Andre Miller unhappy with role on Nuggets; Gallo wants to stay
In a two pronged articles on Fox Sports Florida, Denver Stiffs' friend and former Nuggets beat writer Chris Tomasson talks to Andre Miller about his unhappiness with his role off the bench. He also speaks to Gallo who says he wants to stay in Denver. Good reading and nice heads up from nugzin2040.

That sucks but it's fine
I don’t see the Nuggets resigning him anyway for the type of money he is getting paid and using that to target free agents. When we signed Stone, I figured Andre was a one and done.

At least he promised to be professional about it.
If he can start somewhere else next year, then by all means, I hope he gets that.

Sweet
I mean I love Dre and all but he deserves to start and could start for several teams. If he wants to leave, so be it. Not only can Rudy Fernandez run the point but Julyan Stone looks like he could end up being a very servicable back up and being 6’7 I wouldn’t mind GK’s dbl pg set as much. I am so so sooooooooooooo very glad Gallo wants to stay. I’m not sure what he meant by following AAA and saying he wants what AAA got as far as money wise or staying in a system he likes but hey if we can get Gallo back for 4 or 5 years at 8 Mil per I would be THRILLED. I was expecting him to cost a bit more than that but if we can keep him for 8 MIl per then that means Ty will get somewhere in the 12 mil range and the Nuggets core of Ty, Gallo, Nene and AAA will be locked up for years and we won’t have to worry about a rebuild in Denver anytime soon. I see this as fantastic news.

I think Gallo wants to be locked in and make his money
If we can keep him for under 10 millions a season, it’d be a steal.
Make it so, Ujiri.

I think the target for Gallo will be 8 to 10 mil a year
Nuggets will probably offer him in that ballpark. I can see the amnesty being used on Bird to free up some more money. If Gallo keeps improving this year, that price tag will go up.

in all honesty
I know Gallo likes playing with Ty. I am pretty sure he has gone public with it and said “he finds a way to get me the ball and i like playing with him” or something like that. If Massai sat him down and said hey Gallo sign here for 9 mil per, don’t demand a max so we can also keep Ty at just about the same rate, he would do it… even over taking a few more mil for another club and have to start a new system over again. Gallo may actually be that breath of fresh air the Nuggets have never really seemed to get besides Nene of course. I am excited to see how it all plays out.

I really depends on who the Nuggets retain on the roster
the cap is staying at 58 million next season. I can see the Nuggets floating over the cap just a bit to keep the “core”. The cap will go up again in 2013 (I would project it to be somewhere around 62 million) and that will give the Nugz more flexibility. Harrington may STILL be amnestied instead of Bird…but with the way Al is playing this year I don’t know.

Amnestying Bird, not resigning Miller, and Fernandez most likely going back to Spain will give the Nuggets back 14 million.

he's just being honest and is a grown man
Just like we understood why Chauncey was upset being traded, etc., Andre has been treated like a pawn most of his career and would like to wanted for playing skills not just a mentor or tradeable asset. He won’t cause trouble, and I hope the Nuggets do him right by letting him become a FA or trading him to a favorable situation of his choice.

As long as he won't pout about it
I don’t care really, but he should know that Lawson is the man in Denver and is a better player than Miller at this point. If Miller wants to be a starting point guard for a team fighting for an 8th-6th seed in the playoffs like he has only been doing, then he can after this year is up. I didn’t think he would come back next year, but I don’t think he is trade worthy because of his contract.

this is really the thing
Lawson is just plain better than Miller. Lawson’s also better than Felton. Ergo, Lawson should be the starter and nobody should really try to dispute that.

