J.R. Smith headed to China?

Yahoo Sports! Adrian Wojnarowski reports that J.R. Smith could be following in Wilson Chandler's footsteps and be heading to China. According to Wojnarowski, Smith is close to completing a deal that will earn him over $3 million next season with Shanxi, the largest contract in the Chinese Basketball Association to date.

Star-divide

Just a reminder, should Smith sign with a CBA team he would forfeit his free agency for this season and would not have an opt-out clause to return if and when the NBA lockout ends, per CBA's recent ruling.  This would be another blow to the Nuggets as I'm sure fans were hoping that with Chandler's departure, Smith would be re-signed.  On the other hand, for those Nugget fans who are tired of Smith's antics, him signing with Shanxi might be a blessing in disguise as both sides would likely part ways.  In any case, if this deal goes through, it will add to the Nuggets thinning roster.

if both JR & Chandler are in China

We’d better hope Hamilton & Faried have explosive rookie seasons (if there is a season)

Forbes will get more PT.

Chu Chu will undoubtedly get some minutes too right?

Agreed that Hamilton and Faried better be ready

There's a strange use of homonym

Usually when people screw up the words ‘there’, ‘their’ and ’they’re’ they just use ‘there’ for everything, but you’ve pulled a rarity: ’they’re’ where it should have been ‘their’. (they are skill sets?).

I dread the prospect of a Dre/Ty backcourt but you know it will happen sometime.

They should have given JR's minutes to Forbes last year

I’d much rather watch a team player with a reduced skill set play hard, than watch a highly skilled player who may or may not show up, pout, or dribble a ball off his foot at a critical moment.

My immediate neighbors chose game nights to go to the movies or dinner. That way they avoid listening to me scream, swear, and throw things at the TV. Luckily, I throw sofa pillows or JR would owe me 30+ TVs a season.

JR amd Chandler were bad in the playoffs...BUT

The Nuggets are greatly weakened by losing these guys, because those two guys bring so much depth to the 2 and 3 positions. Very athletic defense and yes JR played excellent defense last year. Faried is a grinder and Hamilton is an inexperienced rookie. Without the considerable veteren contributions of Will and JR, the Nuggets take a big step backwards in terms of Wins. Count on it.

Losing Nene would be the final straw though. Of course if we only have to sign AAA and Nene, we could easily outbid Memphis for Marc Gasol. They are already in salary hell, and the owner said he won’t overpay for Marc

Thin...

It’s always interesting to get away from the season and then come back and look at the situation with a fresh perspective – while the above roster might squeak into the 7 or 8 slot if we were really lucky, there is absolutely zero depth on that squad – we’re rebuilding…

by mtnmagic22 on Sep 15, 2011 9:05 PM MDT up reply actions

The back court is solid

Baby gasol and baby make a better front court than the previous kmart/nene combo. And of course we’ve got a lot riding on the italien. What your putting in doubt is Faried and Ham (the rooks)? I think Faried is ready to go and will be the best backup pf we’ve had since Nene came off the bench. I think depth is an issue at swingman without JR or ill will. Hamilton will take time, and Forbes had his moments but is streaky. Hope that chandler/Jr can get out of china if the season starts or we can aquire another swing player.

Say there is a season, JR does sign in China and both Kenyon and Nene leave. That’s not an entirely far fetched scenario by any means. If that happens the Nuggets would not have much of a choice but to hang onto Harrington

Amnesty will be likely for teams over whatever cap they set

the Nuggets, in this scenario, are nowhere near the cap unless they set it at 30 mil (which they wont). Therefore I believe we are stuck with Big Al.

haha 16 pts 11 rbs and 7 blks?

Would that be his season statistics combined? Ok that’s a little harsh, but it’s not like those are his season averages. Every NBA player has a great game once in awhile, that’s why they’re in the NBA. I’m not in favor of dropping Birdman, but you talk about him as if he were Hakeem Olajuwon.

by NugNugz on Sep 10, 2011 7:11 AM MDT up reply actions

Maybe if he was younger and could start...

he average 6 points 5 rebounds 1.5 blocks in 16 min a game last year. So with starters minutes, at least double, that would be 12pts 10 reb, 3 blocks a game, of course no way in hell will he have 7 blocks a game.

That'd be very unfair considering everyone has bad contracts

I doubt Minny fans like the Idea of shelling out $5 million a year for Darko and they’re as low a payroll as you get.

