2011 Nuggets' Free Agency: Part 1: Restricted Free Agents

Once the NBA lockout is over with, free agency will start, and the Nuggets need to figure out what to do with their seven players that will enter free agency. Currently, the Nuggets have 3 restricted free agents and 4 unrestricted free agents. For those who don't know the difference between the two types of free agency, here's a simple breakdown: Unrestricted free agents are free to contact and sign with any team that they want, and they are not required to take their previous team's offer even if it pays more. Restricted free agents, on the other hand, are required to go to their previous team if the previous team gives the player a qualifying offer and if they match, dollar-for-dollar, the offer of another team. For more information regarding restricted/unrestricted FA, check out this helpful link.

Note: I know that the new CBA may radically change free agency, but my predictions and recommendations are going to use the NBA's current FA rules, and I'm not even going to try to speculate how the new CBA will turn out.

So follow me after the jump as I discuss the situation surrounding the Nuggets' three restricted free agents: Arron Afflalo, Wilson Chandler, and Gary Forbes!

Star-divide

Arron Afflalo

Arron_afflalo_denver_nuggets_v_phoenix_suns_hxhnulvpsrol_medium

  (via www1.pictures.zimbio.com)

Basic Information: Arron Afflalo is a 25 year old shooting guard with 4 years under his belt. He's 6'5" and 215 lbs., and he has arguably been the Nuggets' best wing defender since coming over in a salary dump by the Pistons. He's coming off the fourth and final year of his rookie contract, which paid him around $1.96 million. Last season, Afflalo averaged 12.2 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 2.4 rebounds in 33.7 minutes per game while shooting a very efficient 50% FG, 42% 3ptFG, and 85% FT. Full stats here

What Afflalo is worth: Although his qualifying offer is $3 million, Afflalo is definitely worth over $7 million when you consider his production, his position as our starting SG, his offense and defense skills, and the amount of money similar shooting guards are getting paid now and have gotten paid in the past (see: Raja Bell, Wesley Matthews (except Afflalo is better than both of those players)).

What we should do: In this weak free agent class, Afflalo could very well be one of the best shooting guards available, and leaving him on the market increases the possibility that some team will strike out on, say, JR or Crawford and offer an overpaid deal to Afflalo. Thus, I say that we offer him a 4 year, $34 million contract that pays him $8 million in year one with a $250k raise every year. That is a bit of a lowball from the perspective of some people, but if Afflalo asks for more we could raise that number. Afflalo is one of our best wing players, and he also has a very nice motor and work ethic; it'd be a shame if we lose him in free agency, as the Lawson-Afflalo-Gallinari backcourt lineup showed lots of promise last season when they were healthy.

Wilson Chandler

Wilson-chandler-crazy-light_medium

  (via blog.eastbay.com)

Basic Information: Wilson Chandler is a 6'8", 225 lbs. combo forward with four years of NBA experience under his belt. He doesn't have a specialty; rather, he is a jack-of-all-trades but master-of-none in the mold of Manu Ginobili. Last season, he averaged 12.5 points, 5 rebounds, and 1.6 assists in 30.6 minutes per game for the Nuggets (his stats were higher with the Knicks, but that's because he was their starting power forward and he got more minutes there). Chandler's jumper is decent, as is his post game. He's a bit undersized for power forward, and his field goal percentage of 41.4% is a bit subpar for a forward (although injuries and inconsistent playing time may have played a role). Chandler's FT rate of 80.5% and 3ptFG% of 35% are pretty good, but his Win Shares per 48 minutes of 0.037 wasn't so great (for comparison purposes, Afflalo's WS/48 was 0.128, Gallinari's was 0.133, Lawson's was 0.153, and Nene's was 0.201).

What Chandler is worth: Chandler is probably worth around $6.5 to $7 million, although players of his type are often overpaid; even Travis Outlaw was able to command a 5 year, $7 million per year deal. The best comparison to Chanadler is Marvin Williams, who managed to get over $7 million per from Atlanta even though he wasn't worth that much. However, this year is an anomaly, and there's a chance that we could keep Chandler for a fair price.

What the Nuggets should do: Personally, I believe that a wait-and-see approach is best regarding Chandler. There's actually a decent chance that we can retain him without breaking the bank, but if a team like Minnesota randomly decides to offer him a 5 year, $40 million contract then we can refuse and let him walk; we have a bit of a jam at the 3 with Faried and Gallinari (and Hamilton), and Chandler is a guy who we could probably replace with a cheaper, lesser-known free agent without a huge drop in production.

Gary Forbes

Gary-forbes_medium

  (via www.blogcdn.com)

Basic Information: Last year was Gary Forbes' first year in the NBA. Previously, he played for several Italian teams and the NBADL's Sioux Falls Skyforce. I don't really have much to say about Forbes because he didn't see a lot of playing time, averaging 12.6 minutes, 5 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 0.8 assists per game with 45% FG shooting. Forbes is a hustler and a hard worker who can probably survive in the NBA for several more years as a Ryan Bowen-like energy player.

What Forbes is worth: I'd say that Forbes is worth around $2 million a year. Ideally, we'd be able to lock him down for a Balkman-type deal of 3 years and $5 million.

What we should do: It depends on how the rest of our roster shapes out; while Forbes isn't a bad player, it currently seems that he doesn't have a future with this team, especially when you consider that Kenneth Faried will play the role of energy player next season.

Here's Nate's post on exactly the same thing that I should have known existed. Damn it. Sorry, Nate, and thanks for the heads-up.

Also, you should check out Zachm219's FanPost regarding Free Agency and our monetary situation, as well as the intricate cap rules that will soon be demolished (but will be replaced by rules that'll be even more involuted).