About Andre
I was looking at all the teams in the league and I don’t know for what team he could start next season and have a shot at making the playoffs. I would say the Lakers and maybe the Heat (although he is not suited at all for their fast game). There are so many good point guards in the league and most of them are young and need game-time to further develop. Here are some teams that Masai could think of trading him to during this season:
Boston – has Rondo, he would be a very good back-up there as well, but not a starter and probably not as many minutes as with the Nuggets
Dallas – Back up to J-Kidd, they are clearing cap space for summer of 2012, good fit with their old style of play and good ball movement
Lakers – should start over Derek Fisher, probably the best fit for him right now with Mike Brown’s slow offense
Knicks – not a clear starter there, although they have Baron Davis, but a good fit with the lobs he could throw to Chandler, STAT and Melo.
OKC – E. Maynor out for the season, without a solid back-up for Westbrook
San Antonio – Would be backing up Tony Parker, last real chance for them to get to the finals, will be all-in this season
Orlando – anything to keep Dwight happy, also non-risky move because Miller’s contract is up after the season.
Atlanta – Jeff Teague currently starting there, could return to back up if Miller arrives.
I think these are the teams that would trade for Miller during this season, excepting the case in which a non-contending team wants a salary dump. I would do any trade involving a back-up point guard who knows his role (Eric Maynor is the best example) + a 1st/2nd round pick, otherwise at the end of the season the Nuggets won’t get anything back for him.
Best thing about this potential trade would be that we won’t see the Ty-Dre duo in crunch time come playoff time.
A team's only got 5 starters
so there will always be tension in that area. I think Karl likes that because it keeps people competitive.
I don’t think Dre will rock the boat, he’s a real pro, but if he’s more interested in winning than starting, Denver might be his best choice. Next season, will a contender ask him to start at age 36?
Popex has got some possible destinations, but Dre wants to start so he wouldn’t be happier in OKC, Dallas, SA or Boston anyway. Maybe Lakers or Hawks.
He’s playing great for us, and I don’t see Rudy as a true PG, so if we trade Dre we need to get a healthy backup in exchange. Otherwise our best bet may be to play him now and let him walk.
The thing I have with Miller
is that he’s taking away minutes/responsibilities away from Ty while not helping us win big time. We won’t be winning anything this year (by anything I mean a championship), Ty’s had his 2 year mentoring with Chauncey, so I say let him run this team full-time and stop hindering his development.
I think Ty can play 35 minutes a night and J. Stone could be his back-up for 12-15 minutes (2 stints of about 5-6 minutes). Furthermore, if we deal Miller before the deadline, we can get another back-up point guard + a potential pick or something.
Why aren't we winning a ship this year?
You never know what can happen. Injuries etc. We’re playing ok and might get really good having Will come back from China. Certainly I’m inclined to agree with you to some extent, but a small part of me reserves thoughts of greatness until we’re ultimately eliminated.
by InboundingLobPass on Jan 12, 2012 4:31 AM MST via mobile up reply actions
According to reports
Will has been in constant contact with Masai about resigning. I think that is good news but wonder where he will fit into the rotation.
Does this push Moz to the bench, with the Nugs running Nene, Gallo, Will, AAA and Ty?
Hooray for the "can't hold our own" mini lineup!

fat chance
the knicks fans at least love him and he’s about their only solid young guy, espeically with their weak back court. i would think about trying to include him and bird in something for a big/pick
Knicks would wait
Until the off-season and try to sign them with their MLE. Have no bigs to offer that we would want and the earliest pick they can give up is in 2018 I think.
Hamilton sucks?
We have never seen him play. You don’t know that. j ham was an excellent college player. He will have a role on the nuggets soon enough. We don’t have the cash to give all of our depth raises
In a normal world
we don’t have a chance to win the ship this year as this roster is presently constructed. Maybe in the west we have a small chance (I think the bad match-ups for us are the Lakers and the Spurs – the Lakers because George will play small ball against them, which could work for a game or 2, but not a 7 game series and SAS because, how to put it gently, Pop will always have George’s number, no matter how old will they be). I think we match-up up pretty good against OKC, contrary to what others think (now we have an extra guy to throw at Durant – C. Brewer, so I think that if everyone is healthy we could take them down). The thing is, whoever between Chicago and Miami wins the East, we don’t stand a chance in a 7-game series, especially against Chicago. They are very well coached, have the size advantage and their defense is top-notch. So overall, the chances of Denver winning this year, IMHO, are almost non-existent.
The Nuggets have some problems
But: even though I am all Debbie Downer on Denver right now because of that terrible, uninspired game against the Hornets, I still think Denver can match up with anybody in the west for a 7-game series.
The Lakers still lack a decent backcourt to deal with the explosiveness of Ty and the Spurs have coaching but I still give Denver the edge based on youth.
You are right, though. Chicago and Miami est no beuno para Los Nuggets.

Man, the Finals?
I hope all of you who are talking about the Nuggets having any kind of chance to make the Finals this year are right, and that I’m wrong, and that I will spend the summer happily eating my words.
Before I consider it at all possible for the Nuggets to make the Finals, I need to see three things:
1. Consistent effort on defense, including proper rotations to cut down on all those wide-open 3’s for opponents — the Nuggets should be winning plenty of games with their defense, not by scoring 123 points;
2. The ability to generate good shots in the half court offense, whether facing a zone defense or any other kind of defense;
3. Winning more road games than they lose.
As I see it, that’s the blueprint for playoff success, and as much talent as this roster has, and as fun as they can be to watch, they don’t seem to be following that blueprint.

