenix,GS, NO, detroit, toronto, indiana, sac, wizards twice and the bucks. not exactly the strongest schedule. however, they have consistently blown these teams out, something that the nuggets have failed to do against weaker opponents. possibly more mentally into every game because they might be playing for PT, while on the nuggets, the rotations can only be changed from an act of god
I hate to say it
But I sense us mailing in a stinker. We’re on the back half of a road B2B with an early start. Are we gonna have the legs to put up 120?

But – not to thursty you here – it’s “should have,” not “should of.” My biggest pet peeve. I think it comes from the contraction “should’ve” sounding like “should of.”

as of now, advantage denver
been reading here as a fan from nj for a while now, just made an account and this is my first post!
anyway, on paper it looks like denver should have somewhat of an edge over the 76ers, but i wouldn’t be surprised if GK lets andre miller hold the ball for way too long and he forces bad shots/turns the ball over. I feel he’s been doing that since the season started, and GK needs to limit ‘dres minutes tonight. A win on the road here at a team that hasn’t been beat at home yet could be a huge boost to the team’s confidence, get them to finish this five game road trip strong.

been considering going to the game in ny!
i went to last year’s game before the melo trade where the knicks didn’t miss a free throw for almost the whole game, and denver just barely wasn’t able to catch up. and then went to the game where they lost (got blown out) to the nets in the same week >_<
that’d be sweet if i could fly out to denver haha, hopefully sometime soon i can!
and i totally forgot about andre’s time in philly…although his drive to want to play well may make him demand the ball more and have some bad turnovers. i’m just going to hope it doesn’t happen, and that he shows up big time tonight!
Bombs Away..
Don’t think anyone knows what could happen tonight. Lots of scenarios.
1. Nuggets have dead legs and get run in the 1st Q. And it is a catch up game.
2. Philly is cocky and sluggish get run in the 1st Q. And it is a hold’em off game.
3. It is a well executed shoot out..
4. It is a sloppy turn over grind. Where one good burst wins it.
Who knows. Hawes and Young play good against the Nuggets. Hope Nene doesn’t let Brands old man tricks get to him.
AAA is due to break out.. Hope Corey keeps the corner 3 rolling. OK enough rambling fro me. Enjoy the game.

bold predictions for tonight:
AAA and Gallo BOTH score in the mid 20s
Big Al goes perfect from 3
Ty dishes out no less than 10 assists
Brewer continues his hot streak
Faried ACTUALLY gets playing time
speaking of Faried
Blazer fans are keeping a close watch on Faried and his development, you know how Blazer’s are with their “what if’s”… story of their franchise. They swapped the pick with the Nuggets to get Felton otherwise they would of drafted Faried before us.

I wish nuggets fans could keep watch on his development
He’s not had even a whole game’s minutes to be seen!
Sounds like he'd be sitting on the bench there too
McMillan is getting grief for not playing their young guys too
This actually isn't true ... the Blazers drafted Nolan Smith one spot ahead of Faried.
The draft pick came from Dallas to get Hamilton.

But why would they had drafted a guard?
All the Blazer fans were angry because they were logjammed at that position. I theorize that the “Trade” was put into place to where the Nuggets said they would trade a young near all-star guard in Raymond Felton for a old point guard in Andre Miller in exchange for unofficially claiming Faried’s rights.
Just a theory though.

Philly fan here
2. Philly is cocky and sluggish get run in the 1st Q. And it is a hold’em off game.
Do not be surprised if the Nuggets do lead after the 1st Q. Not because Philly is cocky though, they are far from that. The Sixers seem to start slow and then catch up by halftime. The 3rd Q is where they seem to do most of their damage.
Some guy at PSU Hershey Med Center just discovered a virus that eats cancer. Where were the CNN trucks for that? THON will probably break $10 mil this year. Put that on "Outside the Lines".
2nd quarter has been our strength
I’m expecting a solid Nuggets lead at halftime but the game eventually coming down to the 4th quarter. Here’s to a good game either way!

This is going to be a tough game
We will have to win with Defense. Look for Brewer to get alot if minutes. Brew and Aaa active on the perimeter D. Ty will go for steals. Bird will play more if he is helping on D.

I <3 evil GK
I like his short rotations lately. I’m giving him slack on the rotation thing until All-star break. Since he’s been here the rotations had been dead set, a player change here or there(Jones -AAA, LK-Big Al) Now he has 70% different team. Finding a good setup is going to take time. I do agree with Andrew that this team is in need of someone that can light it up from outside.

ten before tip
Nuggets center Timofey Mozgov won’t start because of a back strain. Coach George Karl said it’s a 2-3 day injury. Kosta Koufos will start for Mozgov. Guard Rudy Fernandez will miss his second straight game due to a right Achilles strain. Forward DeMarre Carroll also won’t play because of a left hamstring injury.
Rookie Nikola Vucevic will make his first start for the 76ers. Vucevic will replace center Spencer Hawes, who has a left Achilles strain. "This is going to be a racehorse game. I don’t think he’ll be able to do it," Sixers coach Doug Collins said of Hawes. "We have to get him healthy." Vucevic is averaging 4.5 points and 13.4 minutes.
The Sixers will have guard/forward Evan Turner. He missed Monday’s win because of a right quad contusion.
Sixers swingman Andre Iguodala has Karl’s vote for the 2012 U.S. Olympic team. Iguodala was named one of 20 finalists for the team on Monday. "I would almost bet he makes it because he’s a guy who can fill many roles and he’s a defensive stopper."
The Sixers have the league’s second-best scoring defense, allowing just 86.2 points per game. Meanwhile, the Nuggets have the second-highest scoring offense, averaging 104.1 points per game.
Karl was encouraged by his team’s performance in a 105-95 victory at Milwaukee on Tuesday night. "We found some things that we hadn’t had on a consistent basis that we hope to have tonight," he said.

Need a power 2nd Q and adjustments in transition D
Can’t let the Sixers just take all these jumpers without working for ’em…
ok they're not up by more than 10 so we're still within striking distance if we can lock in and play smart D without fouling.

the 6ers don’t have anyone that should scare the Nugs away from taking it inside every possession
while the 76ers commentators are not bad
they do put me to sleep with their monotone boringness. They aren’t biased or annoying like the Spur assholes who are their commentators.

What I like so far
Dre is ballin’…obviously being in Philly has something to do with it.
Nene is great passing
Ty is kinda meh…been an iffy stretch for him
Gallo has two points, but has played some good D on Iggy
Overall a very nice run for the nuggets in the quarter.

gotta be frank
I was perfectly agreeable to a loss here, esp after the 1st quarter but what a great win it would be. Cross your fingers.
Harrington on pace for 14 points and 8 rebounds
he looks good. :)