OT: I had no clue that Ryan Bowen was on the University of Iowa coaching staff. Cool.

Thanks

And I was inactive on DS for several months, so I didn’t see your Exit Interviews. You value Chandler more than I do, as I believe that while he is a good player, his production is more easily replaceable than that of, say, JR or Nene. Chandler’s Win Shares per 48 minutes is surprisingly low (0.037) given both his production and his contribution to the game. I value WS/48 the most of any b-ball stat because it shows the whole picture; statistics like PER focus primarily on either offense or defense but rarely both.

If only basketball had a stat like Wins Above Replacement (WAR)… that would be amazing!

I also think that Chandler’s age (only 24) allows him for more improvement than people expect – but potential is always a funny thing.

It's often sickening how often people throw around the word "potential" regarding NBA players

I’d say that said “potential” isn’t realized at least 70-80% of the time. Also, Chandler hasn’t really improved since the 2008-09 season, and I just don’t see how he can improve more, as he isn’t particularly athletic and he’s never going to be a dead-eye jump shooter in the mold of Durant.

I picked Nene

because I think his skill set is harder to replace than AAA. I’d like to keep both of them on the team. I think giving AAA the contract you suggest is more than I hope they have to pay to sign him.

We could play big-ball with Faried-Nene-Mozgov

I’d like to see opposing teams try to score on that lineup

another "potential"

Faried and Mozgov are totally unproven players at this point – they might not even start and yet we are saying they’ll shut down other teams’ lineups??

i picked nene

but afflalo is pretty damn valuable himself.

nene is just more valuable to the Nugs because we dont have another front court player on the roster who can score in the post.

by nsink on Jul 13, 2011 5:11 PM MDT reply actions

but IMO

JR is no where close to as valuable to the Nugs as either afflalo or Nene. Afflalo plays both ways efficiently and is getting better and better, and nene is a scoring frontcourt player something we lack already (u really need 2 guys who can score on the block, that way one can always be out there during a game) let alone if we cant get him resigned.

You cannot question Afflalo's heart and dedication

JR, with all his showboating, is also a very dedicated player who Karl is/was a bit harsh on at times. Nene, on the other hand, may have been a hard worker during practice but there were times during games when he seemed a bit disconnected; he would oftentimes pass up an easy layup with 5 secs on the shotclock to a perimeter guy who would have to pull up for the 3, sometimes with a hand in his face, in order to get the shot off before the clock expires.

Shortcomings:

Afflalo: Natural physical talent

JR: Consistency

Nene: Aggressiveness

All 3 fall short in one area or another, but are mostly amazing. Hence why it boils down to Nene’s extra size for me. Just more rare.

I don't see how

Nene seems very cautious at times and tries to get everyone involved. That is his problem. JR goes for 35 points then disappears. I love JR as a player and entertainer, but if he had the same mindset as Nene, consistency, we would be clamoring to have him back.

I see this as a 1 guy question

AAA has stated Denver is the only place he wants to be. Other GMs know this and they may not even try. He’s a lock to remain. As much as I like Gary Forbes, it doesn’t really matter if he says or not. At most i see us giving him a 3 year 3 million deal in a scaled back cba. So as far as restricted free agents go, chandler is the only real question. IMO, chandler is a piece of melo to us now. We can’t allow him to walk away for nothing and I think he knows we won’t let him go. Why? he had been working out with ty prior to the lockout at our practice facility. Worst case scenario, I see a sign and trade.

by TyLawesome on Jul 14, 2011 1:01 AM MDT reply actions

As I understand it we can't sign and trade Chandler

because his incoming trade was too recent. I believe we have to sign him and keep him until Dec 15 (in a normal season…). IMO that is our only choice to get something back for him, and it gives us (and him) a chance to see how he fits. He may not fit that well, in fact, since it looks like his role would be 6th man playing some 2 and some 3. If we can sign him at a fair price it will be easy to trade him for a good return.
For my money, AAA is worth 7m a year and should be made co-captain with Ty. The Nuggs have started turning a page and they need to finish turning it and start a new chapter.

by slader on Jul 14, 2011 1:42 AM MDT up reply actions

The rule is either 3 months or December 13, whichever one comes later, but this usually only applies to free agent signings (I think)

Which team actually has a need for Chandler, though? Sacramento might have one, but Chandler wouldn’t get a whole lot of playing time there because their roster is a mess and they have too many forwards. He’d fit in pretty well in OKC, but I’m not sure that we want to trade with our division rivals.

Nets

have a major need at wing, Knicks probably wld want him back, Orl would kill for him but ahve no pieces, Cle wld definately want him, Sac potentially but they just made a big salmons commitment but they need SFs not SGs. ATL might want him, Bobcats, Det, Hou (they cld use to move a PF/C for a SF/PF depending on how much they trust budinger and twill to man the spot), LAC needs a SF bad, TOR, possibly Pho but i doubt it,

by nsink on Jul 14, 2011 9:26 AM MDT up reply actions

However, they already have a similar (albeit lesser) player to Chandler in Outlaw

I’d say that Prince or Kirilenko would fit better, and they’d certainly be cheaper than Outlaw as well.

I can see Prokhorov really targetting Nene, as Lopez has regressed significantly this past season and Hump seems to be a case of contract year phenomenon. Williams-Morrow/Brooks-Prince-Nene-Lopez/Somebody else would definitely make the playoffs.

I'm a fan of holding onto chandler

if we do eventually move him, the only logical choice is the clippers. They have minny’s unrestriced 2012 pick available, and a really bad need for a sf. Chandler could be the piece to take them to the playoffs.

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