Second that agreement . . .
But a long season (even a short 66 games is a long season – I only get 8 games with my 8-9 year old to teach them anything in the Y league), and those elements could develop by the playoffs. The model would be Memphis last year.
Finish the year with Dre, sign Chauncey over the summer.

Without time to read the article
I just want to say this makes me sad. I think Miller is the perfect fit for a back-up PG since, in any George Karl system, he’s still going to get starter minutes playing alongside Ty.
I get how starting is an ego boost and and this and that, but I thought Andre was way more mature than that. Bitching about minutes I can understand. But Miller is going to get plenty of burn.
Man, I hope Stone matures in time for next season.
"Rollin' in the club / HAPPY MEAL"
I saw another article about this same story...
And I want to comment here, instead of there, that Andre ≠ Felton. Just because they were both unhappy about playing off the bench doesn’t make them the same. Andre is a better passer and all-around team mate and is a good bit smarter about his shots.
Andre > Felton. Just too bad they both don’t like backing up soon-to-be All Star Ty.

Tomasson sensationalizes...
Don’t know if that is a word.. but you get the point. Read this guy’s stuff.. especially since the Rocky Mountain News went out of business and he always sends out headline grabbing quotes.
I mean Andre kinda not satisfied with not starting. Uh.. what is he supposed to say? I love coming off the bench? I don’t think there are any issues there at all.
And Gallo might just be playing nice. See what happens when it comes to contract time. If Gallo keeps improving he will play his way to a big payday with Denver or whoever.
These quotes are from Miller directly so there's not much to sensationalize
As for Gallo…I think his price WILL go up…but I think his desire to stay in Denver is real.

The quotes may be accurate.. BUT..
Tomasson emphasizes them out of context. I’ve seen him do it before. He badgers guys and once they say something he can run with.. BOOM there it is..
Marc Spears at Yahoo does the same thing. I am not saying it isn’t true. But just isn’t a surprise. I know we all want to believe the Nuggets are a happy team, but no one on the team gets the minutes they want. That is price you pay for a “deep, balanced” team.
I think the Nuggets are a happy team for the most part
the Dre thing was always going to be temporary. We all knew it (just like Felton). So Miller’s quotes aren’t surprising at all.
I’m more focused on the Gallo thing. I’ve been following Gallo on twitter and he has warmed up to Denver big time. He seems to enjoy the team…calls several teammates “brother” and if he wasn’t comfortable he wouldn’t be playing as well as he has. Good for him. I expect the Nuggets to offer him a substantial contract between 8 and 10 million per…probably closer to 10.

And I hope he’s found a few places that make him feel at home. The only good Italian place I can think of is Gaetano’s. But Gallo going going there on a recommendation for ‘Italian’ food would probably play out as the reverse of the Soprano’s going to Italy, not recognizing the food.

Gallo is happy to stay here
I think that in Denver he’s found the following major things:
1. The best environment for his skills.
2. A coach who believes in him and is willing to give him almost his home keys (in terms of a team).
3. An enthusiastic environment hungry for victories.
4. Young and unselfish teammates as he is (thanks God, Felton has gone).
5. The opportunity to demonstrate that New York Knicks had seen him in the wrong way, not using him in the appropriate manner to bring out his full potential (in Italy, in his early years, Gallo has always been an all-round player, never been merely as a shooter from behind the arc).
6. The ability to give a dream to himself and to Denver (he is a winner and will eventually be able to prove it).
by ReverendoJazz on Jan 12, 2012 12:30 PM MST up reply actions
3 things
1. Love Dre but this?
Miller didn’t believe there would have been a battle for the starting job with Lawson had a lockout not significantly shortened training camp. But Miller said he plans to have a good attitude and will “support” Lawson during the 66-game season.
Does that mean he thinks in his out of shape condition he would have beat Lawson for the starting job in camp? Or am I reading what I want to read…?
2. Ty is our starting PG, so let’s make sure Julyan Stone gets some minutes this season to possibly transition into a backup role next year. He has good handles and his height and length are a good counter to Ty’s at the PG position. I think I’m being overly hopeful that he’d be ready to backup by next year, but I’m putting it out there.
3. Lockup Gallo as soon as you can. Pretty strong words to just be diplomatic on his part, IMHO.