Anyway, with our trade exception (if it still exists), we could gift wrap harrington to San Antonio, Dallas or Boston. Hell, give them one of our surplus second round picks.

by TyLawesome on Sep 9, 2011 9:32 PM MDT up reply actions

They "could" do that. But with the Nuggets so far under whatever would be a cap floor

the chances of them cutting him in any Cap Amnesty scenario are very slim. Right now the Nuggets are at $28 million if you cut Al’s Salary you would be right a $22 million. The proposed “flex cap” (last proposal) by the owners is $62 million.

That’s 40 million. The floor, at the lowest, will be 47 million. That would be another 25 million just to get up to the floor! Al Harrington is the least of the Nuggets worries. His contract, legitimately, is no longer crippling them….and with the defections to China and Nene potentially not re-signing I can’t see them cutting Al.

Minny’s current payroll btw is 20 million ABOVE the Nuggets at 48 million right now.

well, let's say

Arron costs us $6 million (guess) that brings us back up to 28million.
Then Faried and Hamilton (i’m guessing not included) will cost us about 2million total in the new CBA, so that takes us to 30.
Now we just need 17more. If we can sign Nene and one more big man (Marc Gasol or Tyson Chandler(yes, I like him), I think that would cost us 26-30 million more, putting us above the cap floor and giving us an awesome front court. Also what 1 million more for forbes? And now we don’t worry about Kmart/Jr/Chandler who are MIA. We could also try acquiring Cassppi from Cleveland for a second. They don’t want him, and it would give us more depth for only 1.5million more.

by TyLawesome on Sep 10, 2011 11:40 AM MDT up reply actions

I'd say the Nuggets payroll will still be very cheap next season

they may even be putting their eggs in the 2012 draft. so while they may sign “filler” players to field a roster if there’s a season, they may sit on money to re-sign Gallinari next year. The Nuggets trouble with signing free agents won’t go away with a new CBA. I can guarantee you the Nuggets won’t overpay Tyson Chandler. While they “may” go after Gasol…I think the Nuggets days of being any sort of free agent mover and shaker are long past (probably died with the Kmart signing)

Only the top guys are worth it. Projections and comparisons:
1. Andre Drummond, C-6-10 Amar’e stoudemire/Dwight Howard
2. James McaDoo, Pf 6-9 Tim Duncan
3. Anthony Davis Pf 6-10 Kevin Garnett
4. Harrison Barnes Sf 6-8 Kobe Bryant/Luol Deng
5. Jared Sullinger Pf 6-10 Kevin Love
6. Austin Rivers SG 6-4 Stephan curry/ OJ Mayo
7. Jeremy Lamb SG 6-5 Rip Hamilton
8. Marquis Teague Pg Steve Francis/Ty Lawson
9. Brad Beal Sg Ray Allen

Who would the go after? Also while I agree there isn’t much out there to sign, I think ty,AAA, Gallo, Nene, Gasol wouls be enough fire power to make the playoffs.

Everyone in Denver and the entire NBA knows that GK messed with JR and then trashed him in the press – a “crap” player? Who were you watching? Forbes vs JR ? huh?

Come on – that is ridiculous – Forbes played a lot of minutes and while he had a few decent games, he was pretty much non-existent. Hamilton? A rookie – I keep repeating that rookies don’t have good first years and rarely second years – if they can come out and average 10 a game and some rebounds, they are in the “rookie all-star game” – the exceptions to this are those few guys in the first 5 picks or so… reality is that the team has fallen apart with the bad timing of everything… another down period for we Nuggets fans as we wait for the next cycle of putting together a good team.

I feel exactly the same about Faried

Also, I have to say Koufos is more athletic with a better handle then Brains. Also he’s got an excellent hook shot(both hands). On the other hand, Mozgov seems a bit clumsy to me, but he’s bigger. Not just 1inch taller then Koufos but also width and overall mass. By just being in the land, he’s like a giant wall. Greece wasn’t able to drive with him there, and when they did they had to rush it, making it hard for them to finish or allowing Brains to swat it away.

Mozgov?

Give it up dude – he had 1 good game against the Lakers, was mediocre or non existant the rest of the time – I wanted to see him given more time to get experience too, but an “impact”? – more wishful thinking – we’re in huge trouble…

He barely even played

Can’t really say if he’s going to be good or not. Most people think he’s an NBA caliber starting center though.

what are the thoughts of these trades?

