How to kill many birds with one stone

Unbeknown to most people,  the nuggets actually sit in a good position right now. In a league filled with roster/ financial turmoil we look quite good with a young talented team, huge amounts of cap room and no glaring holes (unless Nene actually does leave).    the only way to move now is forward..... and one move will complete everything for this team.

Star-divide

Note :until the new CBA is worked out and the nuggets can resign their players my post will be considered complete fantasy under old CBA rules where nene signs an Al Jefferson type contract (12m in 2012),  Wilson Chandler is retained for marvin Wlliams money (around 8) and AAA is retained at whatever cost.  JR and Kmart are irrelevant

Anyway straight to the trade we basically get Dwight Howard

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=3z56oyo - I used JR Smith in the trade machine for indicative reasons only,  it would be either Chandler, or Gallo but Orlando should take Wil because they have Turk there already.

This trade makes perfect sense for all teams.  Denver obviously gets D12 and still have a great team around him while getting rid of Harrington and moving Nene to PF. Detroit gets rid of Hamilton who has been nothing but a headache for them.
Orlando is an interesting one though.  Their situation is messed up,  if they can keep Dwight they cant give him very good support because their roster is in a terrible state.  In the case that they have to trade him it would be stupid to trade him without trading Arenas or else the black hole roster gets worse.

Thats where Denver comes in as a team with talented players, draft picks, cap space and appeal to howard.
Orlando must rid Arenas, get back a center (moz), draft picks (DEN 2012, NY 2014) and talent (Candler,Faried)
even after that the nuggets would end up like:

     DEN                                                 ORL

Dwight - 18 mil                          Moz - 3m
Nene - 12 mil                            Bass - 4m
Gallo - 4 mil                              Will - 7m
AAA - 6 mil                               Reddick - 7m
Ty - 2 mil                                  Nelson - 8m
----------------------                         ------------------------
Gil - 18 mil                                Rip - 12.5m
Birdman - 4 mil                          R. Anderson - 2m
J. hamilton - 1 mil                      Turk - 10m
Kouf - 2 mil                               Duhon - 3.5m
Forbes - 1 mil                            Clark/ Faried - 3m

Total = 67 mil                             Total = 61 mil

So after that we look good in terms of talent and finances, if JR and or Kmart were resigned then another 6-10 mil would be added to the total.  Orlando cuts a lot of salary and in a couple years Rip and Turk will be expiring and they will have good draft picks to build with.

You may think theres no way we ever see dwight Howard in a nuggets uniform but if he decides to leave we have a strong chance in trading for him.  Orlandos only chance would be a complete blow up and tank so they would rather cut costs than get talent and Denver gives them the best option.  As for Howard agreeing to the extension,  I'd like to see him find another team who can take on him and Gil with still having a decent team.  If he left ORL through FA he could only go to Charlotte or sacramento or something.  He would completely destroy the western conference and would pull at least 3 championships here so I would do anything to get it done.

Additional notes -

  •  Trade above must be completed before the trade deadline or the trade exception will expire.  without the TPE however the nuggets could still make a deal involving sending Nene to Orlando or another team for a lottery pick and expiring contracts and us keeping Faried.
  • Front loading Nene and Chandler/ Afflalos contract will even out the salary compensating Dwight and Gilberts increases and allow us to match Gallos
  • Arenas' contract will come off the books along with Birdmans in time for Ty Lawsons new contract

All in all I would advise Masai Uriji to put a serious thought into dwight Howard this year.  Theres no way he would want to stick around in an Orlando team going nowhere and there are little to no teams that work better than a deal with Denver.  If you can think of a team with a better offer for Howard please write in the comments section (take into account Salary situation, team talent, Dwight/Magic wants and assets)

normally i might suggest we not waste time thinking about this but...

Seeing as how there’s no NBA right now… till who knows when… I’m all for it.

I DON’T think Orlando would want to see Dwight play next to Neńe. THAT WOULD NASTY!

Detroit gives up $25 million

in total salary and takes back $27….not so sure it works out for them.

I'd love to have Howard

but realistically, he’s probably looking at how Melo got hand pick his team, and want’s to do the same. I HIGHLY doubt Denver is even an option in his mind. LA or BOS I would guess(even though I voted Magic)

by JBnuggs on Jul 8, 2011 10:21 AM MDT reply actions

Until

you hear melo like rumors that Howard wants to play in Denver, I think any Howard trade ideas are pure fantasy. There have been no indications anywhere that he intends to try to force his way to Denver.

exactly

I’m sure Howard will get what he wants, and if he wants Denver we’ll all hear about it

I think Howard is great and I love Denver

but we have a better chance of seeing Denver sign my older sister than of seeing Denver sign Howard.

Let’s get real here.

Agreed

Also, remember that David Stern is the commissioner. He’ll convince the Magic to accept a Pau Gasol-type trade that sends Howard to the Lakers. The fact that the Grizzlies might have actually won that trade when you consider that they got Marc Gasol and the cap space for Zach Randolph in return for Pau isn’t really important here.