My interpretation...
I read it in this “interview” context:
Tomasson was asking if Dre thought he would have beat Lawson out for the starting job if there was a full training camp together. Dre says no there wouldn’t have been a battle for the starting job. He seems quite aware of the fact that Ty is the Nuggets guy.
He doesn’t really disagree with that or think they are wrong for thinking that just he wants to start somewhere and Denver isn’t going to be where it happens.
'"It could happen..."
Dre, you sir are totally missing the point
Put aside your ego and your negativity. You are getting enough minutes. You are playing in crunchtine you are a respected leader.
Ty Lawson is one of the best young point guards in the league and you, Andre, have the opportunity to help him get better. It’s about the Team and Winning, it’s not about, Is Dre starting. Just give 100% to help the team win, be a leader and do everything you can to help Ty Lawson get better. Isn’t this obvious?
by Nuggburg on Jan 12, 2012 10:50 AM MST via mobile reply actions
Agreed
I think really this is where Dre is at.
He reminds me of the crafty old guy in the Rec league. He just knows how to play.
He isn’t faster than everyone else, he doesn’t even shoot better than everyone else. He’ll take you down low and use McHale like moves to score. He’ll make the pass for an easy lay-up because you are too busy celebrating your nasty cross-over or whatever flashy move you just made.
He knows the game. His team seems to just win and he helps them. He doesn’t win games but he helps a team win games.
I’m glad he is here. I think he will be productive and help the Nuggets make a good run deep into the playoffs and come June when we finish playing he will have to decide if this is the place for him to be or not. I don’t think the Nuggets have big enough holes that they NEED to try to ship him out and getting something in return. Play it out and come summertime see if he fits here or if he should move on.
'"It could happen..."
I never understood the
“I’m unhappy because I’m not starting line” kind of ridiculous when the guy is getting the same amount of mins as ty and actually is playing towards the ends of game most of time. However, its fine since I didn’t see us keeping Miller next year anyways. Really happy with the thing with Gallo. Gotta keep him and Ty and we got ourselves a pretty good core moving forward

As I always say, Karl is a player's coach
He must believe that his approach will finally pay off with the right bunch. Of course, some other coaches get much more consistent results with a rigorous system and disciplined execution. In order to create and perpetuate that culture, those coaches must have the full support of their front offices. Or maybe those front offices have moved to create that culture with their coaching hires in the first place.
I vote for option 2, but I’m just a fan. I still wonder what Masai Ujiri and Josh Kroenke think about it.

They'd just drone on about supporting their coach
or whatever they need to say to be diplomatic. What we really need is someone to read their minds. Yeah, that seems pretty unlikely.

What we really need is a new coach and a new culture
What I wonder is if the FO thinks so, too. Sure, they re-signed Karl not that long ago, but they’re basketball fans/minds, and they’re not blind.
I’m hoping for the best with this team—this year and in the relative short term—but George Karl doesn’t inspire confidence in the getting-the-most department.

I just spoke to Chris via email
he is guessing because Arn Tellem is his agent that Gallo would ask for Nene money. That’s it. Just a gut feeling on his part based on who Gallo’s agent is.
And quite frankly, if the Nuggets want Gallo to be their feature scorer and lynchpin they will have to pony up more than Afflalo money.

With his youth and upside
Yeah I could see that. But like All NBA players he will get what a someone, probably the Nuggets, are willing to pay him. And he earns it. Like most Nuggets, except Faried and Kouf, I’d like to see Gallo work harder for rebounds. But the kid is at the very beginning of his prime and probable worth the $$$.

Nuggets marketing dept needs to showcase Ty and Gallo
Plus create more buzz locally, get Tebow courtside season tix or something ;) That’ll get more Nat’l pub, heck ESPN worked Tebow references in showing Nuggets highlights from last night, and Rocky is hitting halfcourt shots wearing his jersey. No harm in piggybacking Tebow attention for the Nuggets and get Ty and Gallo some more endorsements in the process.

i think its more that Dre doesnt want to get screwed again
Not sure what the Nuggets really gained in retrospect when we traded Dre the first time, except eventually getting Chauncey for 2 1/2 seasons. Portland did him wrong by starting Steve Blake ahead of him at times. He is being honest when asked about if he’s happy or not, not about the Nugs personally, but the situations he ends up in.

Bird is on the downside and is following the law of diminishing returns. He will have a handful of games like last night, but basically is who he is at this stage of career.

Miller has a nice expiring contract
Move him at trade deadline for an asset. Then move Rudy to back up pg. He is more than capable to be our backup pg. That opens up wing minutes for ail on Chandler
That article I cited somewhere above
also mentions Karl using Rudy as a PG at times, which was encouraging.