1. casspi&gee from the cavs for koufos? then trade # 2 lopez of the nets for nene&wc?

by ice357 on Sep 10, 2011 8:52 PM MDT reply actions

My thoughts

1. Casspi has almost no value. Cleveland would probably give those two away for a second round pick. Also, I like Koufos in our future. Athletic 7 footers are hard to find.

2. We can’t trade WC. He’s a restricted free agent. Also he’s in China. No one would trade for him if he was here. Also I’d rather have Nene then Lopez. And I think they’re gonna include Lopez in a trade for Howard. (yes, I’m guessing Howard will be traded, and to Nets not Lakers.)

by TyLawesome on Sep 10, 2011 9:37 PM MDT up reply actions

Not the ideal offseason

But I figured JR, and K-Mart were likely gone anyways. I thought Chandler would be retained, for at least one more season. It was a given they were going to lose their depth, somewhat.

I still think Nene likely signs, as most of his quotes seem to imply that is his strong preference.

It’s a weak fa class but I bet a top free agent shows interest in joining the Nuggets with all the cap they have available. Haven’t had money available since K-Mart, and at the time he was one of the top fa’s.

We got the cash fot it, and if we resign nene...

pg- ty/miller
sg- AAA/ Hamilton
Sf- Gallo/ Forbes/Harrington
pf- Nene/Faried / Harrington
C- Gasol / Mozgov/ Bird/ Koufos/ Harrington

But..

The guy has been hurt a LOT the past 2 seasons – when he’s healthy, he’s awesome, but he’s into his 30’s now and we have to expect injuries – new blood needed…

Hilarious that you have Harrington

at the 5. I remember just getting abused the few times Karl tried that. Also, we could trade Kouf if we got Gasol.

don't think they could sign both gasol and nene

Unless they are able to dump other contracts (namely Harrington). Assuming the cap is the same, Denver will have $23 million available after signing Faried and Hamilton. AAA will cost about $6 million at least, Nene at least $10.5. That only leaves $6.5 million. Course if they are allowed to buy out Al, that would allow Denver to have $13 million to go after other free agents.

Can’t see Bird being ok being the 3rd string center. And there’s little point to keep Koufos if he’s only the 4th string center.

by nugzin2040 on Sep 11, 2011 9:15 PM MDT reply actions

Jeff said that we have 28 million commited now

and the last proposal was a 62 million flex cap. so with 2million to ham/faried. That puts us at30 million. Then about 16 million more for nene/afflalo puts us at 46million. That is 16 million under the cap. That’s more than enough to sign Baby Gasol. If there is amnesty, like in the last CBA, we could ditch harrington’s useless salary or find a way to trade him away, since he useless, and maybe bird too, to clear 6-12 million more. Leaving us space for Chandler’s 2012 return. Also Miller’s 8 million dollars will expire in 2012. Allowing us to give Gallo an extension and resigning Miller for cheap since he will be 36.

by TyLawesome on Sep 11, 2011 9:34 PM MDT up reply actions

Flex Cap

I’ll admit that I don’t know too much about how a flex cap would work. I’ve heard that the latest proposal is similar to the NHL’s cap system, which teams to go $8 million over to sign their own players, at which point it’s essentially a hard cap.

But I’d expect teams would want to be under the cap if they’re in semi-rebuilding mode like Denver is. Because we don’t know how good Faried, Hamilton, and Mozgov are going to be and how much money it will cost to retain them down the line (only a few seasons away for Mozgov).

Also have to deal with extending Lawson down the line. I agree that Andre will give us some more money, but will have to pay someone to be the backup pg, so I don’t know how much savings we’ll really make.

Definitely need a backup 2/3 as well. Battier would be sweet, but he would cost.

I’d be happy with either Nene or Gasol, getting both would make Denver a lot better obviously but Andersen would have to get traded in that scenario.

J.R. is gone

What a shame. This news comes on the same day we learn the league and players are nowhere near a new labor agreement. The NBA may have lost this fan.

Hard to blame JR

No guarantee that there will be even a season (latest I’ve heard is a possible mutiny regarding the players union), so he’s just looking after himself. Obviously, if there is a season it will be harder for Denver not having JR or Chandler.

If he’s interested in coming back down the line, I’d be okay with it.

Agree...

But JR will NEVER come back after tasting the freedom of “no-George”…

by mtnmagic22 on Sep 15, 2011 8:43 PM MDT up reply actions

As in Forest Gump....

