Another one bites the dust as Kenyon Martin goes to China!

Well, I guess there is something wrong with the Denver air, because Kenyon Martin has followed Wilson Chandler, J.R. Smith and Melvin Ely and signed the largest contract in Chinese Basketball Association history

Star-divide

Benjamin Hochman has reported this deal and the link to the story is here. It is worth knowing that the city in which K-Mart is taking his talents to is in the Guiness Book of Records and here is why, according to Wikipedia: "The largest city in western China, Ürümqi has earned a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the most remote city from any sea in the world. It is about 2,500 kilometres (1,600 mi) from the nearest coastline".

So, I think that as of right now we barely have a full lineup. The only guys under contract still in Denver are the two rookies, Big Al Hamburger (Al Harrington), Chris "Birdman" Andersen, and Andre Miller. Our only reserve is the Big Greek (Kosta Koufas).

Well, looking at the bright side we'll be in the mix for the big lottery ticket in the draft class of 2012 while developing our young core plus having loads of cap space to maybe attract somebody in the free agent class (but as it is now, everybody wants to leave town not come to town).

Write respectfully of your SB Nation community and yourself.

Expanding His Name Globally

Kenyon Martin’s agent summed up the biggest issue, in my opinion, with the NBA today with his quote, “And it also gives him an opportunity to expand his name globally”

The NBA really hasn’t been about ‘team’ since as long as I can remember, and more recently it hasn’t been about the game. It is all about the wallet value and the Q rating of an individual, positioning themselves to be an entity.

In the past 25 years, the prices of tickets in most markets have increased by 900%, yet the product the NBA has put on the floor is marginally better at best. The NBA has done a remarkable job marketing itself and its players, making perception reality, while laughing all the way to the bank at the fan’s expense.

If the Nuggets had any intention to keep Kmart then I'd partially agree

but since it was pretty clear they were parting ways anyway, I say good for Kenyon. Nice to get a good pay day this late in his career.

My comments were not about Kenyon

but about the general mindset of the league as a whole. I have no problems with Kenyon or any other player getting paid what someone is willing to pay them, nor do I have an issue with charging prices people are willing to pay in order to attempt to maximize profitability (method for determining is debatable). However there is a point of diminishing returns, and NBA may have reached it under its current model of a 30 team league that emphasizes the individual to drive its position in the sports/entertainment market.

Just my opinion……..

I wonder how regulare workers right now who've been given a choice of either Taking a pay cut or Taking an Indeterminate Unpaid Leave of Absence feel.

I mean, they can give up some of their paycheck and it’ll help their employers! Who wouldn’t do that gladly? What? Oh yeah! The owner of said company will definitely put take my money and re-invest it into the company. It’s for the good of the company! It’s not like he has a nickname for being cheap or anything.

I could go on but come on man. Let’s be realistic here. I am a Knick fan. I understand fan outrage over misspent money. I also tried to convince myself Eddy Curry would opt out of the final year of his contract because “He might! He wants playing time and he knows he’s hated in this city! Oh god please.” But you can’t really get mad at a player for signing for more than he’s worth. Get mad at your front office and owner. It’s not like a player’s allowed to renegotiate his contract to help his team’s cap situation later anyway.

Fish Fingers give me a break.

I agree with GAx. These guys aren’t accountants (millions of them), lawyers (millions of them),… these guys are freaks of nature. They are like the primo book authors who no one minds seeing get paid big bucks for their writing. – they are the best of the best on this planet earth – they are super big, super quick, super hops, super-beings who make watching them play basketball COMPLETELY different than any other basketball game you will ever watch. Why shouldn’t they be compensated. Obviously these armchair fans have no idea of the injuries and work out routines these guys go through – of the THOUSANDS of college athletes that come out every year that are SO dominating in college, how many make it in the pros? 7? 10? These guys are the most gifted athletes on the planet – why shouldn’t they be compensated? They risk injury and tear up their bodies every day. You accountants, and geologists and lawyers and blue collar guys that complain about their salaries are clueless if you think they are in the same category as “us”. The greatest musicians are compensated, the greatest authors are compensated – and so should the greatest athletes be compensated. Just a stupid lack of appreciation – what you see on TV ISN’T a bunch of “normal” 6’ guys playing pickup – the true fan is in awe of the skills and talent these guys have.

I agree – when Kenyon was out, the Nuggets D stunk. He was the stopper – whoever he was on, was pretty much shut down. And all the surgeries he had and injuries – he still sucked it up and played through it. Good for Kenyon and best of luck.

Nor did I fault him for taking a contract for 91 million dollars, I think a player should get as much money as he can. Me too – the guy brought the lunch box and did the work in the paint – and the guy could SKY!!! No one mentions his hops but man, he could get up!! And he did put the “beast” in the Nuggets defense – too bad Nene couldn’t get a little of that in his heart – looking at Nene makes all of the good points in Kenyon stand out.

Good Bye and Good Luck

Only player that signed in China that could haunt us is Chandler. Sure hope J.R., Wilson and Kenyon are ready for some culture shock.

