What will the Nuggets look like when basketball resumes?

It's never too early (or too late - in this case, freakin' lockout) to speculate about what your Denver Nuggets will look like, if there is a season this year.

Star-divide

Chris Dempsey of the Denver Post posed an interesting question in his Wednesday blog post. In reacting to the recent one year contract Wilson Chandler signed in China, Dempsey is simply wondering - how many Nuggets are left to field a roster?

Yes it's a little early/late to be thinking about this sort of thing, considering we don't know who the Nuggets will sign when the lockout ends, or what kind of contracts the players will be able to sign. Yet, Dempsey brings up an interesting point. With Chandler gone for the season,  the (likely) departure of Kenyon Martin, the J.R. Smith situation up in the air, and Nene Hilario's decision to test the free agent market, this team is very much in flux ... if not terminally uncertain at this very moment.

Let's tackle these issues one-by-one (assuming we have some sort of season):

J.R. Smith: His situation, as always, is complicated. An antagonistic, borderline dysfunctional relationship with coach George Karl contributed to a helter skelter playoffs where the best, and worst of J.R. was on display. To be quite honest, I don't think the Nuggets can afford to let him go, at this point. The Nuggets will be deficient of offensive playmakers now that Chandler wont be here. A marriage of convenience needs to be worked out between Karl and Smith. And I am strangely optimistic that it can be done.  It makes too much sense for the Nuggets and J.R. to remain together and right now the team may have no other choice.

Nene: If you pin me down, I'd say there's a 75 percent chance Nene does  remain a Nugget, maybe it's my Weekly Optimism talking, but hear me out. I just don't like the way the whole thing transpired down the stretch for Nene. His reasons for wanting to explore free agency are his own, but they seem to be weighted heavily on the "feeling wanted" side. Those things go away quickly when faced with imminent financial reasoning. In my heart of hearts I just think Nene wants to feel loved. Show him some love Nuggets fans.

Kenyon Martin: The writing is on the wall for this one I'm afraid. I suppose I was one of the few who actually like Kmart and his game. He was let down by his knees and a poor attitude for the early part of his (albeit bloated) contract and that killed him in people's eyes for the rest of his years here. Yet, during his time he instilled an attitude that, quite frankly, most Nuggets players did not possess. The times I met him in person he was quite nice and personable. For all his faults I grew to admire Kmart in a way. I'll be quite sad if he goes.

Cap Space: One thing that is not fuzzy, the Nuggets will have tons of cap space to play with once the lockout is over, regardless of the salary cap projections. Currently the Nuggets sit at somewhere in the $28 to $29 million territory (without re-signing Nene and J.R.). What will the Nuggets do with all this cap space? Will they go out and sign some free agents that were not part of the 2010-11 Nuggets? Will they sit on some of that money and wait for young players to develop? Your guess is as good as mine. My own paranoid fear is that they will hover at the cap floor (if there's a big gap between the ceiling and the floor) and take the approach of their neighbors in the Pepsi Center - the Colorado Avalanche. Let's hope I'm as wrong as wrong can be.

It seems apparent the Nuggets will re-sign Arron Afflalo. Ty Lawson is locked up for another two years on his rookie deal and has a qualifying offer for the 2013-14 season ($3.6 million). The Nuggets have Danilo Gallinari under control for another year and seem to want to put the proverbial eggs into the big Italians' basket. Timofey Mozgov and Kosta Koufos are still on the roster. Chris Andersen (wherever he is) is still around, so is Al Harrington (not saying this is positive or negative). Gary Forbes seems to be intent on improving his game during the offseason and hopefully will be back with the team as well (has a qualifying offer just under $1 million). There could be potentially some great things shaping up, but due to this infernal lockout we aren't able to see things with any certainty. And that's a very frustrating thing.

So Nuggets fans? What do you think the Nuggets biggest priorities of the offseason are? What do you think they will/ should do?

That's big time!

Jeff, I think the Nuggets are likely going to sign Shaq (coming out of retirement is easy!) and probably trade for LeBron and Leandro Barbosa. After that … it’s time to get fitted for rings! Wait … what?