Run J.R. run! Run J.R. run! Good for J.R. – underappreciated here in Denver – go play somewhere away from George Karl. This team is blown up folks. Forbes? Give me a break – he played a few good games when J.R. was benched and then settled into reality and George was forced to play J.R. again. Chandler – gone – needed him to develop and play well – Farreid and the other rookie? – get real folks – you all act like these 2 are going to walk in and be even average NBA players their first year – it doesn’t happen. Nene – needed him and he wants out – KMart – headed out too – The Bird – good substitute, older and injury prone – Andre and Ty – they are not going to be very effective without the shooters to dish to and be a threat to open the lane for them and their one on one offense? – sorry…. AAA – still a 12 point a night guard… man – we are in for a LONG season – if there is one… I’m getting geared up to get into the college game – the one thing that KILLS me (and anyone else?) – I wanted to see how Jimmer was going to do in the NBA – what would his game have been like? But J.R. – I loved the guy’s game and hope he gets to enjoy basketball in China and comes back next year for the Bulls and jack George up good!! :)

You're too pessimistic for your own good.

If we play a season next year. It could be the year of Gallo or the year of Ty. Gallo essentially missed his entire rookie year. This year was his second, and Mike Dantoni used Gallo essentially as 3rd option behind Amare and Felton. GK will use him as option 1. Remember that game against portland where Gallo put up 30. As Gallo gets used to denver, the offense and the team, that will become a common occurrence. After Ty became a starter, he skyrocketed to 18 points, 8 assists a game, splitting time with felton. He will only go up from here. Next, why the hate for Afflalo. When I look at him, I see the clutch in his eyes. I remember the Lakers game in Denver where everyone was burned of melo talk. AAA take over and had 20 points in the first half. They interviewed phil Jackson about what adjustments he would make. His answer was short and to the point. “We’ve got to stop Afflalo.” That’s when I had a realization that Afflalo may become more than a role player. Sure enough a month later, Afflalo took over a 4th quarter game scoring 18 points and single handedly destroyed Dallas. In our new past friendly system, the team is his for the taking.

Now there is a chance, that we lose too many free agents, essentually everyone except AAA. We’ll have a long season… but at least this 2012 draft is loaded. The top 5 are said to individually have been able to be the top pick in the top 5 drafts. There’s Andre Drummon 6ft 11 center, compared to Dwight. Anthony Davis 6ft 11 pg, compared to Timmy Duncan. James McAdoo, 6ft 10, compared to KG, Harrison Barnes “most complete swing player since Kobe” Add Jared sullinger = Kevin Love, Brad Beal = Ray Allen, Jeremy Lamb= Rip Hamilton, Austin Rivers= Stephan Curry. If we suck, I’m glad it’s this year with the best class since 2003. I hope we get Drummond.

by TyLawesome on Sep 16, 2011 10:05 AM MDT up reply actions

Good points Ty...

But I guess I just can’t be putting big skills in rookies shoes and Afflalo is a good “open” shooter – can’t make his own offense – thrived off Carmelo, JR, and the shooters so he got open looks – Andre and Ty are penetrators/point guards – not Derek Rose who can create his own offense – the Nuggets lost their “one on one” guy when Melo left and now will have to play as a team – they seem to be missing some big pieces… I guess I am pessimistic :)

by mtnmagic22 on Sep 16, 2011 11:34 AM MDT reply actions

You are severely underestimating ty lawson, sir

Everyone was pessimistic after the melo trade, but then they went 18-6. If you go back and rewatch those games, It was widely Ty and Nene that lead that charge with a few big bursts from Gallo and overall strong team defense. I remember I went into the chatroom at ESPN during the Nuggets/Hornets game and said Ty would outplay CP3. Everyone thought I was nuts, but Denver won and Ty had a better stat line than Cp3. The man can beat everyone to the basket, and if you sag off him, he will make the open jumper. He’s got an excellent ft% and 3pt %. Ty often got hit going up for layups last year with no calls. Once the refs recognize him as an all star, he will get tons of free throws making him even more dangerous. He alone is worth your optimism.

by TyLawesome on Sep 17, 2011 11:44 AM MDT up reply actions

Agree 100%

Ty’s a gamer, no doubt about it. He’ll continue to get better, and he’s a team player as well.

Only thing concerns me about him is that he can be unselfish to a fault, not a terrible trait for a pg to have. But it downplays his explosiveness considerably.

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