Think Chandler was the only one that Denver was going to try and keep anyways. I have to say that IF (a big if) the season starts on time. The free agent period just got a lot more interesting for Denver.

Nene still needs to be the biggest priority. Think he could be a breakout Nugget if the team builds around him and not a half-hearted Melo..

Nene is not someone to build around

He is a perfect 3rd man on a contending team. I say this because he is too inconsistent to carry a team day in and day out. Afflalo, as good a guy as he is, also isn’t someone to build around. He is an excellent role player now, one of the best in the league, but he is no cornerstone for a franchise. During the times of the superfriend teams, in order to win a championship, because that should be the goal, you need at least one superstar surrounded by 2 or 3 very good players (read: all stars) and some other good specialists (defensive specialist, 3 point shooters, rebounders etc.). As of right now, we are a few all stars away from contending. Maybe with this proabable shortened season and with all players leaving town, it’s a good opportunity to rebuild completely, let Nene go, and try to land a potential superstar in the 2012 draft, because let’s face it, Masai is a very good G.M. and will probably not Tskitishvili us. Either way, we will certainly have a lot of new faces in town and hopefully they will be as fun to watch as were those who left.

It's very easy.

Take the card you purchased the tickets with to the stadium. They put it into a handheld reader, it scans, then prints off your tickets right there. I did it for a Nuggets game last year and it was the easiest thing I’ve done ticketwise and you shouldn’t have any issues.

So that's it then.

We’ve lost Kenyon, Chandler and JR, our defensive enforcer and our two best wings.

The Nuggets may as well be the Sacramento Kings at this point. What’s our upside, Ty Lawson and Arron Afflalo? And that’s assuming that we keep Nene, who is also a free agent.

This is really depressing.

@the word

A voice of reality! I think I rant on the Nuggets because I was so pi##ed off last year at the way George Karl handled the team – while some let JR drive you crazy, I was looking at the source of ALL upheaval. This should be a topic for discussion unto itself – I know a lot of folks disagree, but so far ONLY DENVER NUGGETS have jumped ship – now, why is that? NONE of them like GK – and I don’t blame them – to come back and play on a team run by him when they can go play ball without being under his thumb must be paradise. I think other teams players have stuck by their organizations because the LIKE their organizations. Chandler, KMart, JR (and maybe even Ty in the closet) couldn’t stand GK and he couldn’t stand them. They “didn’t respect the game” – give me a break – they just didn’t play soldiers and zombies and do whatever he said because, as we see year after year, the guy can’t coach. So ya, I"m a Nuggets fan, but GK has/had me so disgusted that I find it hard to believe that anything having to do with his input is going to succeed or be to the benefit of our players. I’ll get over it – maybe :)

And the only legit FA they were ever able to sign was Harrington... once he was overpaid

New flash… it’s not the player’s fault when a team horribly overbids for him. Try blaming the stooge writing the check for a change!!!

What free agent wants to come play for a coach who is trashed by every city and every star who ever had to deal with him – the only thing that overcomes that is $$$.

trash them all you want

some day they’re going to come collecting on some debt and we’ll all be fucked.

by NugNugz on Sep 21, 2011 8:26 PM MDT up reply actions

I'm calling BS

There’s no way they’re signing to stay the full season in China. Chandler probably arranged an “under the table” deal to get released if the NBA season starts. Then, he told the rest of the team.

by TyLawesome on Sep 21, 2011 8:31 PM MDT reply actions

is anybody else doing these non opt-out deals?

why does it seem like its just nuggets players? this is fuckin bullshit, our team is going to be so awful. this better be as good a draft as everybody says it will be.

by skithebert on Sep 21, 2011 9:15 PM MDT reply actions

Here's what I've heard

Top pick Andre Drummond 6’11 C. Scouts say he’s the best big since Dwight. He’s said to be a mix of Amar’e and Dwight in terms of how he plays
2. Anthony Davis 6ft 11 pf compared to Kevin Garnett
3. James McAdoo 6ft 10pf compared to tim duncan
4. harrison barnes “most complete swing player since Kobe”
5. jared Sullinger pf 6ft 9 Kevin Love

Also in the draft will be Austin Rivers- steph curry, Brad Beal- ray allen and many more talents. And Perry Jones who was supposed to go #1 this year before he withdrew won’t make the top 5 next year.

by TyLawesome on Sep 21, 2011 11:10 PM MDT up reply actions

do you really think that

5 once in a generation type players are going to come out of one draft? this is the same crap they say every year about every player. By the numbers, there will probably be one or two very good players, a few ok players and a bunch of crap in this draft, just like every year.

this is from the same site:

1. Kyrie Irving pg- Rajon rondo
2. Derrick Williams – Michael Beasley

“same crap about same players” No. Want me to go on from the archives

2009

1. Blake Griffin 6ft 10 pf “physical specimen. Powerful” Karl Malone. Sounds right to me

2008

1. Derrick Rose 6ft 3 pg- Dwayne Wade in the body of a pg

Next year's draft will be awesome

It will probably be considered one of the best of all time if the players will fulfill the expectations that surround them. The Nuggets desperately need a franchise player and as enjoyable as the Knuggets were, they sorely missed a franchise player. If Nene signs elsewhere (he will probably do that), then we must give major minutes to the 2 rooks, try and see what can they do on the court while not forgetting to develop the MozGod (20+ minutes per game). Masai has to do everything in it’s powers to obtain another first round pick for next year (we also have Golden State’s 2nd rounder for next year from the Melo deal) and somehow get rid of Harrington because he clearly is the odd man out (much harder to do in reality than it is writing on a blog).