I like this way of thinking...

let’s get Lebron, Dwight Howard and Dirk! We are on our way folks!

Pardon me…but I need to go back to mainlining leprechaun gold.

Sit

If there is a season (big if) then I say screw it. it’ll be a shortened season lost to the obscurity of the ages (Did you know an 8th seed has made it to the finals?). Keep the money, we’ll need it if Gallo plays well to pay him. Plus 2012 has a much deeper free agent class. It could be a lock out shortened season of suckage that leads to a top pick. At least it could be over quick. A good 2012 draft and some solid pick ups in FA along with the development in Gallo (totally in the Italian eggs basket…wait what?) and the Nuggets could be just fine in less than 2 years

we'll be fine

obviously at pg we’re set with ty/miller. We can get some veteran to be 3rd in FA
SG: AAA will resign and Gary Forbes will most likely be back. Also in TY’s latest interview(been posted before) http://www.usatoday.com/sports/basketball/nba/nuggets/story/2011-08-31/Next-up-for-Lawson-Continuing-his-pro-career-in-Lithuania/50207788/1, he hints that JR will be resigned, and of course Hamilton can play the 2.
SF: Gallo (obviously), again Forbes and Ham can backup, as well as Harington. I do have one radical suggestion. After Sacramento threw in Omri Casspi as part of the Hickson trade, Cleveland immediately put him back on the market. I believe 2 2nd round picks might be enough to get us a backup sf, one who shot over 40% from 3 as a rookie.
PF: Things get tricky here. Kmart is gone. Start Harrington(yuck). Nene? Maybe is he’s back(I think he will). Throw Faried into the fire? GK is cracking up some where. Chu chu? I’m laughing now. Something more radical…start Gallo at the 4. I actually like that one almost as much as Nene there.
C: Nene is the best option once he returns. Mozgov may eventually start. Bird will be the backup until he injures himself(90% chance). Then Koufas will be the backup center.

Assuming there is a season

As well as a similiar salary cap configuration. I’d assume we resign Affalo and Forbes takes the QO. I’d as well assume they make for a play for Nene. I think Nene either stays here or goes to NJ. Other teams have a bit less cap space. Unless he wants to go to Toronto, Minnesota, Sacremento, GS, or LA Clips. With GS, Toronto, and Minnesota not able to offer him money equivelelnt of what he would’ve been paid this year.

Lawson/Miller
Affalo/Forbes
Gallo/Hamilton
Nene/Far/Harrington
Mozgov/Anderson/Koufus

12 of 13 roster spots with no significant improvements on the market for the other positions. You can make an overpay play for Gasol but I think that still gets matched. More then likely that gets you to the cap floor lol.

If there is no season however...

You’d have

Lawson (2.5 mil)
Far (1 mil)
Hamilton (1 mil)
Harrington (6.7 Mil)
Anderson (4.5 mil)
Mozgov (2.8 Mil)

Total of 18.5 mil + 2012 draft pick

With QO for Afflalo, Gallo, Forbes, Koufus, and Chandler. I’d bet you get see 2 of those for Gallo and Affalo if they’re simply not resigned as is. Reminds me of the 02 year. I just want to see us do better then Andre Miller and Earl Boykins…What’s funny is the other contracts given that year were Corey Maggette and Gilbert Arenas…We dodged a bullet.

Ton of gaps but a ton of space. With like market price (6ish range on both) you’re just below 2 max contracts. Honestly a prohibitive cap would be huge for the Nuggets. Here’s hoping they’ve been planning what to do with this cap space since year 3 of the Kmart contract.

Not true...

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/columns/story?columnist=coon_larry&page=lockoutFAQ-110701

As structured they would expire as per 2012 off-season. With exception if the CBA is negotiated to push all contracts back a year. I would find that doubtful the owners would do so unless it’s a bargaining chip.

that's what I've read, the next cba would push it up

there’s a lot of teams that don’t want upcoming free agents already played their final games. Examples: Orlando,NJ, New Orleans,OKC, Minny, us,

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