I doubt we would take back arenas

I could see us taking in D12 using the melo exception and sending picks 1st denver 2012,2014, NY 2014, and GS 2nd rounders 2012, 2013 along with moz and maybe hamilton. It would be plenty for magic to begin rebuilding. I’m assuming arenas and Harrington will be a free agents from an upcoming amnesty clause in the new cba that both players and owners seem to want.

by TyLawesome on Jul 8, 2011 5:29 PM MDT reply actions

If his main focus was to win Denver must be an option

Him and Nene would be unstoppable. can’t double team any of them because they pass to the other for a dunk every time. Not to mention the rest of the talent outside the paint. unfortunately though he likely wont consider us after the new CBA is sorted. A lot better than staying in orlando though

He and Nene

are too ridiculously fun to watch! The quickest, strongest, most athletic 4 and 5 in the game! You know they have respect for each other purely because they fight so hard against one another. Bring it on!!!!!!!

And

you can’t use the Anthony trade exemption in a multiplayer deal. If the exemption is even available in the new CBA.

Okay so this is just a pet peeve of mine

but an exemption is an amount that can be deducted from an entities taxes. An exception however is an instance or case that does not conform to a general rule. It is a trade exception not exemption.

I'll be the lone dissent here...

But I can’t stand Dwight Howard. He’s a punk, a cry baby, a dirty player, a whiner – always tops the list of T’s during the season, tries to put on a chivalrous front – but he’s just a punk. I just don’t like his attitude and persona – Every time I see him play, I just think he’s a loser… call me crazy, but I hope he never sees a Nugget uniform…

Well, OK

but Howard is a game changer.

Dont worry, mtnmagic, we aint getting Howard anyway.

Heck, I liked Rodman...

So it isn’t that I have to have those puritanical personalities – I do acuse the Afflalo/Tebow fanatics of having to have certain personalities on the team – while I like the KMart’s, Rodman’s, and other enforcers – I just don’t like Howard – I didn’t see him play a lot this year and his stats did come up, so I will say I might be basing opinion on old performances…

by mtnmagic22 on Jul 10, 2011 9:42 AM MDT up reply actions

Guys, Howard isn't coming to Denver; the money just isn't here

And as for winning… he’d have a better chance of that on the Lakers, the Bulls, or even the Celtics (can you imagine a Rondo-Howard pair?). Also, I have a feeling that he wants to team up with another star (like Chris Paul) ala Melo-Amar’’’e or Lebron-Wade, and our non-center roster is set up eerily similar to the Magic’s 2008-2009 non-center roster with a few differences in positional talent:

6-foot fast point guard (Nelson vs. Lawson
6’10" forward who can shoot (Lewis vs. Gallinari)
SG who can defend (Pietrus/Lee vs. Afflalo)
Jack-of-all-trades forward (Turkoglu vs. Afflalo/Chandler?)
Backup guard who can shoot (Redick vs. Hamilton*)
Pretty good backup veteran PG (Alston)
Backup high-energy big man (Andersen/Faried vs. Gortat)
Benchwarming big men who kinda make an impact when they actually get to see playing time (Battie** vs. Mozgov)
Scrubs that nobody really cares about (Cook/Lue/Foyle vs. Koufos/Harrington***)

I’m supposing that we don’t resign J.R. and that we resign KMart and possibly resign Chandler
*
I feel a bit uneasy comparing Mozgov to Battie, but their per-36 minutes production lines are very similar. Battie’s averaged 10.5 pp36, 8.8 rp36, and 1.5 bp36. Mozgov’s averaged 11.2 pp36, 8.3 rp36, and 1.7 bp36. However, I did skew the stats, as Mozgov’s production-per-36-minutes and efficiency improved dramatically after getting traded to Denver, and Mozgov has only one NBA season under his belt
***I really hate Harrington’s playing style; he does what Antawn Jamison used to do, but with even worse efficiency. In my opinion, his playing style is one that can be easily replaced by somebody cheaper. That being said, Harrington is a pretty cool person; I just don’t like how he plays basketball.

Whoa, that didn't work

The line that was bolded was supposed to have one asterisk before it

The line after said line was supposed to have two asterisks before it

Also, my last line somehow got cut out: I personally hope that Dwight Howard looks past the money and the endorsements and comes to Denver, but considering who he is and considering the NBA’s strong bias towards big-market teams, it’s unlikely for Howard to play for Denver

That 2008-2009 roster made it to the finals

and Howard is way better now than he was 3 years ago. Add to the fact that we’re a younger version, therefore longer lasting version of that roster, and improving. Add nene up in the post at pf next to howard which the magic did not have, and add chandler or JR off the bench. That’s way stronger. At the end of last year, Hollinger said that we have the best supporting cast in the nba, but no star. If howard legitimately wants to win, not go to a big market, this would be his best bet. We could give orlando a massive amount of draft picks for him.

by TyLawesome on Jul 12, 2011 12:55 PM MDT up reply actions

This is my point!

I just feel like Dwight Howard doesn’t see what’s going on here.

And, the truth is, had Courtney Lee made that buzzer-beating layup and had the refs not royally screwed over the Magic over the last two games the series easily could have gone to a Game 7, and who knows what would have happened then…

Very true

Denver can provide the best supporting cast for Howard (while still maintaining trade assets to make him even happier) also we can give Orlando the best trade package in return. Its just getting Dwight to realise and agree to come here

IF anyone

Nuggets, Nets, Magic anyone

can get both Nene and Howard to play together they would be unstoppable.

No front court in the league can handle that athleticism for 48 mins.

Its like a billionaires’ version of the Boozer – Noah front court.

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