NOOOOO......

I’m sure gonna miss the only person on the nuggets team that made me feel a little bit gangsta.. Good luck kenyon in china all the best. And i’m still hopeful we’ll make the playoffs next year, hopefully UJIRI some how lands us a high draft pick in a trade… hopefully..

I don't think that's legit...

But culturally, we are still “that ole cowtown” which makes it tough to draw these guys. And as always, I toss in the coach and his rep. It seems the front office redeemed themselves this year and have put a positive new light on the Nuggets from that aspect – but that 3 year GK renewal -ARGHHHH!!!!!! It STILL KILLS ME!

by mtnmagic22 on Sep 25, 2011 9:01 AM MDT up reply actions

This goes against all my "anti-military" ranting, but...

Jerry Sloan would have made me happy – because a coach can be hard nosed and still have the respect of his players… other than that, I don’t know – I was a HUGE fan of getting George when he first came here – maybe because anyone looked better than Bdzelik (sp?). But I also remember a letter to the Denver Post from a Milwaukee fan that stated how GK had destroyed their team, how he hated superstars, killed the spirit of the players, etc, etc and I thought “no way” – so it took some proving for me to go from a GK fan to a “get rid of GK” person. He did or has done, in Denver, everything he was accused of doing in Seattle and Milwaukee – I’ve told the tale of reading how Ray Allen still blows steam out his ears at the mention of Karl’s name and I know Carmelo is breathing a sigh of relief – so back to your question – I don’t know – but I do know that our personnel has been in upheaval for quite a while and GK’s attitude and coaching have long run their course in our town. We should have beat OK City, despite what some folks say – Scott Brooks schooled George and looked great – but THEN, I remember that Rick Carlisle REALLY schooled Scotty in the next round when Dallas beat them – and I thought how the disparity between coaches exists, just as in players. Jackson, Sloan – great coaches, the Brooks, D’Antoni’s (ya, ya) – good coaches, the Karls… I mean, the guy even admits he gets a jag on these younger guys and “who they are” – there is a fine balance between coaching these guys/kids and still maintaining respect and communication – GK isn’t even close – just my opinion :) Another good “Topic for Discussion” – What constitutes a good coach these days in the NBA – THAT is a complicated discussion.

by mtnmagic22 on Sep 25, 2011 6:39 PM MDT up reply actions

Interesting talk about what constitutes a good coach these days. It would be sweet to know what coaches think about players and if it has changed at all over the years. Of course, getting real talk from coaches would be impossible – to print at least. It’ll be interesting to see if Phil Jackson or somebody else comes out with a book.

Don Nelson would probably shed some good light on the subject.

by Nate Timmons on Sep 25, 2011 10:08 PM MDT up reply actions

Since Adelman is currently employed I don’t think he’d offer up much, I’m thinking Nellie because he’s sort of a rebel and he’s retired, perfect time to open the flood gates with real talk.

by NugNugz on Sep 27, 2011 7:28 AM MDT up reply actions

Hey Nate...

Why don’t you hang that out as a topic – should be REALLY interesting to hear what we stiffs think about this. You’re right though – any active coach who laid bare the quirks of their job and personnel would be in deep water….

Have the Nuggets have officially signed their draft picks yet, or do they have to wait for the CBA to be resolved first? It seems that they usally sign their draft picks right at the start of summer league, which would normally be after 7/1.

Draft picks have not been signed

One assumes this will happen as soon as the lockout is officially lifted.

Yeah

If the season starts late, I wouldn’t mind if we lost a ton of games. It will only put us in a better position for this draft, save money for a good free agency, and get our newbies some much needed playing time.

it would kill us if there's no season

and the draft order depends on an average of your last 4 years. However, I have also heard an option where the draft would be based on salary if there’s no season. That would give us the top pick

by TyLawesome on Sep 22, 2011 11:58 AM MDT up reply actions

I like me some Anthony Davis! Go check out some videos of him, kid’s a freak of nature!

by InboundingLobPass on Sep 22, 2011 1:41 PM MDT via mobile up reply actions

Davis has a good chance at #1, but so does Drummond and McAdoo

If it was me, I’d take the center, Drummond http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fx3bCS0FUEE

I wonder who Masai would take with the #1 pick? All 3 of those guys are seriously good, and no one is gonna complain to get Harrison Barnes at 4.

Some Chinese fans are planning to greet KM at Urumqi airport...

I`ve travelled there once, because of being surrounded by desert, it`s really such a dry city that I couldn`t adjust to.

BTW, former Nuggets Bateer is in that team too, if you still remember him.

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