Thanks for the heads up Jeff!
It’s good to hear that Gallo wants to play here. I’d be okay moving Andre, if we got a big in return. Like TyLawesome said, Rudy could play at PG as well. I actually think that is his better position. And Stone can play some spot minutes there as well, but definitely needs to get better offensively.
PG Ty/Rudy/Stone
SG AAA/Brewer
SF Gallo/Chandler/Brewer
PF Nene/Harrington/Chandler
C Koufos or Mozgov/Random Big/Scott Hastings/Tony Battie/Birdman
Forgot Faried
Karl probably has the same problem.
Eventually, it’ll be: PF Nene/Faried hopefully.
I was shocked to see Stone get minutes last night
I was also shocked when he hada wide open lay-up in the lane, and still looked to pass.
Seriously
GK loves him some PGs.
Anyone have a GIF of Faried or K2 on the sidleines with a WTF look as Stone checks in?
Much ado about nothing re Miller.
Not surprised that he feels this way. And as long as he keeps showing up to play, no harm no foul.
Whether Gallo is being genuine about wanting to stay with the Nuggets remains to be seen. Nice to hear, but he’s just being smart about how to position himself.

Just thought of somethig re Miller
He is a FA looking for one last pay day. Wants starter’s money. I can see why he is lobbying now.
If I recall correctly
He started last night. He looked capable, especially passing the ball. But he’s not too serious of a threat on offense. He can kind of disappear some times.
"Rollin' in the club / HAPPY MEAL"
Really though,
Has Dre ever been part of a team that was a championship contender? Maybe says something about him as a starting PG. I think he’s a solid player, but if it’s really his pride on the line he’ll likely have to put aside any dreams he has of chasing a ring if he wants to start.
Good to have some honesty though, props to that.

Honest, yes
But he should have talked to Karl or Masai before going to the media about it. He is getting more minutes than almost anybody on the team, so I don’t see what the problem is.

Like the article said
Andre’s getting the fewest minutes since he was a rookie. So minutes are probably a part of the problem. Unfortunately, GK’s solution is probably to give him more minutes at PG, which just further stunts the development of Ty.
I appreciate Andre's honesty
but am dissappointed at lack of respect for the Nuggets fans. His best years have been spent here and he’s had great fan support. He’d show some class by expressing some more committment to being here and trying to achieve something. Worry about next year later.

Not Sure Why Dre Went Public
Is he forcing a mid-season trade? Dre seems like such a pro, and rarely speaks to the media. How do these statements help Dre or the team? He should be mad at Portand not Denver.
by ACEIII on Jan 12, 2012 7:13 PM MST via mobile reply actions
I'm not sure why he is upset though
because he is playing 29 minutes a game, that is only 3 less minutes a game than last year with Portland, and lowering your minutes a game in your veteran years gives you about an extra season you normally wouldn’t of had.
Also, his assists per 40 is higher than it was last year.

Moz has upside...Gortat is a huge stiff
Hell Mozzy outplayed Gortat when they played against each other and is way younger.
Also, outside of Harrington I am pretty sure every player doesn’t like coming off the bench. All these players are good, this is kinda expected. I am not worried about it.
Miller can say what he wants, but he still comes to play and that’s all that matters. He is not in our future plans, and he will play well this season, so it is kinda a moot point.

Btw about Moz
M. Gasol, and Andrew Bynum struggled mightily their first few years.
It takes a while for big men to develop especially one from another country who can’t speak English.
The eye test shows he has the talent unlike Kwame Brown or Semeh Erden, he is just lost and once it clicks he will be great. It does require patience and Ujiri/ Nugz coaching staff seem like a patient bunch.

He boxes out
Awkward is his problem, and as I mentioned, it is an adjustment thing.
Remember when Yao was first in the league. Man he was extremely awkward. The team relied heavily on him and Steve Francis so he had a faster learning curve than Moz (not saying Moz will be Yao), but being awkward is what 7 footers do. You can’t teach size.
I will say it again, a ton of people thought M Gasol was a bust, you have to be patient with big men.

Exactly, a true pro is not Andre. If you go back to my post in the intersquad scrimmage I talk about how shitty Dre acted towards the crowd and how he looked slow etc and everyone said oh wait hes a pro and he will do fine…
His game has been fine but a ‘true pro’ as you guys say doesn’t tell a reporter this stuff, he tells a coach or gm as nugznazty said.

I was suprised when I first read he was unhappy but then...
I realized he was starting to lose minutes to Fernandez in the last couple of games before Ty got hurt.
His opinion was probably different in the first week when he was still getting starter type minute and finishing the game on the floor.
"Before I speak, I have something important to say."

believe me
I want dre to stay— he’s REALLY important to this team. I just don’t like players sticking around when they don’t want to. You’re old ‘dre- old point guards don’t start on young teams. He should be happy with the amount of minutes he’s getting.
Well Jason Kidd does start
When Beaubois should be getting his minutes. But Dre gets a lot of minutes and as George says starting doesn’t mean anything. It’s who finishes that matters to him. And Dre does finish.
